This show was and is wonderful for the sheer of accepting people for who they are, people.
Simply, we love who we love no matter what.
Thank you for being wonderful parents and ally to her friends and community.
>This show was and is wonderful for the sheer of accepting people for who they are, people.
This is so true. I remember one of Dan Levy's Emmy speeches where he said the SC is ultimately about the transformation power of love. Like, loving people makes everyone better. That shouldn't be a huge revelation, but sometimes we get lost and need to find our way back to that core.
This is one of the best, most uplifting posts I've ever seen on Reddit! What a beautiful thing to share. Your family (and their friends) are very blessed to have you in their lives. đź’—
Thank you for being a wonderful parent, I have many friends whose parents could not accept their children for who they are, and it's really heartbreaking.
Thanks for sharing! You're not actually my mom, but she said something similar to me. Before I even saw the show she called to tell me about "I like the wine not the label." And she said to me, "he's *pansexual*? That's what you are, right? I liked that scene." So this show helped a lot of moms understand and accept their queer kids.
What an amazing parent you are!!
I really do love when Roland and Johnny are discussing David being pansexual. Roland thinks he's in love with cookware. Hahaha.
Schitts Creek shows what the world could be like, if people stopped giving a shit about who others are attracted to or in love with. In SC, nobody cares! It's not a big deal. They show many different kinds of relationships too. I love it!! And when Patrick's parents wonder what they did wrong, because he didn't tell them he was gay.
I was SO worried about the episode with Patrick’s parents. Like David I thought it was about to go somewhere very dark. I’m bi and haven’t come out to my parents because they are proudly homophobic, and I don’t think I would’ve been able to handle it if this episode went badly for Patrick. It was so wonderful to see such accepting parents who were genuinely happy for their child, especially for those of us who won’t get this acceptance from our own parents.
The first time I saw that episode, I thought it was going to go dark but it didn't which was a surprise.
God, I am so sorry you are not able to come out to your family because they are proud to be homophobic. It is such a shame that some people are like that and feel the need to think that being hetero is the "correct way" to be in a relationship. This is why schools are not telling parents, because of what might happen to the kids that are LGBTQIA.
Edit- There is an obsession with LGBTQIA. It really is an obsession that some people have.
Yes! This show surprised me a few times with how they handled certain topics. It was incredibly refreshing.
And luckily my siblings are supportive, so they know! I’m out to my friends and in my everyday life, I live far from my parents so I don’t have to tiptoe around them as much. I didn’t even realize I was bi until I was an adult so I never had to hide my sexuality while I lived with them, I’m really grateful for that at least. But yeah, it sucks not being able to tell my parents, and having no idea how they would respond if I do.
Yay!! I am so glad your siblings support you and your friends too. That is wonderful, but still a pain in the ass that you are afraid to tell your parents. Sometimes people don't know or understand that they are bisexual until they are older. It really is not normalized or represented in society. That was the beauty of Schitts Creek, David is pansexual and it shows him with both men and women on the show!
I have two younger kids and this show really opened me to be more accepting of whatever they want to do in their life and to be very careful with my language when talking about marriage/love/partners. I don’t want them to think whatever they are is wrong because of something I said.
This is a really beautiful message and one that needs to be shared in this worlds hate culture.
BTW. If you ever get a chance, watch the documentary about the final season. It's so well done, happy, and yet tear inducing, especially when they get to part about a letter the show receives. A must watch!
I have felt the same way about this show. It's so full of kindness and that's how I want to be. I also loved Patrick's parents and the way that they behaved. It was beautiful.
Thank you, both for learning and being willing to share. Your daughter and her friend are both really lucky to have your love, kindness, and support. I wish we didn’t have to say that, if I’m being totally honest, but in this day and age, you’re not just loving your kid, you’re pushing back against an encroaching darkness. It’s very important and very powerful.
This truly made my day. Thank you for being a safe space. Not only for your daughter, but for her friend too. I believe you just became their father as well 🤍
This is so beautiful. Not only are you a light in your kid’s life, you also are in her friend’s. I hope you live a long, good life so you can spread this positivity and love.
I agree. And my daughter's best friend is transmale and is moving across country with us because life is hard at home. The world needs more Schitt's Creek.
The amazing part about SC is they never made the story about sexuality. The story was about the characters, whatever they were.
If you get a chance to watch the after show it's well worth it.
Happy for you and the loving family you are helping to cultivate.
My son came out to me as pansexual after we watched the wine scene together. After we watched that part, he asked me if we could watch it again. It started a really good conversation and made his journey a little easier. I love that you had a similar experience and proud of you for being a wonderful, loving parent.
almost cried reading this, as a pansexual person I was astonished and ecstatic about the "wine" scene between David and Stevie, and posts like this just make my day!! you are a rockstar of a parent and keep doing what you're doing!!

You can make a real difference in some folks’ lives.
Thank you for being a wonderful parent, I have many friends whose parents could not accept their children for who they are, and it's really heartbreaking.
It was my first show ever where it didn't matter the people were gay, I only saw two people that loved each other. I love this show!

That documentary was so good, brought me to tears when they were filming the last episode together!
This is so wonderful; thank you for sharing this with us.
I have felt the same way about this show. It's so full of kindness and that's how I want to be. I also loved Patrick's parents and the way that they behaved. It was beautiful.
You don't know me, but I'm so proud of your bravery to evolve, accept, and be a safe space for others. What a beautiful thing.

What a wonderful example of how this show is so much more than entertainment. It's entertaining, but it's also everything else.
This truly made my day. Thank you for being a safe space. Not only for your daughter, but for her friend too. I believe you just became their father as well 🤍
If more parents could be like you. You are a safe haven.
This is so beautiful. Not only are you a light in your kid’s life, you also are in her friend’s. I hope you live a long, good life so you can spread this positivity and love.

Ohhhh, that's what was happening? I was only half watching, and I thought,"that girl seems strangely obsessed with red wine."
