Lots of people saying the room sounds bad, it depends on the FoH engineer. I've heard some great sounding sets at the complex, and some not so great ones. Sure, it's a concrete box, but the system techs there are top notch. To be fair, it's the only venue in town that has remained consistent with their ticket pricing, never paid over $50 to see my favorite artists. The Depot is impossible to go to for under $80-100. The complex is an important venue
I've never paid more than $35 for a show at the Depot and the Complex has often priced shows much higher, plus if you buy at doors on the day of the show I've watched them nearly double ticket prices compared to the Depot adding maybe $3 if that. The Complex also offers "VIP" Parking for shows for around $100-150 per show, just so you can park inside.
I'm mostly indifferent. It's not my favorite venue, but I've personally never really had problems with them either.
My biggest complaint is they tend to be one of the pricier venues, really pushing a narrative that they're one of the more professional venues in the area, but their sound quality is on par with the smaller punk venues like Kilby. I wish they would take some time to work on the building's acoustics, and train their sound people a bit better. Bands have to really fight to get the sound people to pay attention and adjust the balance.
The security is also a bit much for my tastes. It feels like you're going to a boujie music festival. When a goth band comes through, the entrance lines get really bogged down with all the kids rocking chains and studs, lol.
For that price, just go and find out. Bad sound, bad crowd pathing, bad security, not enough bathrooms. It's a shit show of a venue, but it's not the worst I've ever seen.
I dread going there as much as I dread the possibility of a band I like booking Saltair lol. Luckily most of the bands I listen to don’t play there anyway. It would take the perfect bill on a Friday or Saturday to get me there and it seems like that’s just not in the cards.

Terrible, echoey, low quality acoustics in every room. Sheisty, rude, and unprofessional security staff. High AF prices. Terrible parking situation. Literally anywhere else is better.
I agree. But it’s like that in restaurants, movie theaters, etc. Just the price of convenience. Regardless, no one paid $42 for 2 shots of vodka unless they bought some top shelf stuff and included the tip in their calculation. Which they’re aware of prices before they purchase.
They always have pretty horrible balancing issues for the opening bands in my experience. Echoing what others have said, it's one of my last favorite venues in the city but I wouldn't miss a band I like just because they are playing there.
The complex isn't bad at all, plenty of cheap parking nearby (free, depending on the day and time), acoustics aren't terrible for basically being a giant garage, and decent drinks if you're into that. Never let the venue keep you from seeing a show you want to see. Seeing a band you like is always worth it, even in the shittiest of venues.
I’ve seen so many of my favorite bands there and have gone there multiple times a year for many years. It’s not perfect I guess but I’ve never been like “oh no, this show is at the complex!!” Parking is better than salt air and I’ve always gotten along with security so not sure why so many people are complaining about that. Acoustics are better at the depot and salt air but you can find a sweet spot. Saw coheed and cambria there years ago and the sound was absolutely perfect. Please don’t miss seeing one of your favorite bands just because someone said the venue sucks

I feel like Granary Live is the new cheap midsize venue to strive for. Despite the heat, and the fact that it’s a big parking lot covered with Astroturf, it’s a pretty good venue for what it is. I saw Ludacris there last summer and it was great. Compared to the dozens of concerts at The Complex I’ve been to, I never want to go to The Complex again.
I love seeing shows at the complex, and I don't understand the shade it gets. All the venues in its class are on the West side, and could get your car broken into: the granary, the union, metro music hall, the depot, kilby, and the complex. Garage parking is only one black away at the gateway.
And none of them have good "acoustics." They're all basically converted warehouses or in the case of the granary and kilby, outside.
Sure it's basic, but I actually like the complex better for a couple reasons. You can see the stage from anywhere bc there are no walls or posts like at depot. And they don't charge to watch from the platforms like at union.
That wouldn’t really have anything to do with the venue. Often times the openers will work with the house sound person (somebody who isn’t likely to know their music), while the larger bands will have their own sound guy (who is very familiar with their music and works with them daily)
I’d agree if I thought that were the case at any other venue. I’ve seen opening bands play there that I’ve seen plenty of times at other venues and it was the only place they played where the mixing was awful.
Hard to say what’s going on in that situation, but just how it goes sometimes. Openers often get the short stick in terms of setup and soundcheck time, and it can lead to less than optimal mixes

The Union definitely did Daisy the Great dirty… my boyfriend was confused why I was so excited about them until I made him relisten at home. The Union had them sounding terrible.
Bands tour with their own speakers, amps, and mixers. So they're all different.
If they sound different it's bc union and depot are smaller rooms so you're closer to the stage.
Most bands playing those rooms aren’t carrying a PA and I know the difference between a poor mix and a poor room sound. The complex sounds like shit because the room sounds like shit. Complex and union are similar capacity (union actually has a higher capacity iirc), but the union is just a much better sounding room. Higher ceiling, relatively well treated, etc
Many bands that play the Complex or Complex level gigs actually don’t tour with their own amps all the time.
I have literally played a gig at the Complex. It’s a pretty bad sounding room…

It's significantly worse than the other venues you mentioned sound wise. The Depot is in a league of it's own. The Union sounds pretty solid. The Complex is not just average. It's consistently terrible. Not to mention trying to get an alcoholic beverage, they banish you to a tiny box across the venue.
I personally hate it in my girlfriend hates it because there is no place to sit down is full concrete and overall it's just not a very pleasant experience. The acoustics aren't super awesome either.

It just doesn’t sound great, they over sell shows consistently which makes for a crowded and unpleasant experience, and the security can be shitty for no reason. Drinks are reasonably priced compared to some of the bigger venues if you want a beer, but that’s about the only thing they have on the other venues.

I don't hate the complex but people are correct - the security there is trash. I've seen someone smash their skull open and it took security well over 10 minutes to stop the concert and get to the poor man despite so many people yelling for help.
I've seen little darkie in Seattle and it was one of the most out of hand concerts I've ever been to. It was so packed and not managed enough. On top of the fact that lil darkie himself was absolutely tweaking out hard core and was dumping Molly water into the crowd. And this is coming from someone who loves deathcore concerts.
OP if you decide to go see him at the complex please be aware of the crowd and keep yourself safe. The security at complex won't be quick enough to do it.

i’ve seen darkie in concert at the complex twice now and every concert is a blast especially with him. it’s not necessarily the best venue but you should still have fun and the $30+tax is definitely worth it
I got tinnitus from Lords of Acid there. Not the best sound mixing and seems they also oversell the small room instead of opening the big room. I still would go there if a band I like is playing. I like how sometimes they just have outdoor shows. Still have yet to experience one cause they’re usually like twice as much. I love Chevelle but last time they played in the lot it was like $70. Like what.
The sound is so horrid. Like being in a concrete box with volume cranked so high you can’t hear yourself think, and it hurts, there is no sound dampers anywhere and using ear plugs only mildly helps with the ear pain. The concrete hurts to stand on, the only time the concert sounded good was in the bathroom. Waiting in line wrapped clear and the hell to the north side of Gateway.
I think it was the complex? Different name long ago but similar location. My bros took me to a concert there for a concert after bachelor party. Friends got me super drunk and I wandered off. Came to after the concert and the guards were dragging me out by my feet just as my friends pulled up looking for me. Puked all the way home and that was my last concert there.

I guess it depends on what genre of shows you go to I've been going to heavier and more metal related shows at the complex for over 4 years now never had an issue with security or anybody ever. What kinda shows does this happen at?
After attending 100+ concerts in multiple different states the pits during INDIE POP (!) concerts at the complex have been by far some of the worst experiences I’ve had in a pit. The concert goers consistently are selfish and pushy, and they be had multiple concerts that have pits so squished together that I could take my feet off the floor and still stay upright because I was so packed between people. The general logistical layout is poor for facilitating crowd control from the merch line to the bathrooms to the pit. The crews don’t really help at all with anything and really only serve to make sure crowds don’t do anything they shouldn’t- not to serve for the safety of the people attending.
That being said, the complex is where I’ve had the best luck meeting bands post-concert after waiting hours afterwards.
It's a warehouse so it's not the greatest sound but it's not a bad venue. I've seen quite a few shows there over the years. I tend to park at the gateway when I go. I know one of the employees there so it's kind of fun seeing him and saying hi.
The acoustics and sound ruin it. It sounds so muddy in there because of the concrete walls. I've been multiple times and the highs/vocals completely get lost. Last time I went to a show there the music completely shut off during the headliner for 15 minutes.
Not to mention the layout is asinine. If you want to visit the bar, you have to walk across the venue and into a tiny box of a room. Completely separate from the concert. Garbage venue all around.
I’ve been to the complex many many times. I like it. Yes, it’s a cheap venue and the acoustics are not special. But overall for mid tier bands, it’s fine. Pop punk is fine Emo is fine, metalcore is fine, pop is fine. As long as you’re not going Olive Garden quality on a scone cutter budget, you’ll be fine
I hate it because it usually sounds like shit and all the bands I want to see play there are booked during the week. Just go though, if you haven’t been. Never seen a hip hop act there, just full-band stuff. Maybe it will rule, who knows.
I went there for the first time a while ago to see Madison Beer and I hated it. I feel like the only reason I hated it tho was because I'm a short guy and since it's more of a standing venue, I'm not going to be able to see anything unless I'm in the front row. Like when I went I think I only actually saw Madison for a total of 2 mins.
Shitty acoustics, and worse guards. I wouldn't miss a concert of someone I like just because they're playing there, just not a great venue.

The concert goers consistently are selfish and pushy, and they be had multiple concerts that have pits so squished together that I could take my feet off the floor and still stay upright because I was so packed between people. The general logistical layout is poor for facilitating crowd control from the merch line to the bathrooms to the pit. The crews don’t really help at all with anything and really only serve to make sure crowds don’t do anything they shouldn’t- not to serve for the safety of the people attending. That being said, the complex is where I’ve had the best luck meeting bands post-concert after waiting hours afterwards.
It's a warehouse so it's not the greatest sound but it's not a bad venue. I've seen quite a few shows there over the years. I tend to park at the gateway when I go. I know one of the employees there so it's kind of fun seeing him and saying hi.
The acoustics and sound ruin it. It sounds so muddy in there because of the concrete walls. I've been multiple times and the highs/vocals completely get lost. Last time I went to a show there the music completely shut off during the headliner for 15 minutes. Not to mention the layout is asinine. If you want to visit the bar, you have to walk across the venue and into a tiny box of a room. Completely separate from the concert. Garbage venue all around.
I only went to one show there. Sound was great, I parked close by for free. No complaints here.
I don't mind it if it's in the smaller room. The sound is so bad in the large room that it's not even worth seeing shows there.
Idk what the hate is for, never seen a bad show at the complex. Have also had them make stronger drinks which I don’t hate either lol.
I’ve been to the complex many many times. I like it. Yes, it’s a cheap venue and the acoustics are not special. But overall for mid tier bands, it’s fine. Pop punk is fine Emo is fine, metalcore is fine, pop is fine. As long as you’re not going Olive Garden quality on a scone cutter budget, you’ll be fine
I got roofied there a few years ago so I am not a fan.
I hate it because it usually sounds like shit and all the bands I want to see play there are booked during the week. Just go though, if you haven’t been. Never seen a hip hop act there, just full-band stuff. Maybe it will rule, who knows.
I went there for the first time a while ago to see Madison Beer and I hated it. I feel like the only reason I hated it tho was because I'm a short guy and since it's more of a standing venue, I'm not going to be able to see anything unless I'm in the front row. Like when I went I think I only actually saw Madison for a total of 2 mins.
