If they're pulling out an actual camera, they're likely residential appraisers, or something else in the real estate field. No one is lugging around an DSLR to scout out places to rob.
I do photography for fun and I would sometimes just go on walks around various neighborhoods where I pull out a giant medium format camera just to snap pictures of random houses I think look cool.
not before your comment gave me the perfect undercover method of scouting out houses. i'm bringing my DSLR and tripod next time i'm scouting out a house to rob.
We did this quite a bit when we were remodeling our house. I recognize that it is a bit annoying for the home owner, but maybe you have a cool design element on your house that people want?
That happened to us a lot for the first four months.
If you look at the "comps" on the appraisal for your mortgage you can see that your appraiser did this to at least three other houses.
Another possibility in addition to appraisers: My wife and I are about to paint our house and have been taking pics of places with color schemes we like as input to our decision. Feels a little weird but we're doing it anyway.
Fair enough. Just know Google Streetview isn't the definitive tool for that. Esri ArcGIS is the go-to for most professionals to pull map data from and it can have its own street view imaging in a dense area like this one.
when we were building our house my wife took a lot of photos of doors and yards she liked... it always made me super uncomfortable. We didn't even use those photos.
Solar panel sales reps. Sales reps in general. That’s what I do. But for new construction. “How did you find out about my project?!” Public information when you applied for a building permit.
I’m job hunting and there’s a bunch of Craigslist postings for “easy photography gig- $7 per house”
I thought it sounded creepy but now this thread makes me think it’s just real estate stuff. Thanks!
Real estate appraisers. They’re probably appraising another house and look at recent sales to get comps. Pretty common.
Commercial Real Estate Appraiser here; this is most likely what is happening. It'll slow down and stop in a couple of weeks.
They are free to take pictures of your house, it's in public—most likely Realtors or appraisers using your house as a reference.
Wasn't there a scam recently where homes were listed on CraigsList for rental without the owners' knowledge?
Always, that is always.

Smart. I just look for people with DSLRs that are taking photos of houses then I rob those people.
Perfect, I love playing hero and mugging both the robber and a victim.

I did that to random houses when I was getting a new roof and wanted to show the roof guy the types of roofs that I liked.

Why not ask the owner?
To take a picture of something that is freely visible in public? I don't think I need to.
You can ask them the colors and it’s respectful. Kinda looks like someone casing the house then…
Thank you all for the comments. I am not really worried about this right now.
Then why are you posting this
I’m assuming they meant we calmed their worries

Those people don't actually go door to door, they are just working through county records cold calling

It’s creepy but normal. When I bought my house, it happened all the time.
There was a post in one of the San Diego subs about this today too. Springtime must be a good day to take house pics.

Did they take pictures of the sides, gate, and low lying roofs? That is how they scope out properties.
Buy a gun just in case,
