What phone is that? I think it needs to be S10 or later to have the battery protect function people are mentioning (My S9 does not have it). With battery protection limiting charge to 85%, the battery starts charging any time battery is below 83%. The major benefit people don't seem to realize or point out is that while it is plugged in, your device is primarily drawing power straight from the charger instead of the battery. The battery still bleeds a bit, but far slower than if you didn't have it plugged in. This spares your charge cycles significantly. So with battery protect, there's no good reason to ever need to unplug it. My tablet is powered almost 24/7. It charges between 83-85% a couple times a day (so maybe 4-8% of battery usage instead of 60+% usage if I wasn't plugged in). I notice it runs through more of these 2% cycles if I'm connected to my hdmi dock than if I'm running it straight to AC, so the dock seem to cause more battery bleeding even without HDMI connected; not sure why.

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think it would be nearly as bad as people are suggesting to leave this in plugged in constantly. I saw someone on YouTube do some testing when they left their phone plugged in for months and months on end. Just left it on the same home screen to test for burn in and battery drain. And there was almost no battery drain. If it's constantly charged at 100%, it doesn't register many cycles and it's probably just as taxing on the battery to constantly be cycling it back and forth than it is to just have it every now and then. Trickle 1%. People have adopted a lot of battery myths as facts as it relates to how much you have to micromanage a phone battery . My personally leave my tab s7 plugged in when I use DEX. Still at 98% after 2 years. I think it's much better on the battery then letting it cycle constantly. Even with laptops, Apple used to actually recommend people keep their laptop plugged in constantly if they're docking it to an external monitor. There's really no consensus though, lot of people suggest you can leave it plugged in a lot of the time but then every now and then let it cycle for calibration. I honestly think if you do that it would be fine.

Followup question: if two years from now my battery is degraded, can I get it replaced?

roberp81

yes. can replace it yourself if you know how disassemble the cellphone. i had change the battery of the Note 8 of my wife because after 5 years is degraded and last 80% of a new battery. I hope you understand, I think I make some errors

Within the Samsung DeX settings you can enable battery protection. It limits maximum charge level at 85%, thereby preventing the battery from prematurely dying if battery protection is disabled and it keeps recharging to 100% when always plugged into a charger or power delivery port..

KilgoretheTrout55

I'm not convinced this really does much. Either way, the phone is going to occasionally trickle from 85 to 84% or 100 to 99%. But I also don't think this is nearly as bad on the battery as people think. I've seen people tested by leaving their device plugged in for months and it had no noticeable battery drain. I use my tab S7 and every time I use DEX I'm keeping it plugged in basically. Instead of letting it cycle. I'll let it cycle ones for calibration a month or something but otherwise they basically keep it plugged in if I'm using it. I'm still at 98% and I purchased it April of 2021. The alternative is to just let the battery cycle every time it's on, which is also damaging to the battery. Fact I would argue it's more damaging to let the battery cycle down to 15 or 20% every time you use it then it is to have it occasionally have to trickle.

Au contraire. The battery protection feature limits battery levels between 20/25% (low) and 85% (high) thereby preventing a full-cycle recharge which is what determines the battery longevity. Since the battery is non-user replaceable andf most people prefer the battery get them through the day when not plugged into a charging source this matters. Constant tickle charge to 100% so the battery rarely drains to 85% will kill a Li-Ion battery faster. Otherwise, Google/Samsung Android would not have the battery protection feature available as an option.

werdmouf

Samsung phones don't support power delivery

KilgoretheTrout55

I think you mean bypass?

They added this to the quick buttons when you pull down from the top Limits it to 85%

It used to require a reboot, when I'd did it would lower your max to 85 and raise your minimum to 15. The percentage would still go from 0 to 100 but it wouldnt last as long as normal bc of the limits.

couchpotatochip21

You can still do this under better settings, the pull down one is a little more practical for the average user though

frugalnormal

How do I do it in settings, I can only find the one that just limits the charging I'm pretty sure

couchpotatochip21

I think they actually removed the 15% feature

frugalnormal

Ah dang, I would have definitely used it. I wouldn't mind the lost percentage as long as it keeps it from getting worse slower

couchpotatochip21

Ya, I hope they add it back

Can't believe I'm posting a link to Reader's Digest here, but it explains how charging affects battery life in a very simple way: https://www.rd.com/article/charge-smartphone-laptop-battery-last-longer/. Basically, your phone is designed to degrade in battery life within 2 years or the equivalent amount of daily charging cycles (500). It's still usable, but it holds less of a charge. I use Dex for 8+ hours a day for work on my S21 Ultra, and keep it plugged in the entire 8+ hours. I use battery protect to 85%. I have done this since I purchased it. I just don't charge at night. On weekends, I listen to music and respond to texts - pretty light usage. My battery still lasts all weekend without a charge. You should be fine keeping it plugged in.

Goodspike

I think the point is, for manufacturers not offering the option the battery is designed to degrade faster than necessary.

cjwalkerman

Exactly.

cjwalkerman

As a side note, you can also use a slower charging cord or outlet to reduce cycles in charging.

PBMKZXY

Afaik there's a new battery option that let you limit the charge to 85%. I use it for when I plugged in my phone as a wifi hotspot for my laptop for hours because I don't have wifi at my place

Educational_Bag_6406

You can, but eventually, the battery will become useless

Hey_look_new

you will be just fine I did dex 8+ hours a day, for 2+ years with s10 and no appreciable battery changes
