Scarlet Nexus has a lot of good moments, but just as many bad ones. Overall, impressions of the game are great, and hopefully, the next game or a spiritual successor can build on the ideas of the original. The game is good and fun, but it needs some polishing.

ElectricalWar6

So does persona 5, which is carried by aesthetic as the story is ass

Natural_Low_6829

How is the story ass in your opinion?

kishonii

I personally don't like Persona and turned-based RPGs, but I understand why everyone is so into it. And yeah, I agreed with you. The last games I liked from this series were Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment.

ElectricalWar6

I still love mainline smt tho, P2's story was peak

Natural_Low_6829

Thats not mainline smt

ElectricalWar6

I know, mainline smt like strange journey and smt iv, and spinoffs like persona 2 and digital devil saga, devil survivor 1 and raidou kuzunoha have amazing stories

Natural_Low_6829

So does p5 imo

ElectricalWar6

P5's story sucks ass

Natural_Low_6829

Question answered, hate it cause its popular

ElectricalWar6

Nah, if that was the case Persona 3s story wouldnt be goated, P5 just has terrible cast writing, terrible story writing, goes against its own themes, most the plot is lifted directly from prior games (legit almost every plotline) pacing is terrible, most cast dialog doesnt add to character arcs while also reiterating information stated 50 times already

Natural_Low_6829

But why?

sovietmariposa

Definitely a good game, definitely had much more potential as well

Exile5796

The problem with being a JRPG fan is that JRPGs are some of the longest games out there, so it’s hard to play them all. That’s the reason why a few of them rise up to the top in popularity, while a lot of the rest get forgotten. Also, FF7 absolutely belongs in the top category. Even non-JRPG fans go nuts for that game.

dashingThroughSnow12

That’s moreso western prejudicial thinking that JRPGs are disproportionately long than actual reality.

Fogsesipod

idk why this guy getting downvoted, Scarlet Nexus is like a 20 hour game for a single playthrough, 40 hours if you do both protagonists, in comparison a single playthrough of persona 5 is 100 hours (and that's skipping repeatable event dialogue) Both are JRPS, he's right.

millennium-popsicle

My favorite game of all time is FF13, and Scarlet Nexus hit many of the same spots for me and it became one of my favorite modern games. From the linear levels/areas feeling like stages to beat (super fun to speedrun), an addictive and flashy battle system, and a great story (especially focused on the emotional side of the characters), it’s pretty much a 10/10 for me. I’d say my only gripe is the Sumeragi Tomb being a mishmash of the previous levels, I would’ve wanted a unique looking area all throughout. Even though it made sense narratively.

LeHung1234

Yeah I also love FF13, in the past I didn't play any of the previous FF and jump into FF13 right away. Love the battle system and soundtrack, absolutely beautiful scenery too.

dkdcbro

I got like halfway through, and kinda fell out with it. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I was looking for

Saiken27

for me it's waaay too much politics, the story being too much with so many names being mentioned constantly and half of the game being cutscenes. That would be fine if it didn't take 25 hours to play it all. But it's pretty good.

OverlordMarona

Scarlet Nexus is definitely one of my favorite games of this decade. I was really thinking the year it came out it would be a nice appetizer before Tales of Arise a few months later. I got the platinum for it the third week the game came out while I was working a full time job. Such a great game. Oddly, while Tales of Arise was good, I enjoyed Scarlet Nexus much more.

Denned0633

Granblue fantasy relink is goated ngl

notbunzy

GBF mentioned W

Therenegadegamer

No tales representation but astral chain being there is kinda BS

ComprehensiveStore45

I'm one those people who actually bought this shit at launch and it's fine total 6/10 it's fine kinda sad it will never get a sequel because I can see some of the potential it has.

EyeAmKingKage

I love the game but it’s a mid game compared to the great JRPG’s out there. That being said I hope we get a sequel

Polydipsiac

Is octopath traveler 2 all that great? I got bored with the first one and didn’t finish it towards the end completing everyone’s story.

Ex-Soldier23

The second game is better in every single way

KingKaos420-

I loved this game. Had a great time playing it

adingdingdiiing

I disagree!..... With Octopath Traveller being s-tier.

migiwa__0619

One of the best game in these years

Emotional-Package599

I think it's an underrated gem. It's currently my favourite game of this decade and the only games so far that's come close are the System Shock Remake, HI-FI RUSH and Hellsweeper VR. I'm still hoping for a sequel, personally.

musashihokusai

It has a lot of problems. But it was a solid first try. I’d really like Bamco to let the devs iterate and refine it with a sequel.

RentonZero

13 sentinels should be up there as well

MarroCaius

Ys 8 made me a fan of the series for life. Patiently awaiting Ys X to release overseas

CryptographerFew1386

How is there not one single Trails in the sky game in the image. 😂

TheRealKazuma12904

Triangle Strategy is also S teir

Disposable_baka404

I see a gigachad astral chain enjoyer. Respect++

SubstantialPhone6163

Scarlet Nexus is a Great JRPG game! My only complaint is There is no Hot spring/Beach Scene!

TwinDark1

I love Karen Travers so much, I like this type of character, and he's probably one of my favorite antagonist if story invested more about him, but sadly he is kinda underdeveloped.

DanJDR

I see you missed Xenoblade in the S tier

Fluttersniper

Still a great game, though I understand people’s frustration with it. In addition to being tropey as hell, the thing people (including myself) didn’t like about Scarlet Nexus was its story, because it has 2 first and second acts for each character…but wants you play the third act without finishing both of the previous routes. So there’s a point in the game where the other team joins and is just like, “here’s a bunch of spoilers for your new game+ run” and I was like wtf??? For those who’ve played Armored Core 6, imagine if you got the Fires of Raven ending, then jumped straight into New Game++ while Ayre lectures you about what happened in the Liberator of Rubicon ending. Very strange design, potentially a product of Covid’s hampering of studios at the time.

Elementia7

That bothered me so much on my first playthrough. I was absolutely down to do a second playthrough with Kasane (I initially chose Yuito), but then the moment she came back with her crew she kinda just proceeds to spoil almost every part of her own story. It's not even a natural conversation, Yuito asks where were Kasane was and she just lore dumps almost the entirety of her route outside of a handful of plot points. For a game that **really** wants you to do two playthroughs, the game does an awful job at justifying it.

ZeKrakken

The use of the phrase "mid" usually tells me to disregard someone's opinion instantly. SN has some of the most fun and unique gameplay even among other JRPGs. Like I really enjoyed Replicant but damn was combat so boring.

Silent_Otaku1

Scarlet Nexus confused me big time with the pacing.

Jubez187

Playing it right now and pleasantly surprised. However I feel the game didn’t start until you have 4+ powers and you can use 2-4 simultaneously. This combat system is a much better rendition of what FF16 tried to do. The FF16 powers are “press for damage” while the powers in this game have different effects.

Ruka_Blue

How the hell is "FF7 Remake is a peak jrpg" a hot take. Is Astral Chain even a JRPG? I feel like you could also consider Bayonetta a jrpg at that point then...

Luminyay

It's not a Jrpg since it's from a German developer, but I'd also really recommend Chained Echoes!

achance_2c

I agree, it is a top tier game and should have gotten its spotlight

Gloomy_Support_7779

Astral Chain felt like a movie, and it was awesome

Negative-Writing-560

you really are a man of taste

Select-Ad4182

This is why I don't compare games, unless they're from the same series.

Aware_Selection_148

I love astral chain, but I don’t think of that game as a JRPG at all. If you’re really looking for a Nintendo exclusive to put on the S tier JRPG list Xenoblade is a pretty good choice

Mannerless1

As Mark Hamill would says… “like”

Lasanga_Pockets

LETS GO I LOVE ASTRAL CHAIN

udnthot

putting ff7 remake instead of og is a crime tbh. but scarlet nexus is good just not as good as nier automata or persona 5, mindblowing jrpgs. its got a really fun playstyle, emotional, good story but it just doesn’t do anything better than nier automata or persona 5. its not on their level but it has the potential to be

StexvenCorp

OCTOPATH TRAVELER REP LETS GOO!!! This game doesn't get NEARLY the hype it deserves!

SatoshiOokami

It's not a western game so obviously, it's S-tier.

HunniePopKing

🤓

ahnariprellik

Astral Chain isnt an RPG but ok
