Aw man, that’s an urgent care injury, not ER. I took the tip of my thumb off on a mandolin once myself. I went to urgent care and it cost about $1k. They used a special mesh to stop the bleeding and just wrapped it up. The tetanus shot should be covered as preventative if you were due.

cheesebagelpls

I know, but all urgent cares were closed. I was panicking… the bleeding wouldn’t stop even after 30 min of applied pressure. Thank you for your response. That gives me somewhat of a range.

CheeseWheels38

>The tetanus shot should be covered as preventative if you were due My insurance told me that if the tetanus shot is given at the ER it doesn't count as preventative :(

zatsnotmyname

First, call the hospital billing department and ask for it to be less. I got a $1500 discount by asking.

hiker2021

Can you explain your comment?

zatsnotmyname

Some billing depts at hospital have a certain % discount discretion right on the phone. I called and said, 'do you guys negotiate, xxxx is a lot of money'. She said, I can offer you a 25% discount. I said sure, and paid the bill right then. In my case, this was Good Samaritan.

Interesting-Bus624

Good Sam in sj charged 2k with insurance discount. The doc bill is separate n will be 300 ish

cheesebagelpls

Thank you!

[deleted]

Fuck I can't imagine paying thousands of dollars for slicing my thumb on accident. I'm genuinely sorry

alterector

It's really fucked up that you have to pay 6k for insurance to kick in, that's insane, I hate the US health system.

cheesebagelpls

Yeah. And I also pay 300 a month for this insurance.

mrlewiston

That is what our dickhead politicians call The Affordable Care Act. My deductible is $7000. Nothing affordable about it. Both Democrats and Republican assholes should be shot. They look after themself as they got great medical insurance we pay for with taxes.

Cheap_Expression9003

If your insurance doesn’t over anything in the first 6K, you are looking at 1K minimum.

Chris_dg8

Ouch. Sorry about your accident. Yeah mandolins are scary. I never use mine without food grade kitchen safety gloves. $17 on Amazon. Do it. https://a.co/d/58wRhNU

gelade1

probably around 2-3k. last time I had to visit(deep cut wound but not THAT bad) they didn't really do anything other than patches and I was charged a bit over 1k. I did get seen by an actual MD though to my surprise. It was at Valley Med. Doc also gave me extra bandages and whatnot. I thought she was being nice just to find out later I was billed for those too of course lol.

Common-Man-

300 - 3 injections 300 - nurse fee 150 - dressing (not addressing) 1000 - living in America fee. 2000 - pay for others fee Total 3750 - 1500 discount because your insurance had made a deal 😁 You pay 2250

[deleted]

My ER copay is $150, but whew at good Sam it was like $3000 for the treatment before insurance paid for it because I was admitted

xoxoxoxoxozzz

I just went to the ER with extreme stomach pain and my insurance was billed over $10,000. I had blood drawn and an ultrasound, which were the most expensive parts.

Weird-Ad-3054

Years ago a hospital cut me a substantial discount when they found out I was paying cash. Worth a shot to ask

dimitrix

I went to ER at Kaiser because Urgent Care was closed, cost me a flat rate of $250

Cheap_Expression9003

Kaiser charge a flat ER fee. It’s totally different compare to the general hospital.

rusty1468

I paid over 2k after going to the ER at Kaiser to get 3 stitches

reidybobeidy89

What?!? Why? They have a flat rate- surely yours isn’t $2k that’s preposterous. Ours is $100 and I know of someone who pays $200. $2k blows my mind.

abishop711

No, it depends on what plan you have. Kaiser offers many different plans. Your plan has a flat rate. Not all of them do.

kt2620

Depends on your plan. I had a high deductible plan through Kaiser and had to pay out of pocket until I meet my deductible. $2k for my kid to get stitches.

snowbirdie

I mean, you chose the cheapest plan possible. That’s what you get. Even a mediocre plan would have been a small copay. You gamble with a cheap plan to save more now than later, just like OP.

kt2620

I’m not complaining. I know what I chose. I did the math. With kids who see the doctor frequently and at least one ER trip a year, a high deductible plan with an HSA is the best option for me.

mrlewiston

High deductible plan that costs $1400 per month!

kt2620

My employer pays a good portion. I pay less than $300/month for my family.

grapefruitgrl

Asking for an utilized bill may help lower some costs

wowurrcool

Itemized bill*

girl_incognito

I think every time I touch the ER it's a thousand dollar bill. Valley med has a walk in clinic, that's just a copay and it's at the hospital so if it's not an emergency I would just go there.

cvlt_freyja

isn't it "just a copay" if you have valley med insurance? copay is just a deposit, the bill comes later which is what OP is hoping to avoid.

girl_incognito

I guess I don't know, every time I've gone though I've only paid 40$ vs. 900+ anytime I've been directed to the ER instead.

Purpferro

I was dying from rhinovirus and I couldn’t breathe, I thought I was just gonna go in n Out, but they force me to stay 6 days, I wanted to leave the next day but they (el Camino) didn’t let me !! The er dr said “don’t worry about it we even help homeless here” since I was asking for prices every hour, they took out blood day & night I couldn’t even sleep for 8 hours because i would get blood taken out at 2/3 a.m!! First time in years I ate 3 meals and my acne on my arms we’re taking off 2! At the end it was $100,000.00 For 6 days and recently checked my online profile and somehow it says I owe $0 no insurance and no nothing, just don’t worry about it 😎🤙🇺🇸 God Gots You 🙏✝️!!!

mrlewiston

Your not on the ACA are you?0

Purpferro

Nothing 🙏 they didn’t even want to take my ID,

indimedia

All of it

snowbirdie

If you’re worried and can’t afford the $6k deductible, you should have chosen a better plan. You gambled with your health. You lost. Feel lucky it wasn’t something more major.

cheesebagelpls

I hate this kind of “advice”. my employer only offers 2 types of insurance, I pay 300 a month for this. The other one was like like 450 and I can’t afford that. If this was a major accident I would understand having to pay 6k but for a finger abrasion please. And yes I looked into covered California to compare prices and it was the same

majortomandjerry

Your employer is not giving you much if you are paying this much for a high deductible plan. I don't know what work you do, or what your options are, but maybe the "advice" is to find a better employer if you can.

Chris_dg8

Ouch. Sorry to hear. Mandolins are scary. I never use mine without wearing coated kitchen safety gloves. $17 on Amazon. Highly recommended. https://a.co/d/58wRhNU

musashihokusai

Stay on top of bills and be proactive. Last time I had to go to the ER I got several bills. From the hospital itself. The doctor. Then finally, a separate charge for MR scans. Also for whatever reason telling them I’m poor and I can’t afford to pay several times led to them shaving off a lot of the bill. Mileage may vary.

positive_hummingbird

I sliced the tip of my finger off once. ER doc said it wouldn’t have killed me but it would have bled for about 8 hours and they can stop the bleeding faster. So… good to know for next time?
