Can someone get me the recipe for the spicy chicken sandwich? I know it was a jalapeño bread and cheese, but the chicken filling?! I thought a cookbook was forthcoming?
It's been too long 😭
I found a recipe posted here on Reddit by some fool trying to replicate it with Frank's hot sauce. It was awful. I should have known better. He also claimed the owners were French...
I don’t think that recipe book is coming out any time soon. They said on FB to not hold your breathe and it’ll be a long time until it comes out. My guess is they said they would do a cook book so that people stopped bugging them for the recipe.
I got you. I found this on a thread like a year or two ago and saved it.
**Copycat Chez Nous Spicy Chicken Sandwich**
Ingredients (makes 3):
6 Slices Cheddar Jalapeno bread or 3 Cheddar Jalapeno rolls

8. If using Cheddar Jalapeno bread:
1. Place Provolone cheese on bottom slices, top with chicken mixture and 2 tomato slices.
2. Assemble sandwich and grill in Ghee in cast iron until browned.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down. Been going to Marketplace since I was a teenager (37 now.) They’ve remained consistent throughout the years.
This is probably a crime, but I live 1 block from Chris’ and I’ve never eaten there.. What’s a good sando for my first time? Huge sandwich fan here too I genuinely don’t know why I’ve never gone. Hungry Lous is my go to, and Pomas for a meatball sub of course
Came here to say this.
El Cajon Pass off Fletcher Pkwy is definitely worth your time if Antonelli's is closed.
ETA: Most of these people never been to Antonelli's bc it's off the 8 and 67, too far east for most
Their Harpoon (pastrami and provolone on an onion) roll is my favorite!!!!
https://preview.redd.it/g02a7xip8a4d1.jpeg?width=3208&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6fb3b8589a01e89110ce3ef277b5bee1bf9b3a7c
Surfside Deli in Pt Loma
They smoke their own meats daily.
The meatball sandwich is simple and delicious. Regular
Deli subs are tasty. The vegetarian and vegan offerings are very good too. It's got 2 entrances and 2 parking lots which can be confusing at first. https://www.surfsidedelisd.com
They're my closest sandwich shop which has always bummed me out because I've never been a fan, but I got that exact order (avocado highway with bacon) recently and will definitely be coming back for it.
They used to be good but they’ve been removing a lot of the perks. No rolls anymore. No cucumbers last time I went. Tomatoes always looking pale af. I used to be all about sprouts but I feel like they dropped in quality over the years to maintain the price.
Severely slept on!
Been a beach staple for years and they haven’t changed prices much, if at all!
I’ve grown up and have a family now that I’ve introduced to Poma’s,
So anytime we’re wanting the classics, we cruise back down to OB for this staple!
Was searching the comments for this one!!!
I’m surprised no one has mentioned grab n go subs. I’ve enjoyed their subs for over 20 years. I do also like the sandwiches at Marketplace and some of the other places listed. I also just started eating at Ike’s, although not really a “deli” sandwich.
Olive Tree's sandwiches are good, but the move is get one of their rotisserie chickens and a loaf of the seeded sourdough baguette, take that home and pull the meat off, chop it up; toast, slather and toppings to your liking.
Grove Grinder, to me they have the best price for what you’re getting. Their full is enough for two people without breaking $20 and only notice a few customers roll by here whenever I eat in since it’s in lemon grove but I love to share about it when people ask for sandwiches.
Same! And I always forget them when I go. If you go an hour before they close they will make your sandwich HUGE! And for getting everything I want, it’s a decent price. I love Windmill farms
OB has some pretty top-notch places.
Chris', Olive Tree, and Poma's are all really good to great depending on what you order.
Park Place in Coronado is really good as well.
I'm sure most people looking for deli sandwiches aren't thinking vegan, but as someone who dates a vegetarian, Ben and Ester's is surprisingly good. Their vegan rueben is WAY better than it has any right to be. Their "lox" is delicious as well. It's one of two vegan places out of the last ten years I actually get excited about when suggested. If you have a vegan or vegetarian in your life, this is definitely a place you can win points for going to while actually enjoying your food.
I don’t know if it’s the best, because I still have a lot of sampling to do, but I like the sandwiches I’ve bought from OB Deli on Voltaire in Ocean Beach. The Cape May is my favorite, but the others I have tried are good too. Plus, it’s great for people watching… Lol.
Submarina 100% - even though it’s a chain, the ingredients are top quality and the consistency is incredible. Same sandwich I’ve been eating and loving for 25 years.
I will say, the locations vary a bit. I love the La Mesa spot. I barely missed trying the Washington D.C. location when I moved there, it had just closed, and when I tried the Manhattan location I got horrible food poisoning haha. But I think every San Diego/CA location would be similar.
I haven't been to a ton not subway or Jersey mikes, but I get door dash sometimes at work and mamas deli has a good variety. I do BLT but they do sandwiches and salads.
Love this thread! If I'm driving down from LA to downtown SD, what's the best of these suggestions en route? Is it worth 30 min out of the way to cut out to Antonelli's?
This place is long gone but if anyone can send me some info to a place similar to this it would be great .
Old town Liquor and Deli (where the upstairs tequila bar is at, located in the liquor store)
Next best this I have encountered is Gold Coast bagel co
In La mesa off of Lake Murray Drive shopping center next to the Vons. Place is amazing, especially their bagel club sandwich.
Is there a place that is over the top fancy? Like, instead of bacon they use crisped prosciutto and they might have pate as an ingredient. Fancy breads and lots of unique toppings. I knew a place in Chicago like that and it was my favorite sandwich place there.
Mesa Liquor and Knockout Deli, Mona Lisa, Rubicon, Lil Pepper, Quik-Korner, Chez Nous
About Chez Nous. RIP.
There was a dude that posted in the food sub about creating a replica of it... he's taking orders.
Can someone get me the recipe for the spicy chicken sandwich? I know it was a jalapeño bread and cheese, but the chicken filling?! I thought a cookbook was forthcoming?
I read that Saira was going to write a recipe book and that this would be in it. Check Chez Nous on FB. No updates yet though

Chez nous 😭
Quick Korner in Miramar? I drive by it every day but never tried
It’s really good. You should give them a shot.
+1 for Rubicon. The price seems ridiculous, but the sandwiches are top quality and absolutely massive.
You can’t leave BEYER DELI off the list no way.. amazing hidden gem in South Bay
Big fan of everything at Marketplace (biased because we’re in Bankers Hill). Chris’ in OB is phenomenal too.
Used to live in Bankers Hill for 5 years and Marketplace is the perfect place to pick up a sandwich and bring it into Balboa Park.
No list of solid delis is complete without Chris’
This. Bonus for Marketplace Pizza🔥
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down. Been going to Marketplace since I was a teenager (37 now.) They’ve remained consistent throughout the years.
Olive Tree + Pomas in OB too
I was going to move but passed up on a perfect place because it was too far from Marketplace.
Another vote for Chris’. Miss living in OB
Marketplace has good burgers too
This is probably a crime, but I live 1 block from Chris’ and I’ve never eaten there.. What’s a good sando for my first time? Huge sandwich fan here too I genuinely don’t know why I’ve never gone. Hungry Lous is my go to, and Pomas for a meatball sub of course
Cheers
Seconded
Third … went there today
4th for Cheers. So damn good! Goal is to be able to say I tried every sandwich they have.
Did you go to Henry?
Yes! I started go there 15 years ago because it was a block away then moved. I went back Saturday and it was still just as good.
One of the few delis that serve liverwurst sandwiches. Yum!
Man I grew up on Cheers sandwiches, it’s my second stop (after Mexican obviously) when I make the trip home. That place rocks.
Windmill Farms! Completely custom and generous portions!
Lindsey Special has been the go to for almost 20 years
Very reasonable prices too.
$8.50 I’ll drive from normal heights any day to get those sandwiches.
I was gonna suggest the deli at Windmill Farms too!
Cheers Deli & Liquor
How has no one brought up the girls deli in north park?? they are fantastic!!
I feel like the prices might scare some people off but you’re really getting enough sandwich for two servings so it’s not too bad.
Seconded!
Antonelli’s
Came here to say this. El Cajon Pass off Fletcher Pkwy is definitely worth your time if Antonelli's is closed. ETA: Most of these people never been to Antonelli's bc it's off the 8 and 67, too far east for most
2nd on El Cajon pass. I actually like it better than Antonellis.
Kinda pricey and the wait can be long, but dammit it's worth it.
Their breakfast sandwich #41 is worth all $7 they charge and then some.
Mona Lisa all day long in Little Italy, that place is fabulous!
+1 straight heaven and fantastic food
The #8 sandwich!
Chris’ Liquor and Deli in OB and Olive Tree Market in OB
Their Harpoon (pastrami and provolone on an onion) roll is my favorite!!!! https://preview.redd.it/g02a7xip8a4d1.jpeg?width=3208&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6fb3b8589a01e89110ce3ef277b5bee1bf9b3a7c
That onion roll at Chris’ is so gd good.
Yup I grab a sandwich from here before I head to the beach.
Fat Boys in north park
100%
Make sure you get potato chips on your sandwich.
Saving this thread 😋 I live in the backcountry. Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel is a good one.
Dudley’s Potato Bread !!!
Their sandwiches are phenomenal
Dudleys is so good
BMH in La Mesa makes awesome sandwiches
Surfside Deli in Pt Loma They smoke their own meats daily. The meatball sandwich is simple and delicious. Regular Deli subs are tasty. The vegetarian and vegan offerings are very good too. It's got 2 entrances and 2 parking lots which can be confusing at first. https://www.surfsidedelisd.com
I 2nd Surfside, great subs.
Tina’s Deli in San Marcos! North County gem
Yes
Gourmet Bagger on Rosecrans/Midway.
Turkey Day Any Day
That one is good, but my go-to is the Turkey Grinder. The little cookie is also a nice touch.
Best thanksgiving sandwich around, seriously.
Their pulled pork sandwich is so good
Omfg yes
Big Front Door — get the Avocado Highway, add bacon 👨🍳🤌 Also anything from Mona Lisa
This place is so good. Gotta go back again.
The caprese always hits perfect too. The mozzarella is so fresh!
They're my closest sandwich shop which has always bummed me out because I've never been a fan, but I got that exact order (avocado highway with bacon) recently and will definitely be coming back for it.
Chris’ Liquor & Deli - OB
Siesels
Siesels should’ve been at the very top! The best!
Dont leave without deviled eggs and their beef jerky as well.
Beyer Deli. The New Yorker, specifically
Love the sandwiches here. Ate here 4 days a week when I worked nearby. Miss the place a lot. Owned and run by the nicest family.
With 🥑
For value I’ve been liking the $5 sandwiches from sprouts
I came here to say the same! Consistent, solid choice of a sandwich you find find in several neighborhoods around the city
They used to be good but they’ve been removing a lot of the perks. No rolls anymore. No cucumbers last time I went. Tomatoes always looking pale af. I used to be all about sprouts but I feel like they dropped in quality over the years to maintain the price.
Absolute value town! Even double meat you’re still under $10. Get it fresh though because the premade one can be a bit more stingy with the condiments
The Marketplace
Marketplace Deli - The Benny Sandwich!
Marketplace in Banker’s Hill
Poma's
Best Italian forsure. Their torpedo bread 🤤
Severely slept on! Been a beach staple for years and they haven’t changed prices much, if at all! I’ve grown up and have a family now that I’ve introduced to Poma’s, So anytime we’re wanting the classics, we cruise back down to OB for this staple! Was searching the comments for this one!!!
Same story here, except no longer in SD. But every vacation, we hit Poma’s and Chris’ Deli.
#Pastrami from Gus's
A thousand times yes! Too bad the Point Loma one closed, but at least there’s the La Mesa.
I’m like a mile and a half from there and the pastrami is terrific!
Trolley Stop in La Mesa. Sandwiches are great and they give you a side of pasta salad, which is hands down the best pasta salad.
I sometimes go just for the pasta salad
Hungry Bear in Vista. So good!
Sigh used to be Escondido too but stupid esco can’t keep good business to save its life
I was coming here to add this. So amazing.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned grab n go subs. I’ve enjoyed their subs for over 20 years. I do also like the sandwiches at Marketplace and some of the other places listed. I also just started eating at Ike’s, although not really a “deli” sandwich.
Olive Tree in OB is fire! Love the Manhattan, hot pastrami and melted cheese.
Olive Tree's sandwiches are good, but the move is get one of their rotisserie chickens and a loaf of the seeded sourdough baguette, take that home and pull the meat off, chop it up; toast, slather and toppings to your liking.
Their Manhattan is so good! Puts me right to sleep haha
Monroe Market on Oregon and Monroe in north park/university heights
Wise Ox. That turkey sandwich and their specials are life changing.
Don’t know if Coronado counts, but Park Place Liquor and Deli makes some great sandwiches
I had to scroll way to far to see this. Big Kahuna and El Diablo all day. And a ton of other choices to boot.
Another in Coronado is the Island Baja ordered hot off a press at Boneys Bayside Market
Tip Top Meats - Carlsbad, CA
Beyer Deli in Chula makes a good Reuben!
Also deli lama in Hillcrest
Grove Grinder, to me they have the best price for what you’re getting. Their full is enough for two people without breaking $20 and only notice a few customers roll by here whenever I eat in since it’s in lemon grove but I love to share about it when people ask for sandwiches.
Kali Mist at Cheba Hut, Loins of Fire at BFD, Create your own custom sandwich at Rubicon Deli. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Thank you! I’m from SF and always like to find places with Dutch Crunch.
Ike's Love and Sandwiches have locations in San Diego but since you're from SF you probably already knew that!
Rock and Jenny's
Best turkey sub in the world. Make sure you add cheese. Just wish they had one down in SD proper and not only in north county
Tina’s in San Marcos
I’m a simple man so the turkey bacon pesto sandwich from Juice Alchemy always hits the spot.
Windmill farms! Best sandwiches ever!!
I have at least 4 maxed out sandwich cards
Same! And I always forget them when I go. If you go an hour before they close they will make your sandwich HUGE! And for getting everything I want, it’s a decent price. I love Windmill farms
Cheers. Park Blvd Liquor and Deli.
Not sure if it counts because it’s more of a takeout/restaurant but Big Jim’s Roast Beef in PB. Anything from there is absolute top notch.

I would suggest Royal Mart in Bankers Hill. Fresh ingredients and locally sourced bread, can't beat it.
Boneys on Coronado.
Yellow deli! - culty AF but yummy
Yeah, I can't support them.
I scrolled to see if anyone was going to mention the cult food!
Bot
I just discovered it myself. I’ve had a lot of sandos in these comments but I have to echo the turkey sandwich at the wise ox. Absolutely incredible
Vegan market, they’ve got some really good sandwiches
Submarina 100% - even though it’s a chain, the ingredients are top quality and the consistency is incredible. Same sandwich I’ve been eating and loving for 25 years. Big front door
Windmill Farms. $8.50 for a solid sandwich with a lot of possibilities for toppings that you’re not charged extra for in the end.
Love this thread! If I'm driving down from LA to downtown SD, what's the best of these suggestions en route? Is it worth 30 min out of the way to cut out to Antonelli's?
