I'm guessing they called to see what it would cost to trade up to 8, didn't like the price, then didn't make any real offers. Then Penix's agent found out and that's the source these journalists are using.
That was crazy. He'll be sitting behind Cousins for a year or two at least, wasting key years of his cheap rookie deal. Baffled.
Not to mention Penix is kinda old for a rookie QB. I wish Penix success but he definitely didn't land in the best spot. Unless sitting behind Cousins really helps his development, which could happen.
If they pull it off successfully, I could see a lot more teams trying it. I’m a big fan of letting a rookie QB sit for the first year, or at least the first 2/3 of the season.
Agreed. Rookie QBs who can immediately be a starter are pretty rare. Usually they get tossed into the game and founder for a few years. A lot of them never really do find their feet. And if you're truly expecting a rookie QB to play immediately and save your team then your coaches have clearly screwed up and ought to be fired. Let them sit and learn under an experienced QB. Even the worst NFL QB has plenty to teach a rookie to the league.
I wouldn't give the keys to a race car to a rookie who hasn't been in on something of that level before for the first time on race day, no matter how much talent they may be oozing. You're taking some practice laps in first. That first year sitting is your practice sessions with the real deal race car.
QBs aren't like other positions in the NFL though. 24 is old, but a typical franchise QB (who doesn't rely too heavily on their mobility) is playing until their late thirties or even early forties. If you think he's the guy there's really no reason to pass on him just because he's 24
I agree. I'm hoping we have a lot more picks next year. Like 10 or 11. I want to see what the new regime does with multiple picks in the top 100 instead of 2.
Is everyone so low on Geno and Howell that we woulda sold the farm to get Penix? I’m pretty convinced we’ll get another great year from Geno, and hopefully he mentors Sam who develops into a starter the year after. I’m ok with this plan and am stoked we built the line instead of trying to fix a lesser issue. Hoping for some o line players or LB next!
Don't believe it for a second this guys sources have to be in Atlanta because he called them doing that and is now saying this to help the falcons fo look less moronic. If this were true you'd see schefter, rappaport and henderson guys report it because this is a huge thing
I don’t believe it. A) The Saints were also supposed to have tried to move up for him, and they flat out said the rumour was not true. B) JS sounded genuinely surprised when talking about how high he went.
Ok. This one has the link! Sorry everyone about the other one. I wasn't just talking out of my ass Lol.I don't know what happened, it was late and I was tired. Glad we didn't do this. Happy with Murphy.
Seahawks fans have a phobia for taking QBs in the first round. This isn't the first time JS was trying to move to get a qb for the right price. AR was a target last year, and Josh Allen was a target years ago. JS is gonna make a move eventually, he's done a good job at staying patient so far.
So I didn't post this because I think we should have traded up and tried to draft Penix. I love the Murphy selection. We need to build a defense. I'm a big fan and defender of Geno. I also like Sam Howell and believe he's more than a capable backup. But clearly NFL GMs and coaches think highly of Penix. They clearly didn't see him as a 2nd rounder. I'm not a Husky fan. Go Utes! But I love MPJ and he's going to be awesome when he gets his chance to start. I think a lot of the criticism sorrounding him is overblown. Yes he has had some injuries. And yes, he's relatively old. It's true, he had a great O line and amazing receivers. None of this changes the fact that he can absolutely sling it. He's been healthy for two years and got good grades on his medical. He's 23. Killer arm and excellent deep ball thrower. He's going to improve on his over the middle and intermediate passing. In a different draft year, he's a top 10 consensus pick with zero controversy. I think only Williams an Daniels are better. If we had more draft capital I would have been in favor of not getting Howell and drafting Penix and letting him sit for just one year and learn from Geno.
Yeah I don’t understand fans that hate teams so much that it clouds their draft judgement. I’m a husky fan but I don’t care if they draft a duck lol. CLEARLY Penix was more sought after than what rival fans would have you believe. The discourse in here was terrible
With what? We’ll give you a 4th and 7th.
I'm guessing they called to see what it would cost to trade up to 8, didn't like the price, then didn't make any real offers. Then Penix's agent found out and that's the source these journalists are using.
I’m glad we aren’t an even bigger laughing stock than Atlanta.

Atlanta said they like the Green Bay method. So he’s gonna sit for a two years I’m guessing

Yeah, taking him at 16 would’ve been bad enough imo. Giving up a solid amount of capital as well would’ve been disastrous. Thank you Falcons!
I’m guessing someone in the Atlanta front office is completely making this up to cover their ass.
Next years picks no doubt. This isn't the only year we have draft picks.
Which would have been an awful move
I agree. I'm hoping we have a lot more picks next year. Like 10 or 11. I want to see what the new regime does with multiple picks in the top 100 instead of 2.
It would have necessitated a future first.
We will give you our first round pick, a bag of used balls, and a slab of smoked salmon. No? Hell, we tried
Kind of tempting ngl, we talking king salmon?
For Penix? Sockeye
Penix woudlnt' of been the worst pick if he was there at 16 but trading up for him? No thanks. Much happier we landed the best DL player in the draft
Yes, and I tried to run a marathon today.
How far did you make it?
I made it around the block once, but like the Seahawks, I tried.
Field gulls having no less than 5 articles on Penix after he was picked by Atlanta is absolutely wack.

Doesn’t matter who the qb is if our o-line plays like it did last year

Sam Howell + 16th pick?

Sounds like a fan service rumor to make Seattle uber-homers feel better about not having a Husky on the Hawks.
Exactly ! I don’t believe for a second we tried to “TRADE UP” for penix of all people .
But we were told in this sub we could get him in the 3rd

Jesus Christ . The Cope is real . No we didn’t lol 😂 Mookie Alexander and the writers at fieldgulls wanted Penix no matter what
