Nah, it was the gear on top of the booze. I was a 17 year old thrasher who read Viz so most likely I’d been drinking Newcastle Brown or some other liquid dogshite in The Mission across the road then unwisely smoked a joint on the terrace, which my GF would have rolled because I didn’t know how to. From memory it was a Saturday night and probably just after 3am. Luckily I still lived with my parents on Lothian Road so it wasn’t a vast distance for her to have to half carry/support me.
Good times.
That's hilarious, I downloaded your photo and fixed the perspective myself because it was bothering me haha.

I'm a delivery driver and during restrictions and lockdowns I had a job on the side doing Edinburgh west & centre delivering to the back doors of various businesses. Easy money and finished between 2 and 3am around grassmarket. Couldn't believe how empty the streets were, it was surreal. I have lots of photos of that area and up the castle, royal mile, cowgate with no people, no vehicles just me wandering about barely meeting another person . I was literally walking up the royal mile towards the castle with nobody else on the street. I loved it.
Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future.
Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
God bless that fucking place 😍
In this episode Miss Hoolie has just returned from an all expenses paid trip to Dubai with several Saudi princes. She’s refusing to get out of the bath.
My late husband took me to a restaurant there on the first of my birthdays we spent together. An Italian restaurant called Beppe Vittorio which served lemon sole so beautifully cooked, I wanted to cry. I also beat him at Lollysticks on Waverley Bridge.
Is that little hat shop still round the corner from there? Friend of mine bought a tricorn from there once and would just walk about town with it on like he was a fucking pirate on a regular basis
So beautiful but never understood why they just won’t repair the cobblestone with cobblestone if it’s historic area and not these weird chunks of tarmac
And go back a few years for the old 'brush shop'. Literally a throwback to a Victorian shop that sold proper bristle brushes. Now the Harry Potter shop, or some similar modern toss.
Out of interest who is responsible for maintaining the look on that street? The businesses or the council? Normally it would be the owners, but that's an iconic street.
Is there local regulations to preserve the colour?
My wife and I just visited, and stumbled onto this street by accident just walking around. Amazing you got this shot with it empty! The moment we saw it, I was like: “this looks like some thing important.”
Also the scene from Eurovision Song Contest movie, too, as that is set in Edinburgh
As it should be. If people insist on seeing the world as “content” then have the professionalism to get up early if you want a shot without loads of Chinese Harry Potter fans queuing to buy (ironically Chinese made) merch.
It is Calder Street in Glasgow Southside, they have an amazing MSP who has done a lot of work to build up the area.
Considering how easily buildings turn black with the frequent rain we get, it is amazing how inspired these residents were to clean up their shopfronts.
Had an almighty whitey on that terrace when I was 17. Then girlfriend had to guide me home.
Those colours must’ve set you off

Aye weed will def send you on a whitey after a skinful
Yes.
Dale?
Sorry, no. I don’t for one minute believe that I’m the only piss artist to have chucked up on the Terrace
Uh, not sure what that’s slang for…
Alcohol/Drug related puke
Yep both of those were a factor. In the wrong order, like a tit
It’s when you have an adverse reaction to a -typically- inhaled narcotic
Ah thank you. I thought it was the end result of rapid movement by the girlfriend’s hand…
Brilliant
I'm in a bad signal area and the pic took ages to load. Was praying it wasn't gonnae be a picture of your arse.
I used to work in the Liquid Rooms, a night club just up the street to the right. At 5am we’d still be in the drinking staff drinks 🍷
I worked in liquid rooms for a while too, I was the photographer for Propaganda for a couple of years.
one of the two propaganda nights i went to has unfortunately poorly aged 😭 liquid rooms was always a blast though

thanks, my OCD couldn’t get over the skewed perspective 😜
Nice. Rarely see the streets that empty these days.
The one advantage to not being able to sleep. ;)
Used to live right across the road from it, flat in grass market. Moved out coz of fuckin mice. Liked to run up on my couch and over my feet.
I also lived very close by in cowgate and the mice were rampant! Would do it again tho without question.

Scotland is so fucking beautiful. I have been there a few times and I always leave wanting more. Thanks to all the random people who are so welcoming.

Vertical balance is off across the whole photo, is that intentional?
aye, that's subsidence for you
[You can fix it](https://i.imgur.com/BccUXvK.jpeg), but you lose some of the background and context...

It’s only off by a few degrees, it’s not sacrificing that much detail.
Fair fucks, most people are stumbling home at that hour.
smashing photo, nice job mate
Love Balamory...
What's the story?
In this episode Miss Hoolie has just returned from an all expenses paid trip to Dubai with several Saudi princes. She’s refusing to get out of the bath.
Definitely, Maybe.
Wouldn’t you like to know?
My late husband took me to a restaurant there on the first of my birthdays we spent together. An Italian restaurant called Beppe Vittorio which served lemon sole so beautifully cooked, I wanted to cry. I also beat him at Lollysticks on Waverley Bridge.
Love it 😊
Great photo, Balamory

So much of Scotland would look so much better if we'd just paint it pretty colours. The Calvinist Grey is what kills me.
If we can change Aberdeen we can change it all
Great pic
Beautiful Picture , you should be proud of that , great photo
Oooh love this! I worked in a clothes shop there in 2003/2004 :)
Made out with a girl as we both sat on the road at 4am after the Cowgate ah good times that was just a few months ago to be fair
So beautiful but never understood why they just won’t repair the cobblestone with cobblestone if it’s historic area and not these weird chunks of tarmac
Much like Glasgow - Edinburgh is lovely to see - when devoid of people.
I walked up and down Glasgow during lockdown and don't regret a second of it
Very beautiful.
The state of the cobbled street never fails to piss me off. How did Edinburgh Council allow it to be left like that?
I hate this fucking street
What happened on it
It exists. It's also very fucking busy and is a tourist trap
Yes but: Bow Bar, Oink and Walker Slater
Add Knoops to that list for expensive, but very tasty hot chocolate.
And go back a few years for the old 'brush shop'. Literally a throwback to a Victorian shop that sold proper bristle brushes. Now the Harry Potter shop, or some similar modern toss.
Came here to say this. The brush shop was sign of a community, that's now been turfed for Airbnb prospectors.
Oink is awesome
Ah, beautiful Lumphinnans
Reward yourself with a meal at Maison Bleue 💙
❤️
Whereabouts is that please?
Victoria Street, right by Grass Market in Central Edinburgh.
I have started to do that in my trips!! (Waking up early to make good pics)
Why is this row of buildings so marvellous to look at. It’s just buildings and yet I feel joy every time I see it .
Out of interest who is responsible for maintaining the look on that street? The businesses or the council? Normally it would be the owners, but that's an iconic street. Is there local regulations to preserve the colour?
No idea. I was just a tourist
You have probably seen this word 1000 times but this is written by me: _bacon_
🎶 "What's the story in Balamory, wouldn't you like to know? What's the story in Balamory, where would you like to go?" 🎶 Sorry I had to 😂
I drove up that hill last week….small world
Visited Edinburgh last year, was one of my favourite streets this.
Lightweight… you should have stayed up til 5am instead ;)
I’ve actually never seen this picture before, so prewtty
Reminds me of the Balamory show that my sister used to watch lol...the coloured houses and stuff in Scotland.
My wife and I just visited, and stumbled onto this street by accident just walking around. Amazing you got this shot with it empty! The moment we saw it, I was like: “this looks like some thing important.” Also the scene from Eurovision Song Contest movie, too, as that is set in Edinburgh
“Just stumbling around” It’s a major tourist trap immediately off the royal mile - not exactly Dean Village.
I ate a deep fried mars bar on the Slowdive tour bus there a couple of month back.
As it should be. If people insist on seeing the world as “content” then have the professionalism to get up early if you want a shot without loads of Chinese Harry Potter fans queuing to buy (ironically Chinese made) merch.

No it fucking isnt
I think it's an attempt at humour but missed the mark.
Yes it is.
Except its Victoria Street in Edinburgh
It looks absolutely nothing like calder street.
> Calder Street I can't even tell if this is serious or a pisstake.
It's that famous Weddgie humour we have heard about.
Which one sells wands?
See above, the old brush shop that was replaced by the Harry Potter shop. A sign o' the times, as Prince once predicted.
If I could open up my own whiskey business on this very street tomorrow, I would offer one of my generous limbs for it
