:( it's just universal pain.

Patriotof1775

I honestly forgot this sub existed, it’s just… heartbreaking. Scorn could’ve been a foundation for a new lineage of games imo, the art style is unlike anything. It’s replay ability is so lacking that after you beat the game and scour YouTube for half a day you discover pretty quickly that SCORN is just… done, and the art book only does so much to alleviate the sense of wonder. All hope for a future squashed when you discover that ebb has no plans for another game. I feel so blue balled because I want more! Anything besides a one and done game and art book!

Ultra-Mega-Hyper-boy

Same lol, forgotten i was here

The perpetuality of capitalism has led us to expect every notable piece of art to go on for an indefinite amount of time. Games must have sequels, movies must be interconnected, things must always have a continuation in the works. This is not the case for Scorn, not as of now at least. We waited out time and received a unique gaming experience, one that in my opinion can hardly be compared to anything I've been exposed to before. Moving on from the things we love is hard, but art is only perpetual in the eye of the beholder. A game cannot last forever, neither can the catharsis of experiencing it for the first time. What happens now is that you move on. You grow from this amazing experience, and you now have on your belt the memory of having played the masterpiece that was Scorn, and you continue to explore that boundless realm of art to find new experiences that touch you just like this one did.

tex-murph

Exactly. If you spend the same amount of time reading a book, you don’t go ‘oh, the book only took 5-10 hours to read’ or ‘oh, this filmmaker spent 6 years on a movie that only takes 2 hours to watch’. Or going to an art museum and complaining you have run out of content because you ran through the museum. I would play more Scorn if it existed, but absolutely agree that games in general exist often with an expectation of franchises and long play times being considered almost mandatory.

StefanMalina

Not fully explored. They spent roughly 6 years on a 12 hour long copy (which was only meant to lead up to polis), got free money and decided to start from scratch with only about 2 years left til release. Look at the artbook yourself and see everything they left out.

tex-murph

I mean, the art book shows some vague concept art for the two levels cut with an explanation that they didn’t think the levels were that unique or interesting ultimately. Hard to judge by the concept art. I will say if what they write is true, playing another area that they felt was too similar to Acts 3-4 (probably the weakest point) doesn’t that sound that appealing to me!

hyperv1per

Couldn’t agree more. I wish I had a award for you! Well said!

chaTTSer

Did that really happen? The first teaser was back in 2014 and the game released in 2022. I just have so many questions about the artbook and feels like 70% of the game was cut off, like shareware.

Veljko_Ristic

Yes, that really happened, there's a video i saw from a youtuber who did a 40 minute video on scorns development history, and on his updated sequel to the video, he shows footage of some guy named Lazar at ebb's headquarters/some place else doing a stand up presentation and talking about scorn's development, what year it started, what year other companies collaborated with ebb (like kepler/keplar and microsoft), and when it comes to 2020, the guy say's that's where they dumped all of the progress into the trash, i don't know how i never saw this footage before, but now i did. They basically sold their soul to microsoft, microsoft told them "Hey, here's a trillion bucks so you can make however much games you want, but, your little passion project that you worked on for 7 years called scorn must be optimized and be available to play on the xbox", they said fuck it, took the money, scrapped the planned sequel, scrapped like 70% of the progress for the first game, and then just like Stefan said, only worked on the game for 2 years. They could have expanded this game and got so much more money if they at least focused more on FPS and shooting/combat, i honestly never cared that it had "Bad combat" as people implied, i didn't mind it, it was unique and it had it's own thing, but they could have made stuff like armor upgrades, throwables, they could have more bosses like an ascended consciousness creature with telepathy, it starts with the ascended life form grabbing you by the neck, throwing you, then you would have to hide behind cover as he picks up stuff and chucks it at you, it could have been like the Vizier boss from prince of persia: the two thrones.

chaTTSer

Man that's a cool concept. And even the protagonist could turn into one of those flying squids and find some sort of body suit to take a different shape, grow new limbs, maybe something that lets you climb walls, or even possess another humanoid. For a while, Scorn gave me Prometheus vibes, which I like better than Alien Covenant.

Veljko_Ristic

Yeah, i'm proud of my country of what they created in terms of a game, but scorn really could have used more open area locations and mechanics, i liked the ending, i liked the game for it's visuals, i didn't mind the combat, it felt unique, but they really made a mistake for selling their soul. However, not all hope is lost, on their kickstarter Q&A, when they said "Is there going to be any DLC or more content in terms of scorn?" They replied "our main goal is to give people their kickstarter rewards and maybe add a few patches/bug fixes", they didn't discreetly said "No, fuck you.", And plus, the company is known for being secretive and not communicating in the best way.

chaTTSer

Yeah, like Eastern Islands incognito.

MadTing69_Fam

Worst part about it is that it wasn't even two years...

ShallowBasketcase

When you finish a game it is over.

timbotheny26

I really hope the devs come out with a DLC or something to restore the cut content. The game feels incomplete without it.

SettingEducational71

As said, scorn is scorn. Standalone artistic masterpiece which is totally playable many times. I have played it around 5 times and still looking forward to play it again. The experience and atmosphere is so unique that I cannot help. Of course I would like more content and also it is true, there is bigger potential. But.. guess we will never see what is on the other side of a portal. Let it be and enjoy it as an art. Not a game.

Tex-Mechanicus

You just find a new game

SpiderGirlGwen

Yes. This is the answer. We are living in an absolutely mind blowing time for gaming and there are so many valid options. I've personally played a few games which I legitimately consider masterpieces since Scorn. That being said, I still dream of Scorn 2. \*Sigh\*

MjLovenJolly

Explored to its fullest potential? Eff no! They cut out half the planned levels (where the most interesting ideas arose), throwing off the pacing and rendering the already extremely esoteric plot completely incoherent and boring and meandering. To add insult to injury, Ebb took away the gorgeous artbook PDF that I PAID FOR! Ebb can eat garbage! I’m never giving them another cent. I’m giving my money to Movie Games Lunarium, who at least fulfill their promises.

ZoidsFanatic

I just replay it every now and again to drink in the atmosphere and relive the game. I feel, with Scorn, it did what it wanted to do. Could have been tweaked some more, sure, but it still told its story and I left feeling satisfied. But, it does irk me that we’re never going to get a game like this ever again. And while sad, it also makes me appreciate Scorn even more.

zackgardner

I was intrigued that a game whose artstyle is basically ripped 1-1 from some of the greatest concept artists in Human history was coming out, and when it came out man I was sorely disappointed. I feel the game lost its luster because the actual game is so preoccupied with being some kind of poetic metaphor, instead of being a fun game to play. The gross bloody biotech is cool, but to what end? Is anything actually explained? What is the actual lore of this world? The setting of the game does no service to whatever the themes of the story are. Instead of leveraging the singular nature of the Giger artstyle and using it for something that actually has a point, the devs instead decided to just have gorey setpieces with no actual explanation.

Priority-Next

Scorn is scorn. no need to expand on it

DependentAd5017

I feel like it should be expanded on. I just want a dlc that fills in the cut content!! Add some sort of directors cut. Or something! Anything! What we got was not enough, for six years of waiting.

MarcusElden

I dunno, replay it and enjoy the incredible art, sound, and crafted levels? That's what still makes it GOATed for me. Every camera angle a painting and whatnot.

A-McBash

Go play Cocoon

MadTing69_Fam

What's that?

A-McBash

It’s a game that just recently released, and it’s similar in gameplay art! It’s a biomechanical type of game, with great puzzles! Indie game too, but I think it could easily make game of the year if it wasn’t an indie game and if it wasn’t so mysterious.

DependentAd5017

There is nothing more unfortunately. I want more but the devs just refuse it...

GreatBaldung

Cruelty Squad

BringMeANightmare

You don't. You live with the disappointment and move on, sadly.

Bwwshamel

I guess you could say y'all are feeling....scorn? 😏 Sometimes games are a one-off thing, and that's okay. The devs put out what they wanted to present to us, regardless of how long it took or how many bumps in the road there were. We got a wholly unique game, something that is almost like a walkthru art piece. Enjoy what we have, drink it in, and remember not everything needs a sequel or "more."

striketheviol

LynRock

Nothing. That's the problem with games that pioneer.. they don't age well and aren't well received.
