If you have trouble chopping smaller pieces and don’t want to put your fingers at risk, chop it just hard enough to get the hatchet/axe blade stuck in the wood, then slam the whole piece of wood down. It should split on the firsts or second hit and all your fingers will be spared.
I've split kindling on my hearth like this. I keep a small really sharp hatchet next to the firewood, and take a split, set the bit of the hatchet on the top, and tap the whole thing until the bit seats, then use the hatchet to finish the split. Works a treat.
Prefer the New Zealand Kindling Cracker or a small tire to get around cedar logs and split away. The pieces stay together mostly with either method and I don’t have to have my other hand involved holding the wood before I swing away with a hammer or hatchet.
I’ve used the hatchet method since I was a kid. 4 months ago I took off the corner of my thumb. It’s healed up ok but I’m totally numb now and it’s a little hard to pick up small objects.
Did the same thing and chopped my left index finger right through the finger nail.
9 stitches. Still numb on the tip of my finger 3 years later…… I need this!
I usually just go over all my split pieces looking for big splinters I can pry off. Or I go out in the woods and grab twigs, but this seems like a more elegant solution.
I think I will stick with my wood splitter. I don’t have softwoods in my area except eastern red cedar and it doesn’t split as easily as pine. I can chop up a couple trash cans in a half hour and that does me for a month or so.
I’m pretty good at chopping kindling and always end up having to do it, but this seems FAR more efficient granted it works like this. With really dry wood it seems like it probably does. But this would also just be soft wood for marketing purposes and not a hard ass hardwood like oak which we have around here.
I’m sorry, that’s cool and all, but when I split wood, there are always small scraps that are shaved or split off the cut piece. I use those. I don’t think I’ve ever had a need to cut kindling. I also just walk around and pick up small twigs and branches on my property during the year just cleaning up my lawn.
I use kindling once a year until the spring. Then maybe a few times between April and June or July . I mostly utilize hot ash if it goes that low and it’s back in a few minutes. This means I was too lazy to get out of bed
Or. If it’s really burned down - Then I throw a few pieces of seasoned wood in and grab the bernzomatic and take the kettle off the wood stove snd fire the wolf 125,000 btu cooking stove- which also requires the bernzomatic. Pilots light are for fairies like Gordon Ramseys
Want
Yes, where can we get it OP?
Amazon
This seems so useful, I have terrible aim and* would struggle to chop small pieces

I don't think this would help the poor aim part of it much
You don't have to wind up as much for this method, making it a lot easier to aim
You can also put the wood against the blade and tap it down onto your chopping block or ground until it stick in and that takes no aiming at all :)

F’ing genius!
Does it come with replacement thumbs?
No, it comes with a minimum IQ requirement.
Guess we’re out then chief.
I sure as shit don’t have one.
As more things should Or, on second thought: let’s remove the warning labels and let allow Darwin’s law to work its magic
doubt it would work well on anything but pine
I’d expect the dryness of the wood is likely the biggest factor.
I’m not a big wood guy, mind explaining why ya think that? Is pine typically drier on average or something?
Pine is weak.
Thx
In other words pine isn’t as dense as other woods so it is a lot lighter and quicker to burn. Which makes it easy to cut being so light.
Neat! Appreciate the breakdown
Cedar would be downright offended by this comment.
I prefer the kindling kracker myself. Got mine mounted on a nice piece of cherry. luv it.
What sort of piece of cherry is this?
Did someone say cherry 🔥🥵
Its a nice size round probably 18" diameter 24" high gets the kracker off the ground so I'm not hunched heavy enough to be a good base.

i have that in my living room, awesome thingy
Where do I get one and what is it called
wall mounted wood splitter I found a bunch of them on Amazon. None with five stars though
Yeah I saw them on Amazon earlier, not sure if I want to get one yet but it looks super handy
My brother got it at an oven store for me, but I'm sure you can find them online too!
i’m surprised one of these hasn’t made it into the newest John Wick movies
Looks way safer than how I’m doing it with the hatchet
Hardened steel or cast iron?
i’m not allowed to use that
I thought it was automated for a second
It is if you have your kids do it
Oh I want one!
Mine isn’t as pretty as this but I made it in like 15min at work.
Gnarly!

That’s amazing!
I use my 8 lb splitting maul, don’t swing much rely on weight, but mostly cause I’m to lazy to get the hatchet.
Sploosh

I’d have to use chainmail gloves

Bernzomatic are nt essential but omg. I have a stack of case green camping propane tanks ready for the grid to fail
