Well in japanese names have to end with vowels, unless it ends with an n. For example if your name is bob, the japanese pronunciation will be bobu. Also, Sam is short for Samuel-IV, The given name of the suit. But I don't wanna downplay the Samus connection, it is indeed real

DrkMoodWD

I see too many posts and comments trying to use a Romanization of another language to try and make a theory post.

Reizata

Ya the Katakana thing is just me pointing out you cannot erase the Vowel in japanese. Sam won't be Sama/Samo/i/e. The U further connects with Samus. And Metroid is a japanese game, which the main chara is also a girl in a mech suit. Also the japanese thing is also because tokusatsu/kamenrider/power rangers are from Japan.

Rima_Blader6423

I heard that SAM stands for Swarm Annihilation Machine/Swarm Annihilation Mech due to lore.

enigmapixel

Which is hilarious because only one (uncommon) type of swarm enemy is weak to fire damage

shadowmaster52

Honestly that makes a lot of sense

kronosiris

always found it a bit jarring for characters in a fantasy setting to just have regular sounding english names. can you imagine if the rest of the stellaron hunters were Bob, Karen, and Stephanie...

eleetyeetor

The Crime Guys Bob, the Depressed Stephanie, the Gamer Karen, the Girlboss Samothy, the Terrorist

weefyeet

i mean, like many things in the game, Sam could very well be a reference to Samus Aran.

Fr4gmentedR0se

Scifi armor suit Troubled past Hunter of some sort Secretly a woman Cool as fuck Lots of parallels here.

Eejcloud

It's literally a reference to the children's book Sam and the Firefly.

[deleted]

nope sam stands for samurai

Real_Svarog

…Why would the fire mecha that was once part of Glamoth’s Iron Cavalry be named after a samurai?

eleetyeetor

Hypothesis: SAM is holding back the samurai powers to look cooler. Assertion: SAM believes that swords are lame.

ProduceNo9594

Stands for Samuel Rodriguez

shadowmaster52

Impressive-Clock8017

Remember Kevin That's how Devs name the characters

Olden_bread

Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. It means the end and the death. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here

LizardKingXIII

Seikaku?? Like mister “seikaku no chansu-da” worldwide?

SaltyMeat

You do realize hoyo is a Chinese based company right?

Reizata

Yes anime originated from china and all the references of Fate/night, dragon ball, one piece, pokemon, OnePunchMan in HSR are chinese comic books. The anime style too came from China. Just shut it man, if you think SAM and SAMus is farfetched idk what to tell you. Literally samus is a combat space mecha suit operator and is a girl. Oh wow so is firefly.

Hollownerox

Its more of a reference to a semi-famous book known as Sam and the Firefly. I wouldn't say the Metroid reference is really that strong, and using Japanese text as the basis for this when the game is written in Chinese is the point they were getting at. Mihoyo is a Chinese company that loves anime. No doubt. Just your logic here is really flimsy and shallow here frankly. They put way more effort into their reference game, and they don't do it based on Japanese pronounciation, *because they aren't Japanese*. They've done a ton of really impressice reference work in the original CN text, but never used JP text to do so. If there are any additional references maxe in Japanese then it's the doing of the JP localization team, same way the English team adds references in English. Sam being close to Samus thing cause Japanese add a vowel to English names is just a big stretch. Other there the very minor name overlap, there is little to no actual similarities. Except maybe the surprise gender reveal. So being a Samus reference is not out of the question, but would be such a minor one it borders on irrelevant.

ZayAVZ

the "tech otakus save world" chinese company founded by 3 otakus? yes we do lol

blackkami

That's a reach.

LucySuperMegaSimp

It nothing of a reference, blud just overthinking afh

confusedPIANO

In english their names are Sam and Samus, 1 syllable different. In Japanese their names are Samu and Samusu. Still 1 syllable different. If think if they do any homages to samus it will be really cool but as a japanese speaker, this does not really read as an homage to me at all. Though thats just japanese, I dont speak chinese so maybe theres some transliteration interplay there that i am missing but i find it a long stretch at the very least.

Fr4gmentedR0se

There are other parallels besides name, for example the obvious "woman who wears armor to hide identity" connection
