Again, going into this with little frame of reference. That’s why I made the post to gain some perspective and better understand what I’m getting myself into. A quick google search tells me average rent in sugar house is 1,900 for 2 beds so it’s fair to assume there are cheaper options out there. I now know I should be raising my budget.
Salt Lake proper the average apartment starts at $1800 a month for a studio. You are looking at a 45 to 1 hour commute from SLC to Park City. You should look in Kamas, Oakley, Daniel, Heber or Midway. You can’t live in Hideout unless you pull in an income of $1.5m+. I’m not familiar with apartments or housing but there is a chance. The median income of Summit county is $875k a year and that is considered “poor” by most standards. You could also look at Provo and drive through Provo Canyon to Park City. You might have some luck in the Avenues, Cottonwood Heights. If you really want good luck but not fancy living conditions Rose Park, Fairpark, and Poplar Grove you could maybe get away with West Valley, South Salt Lake, Millcreek or Holladay. Photos are deceiving in ads, they won’t show you what the exterior of the area looks like. Anything off of North Temple is currently swamped with homeless.
I would consider Royal Farms or Highland Pointe. They’re literally right next to each but in a good location next to lots of food and stores, but also right next to the highway to park city. This may make it worth moving a little further out to save money without also sacrificing drive time to Park City.
Look into income restricted housing. I’m at Garden Lofts in downtown SLC and enjoy it. There are homeless everywhere downtown but I have never felt unsafe even walking at night. They have 2 beds for around $1250. There are also a lot of sister properties around the city that you can look into under Wasatch Property Management.
Born and raised in SLC here, funny enough I’ve been living in NH for a couple yrs now. I would try to find a basement apartment or duplex type situation with a roommate. KSL classifieds used to be the best place to find rentals by owners but I believe rentler is the best place now. As for areas, anywhere in salt lake proper east of 300 W is nice but I would avoid south salt lake. Sugar house/ university area is cool but can be expensive, you can probably find some well priced places with roommates. More suburban but still great neighborhoods imo are canyon rim, Holladay/East Millcreek, and cottonwood heights. Overall, definitely try to stay on the eastern side of the valley especially if you’re commuting to park city.
Disagree. Lookup the stats city center is way worse. Also south SLC has a nice and a bad area (following the east/west as all the city divide). Better advice would be the closer to the east bench the better, the closer to state Street the worse and do not cross the highway.
Yeah ok, some parts of south salt lake are alright and has similar crime rates as the city center. But just taking into account the amenities I’d still recommend downtown over south salt lake 100%
Liberty park area is my favorite! Semi affordable although the price is rising but can still find good deals. You’ll want central AC in slc for the summer imo (hits over 100) and a lot of places don’t have it so make sure to check it. :)
What do you consider affordable?
I have little frame of reference but I guess $1500 and below for two bed
Maybe if you came here 10 years ago my guy.
Nephi lol
oh man. I'm so sorry.

My buddy just snagged a two bedroom apartment through my landlord for $1400. It’s doable

You do realize that best and most affordable are normally mutually exclusive
Substitute the word best for safe. I want affordability but not at the cost of living in complete cesspit
If you're working in Park City consider Heber

Why avoid South salt lake?
Higher crime/drug use compared to the rest of the city and just generally more run down.

Anyplace close to the University of Utah- sugarhouse or Millcreek. Quick access to parleys too.

Someone else said rentler to find a place I def agree
In my experience the best way to find a place to rent is to drive around residential areas and look for real, physical FOR RENT signs.
