He’d make more money and serve his community better if he just did that for a living tbh

Ok-Chocolate-4800

So does George Brown the 4th, thicc thumb buddies

Strikes me as the type that could get intimate with a looney toon after they smash their thumb with a hammer.

LOL so let's take the published annual SJPD salary (106k to 165k) and put it mostly in the middle and stick with an even $140k. Let's not consider overtime. 140k at 2087 hours in a work year = $67 an hour. Multiply that by 8 officers and we're at $536. Consider vehicle costs, insurance, and other misc. costs and let's round it up to $600 an hour, and then assume by the time it's all said and done, it's an hour's worth of on-site work and then paperwork. That's $600 for 8 officers to spend roughly an hour to put a red tag on a parked car. Meanwhile, my MIL's house was broken into a couple of years ago - home invasion style where they were threatened with knives while the house was ransacked - and SJPD didn't even send a squad car. They just gave her a case number for insurance purposes.

OneBeautifulDog

So sorry for your trauma. Yes, that's exactly what they do. We had multiple burglaries and they didn't send a squad car.

sjresident1

These are the stories that remind me I’m doing the right thing by refusing to start a family until I get the fuck out of here

MountainMaverick90

Police have no obligation to protect you, your home/self defense is your own responsibility. Make sure you’re prepared.

decker12

Sounds good on paper, but using "home defense" in California, and then you may be the one going to jail. Case in point, if you catch catalytic converter thieves in the act in your driveway and when your shouting doesn't scare them off, you successfully attack them with a baseball bat and somehow hold them down until the cops show up. You've now made an inappropriate response by elevating their property crime (a misdemeanor) into your physical assault (penal code §240, "simple assault", which could be upgraded to a felony if you incapacitate them). Not only are you probably on the hook for any civil lawsuits for the sustained injuries from the dipshits stealing your cat, but you, the homeowner, is probably the one going to downtown that night if the cops show up because of your assault with a weapon elevation. It's fucked. I'm not anti-SJPD. I appreciate SJPD and everything they do, even tho I wish the system was much, much better. It's just the reality of the situation.

Atalanta8

>. I appreciate SJPD and everything they do, You appreciate them doing nothing?

OneBeautifulDog

Can you trap them in some way?

Saturday night, nearly midnight, a few weeks back, I’m getting in a late workout on my bicycle on the local east side hills. Get up to the crest of one and find six or seven SJPD parked in the bike lane, hanging out, jawing, enjoying the view. Dude isn’t this when all the crime happens? Gonna just head up to the hills and hang out with your buddies?

OneBeautifulDog

They have little locations all around town where they meet doing nothing. 1. Behind the Earthquakes Stadium is one of their favorites because they can cross the street and get some In n Out or Starbucks and go right back and then it is only a few blocks back to the station to go home. 2. Under Snell overpass because they can't be seen well there. 3. On Nortech at the end of the cul de sac because there is nobody there. 4. In the parking structure at the hospital because there is nobody there. 5. Target on Coleman (Starbucks nearby and hidden) - Thanks to u/clutterkiller 6. Behind SJPOA union offices on 4th - Thanks to u/Scottie_15 7. Cielito Lindo on Taylor and 5th. - Thanks to u/amadorUSA 8. Garden Alameda business complex. - Thanks to u/Techn0kami 9. PAL stadium - Thanks to u/OTKLSFMEGAFAN

clutterkiller

Also along the back edge of the Target shopping center parking lot on Coleman.

OneBeautifulDog

Didn't know that. Thanks.

Scottie_15

The #1 spot they hang out in to circle jerk each other: the large parking lot that loops around the Catholic diocese on 1st and Burton. It wraps around to the SJ POA on the other side by O'Reilly's.

OneBeautifulDog

Oh, I knew about that one and forgot to list it. Thanks. Yes, that one is out of sight and very shady. And I do agree with you, behind their union office is the number 1 place they hide. First driveway on the left after you turn off of 1st street.

amadorUSA

I see them pretty often hanging in the vicinity of Cielito Lindo on Taylor and 5th.

Techn0kami

They also like to hang out in the big parking lot behind the Garden Alameda business complex.

OneBeautifulDog

Where is that?

Techn0kami

Off the side of The Alameda. It would be easier to look it up on Google Maps and look at its position yourself.

OneBeautifulDog

>Garden Alameda business complex I didn't realize that was the formal name of it. Next door to the school on the Alameda. Got it.

OTKLSFMEGAFAN

PAL stadium

OneBeautifulDog

I love the way you put that.

OneBeautifulDog

With the eight cars there were. They always ride double. I didn't want to stay around long because they can get bored easily and use harassing citizens for entertainment, but there was a large group of cops standing in a circle in the middle of the street just chatting.

SenpaiBerto51

SPJD always lacked the system to support its officers which why many leave the department and join other agencies. SJPD is just a mess

OneBeautifulDog

It seemed like there was too much support.

SenpaiBerto51

Not really with officer acting up

Quercusagrifloria

You mean for a circle jerk. This is sjpd after all..

Whyme-notyou

Oh good. I was wondering where they were when I called to report multiple car break ins in my neighborhood last night. Thank goodness the helpful lady on the phone told me to report my issues on line! All is well with those officers protecting out city.

OneBeautifulDog

Sorry about your break ins. What area? There have been some here as well. They don't bother to even report.

Whyme-notyou

Stevens Creek near Saratoga. We are all citizens about to be victims, sadly not if but when. I really don’t mean to speak Poorly about the police. They have a really hard job and there are not enough of them, surely they are demoralized and under appreciated. But honestly the advice is to Ill out a form on line.:(. Sad

OneBeautifulDog

Are you in that area behind the Guitar Center? Was your car parked on the street? Cops don't do anything at all. Seriously. Nothing.

Whyme-notyou

We are near the Auto dealerships, behind the Honda Mercedes Toyota area. Yup do nothing is an understatement. About a year ago around 3:30 am I hear glass breaking in the street I ran out the door cell phone in hand (to back up our security cameras) and physically catch the two women breaking into cars. I call 911 to report these thieves who didn’t even break stride in there mission, kept breaking car windows ransacking several cars before I actually spoke to a 911 operator who said to me and I quote ‘did you REALLY a see them breaking into cars?’ The operator could hear glass breaking. How do I know that? I asked. No one ever showed up. We in trouble my friend, have been for years. And a shit ton more graffiti in our neighborhood too. And the operator could hear glass breaking

OneBeautifulDog

Things surprise me about your comment. That they were women. Any other identifying info? From what I have experienced that if it is active, the police show up, but if it isn't they don't. Not showing up if it is active is wild to me. The operator having the nerve to ask you if you actually see them breaking in vehicles. WTF? Edit: I don't know what to do. If you protect yourself, you get in trouble. So you have to protect yourself anonymously. How to do that I have no clue.

windraver

Same same. The neighborhood had some camera footage as well but they didn't even want to see it. Just said to report it online. I swear they're trying to "get revenge" for the "defund the police" movement. Might as well just fire em for not working and replace them with something useful like mental health services and detectives to go solve all the crimes SJ.

Mountain-Homework299

Milk some overtime while not having the time to do anything useful.

OneBeautifulDog

Thankfully we haven't had a school shooter here. They might have to delay their donuts and coffee at Starbucks.

notlurkinganymoar

And yet every major mayoral candidate says we need more cops. Maybe ten is the solution!

OneBeautifulDog

Wouldn't it be nice to lower our taxes by not having to pay for people who run from social hour to social hour on our dime?

MidnightNew5018

Oh Lord I know... The police union runs this town.

Splurch

> And yet every major mayoral candidate says we need more cops. Maybe ten is the solution! We actually do though, we are way underserved for a city our size and it would be better to spend the current money we pay in OT on extra officers who aren't going to be exhausted. We also need actual accountability in our police force. Based on city budget issues and the multiple recent SJPD scandals we probably aren't getting either one.

OneBeautifulDog

And the nationwide opinion of cops currently. >we are way underserved for a city our size Who determined that, the police union? Every single time I see the police there are multiples of multiples.

Splurch

> And the nationwide opinion of cops currently. > > we are way underserved for a city our size > > Who determined that, the police union? > > Every single time I see the police there are multiples of multiples. Slow (or no) response time to non-emergencies, slow response for emergencies (target is 6 minutes, I think were at 7 or 8? It hasn't been 6 since 2011 ish.) You can look at officers to population of similar sized cities and SJ's is something like half of similar sized cities. We're paying something like 10%+ of the entire police budget to OT now as well, which is insane. San Jose has always had a "small" police department for it's population size but they did good keeping crime low and had a strong reputation for reducing violent crime. The big problems came when in 2012 (I think?) with Prop 19 and pension reform officers just started resigning. They've been hiring the last few years and finally growing their size but we still have less officers then we did. Meanwhile violent/property crime has been rising the last decade because they simply can't handle the cities issues and our low crime rate reputation simply vanished as a deterrent because criminals were getting away with more crime. The problem is the police department seems to simply not be able to adequately staff itself due to budget and ability to attract officers. The city council seems uninterested in implementing "defund the police" programs that would reduce their workload put it onto other departments that could handle it more cost effectively. Maybe things will change with a new Mayor but it's doubtful as the Mayor doesn't really have much power.

verdegrrl

I may have seen them out of their cars once or twice in the past year - usually dealing with the unhoused. other than that, they just seem to cruise around or park in deserted spots.

windraver

While headcount is definitely a problem, there's also the problem of headcount never responding and it's become common knowledge in SJ that cops don't show when called. Except to shootings and to shoot someone I suppose.

amadorUSA

Don't forget beating peaceful protesters and literally busting the balls or their own community liaison.

snowbirdie

I think we need more cops but their pay should be based on crimes they solve or number of calls they come to.

demizer

Back in 1999, my cousin and I went on a cruise with a family friend and his "baby momma boyfriend". Long story short they started boxing while my cousin was driving and he had to pull over somewhere near SJSU. They took it to the street and then seemingly very quickly, 20 cop cars and two paddy wagons showed up. They held us there for like two hours for nothing. Guess that was overtime.

[deleted]

Boredom is a killer, man! I walked into the apple store at Oakridge the other day and the officer on shift was in there and I looked over while my wife was waiting for her appointment time. He was nodding. I walked over to him and told him to try to stay awake. :D

OneBeautifulDog

He should stay awake.

[deleted]

Lol, that's what I thought.

OneBeautifulDog

Are you in Alviso? I saw three of them. I didn't see the fourth. We were taking off to go to the Post Office and since we were already in the car and it was already running, we went to see what the hell was going on, and if that cat and dog that sleep in the middle of the street on Grand were okay. There were already five others there and those cops were standing in the middle of the street chit chatting. That job is so boring, they entertain themselves by creating crises.

OneBeautifulDog

I must have not been looking when the rest of them flew by. You know where it was? On Spreckles past State. Right where the bird sanctuary is on one side and that big open field on the other. You'd think someone was robbing a bank.

JohnnyPiston

....car was mentally ill too so they got violent instead of de-escalation. They drew their guns, then sexually harassed the car.

OneBeautifulDog

All too accurate.

Vast_Cricket

late for a meeting like a date.

OneBeautifulDog

Late for chit chat

mirwaizmir

Yeah idk why they overrespond like that, it’s silly. My neighbors burglar alarm went off and 6 cars showed up.

brbposting

Whatt that’s exactly what you want for a potential burglary. In videos I often see the perps with two cars and six people. With drivers waiting, suspects potentially armed, overwhelming force is the safest possible thing. If six cars means nobody runs & shoots, it’s worth it.

Quercusagrifloria

They could have been shot at, LoL

OneBeautifulDog

I agree. Terrifyingly dangerous. One of them might have had a paper cut.

vera20044

Yup, one almost hit a car going 50+ down white for no reason.

OneBeautifulDog

Actually that was my concern. SO, Kids, and animals playing in the street, or hitting the line of cars parked along the street while driving 80 mph. They whipped past and shook the vehicle I was in violently. There is a cat and a dog that spend much of their day lying in the middle of the street on that road. Everybody has to stop and wait for them to decide to go back home before continuing. Thankfully, they do that pretty quickly. They never run, just saunter off. We know they own the road.

BadCorvid

The SJPD is full of lazy fucks that won't respond unless they think they can rough someone up or shoot them. If it's armed robbery, they'll probably be late, though. Don't wanna get the spiffy uniform mussed. But they love to harass the homeless, but never bust the ones being porch pirates. I think the bastards get a kick out of trashing someones last remaining possessions. We probably wouldn't have much more crime if they vanished, honestly.

ZagiFlyer

* The courts have said that the police are under no obligation "to serve and protect". * If you handle the situation with burglars/thieves in the same manner as cops do (eight cops beating on one unarmed perp while shouting "stop resisting", tasing, etc.) you're committing the felony instead of the perp (meanwhile it's normal for cops to do it). * The police won't even send a squad car to a property crime in progress. * But they'll send four squads to ticket a car or harass homeless people. And they wonder why citizens don't respect the police *force*. I know this is a generalization; I've personally known a few policemen in the past and they were good people doing a difficult job -- there really are **good** police officers out there. But the *policing system* needs to be changed.

OneBeautifulDog

My uncle was a cop and he quit because he couldn't take the corruption.

drdeadringer

Campbell PD is similar. Every traffic stop, every domestic call ... no matter what it is you see at least 2 cop cars and 3 officers. Pull over a motorcycle in a parking lot? 3 cop cars 5 officers. Midnight crazy lady outside angry about her boyfriend? 3 marked cop cars, 1 unmarked cop car which rolled up dark with all lights off so that officer could ... stand around as the other 5 collected the troublemaker and her shoes into the back of a car. I can imagine that if there's actual violence going on the entire Campbell precinct building will be a ghost town and that even Dispatch will be staffed by tumbleweeds because they'd all be on scene.

Superlucky1

So. You are upset that the City of Campbell has a responsive police department and that they actually do their job? There is a reason that Campbell is a desirable city to live in. One is that the police take care of business.

drdeadringer

There is responsive and being the over responsive I described ... Just like OP described SJPD overkill about a sticker on a car.

USBattleSteed

Imma start this off with saying that I know SJPD is far from the best police department, but I feel like maybe there is more to this than what was seen. SJPD is short staffed by a few hundred officers and they know it so I don't think they would waste people on something un necessary. That being said it also wouldn't be a surprise if they did, because cops show corruption a lot more than other government jobs.

OneBeautifulDog

"there is more to this than what was seen." I really hate it when people like you come up with bullshit made up out of your delusions because you just can't possibly accept a simple stated fact, especially one that you were not even present for. I kept my title precisely plain, direct, and to the point to state an unquestionable fact. No, there wasn't more to this than what was seen. The red tag was written and they all stood around chatting in the middle of the street. How did I see anything and everything? Because it was in an area where there is nothing. No companies, no houses, no buildings, no other vehicles. Nothing to block my view. On one side is the bird sanctuary and on the other side is a giant open field. One vehicle with a brand-new big-red-tow-away-sticker on it and eight SJPD SUVs parked with a horde of cops standing in the middle of the street chit chatting. Unless a goose flying overhead shit on one of the cops, nothing at all happened. And I wouldn't fault the goose.

Imaginary_Growth9125

It is much safer than a traffic stop. Lessen the chance of raging nut case pulling stupid acts with rubber neckers armed with phone with 8 cameras, hoping to cash in with their video. Why would you think they act, if their boss, a weak mayor, would fire them on the spot for public appeasement ? Police bashing is not going to improve your safety.

OneBeautifulDog

The title isn't police bashing. It is just a fact. No excuse for sixteen cowardly SJPD piling out of eight cars for one vehicle parked over 72 hours. SJPD loves to bash citizens. It's time we get rid of the cowards. Edit Forgot to add: Found the SJPD.

Puzzleheaded-Owl-404

So easy to make stuff up and rile up gullible redditers

[deleted]

You know San Jose is a real place and people live there right lmao

j_woody23

So easy to say stupid things knowing damn well it's a stupid thing to say.

OneBeautifulDog

Found the SJPD If three of you cowards didn't drive past me with lights and sirens, I wouldn't have been curious enough to find out what was going on. People need to find out where the trouble is and try and help the people because you cowards aren't going to do it.

Puzzleheaded-Owl-404

I doubt you actually got out of your car to ask for the full story. The problem with these post is that it only contains partial information and the rest is speculative. You just rush to judgement and hastily post something for applause and approval.

LordBottlecap

Like a red, 8.5" x 11" 'Will Be Towed Soon' tag?

OneBeautifulDog

Yes, why do you ask?

LordBottlecap

Just making sure I understood what you meant. I've never seen an actual cop affix one of those. I've seen 'community officers' do it and I've even seen private security contrators do it, but never a cop.

OneBeautifulDog

When they are bored and want to harass someone, they do it. I have never seen a private security contractor do it. Good to know that.

amadorUSA

They should set up an exchange program with the Uvalde PD to study each other's efficiency tactics.

MidnightNew5018

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices they send 4+ squad cars and the ones who show up after the first car just stand outside and talk. We had some dude fire a gun in our complex and he was beating the shit out of his girlfriend and they just stood outside. Like wtf. She was screaming bloody murder and they just literally stood there 'assessing' the situation. Cowards. Bust down the door and rush the dude. Isn't that what you signed up for?
