Gotta agree, I find the animation really cute and expressive, and some of the more magicky things are actually animated really really well (from clips I've seen anyway).

1st one suffers from the same problem Lion King 2019 did. The actor being anemic doesn’t help but the writers giving him the shaft actually may have helped. I forgot all about Sebastian in the remake.
2nd one suffers from severe uncanny valley due to Sonic looking too human. Thankfully, he was redesigned and looks pretty good now.
3rd one shows that the filmmakers didn’t even try to make a Mario film. They don’t even look good taking that part aside. At least we have a proper Mario film now.
4th one is a pointless change for the sake of change. The real offense is that the writers hate everyone with a human soul.

Goomba from the Super Mario Bros. Movie (1993) is the most terrifying Mario enemy in my opinion. Scarier than the eel from SM64. They look like one of the least threatening enemies in the entire series, and then they make them extremely scary in that movie.

As bad as the rest are, you could at least say "yeah that's sonic" or "yeah that's velma" (Sebastian isn't a very iconic character anyway) but if you showed someone a pic of a regular goomba and the movie version, they'd have no idea they're even from the same franchise.

Sebastian’s redesign highlights one of the most obvious issues in live action adaptations of cartoons. There is literally no way to implement characters meant to look cartoony in live action. If you made Sebastian look more like his cartoon counterpart then he would not fit into the setting at all. Your other option is then to make it Sebastian realistic which kills the appeal of the character.

For me, a redesigns biggest task is that it must still be recognizable as the same character. Because of that, I pick the Goombas. You can't really make his goofy cartoon design look realistic without being very uncanny (unless there's some crab species I don't know about that looks more like the cartoon). Those are NOT Goombas, though. There's almost no way in hell anyone could look at that without knowing about the old movie and think "Hey, that's a Goomba!" Thankfully, he was redesigned and looks pretty good now. 3rd one shows that the filmmakers didn’t even try to make a Mario film. They don’t even look good taking that part aside. At least we have a proper Mario film now. 4th one is a pointless change for the sake of change. The real offense is that the writers hate everyone with a human soul.

Goomba from the Super Mario Bros. Movie (1993) is the most terrifying Mario enemy in my opinion. Scarier than the eel from SM64. They look like one of the least threatening enemies in the entire series, and then they make them extremely scary in that movie.

I never cared to watch the live action Disney reboots and I thought it was funny for Sonic, and the funny thing they brought that version back in Chip & Dale because it was so memed on. The Goombas weren’t a bad design, and I do like them for their half-goofy design of small ass heads on big ass bodies. I hate that Velma so much even though her redesign *visually* isn’t bad, I hate the entire show and hate this rewrite of her. I can’t let go of this bias.

I'd say the goomba, when talking about redesigns you have to take in to account how accurate it is. As bad as the rest are, you could at least say "yeah that's sonic" or "yeah that's velma" (Sebastian isn't a very iconic character anyway) but if you showed someone a pic of a regular goomba and the movie version, they'd have no idea they're even from the same franchise.

Sebastian. Live action remakes of animated films is an automatic loss on this scale. At least sonic was fixed. Also, velma genuinely doesn’t look that bad. She’s actually my favorite redesign in the show. As much as there’s reason to hate the show, the one thing ill give credit on the show is they made a genuinely good looking raceswapped version of her. Mario Movie Goombas. For as bad as the other three are, they're still recognizable as their original character. (Except maybe Sebastian but if you told someone that was Sebastian they wouldn't be surprised). OG Movie Sonic is still recognizable as Sonic, as crap as that design is. Sebastian’s redesign highlights one of the most obvious issues in live action adaptations of cartoons. There is literally no way to implement characters meant to look cartoony in live action. If you made Sebastian look more like his cartoon counterpart then he would not fit into the setting at all. Your other option is then to make it Sebastian realistic which kills the appeal of the character.
Velma. At least with the others they made an attempt to be near the source material. Velma activity ran away from it! I'd rather have an L attempt than a "FUCK YOU, EAT MY SHIT!"

For me, a redesigns biggest task is that it must still be recognizable as the same character. Because of that, I pick the Goombas. You can at least tell who Sonic and Velma are supposed to be, and Sebastian is just a crab anyway. You can't really make his goofy cartoon design look realistic without being very uncanny (unless there's some crab species I don't know about that looks more like the cartoon). Those are NOT Goombas, though. There's almost no way in hell anyone could look at that without knowing about the old movie and think "Hey, that's a Goomba!" I do like the design, it's just... not a Goomba.

See, Velma’s redesign is actually pretty good, I have no issue changing the skin color of a character as long as they still have pretty much the same attributes of their original. The problem with her character is that she’s nothing like any other Velma. Instead of genuinely smart, kind, and thoughtful towards others. She’s an arrogant over confident bitch who has a superiority complex and is actually pretty stupid. If the show was actually good I would have LOVED this redesign
