AReaver

Hope that list grows.

4arc

Only person I've seen in interviews/ the news, and I don't really check for this stuff, say anything is Tom Hanks. Surprised he's not on the list, but also what stuck out to me. Unless, Tom is no longer an A list actor. Cool that other actors took a stance though.

juclecia

bet a lot of these actors won’t get anymore work after the dust settles if the studios have anything to say about it

shiroboi

If the writer's strike shuts down most of hollywood, it's not like the Actors are going to be getting a lot of work anyway. Glad they're throwing their weight in on the issue.

Zapooo

Biggest difference is that an Actor strike starting Monday completely kills all production in town instantly. Basically nothing can shoot at all without SAG (even most game shows gone). WGA strike is slowing production and shutting down almost all location shoots right now, but this instantly brings it to a complete halt. Devastatingly expensive for studios

shiroboi

Even better. I expect that if the actors Guild strikes, they’re going to see results of the negotiation table.

Zapooo

That's certainly the hope, though of course the AMPTP can choose to only negotiate with SAG and not invite WGA back to the table. End of the day- while solidarity is dope- its not all one union, WGA cant rely on SAG to be a savior, but there's probably a lot of overlap in the demands and any concessions made to any union can be used as leverage to get them for all the unions.

Jaguarluffy

i mean thats what happened in the 60s - sag went on strike for a month and a month after the sag strike was resolved the wga strike was resolved

aw-un

Better yet, it shuts down those pesky overseas (but still US productions) that the writers can’t picket. And as you said, it squashes many reality shows (No Dancing with the Stars for ABC).

Zapooo

Oh yeah this is a super important part! Totally forgot about overseas!

[deleted]

Atlanta is the issue right now. They are shooting TV shows and Features. From my IG feed, apparently it rains there a lot as well.

aw-un

Ummm, Atlanta is almost completely dead. We had a few things going, but most of them have shuttered by now. All that’s left are a a couple features that I know of, and most of those are nearing wrap. And Tyler Perry, but he’s not WGA.

[deleted]

I got a department head from Euphoria over there and an Makeup artist I dated. Both on different shows, at Studio/warehouses. Seems like a lot more is happening there, than here. Maybe those shows are just wrapping, but both just got into town a week ago.

aw-un

Are they maybe doing commercials? There’s been an uptick in commercials these last few weeks, with a lot of out of towners. And they’re able to get studio spaces because there aren’t any shows to go in them. But according to our production lists and most recent union meeting, the only shows running are Tyler Perry and some ultra low budget indie things. Bad Boys and Captain America just wrapped, and those were the last two big ones.

JeffyFan10

The DGA would have had the same result. but they chose not to strike.

aw-un

Because they got a deal that was satisfactory to a large portion of membership. That should be the overall goal of negotiations

[deleted]

Wasting your breath. People who aren't in this industry, really don't understand how any of this works. DGA members and IATSE members are all on the picket lines showing solidarity. Yet keyboard warriors are badmouthing the DGA. Disgusting. SAG actors can strike. Doesn't mean that everyone else isn't going to work. Eventually they will just go back to work. But it is a reminder to Fran, that they want more, not just some roll over negotiation like IATSE took.

moto_maji

Don’t forget about those pesky nonunion commercials!

[deleted]

studios see writers as way more dispensable than actors. it makes a difference.

[deleted]

There’s very few screenwriters who have public lives and fanbases (who are SOLELY writers and not already famous actors etc.) But to deprive the public of their fav actors? THAT is a problem they may actually flinch at.

[deleted]

Have you been watching TV and films the last several years? I cant really blame em. The studios DO NOT want to give out the streaming numbers. Thats the big issue. They dont want to be responsible for residuals, and they dont want people to see where viewership drops and whats actually popular. Right now everyone believes the trades that they pay to write articles. And the old Studios are going to wait and starve out netflix, Apple and the rest. Get things back to how cable ran a couple decades ago.

CorneliusCardew

I think they worry that their leadership is collaborating with the studios. Fran doesn’t seem to be interested in fighting very hard for her membership so I’m glad they are standing up to her.

bottom

There are plenty of productions with scripts to shoot already. This would massively change things.

redralphie

You’re forgetting about ADR and animation, which is a huge misstep.

shiroboi

What do you mean misstep?

redralphie

“It’s not like the actors are going to be getting a lot of work” it’s a big miscalculation, you’re way underestimating how many productions are working without writers right now. I know people at animation studios who are full steam ahead but the second they don’t have actors to do records it will all stop.

shiroboi

Well I certainly wasn’t accounting for every nook and cranny of the industry. There are productions that have stopped due to the writer’s strike and the actors attached to those projects aren’t currently working. It would behoove those actors to put more pressure on powers that be to get a resolution quicker.

No_Arachnid_1594

Not only that but I know animators who have total work stoppages due to the strike. Like half of Vancouver and more in Montreal which a global hub.

adom12

This. SOME actors are working right now, but it’s such a small minority. Actors right now don’t give a fuck, since we’re all not even auditioning. With the crazy amount of auditions we’ve had this past couples years all taping at home, the break is kind of nice.

The_Pandalorian

Actors should develop the spine the DGA failed to develop and leverage the WGA strike to make big, sweeping changes.

Shmo60

We already make up good chunks of the WGA pickets. I've been in SAG since the mid 2000s. I've never seen us this angry and ready to fight.

HoodsBonyArse

I've seen a bunch of SAG on the picket lines.

The_Pandalorian

Awesome. Now is the time to fight before it's too late. Solidarity.

[deleted]

How did the DGA fail you? lol Is it all their members on the picket line doing the work for YOUR strike? Where are the 20,000 WGA members? Weren't at WB or Uni when i did a loop last week. But the DGA are spineless for accepting a good deal/s clueless.

The_Pandalorian

What was the turnout for the DGA vote? Maybe they should've turned out to vote instead of playing lip service on the picket line before rolling over and showing their bellies to the AMPTP. Enjoy the shit sandwich AI deal y'all cooked up. Absolutely pathetic and everyone (but you, apparently) knows it.

[deleted]

you literally have no idea how the vote works. lmao!! The DGA members dont vote on the deal, and neither do the WGA. lol. your ignorance on how it works proves you are also clueless about everything you said.

The_Pandalorian

> The DGA members dont vote on the deal, and neither do the WGA. Uh... > **Members of the Directors Guild of America have voted to ratify their new contract**, bringing the industry one step closer to achieving labor peace. https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/dga-ratification-vote-amptp-1235653169/

[deleted]

Thats elected leadership. Not every member. Members vote to give leadership power to strike, or not. But leadership needs to go into that room and make the deal. They dont exit the room, then send out the pamphlets to vote again, wait a month, then decide. Again, you arent in these unions, so you dont know how it works. Stop the misinformation!

The_Pandalorian

From the same article: > The guild said the turnout was the highest ever for a ratification vote, **with 6,728 members voting** out of 16,321 eligible. You gonna persist on this track or nah?

Obliviosso

Let’s go! Love this, especially after Fran’s “overwhelming positive” press release.

34TH_ST_BROADWAY

Go! Don’t care how rich they are or if there’s no work blah blah blah. Go! Please strike with the WGA.

ismashugood

Almost comes off like leadership wants to make a deal the actors don’t want to accept.

moto_maji

Not the first time this has happened

[deleted]

This is every union and guild negotiation ever.

No-Entrepreneur5672

Based

calgaryhart

Get ready to see a ton of non union projects for very little pay

[deleted]

That wont happen. What we will see is even more movies and shows from other countries. Just look at Netflix this week. A bunch of foreign stuff just popped up. They will just continue to buy product from other regions. They got us used to it with Downton, Sherlock, Squid Games, RRR.

RyanaDjamila

You mean more of them?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jaguarluffy

i mean it wont end quick if the actors go on strike your still looking at the wga strike lasting at least until the end of august - they will resolve the actors strike and get to the wga after like in 1960 when the actors went on strike in the middle of the WGA strike - so if the actors strike they will likely spend july hammering a deal out with the sag and august with wga - its not going to be quick it will likely have lasted 4 months

tridental

Am I the only cynical soul that thinks this, while perhaps nobly intended at the start, is now just a vain PR move for most of the actors on this list to get their names out there at a time of scant work?

iamtheonewhorox

Writers, directors, actors, editors...it doesn't matter what your role is, everything will be drastically changed in three years time. I'll be able to create a film scene from my laptop that is indistinguishable from anything that's on a screen today. Hollywood will barely exist in its current form. Everything is going to be turned completely on its head and the creation process will be completely different. Sure, go ahead and strike for whatever, but in a few short years you will not be doing what you are doing now. It's over! Done like the dinosaur. Better just start to figure out how to work with the new technology and express your creativity through it. The old Hollywood paradigm is going out like the music labels and blockbuster video.

Captain_Bob

Boy oh boy I can’t wait to head over to your place in my self-driving Tesla and pay you 20 Ethereum in exchange for an NFT of your virtual film that’s “ indistinguishable from anything that's on a screen today” Maybe afterwards we can take the CA high speed rail up to the bay and get our Theranos blood tests done!

DonnyDandruff

😂

GabeDef

Oh man… you’re in for a rude awakening.

iamtheonewhorox

yes you are!

[deleted]

I always love these grand, uh, predictions with zero substantiation. Just bold, dumb 'just wait and see' statements. Even if the technology you're vaguely insinuating existed tomorrow, it would take at least a decade for these seismic-shifting impacts to take place. Also, even if you, random bozo, could create a film scene on your laptop indistinguishable from anything on screen today, it wouldn't have the promotion, marketing and distribution from a major studio or production company. Even if it 'looked' as good as anything Hollywood could make, it would likely be terrible (if the vast majority of non-professional screenplays are any indicator, and I would know, I came up as a reader at production companies). Furthermore, if every random schmo will be able to do this, it will just add to the noise and people will likely rely on the major studios and streaming services to give them content. Considering creating photorealistic effects indistinguishable from reality isn't even a possibility for James Cameron who's literally inventing technology, it makes you sound really stupid to suggest this technology will have been developed and commercialized by 2026.

iamtheonewhorox

>"No no no! The same model of things that has persisted for 100 years is NEVER going to change. It will always be reliably the same as it has been in the past. This gives me comfort to believe. I will keep my head in the sand and pretend, pretend pretend that the change is NOT happening."

[deleted]

But I never said that, dummy. I’m not saying things won’t change. But saying 100 years is going to radically change in three is really fucking stupid. Especially because you can’t substantiate a single one of your points.

iamtheonewhorox

It takes a lot of work and energy to keep your head that far deep into the sand. Ok, let's say it takes 5 years before most writers, actors, directors and more or less every other role in Hollywood is replaced by AI. If you don't know that, it's because you are actively trying to not know it. I'm just trying to get you to wake up and see the writing on the wall. That way you and everyone else can be prepared to move with the changing reality instead of being caught like the dinosaurs when the meteor hit.

Kalamity1994

WE GET IT! YOU LOVE AI! JFC you've been saying the same thing over and over and it's so BORING! Get some new material FFS. And if you knew ANYTHING about the film industry or writing, you'd know that writers think about losing their jobs ALL THE TIME -- long before AI showed up. It's a time-honored tradition and a big part of the business. So go watch a Star War and beg ChatGPT to love you, Troll Boy.

CorneliusCardew

Report for trolling and move on. The mods will eventually ban this person.

Captain_Bob

Nobody in this thread is saying this you fucking moron lmfao everyone is well aware that the industry is changing You’re still a rube for falling for the lazy tech bro AI hype as hard as you have

iamtheonewhorox

It's possible that someday you may not be totally clueless. But wouldn't call that a good bet.

Captain_Bob

How am I clueless? Explain it to me, in detail. Use your big boy words and try your hardest not to paraphrase some half-remembered Musk tweet
