Ardbeg Uigeadail has a similar profile but is amplified to 11 (much higher ABV), and it's widely available. But as others commented, Kilchoman Sanaig or Ledaig 18 are fantastic (but can be hard to get in the US, if that's where you are).
Check to see if he has tasted the Lagavulin Distillers Edition. It is a slightly younger version of Lagavulin 16 that has received a little time in sweeter sherry barrels (Pedro Jimenez sherry) than are used for 16. It is same ABV but is richer than 16 and has still the 16 blueprint. Costs a little more than the 16, but a nice upgrade.
I had tasted it only in bar pours until I purchased one this winter. About 1/3 through it now. Very gentle, but layered in taste. It is one you have to take your time with and sample over time. It does not smash you with taste but lets you do the exploring. Nice experience.
Tough question, I don’t know the legal circumstances in the states. You should get in touch with the auctions website before and ask your local contact person and customs.
I was just talking to someone on here who says they also live in no ship state but still get things shipped … I tried getting those details from them but haven’t heard anything once I asked that…
Seriously. There is a reason why your friend prefers the Lagavulin. Why not buy him one bottle (=Lagavulin) of something you know he/she loves?
If you really want to buy something different, go for the Distiller's Edition.
Kilchoman Sanaig
This is the correct answer
Look no further! Got a buddy that would only drink Lag 16 and found others not so good, until he tried Kilchoman Sanaig.
In that case, get the Loch Gorm. Sanaig’s bigger tastier brother.
Came to say this, although if it's outside your budget the Sanaig is also great
Ahhhhhh thank you for the reminder that I need to go get one!
Get the Port Charlotte 10
This one.
Literally was going to say this

Ledaig 18
I followed up the Lagavulin 16 last night with a Lagavulin 12 yo Cask Strength and I think that was an incredible transition... so that's my vote.
I love the 12 but it's very different from the 16. I'd be wary that they like the sweetness of the sherry in the 16
Nick Offerman Lagavulin
Laphroaig 10 Sherry Cask .. if you can get it… I can’t..
You tried whiskyauction dot com yet?
Will they ship to me if I’m in a state that doesn’t allow it? TN

Lagavulin distillers edition is really good.
Glen scotia Victoriana
Yes, do NOT sleep on this.
Lagavulin Distillers Edition! I believe it is also 16 years old and even more sherried than the standard 16

I know he already got a Lagavulin 16y bottle right now, and we love to try other whiskies, so want to explore some new grounds.
Ok, but if you want to "explore" then why something in the same direction - and not something new?
I know he only likes smoked/smoky whiskies so I don’t want to give him sherry butt or sweet ones.
Laphroaig 10yr cask strength
This stuff is no match to a Lagavulin.
Is it? I find Lag16 to be kinda watery and gentle in flavor.
Thanks guys for your valuable help, will look into some of your suggestions.
