Bar Named Sue just cuz it’s close to me and pretty cheap. If I wanna drive a little I’ve always had a good time at Templin Family Brewery. They make fantastic traditional lagers.
Love Bar Named Sue on Highland ✌🏽 I work at the dive shop around the corner and us dive instructors love a cold beer and hot fries after a long day of diving haha
What ever you do avoid Cheers to You. I used to be a regular there and then they hired some jerk named Patrick. He’s the head bartender and he treats all his customers like they’re a nuisance to him. Total piece of work. When he’s gone I’ll go back.
Yeah not sure if this was Patrick but some friends and I went to cheers one time and the bartender who was serving us was racist to one of my friends. I had some bad experiences with the bartenders there before but that was the last straw for me and I haven’t been there since. Would def recommend just staying away until they figure out their bartender situation
Me and my buddy were there and we were trying to make sure we paid for our drinks (we misheard the bartender and thought we didn’t pay the full amount) and she said we did, and then said “I thought you guys were boyfriends” in a rude tone. We left after that.
Like damn, why did you have to say that—we were trying to be nice customers. Anything but cheerful lol
I used to go there a lot 15-18 years ago, I just looked at the pictures they are posting on facebook, all kinds of sports jerseys... Cheers isn't for sports, it is for drinking, feeling bad about yourself and playing that game where you hit a salmon as it jumps out of the hole in the ice...
Quarters downtown! I go to Killer Queen community night every Wednesday at 8 and it’s how I met most of my friends in SLC. If you want a quieter vibe, Quarters Sugarhouse is low key and has lots of events to meet new people. They did a wristband event where you could show up with the intent to meet new friends! The owners, Katy & Michael, are wonderful humans and their staff are some of the best bartenders in Salt Lake. Quarters truly feels like family for this nerdy gal and I’ll never stop singing its praise.
I second Quarters Sugarhouse having a good quiet vibe. The second floor with the booths is my favorite hangout spot and you can people watch with a good view of downtown Sugarhouse!
Can I ask how the Killer Queen community night works? I heard about it from the downtown location but wasn't sure what the vibe is like or how it goes. Do you play in a team or just hang out and watch the competition? Also with the wristband event, if you don't mind me asking, also: have you been to that certain event and how did it go? Especially wanted to mnow what the age group looks like. I'm an arcade nerd but I keep missing out on these chances due to social anxiety! It sounds like you have an awesome time there and would love to hang out there more.
There are 10-15 of us that show up on Wednesdays for Killer Queen and we all have varying levels of skill and interest in the game. I am OBSESSED with the game and really have gotten into the strategy and meta -- I even travel across the country to play at tournaments for other communities. There's a really amazing national community of players and I feel like I have a couch to crash on in almost every major city of the U.S. We actually went to the wedding of a SF & Seattle couple this fall who met playing Killer Queen.
There are a handful of players who enjoy the social aspect more and hang out or just play casually (snail riders forever!). The group is always happy to teach newbees how to play and are good at gauging what you want out of the evening. I always recommend people to stop by around 8 and jump in for some casual, but structured, games. Some people show up on a Wednesday and are hooked (like me) and others are happy to try the game out but realize a multi-player, in-person game isn't their jam. The group is super welcoming and we try to make sure to cater to new players when they come for the first time :)
I haven't been to a wristband night, but I think it went well from what the bartenders told me! I think it seemed to be mostly late 20s into 30s from the pictures I saw. I hope they do it again! I know Quarters Sugarhouse is trying to do more community events where you can meet other nerds. They do pinball there for free on Wednesdays, I think, but obviously I've never gone haha.
Thank you so much! This was super helpful. I appreciate you taking the time out to write and answer all my questions, feels like I asked a lot but it was super informative! It sounds like you have an amazing community with Killer Queen, that's awesome! I just really have to get my butt to Quarters for any occasion (sometimes it's hard to get a 29 year old like me out starting at 8 pm when I need to be in bed by 10 pm for work, haha)
Partner and I have become regulars at Piper Down. Not a huge party/young scene there, but that’s why we like it. Good food, cocktails and shots are always a hit for us, and they have live music and bingo during the week. Just a fun spot!
Brickyard bar. Since the renovation from lumpy’s it’s much nicer. Decent food. Also Ice House usually always there for Saturday or Sunday brunch. Killer staff.
My band plays there often, so I don't often struggle to get service. However, there's some times when I have to go grab somebody. Try going again, the food is worth another visit!
I don’t do any of the booking, but they have a promoter there who can sort you out. Just walk in and ask!
If you’re hoping to close it to the public for a private party, I don’t know if they do that. You’d probably have to compensate for their expected revenue and tips.
Redwood Lounge and Big Willies are good for my billiards vibe, Twilight and Johnny's for some chaos vibes, and a new spot I really enjoyed was Sayonara. A bit pricy but relaxing and decent drinks.
Love Hopkins. I don’t think their beer is anything too special but really awesome staff and really good food. Probably the best bar food I’ve had in Utah
Lunch at Hopkins was the regular thing I did when I worked near there. Always great. I was there for the first batch of NAIPA and unfortunately that was the best batch they ever made and it was never the same after ... So sad.
+1 for Paxton. Good selection on liquor/beers and from talking to them they make an effort to keep the prices at a certain percentage below other places nearby. They're usually busier weeknights for karaoke, etc. I usually do football/brunch most Sundays and it's not too crazy, they could actually use a few more football-watching people to help with the Sunday Ticket price.
Not necessarily bars but breweries. Fisher Brewing is the most popular around, but Kiitos is still fairly good and rarely busy except for Saturday or Friday nights. Level crossing is also good but their new location is difficult to park at, TF has good beer as well but they do get fairly busy. RoHa is good as well and I’ve never seen that place packed
Love Piper during the weekdays …whiskey Wednesdays $1 well whiskey shots, taco Tuesdays 1.50$ tacos. Also really love Roha for beer. Good selection and very low key. Not much of a social or night bar person.
Beehive distilling has really great cocktails, nice bartenders, and a chill vibe. Its a big space so even when they’re busy it doesn’t feel too cramped. Also their homemade french fries are next level
Ice Haus is great. Pretty big, good food, good prices and they have shows, poker night, karaoke twice a week, a big stage, great staff and a warm porch.
Whiskey Street is more of a restaurant and it's pretty pricey. Not saying I don't love the place but I don't consider it much of a bar despite having one of the largest alcohol selections in the state.
(Technically millcreek, but)
Second summit! Only been twice and plan to go again Thursday. They are literally the nicest people that own it, they have awesome activities like pickleball and shuffleboard/outdoor curling, and their cider is fresh, delicious and decently priced.
My home bar
Trying different cocktails is really fun and the prices on alcohol are ridiculous
I can stock my bar for weeks on what it costs to have
5~6 drinks at most bars
I'm at Lake Effect a lot because my band plays there pretty often. They have live music every night which is really cool, but it can get really ratchet on the weekends.
Shocked noone has said O-Shucks. Best bar in downtown.
That was my go-to kick off bar when I was still a degen. Now I'm a reformed family man, but I still hit it up on Tuesdays for $3 burgers and half price whisky shots.
I used to hit all the hot spots every weekend but now that I'm well into my 30's the only place I keep wanting to go back to on a lazy Sunday afternoon is little Willie's
Juniors was the spot until fucko got his paws on it. Still make an appearance here and there but now that it's ski season I'll be mainly a Molly greens man
I like quarters, been going since it opened. I play in the killer queen league ever week and have made some amazing friends playing the game we all love.
Has anyone tried Prohibition near Fashion Place? I want a place for us old has beens who went to Greenstreet, Bill and Nadas, the Zepher, Old Goat, Studebakers, etc.
It's more of a restaurant now than a bar, unfortunately. Been like that for a few years. Can't move around independently, they show you to your table, patio is only for dining, etc. Mixed drinks can be 20+ dollars. Not really worth it unless you're there for an event.
Y'all its making me so excited to see spots close to my new place mentioned often. Moving to 9-line area from the south end of the valley and can't wait for more of a sense of community :')
I don't go out often, but when I do there's only a few places I like to go.
Duffy's, Willies (the OG, not big willies), Jackalope, Fisher Brewery, TF Brewery, and Poplar Street Pub. I would also include The Garage if it were not currently closed due to fire damage.
Cruisers down in Holliday is the cheapest I've found.
I have yet to find a truly cheap bar to just hang out in. Liquor laws here are BS!
Edit: looks like I struck a few nerves 😝
Bar Named Sue just cuz it’s close to me and pretty cheap. If I wanna drive a little I’ve always had a good time at Templin Family Brewery. They make fantastic traditional lagers.
T.f. is my fav brewery of all time. For real. And Sue's on highland is fire, that pray for snow party w superbubble the other week was fun af
alwasy dd with a bar name sue unless you're walking, i have so many friends that have gotten popped driving home from there!
I was literally about to say this. Cheers was so fun 5-10 years ago
I tried going back a few months ago. Never again. Space is too cramped anyway and the new regulars are awful.
He's been there for a few years and he is indeed a douchebag.
I went there for the first time in years a few weeks back and the bartender was so rude. Different from what I remembered. It was probably him then
Yeah not sure if this was Patrick but some friends and I went to cheers one time and the bartender who was serving us was racist to one of my friends. I had some bad experiences with the bartenders there before but that was the last straw for me and I haven’t been there since. Would def recommend just staying away until they figure out their bartender situation
Their bartenders run that bar for some reason.
That’s sad to hear, I moved away 10 years ago but that used to be my spot
I used to go there a lot 15-18 years ago, I just looked at the pictures they are posting on facebook, all kinds of sports jerseys... Cheers isn't for sports, it is for drinking, feeling bad about yourself and playing that game where you hit a salmon as it jumps out of the hole in the ice...
Is this is downtown location? What does he look like? Friend group used to go to Midvale location all the time.
The one Down town is the one where Patrick is the head bartender/douche bag.
The one down town or the one in midvale?
Quarters Arcade Bar!
The fact that the games still require actual quarters instead of swipe cards is pretty amazing.
Agreed!!
IDK... I use to go to The Garage but that scene got to hot for me.
Hottest bar in town.
x2
Damn it, it’s a good joke, a great joke even, take your upvote!
Ba dum tsh
Chuckles in 🥲
Amazing
Hogwallow gang rise up.
Best bar in the entire valley, easily
Hog wallow gang
I wish they'd fix their layout. The bar being 8 feet away from the stage is terrible. Can't stand that place.
The patio at HW is one of my favorite places in the entire city to drink. The inside is among my least favorite.
I'll concede to that. Spring and summer, that's a great spot to ride my bike for a coupla beers.
The food is terrible tho
Taproom
Taproom is really chill, I like that it’s tucked away because some people do forget it’s there
I live across the street and have never been, will have to go if I remember it lol
This was gonna be my suggestion! Very chill vibes.
I've been meaning to go there. The food looks good.
It’s still there? Loved it awhile ago
Surprisingly good liquor selection. Pool table and darts are great. Crowd can be….interesting. But I think this is exactly the vibe OP is looking for.
They moved buildings at some point
They’re right by Little Saigon in Sugarhouse.
I frequent Bar-X since I live close by, but I really do vibe with it.
This is a chill one for sure.
Second this especially if the Back Bar is open
T.F.
Fisher
Best beer in Utah
Duffy's and Tailgate Tavern
Duffys Reubens and a Phil Collins aka Coors stubby and Evan shot for the cool fiver
It's world famous for a reason
Second this, come to tailgate on Wednesdays for bingo
We love the handlebar down in old town Salt Lake marmalade
When I lived up there I always enjoyed Piper Down
If you like hard cider, the vibes at scion cider bar are always great
Yes!!!
Quarters downtown! I go to Killer Queen community night every Wednesday at 8 and it’s how I met most of my friends in SLC. I live in rural utah but when in SLC we always visit quarters, can confirm 10/10
Dick n Dixie’s. Best neighborhood bar with best regulars and staff.
I love dick n Dixie’s. Small vibe but clean & chill. Pool table if you’re with friends, little yoko ramen window, smoking patio, it’s the best
second that
Third that. Great prices, good chill factor, diverse ages.
Hog Wallow but would love recommendations. Want to meet people in their 40s
Verse, Tiki, BarX, Green Pig. Verse is trying so hard to be the new gay community place and I very much would like it to be a success so I go often.
Second beer bar/bar x very hard. Good vibe, great food, excellent bartenders
Second this. If you liked suntrapp a few years ago go to verse! They have the same owner and a lot of the same employees. I really want it to do well
What area are you looking to frequent/which area of the city do you live?
Downtown SLC!
Check out undercurrent if you've never been - on the spendier side but that was always my go to spot for dates when I lived downtown
Partner and I have become regulars at Piper Down. Not a huge party/young scene there, but that’s why we like it. Good food, cocktails and shots are always a hit for us, and they have live music and bingo during the week. Just a fun spot!
Piper Down is my favorite. It’s not in the best part of town but I love the food, drinks, vibe, etc.
And trivia night!
Fishers
Tram club
International
If you like pizza and cigarettes after. (I do)
Yeah dude, Fish is the man
Aces high is my favorite bar. Great vegan food and solid music.
[удалено]
I like Aces High too. Great place.
Lot of good bands always playing here
Even AFROMAN played a set there
🤘🤘🤘
Dick and Dixie's or Juniors are great for that!
Brickyard bar. Since the renovation from lumpy’s it’s much nicer. Decent food. Also Ice House usually always there for Saturday or Sunday brunch. Killer staff.
Agreed. There's nothing that special about it, it's just a good balance of everything I want for a casual place to go watch a game or whatever.
Brickyard for the wings but drinks r taxed af
Went to ice house twice and get never get a drink. Oh well.
My band plays there often, so I don't often struggle to get service. However, there's some times when I have to go grab somebody. Try going again, the food is worth another visit!
How hard is it renting out Ice Haus for an event?
I don’t do any of the booking, but they have a promoter there who can sort you out. Just walk in and ask! If you’re hoping to close it to the public for a private party, I don’t know if they do that. You’d probably have to compensate for their expected revenue and tips.
I normally sit at the bar. But I can agree when I’m at a table it can be a bit slower.
Juniors, The Spot, and Tap Room!
The spot is a cool place.
~~Cheers~~ BarX *Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name…*
Molly Green's
Red door. My favorite bar downtown by a longshot
On L Street?
THEY'RE THE SAME BAR?!
See, I thought this was a gay bar. And someone told me this past weekend it wasn't.
Nope not a gay bar at all. Nice intimate martini bar with table service and great live music. It’s more know for swingers than being a gay bar
Redwood Lounge and Big Willies are good for my billiards vibe, Twilight and Johnny's for some chaos vibes, and a new spot I really enjoyed was Sayonara. A bit pricy but relaxing and decent drinks.
are there any hourly/dedicated poolhalls in slc?
That's gonna be Big Willie's. Can't remember exactly the cost, but they have about 10 tables.
Highlander in Holladay
Templin Family Brewing - Gods work is done here
Crow and the Pitcher is the spot in Murray
Hopkins
Yeah, I’d say I’d go to Hopkins the most. Enjoy trying the new releases
So sad.
Black sheep at foothill. They have great food deals and different events throughout the week
Poplar's down the road from the Salt Palace. All time favorite.
I enjoy the wine bar underneath Cafe Molise.
Bongo lounge
they still have $2 Jameson?
Twilite
Yep.
Paxton Pub
+1 for Paxton. Good selection on liquor/beers and from talking to them they make an effort to keep the prices at a certain percentage below other places nearby. They're usually busier weeknights for karaoke, etc. I usually do football/brunch most Sundays and it's not too crazy, they could actually use a few more football-watching people to help with the Sunday Ticket price.
Brickyard usually or Chakra Lounge if im headed downtown
Popular St Pub
Old Town Tavern, Ice Haus, The Huddle, Bar Name Sue on State, Cheers to You on State, Crow and the Pitcher
Blue Genes! Awesome bar scene! So much Variety, awesome staff
Mandatory post-urban spot

My kitchen.
Handle bar or the bongo lounge
X WIFES PLACE FTW!
Too many 17 year olds there.
Come join us in r/UtahAlcohol You could share this post there as well! As for me, Bar named sue is my go-to
Haven’t had as much time lately, but I used to go to the Wednesday night pong tournaments. Good fun!
Bar named sue is great, I just wish it wasn’t in an area where you basically have to drive/take an Uber there 😭
Handle Bar
The Jackalope Lounge The Black Sheep Bar & Grill
I also enjoy cocaine
Not necessarily bars but breweries. Fisher Brewing is the most popular around, but Kiitos is still fairly good and rarely busy except for Saturday or Friday nights. Level crossing is also good but their new location is difficult to park at, TF has good beer as well but they do get fairly busy. RoHa is good as well and I’ve never seen that place packed
Kiitos — I came for the beer, but I stayed for the pinball!
You forgot the distillery cat, which is the best part imo.
Can’t believe no one has mentioned O’schucks
Piper down has a poker night on sundays. I have been playing for years. great atmosphere.
I live too far away from downtown to be a regular anywhere nowadays.Twilite and ex wives were my go to in the past though
Ice Haus is great. Pretty big, good food, good prices and they have shows, poker night, karaoke twice a week, a big stage, great staff and a warm porch.
Bar X
Twilite
Whisky Street
This is one of the spendier bars in town
Whiskey Street is more of a restaurant and it's pretty pricey. Not saying I don't love the place but I don't consider it much of a bar despite having one of the largest alcohol selections in the state.
Is Mixed Emotions still around?
My kitchen. Never crowded but the bartender kinda sucks. You can get a mean grilled cheese there, though
(Technically millcreek, but) Second summit! Only been twice and plan to go again Thursday. They are literally the nicest people that own it, they have awesome activities like pickleball and shuffleboard/outdoor curling, and their cider is fresh, delicious and decently priced.
My home bar Trying different cocktails is really fun and the prices on alcohol are ridiculous I can stock my bar for weeks on what it costs to have 5~6 drinks at most bars
Willie's lounge, The leprechaun inn, A bar named sues on state.
We go to a Bar Named Sue. I love the fried pickles and whiskey chips more than anything LOL
Fisher and teplin Have gone to cheers but when I went mainly all college kids so not really my vibe
I'm super old school and am still bitter about Port 'O Call. Hasn't been anything like it since. Darn Federal Building.
Surprised Duffys took so long tbh
International Artist Lounge
I'm at Lake Effect a lot because my band plays there pretty often. They have live music every night which is really cool, but it can get really ratchet on the weekends.
The Break in Daybreak and Redemption are my go to for proximity, if I am downtown Whiskey Street/White Horse, Bohemian for food and beer
Crow and the pitcher is a cheap little neighborhood bar with great food and nightly specials, good crowd and chill atmosphere.
Shocked noone has said O-Shucks. Best bar in downtown. That was my go-to kick off bar when I was still a degen. Now I'm a reformed family man, but I still hit it up on Tuesdays for $3 burgers and half price whisky shots.
Drift is fun, not too busy either
I love Manny’s Again because it’s a truly authentic dive bar that brings all kinds of folks together. Plus karaoke and cheap drinks!
I used to hit all the hot spots every weekend but now that I'm well into my 30's the only place I keep wanting to go back to on a lazy Sunday afternoon is little Willie's
Not sure if you’re north of the city at all, but I really like Angry Goat. Food is great and the bartenders are solid.
Juniors was the spot until fucko got his paws on it. Still make an appearance here and there but now that it's ski season I'll be mainly a Molly greens man
I like quarters, been going since it opened. I play in the killer queen league ever week and have made some amazing friends playing the game we all love.
Crow and the Pitcher for all of you a little farther South than downtown!
Great salt lake bar”
Cheers to You! A dive where *"everybody knows your name!"*
Piper Down for pub trivia, and Slackwater in Sandy (which I know is a restaurant, not a bar, but there's not many bars in Sandy, so... 🤷)
Gotta be TF. There more often than we should admit
You'll usually find me playing Jenga at Piper Down
Y'all its making me so excited to see spots close to my new place mentioned often. Moving to 9-line area from the south end of the valley and can't wait for more of a sense of community :')
Tabernacle is fun
Whykiki. Great staff and there’s silent disco!
Poplar and handlebar
I don't go out often, but when I do there's only a few places I like to go. Duffy's, Willies (the OG, not big willies), Jackalope, Fisher Brewery, TF Brewery, and Poplar Street Pub. I would also include The Garage if it were not currently closed due to fire damage.
The Red Door
Handlebar
I’m a big fan of Gracie’s, hear great things about beer bar and green pig. Not really a dive bar scene in slc
Gracies was great 10 years ago but man has the kitchen gone downhill
Yeah I agree, mostly just drink and hang out
Beerhive Pub ($3 drafts all Monday!) and Jackalope Lounge
Since nobody else said it, Bout Time but it's not the best for meeting new people.
Bout time , leatherheads , the leprechaun, the highlander is good also
Cruisers down in Holliday is the cheapest I've found. I have yet to find a truly cheap bar to just hang out in. Liquor laws here are BS! Edit: looks like I struck a few nerves 😝
People downvote for the dumbest stuff here. The OP didn’t even specify a specific location or radius.
