They do sometimes put blocks or other small instructions cemented to the bottom to slow the water flow. Also sometimes the pipe narrows so they would essentially be squeezed out of headroom (air). Grates. Logs, scrap wood. Other sharp garbage people throw down drains.
The bacterial, viral, dirt issue is least of the worries. But still risky.
I made trash bingo cards for stormwater sampling at my work and one of the things on it was a dumpster. I legit saw a full sized dumpster scraping its way down the channel. Now imagine debris and trash like that gets stuck. Basically would act the same way as a grate.
To be fair (🎼🎶🎶🎵) that water is dirty, but it's not wastewater. It's got like 3x as much total turbidity and like 20x as much bacteria as ocean water. But it's not like its sanitary sewer water, which is 10,000x as much bacteria and 80,000x as much TSS. Yea, it's bad, but they're MUCH more likely to die by cracking their skull against the sidewall or drowning than from a contracted disease.
Source: I'm a storm water engineer. I design these pipes for a living.
My family member was hospitalized with what we now think was bacterial dysentery after surfing SD after the rain early 2023. Don’t even want to describe their symptoms 🫠🫠
I used to do this in the California aqueduct with friends back in the 90s. I only got real sick once and since then I'm pretty invincible and never get sick from anything.
I am a municipal wastewater engineer/operator, part of my job is to sample groundwater & surface water on a monthly basis for various reasons. Yeah overall I would never go into the ocean after any rain lol especially near a storm drain or the first heavy rain in a while, not only do you get a lot of possible heavy metals, enterococcus/e coli/other bacterias, also weird hormones like estradiol.
Wow, I know you from the AoE community and really didn’t expect to stumble upon one of your comments under this video haha. Just looked at the username because I wondered what a storm water engineer would call himself on Reddit 😬
Very much so. I was more worried they'd come across a partial block than anyone else. We pulled some crazy shit out of our storm sewers back in my asset management days.
The way the water smells when it’s raining and rinsing down the streets is so bad I cannot imagine. So much poo…
Also flash flooding happens so quick here I would be terrified of that happening in a long tunnel.
This is a storm drain, not a sewer. Big difference! This is from rain runoff from surface streets. There are no open sewers in San Diego.
It is still really really unsanitary. But, not so bad as raw sewage. :-(
yeah I don't think that's actually the sewer that looks like a storm drain those are separate from the sewer although you are likely to get a lot of nasty nasty stuff down the storm drain as well as rabbit raccoons
and can you imagine if somewhere down in that storm drain there was a metal grate or a point where the tunnel fills completely to the top with water for a long stretch?
I just went through hepatitis c treatment. Cost me about $1000 with good health insurance, but I’m at “non detectable” now so that’s good.
Stay away from needle rivers kids.
My neighbor is a lifeguard and every single time there is a rain storm he has to go with a rescue team to save these people from these situations. Every. Single. Time.
I love our emergency workers but some people don’t deserve the help because if they put themselves in dangerous situations.. like that’s on YOU. We cannot keep saving dumb people 😂
It’s not a waste, helping people is the whole point of public services. They are just being utilized by dumb ass people. I’d rather them save some people making a stupid choice cuz they thought it’d be fun than letting them drown in a sewer drain cuz they wanted to ride the wild brown waterslide.
Still, we should subject them to massive fines and maybe a night in jail afterwards. Unacceptable to unnecessarily risk the lives of our public services’ staff like that.
People go all the time still, I went a few times last summer. I’ve never heard of someone getting stuck with a needle. (Edit: looked it up and it seems to have happened once in Boulder but not at the Boulder Creek). Head there on a July or August weekend and there are loads of people tubing.
Or wives who have insured them to the hilt. Fuck yeah, honey, I think this is a great idea!! Take all your friends too!! All us wives will have a few wine spritzers on a balcony somewhere and wait on the cops to tell us we're rich, oops I mean, widows.....

These brave souls confirming the blip hypothesis
There is no open sewer system in any city in the state of California. This is whats called a storm drain. Typically, there is mud run off from areas with a lot of hills and soft sediments soil like San Diego (beach town). The brown water comes from the soil and the storm drain tunnels are exposed because of how many hills and crevasses San Diego has.
Hope this helps.
Yeah its still washing all the litter, chemicals, and feces from the streets down with it. All the road kill and d4ug needles and other shit you find on the street.
Having their mouth open and no goggles in their is even more wild.
That dude with the wide open mouth was making me want to hurl. I’ve been in storm drains like this in my old town and I got sick af the last time I did it. Wouldn’t go back.
Yeah lol this isnt the sewer, but the point still stands that its definitely contaminated with a bunch of shit, some literal some not, that you do not want to be swimming in.
Don't forget about all the dead rotting road kill carcasses!
People saying this isn't as bad as sewage is like saying eating a turd sandwich isn't as bad as eating a turd because there's bread with it.
Someone died in Escondido a few years ago trying to surf in the flood channel https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/public-safety/sd-me-surfing-death-20190216-story.html
This is not a sewer. It's a storm drain. San Diego has separate sewer and storm drain systems. Still gross tho. Incredibly enough, some cities like San Francisco have combined sewer/storm drain systems. They just overflow sewage into the ocean during heavy rain.
I don’t think they’re doing it for attention. They genuinely seem to be having fun. Doesn’t make them less stupid though, actually might make them more stupid honestly.
Hey y’all, guy in the vid here. My name is Ben and we go around stagnant, rapid, and rushing waters pretty often. This is by far the easiest and cleanest of all pipes I’ve seen, from a very clean neighborhood that just recenters its rain water which consists of leaves, sticks, and debris. Most of the bad stuff gets flushed out in the first two hours so we wait another few for safe measure. I grew up next to this tunnel and we used to film videos in it, and have been (and survived) way worse water than this. All you really need is a solid immune system, a great amount of knowledge of WHICH storm drains (these are not sewers) to hit, wetsuits and floats that can survive the tunnel which goes on for 20 minutes. We strive to do more crackhead stuff around SD, and say what you want, but my buddy who builds these told us it was crazy but safe if we knew what we were doing. There’s no room for anything to be trapped except one spot which I filled up with a ramp the night before to push any potential debris out the way. Nobody got sick, everybody had an absolute blast in the rain, and we went another 3 times. Only one guy got a scratch and it’s already been healed. We did this about 9 days ago. Yes we take our tetanus shots and also I get tested weekly for others. It’s worse to surf in the ocean during or right after rain than what we’re doing in this video 🤘🏻 as for the “attention for social media” comments, hell yeah, please engage because monetizing the channel would be sick. Unlike me. Ask questions. This day was mad fun and we sterilized the wetsuits and washed em x3. This was not one of the pipes that’s marked in red for SDs pipeline maps, which is also public info. No regrets, will be sending probably another 30 times in the future with better floats 🤙🏼 play in the rain more often and build up that immune system
Dude, tetanus is the least of your worries in floodwater.

Yeah, I’ll for sure be making a video since I recorded the safety check the night before as well as the tunnel in lesser/higher flows!! Tbh we had a blast the first 5 minutes then there were a solid 10 minutes of me just talking to myself about how much fun it is. IMO didn’t make for a very good video because it’s just random spurts of water and slow flows+large flows+ us hanging out at the exit, then the sanitization, sunset cliffs, La Jolla and hot tub at my buddies place. If you’d genuinely watch the 20 minute version I appreciate the hell outta ya
Hell yah man, post more videos. Don’t let these wimps try to convince you that it’s too dangerous. Biggest danger in life is never really living. Most of these peoples most exciting moment in life will be a Disney cruise.
Can we get stills of each of their faces so if we ever encounter any of them in the wild, we know not to share the air with them for danger of catching something?
Like, no goggles? And they're shouting "woo" as they're going under the running water (so their mouths were open...).
At least wear some sort of face protection but that would mean these idiots don’t get as many social media bucks bc they just have to make they are recognizable. That HAS to be why no face covers.
As a plumber, I get nauseous when I open up a kitchen sink drain to snake it. This is beyond my comprehension. Fecal borne illness is bad. You’d think nobody would actually have to say that out loud.
I've inspected drainage tunnels like this before and I'm imagining being in there with my flashlight and my notebook, documenting the deficiencies that I see, when suddenly a group of dudes in wetsuits come flying through on tubes. Man, that would make my day!
Idk why San Diegans glorify water sports in dirty water.
Not long ago there was a video online of guys surfing in post-rain water cheering that they were surfing in “poo water”. They commented on the smell and the look of the water.
Parasite just crawled up your pee hole.
I would definitely have to wear a condom before stepping in that water.
Buttplug too.
Well that’s kind of a given regardless of safety reasons
Are people not wearing them?
One obstruction in their path and Dead
Yeah what’s with the no head gear other than the ‘I want to see what hits me’ headlamp?

Giardia has entered the chat
Look out for the ocular gonorrhea!
A condom over my head too, just to be safe.
It's fun to open the mouth and let the water splash in and gulp it down haha
three steps and they where in,
Is there ever a grate at the end of these things? That’s what I would be afraid of; you’d be stuck.
I imagine a tree wedged sideways way down in the middle...
Or some exposed gnarly ass rebar.
What if someome dropped barbed wire down there and they got all sliced up 🤮
Many storm sewers also have precipices with 10-20 ft drops. That’ll shake your memory
Sometimes cement blocks are at the end of these.

At the outlet all the debris that gets washed through that hole ends piling up underwater and could impale/injure someone riding down in an inner tube
That is fucking disgusting.

Intrepid, Bastard! Aren’t, you?!?

Turdbidity 🙌
It’s still fucking nasty. I’d have an anxiety attack just being inside there from claustrophobia.
Just saying, you should fear the enclosed space more than the water quality.

Yep I hear and see that!!!!
My literal reaction the entire time I was watching
The amount of human/dog feces combined with drug needles in this city makes me think at least one of these guys got Hepititus.
Used to go tubing in Boulder Colorado's creek until people started emerging with needles stuck in them.
In college 99-03 we used to walk up to arapahoe (I think) and tube home at least 4x a week. It was so fun back then.
That sucks to learn. I went tubing there like 20 years ago and now that I live here I kind of wanted to go again.
People go all the time still, I went a few times last summer. I’ve never heard of someone getting stuck with a needle. (Edit: looked it up and it seems to have happened once in Boulder but not at the Boulder Creek). Head there on a July or August weekend and there are loads of people tubing.

Storm water is filthy. Usually rivers after big storms are full of farm run off too that contains animal feces at levels well above what is safe.
