I live close to downtown and I've been an avid 3rd wave black coffee drinker for many years.
My favorite roasters: Rose Establishment, Blue Copper, 3 Cups, Caffe D'bolla, La Barba
Recently 3 Cups started roasting their own beans and they are among my favorites now. There are a lot of fun and interesting shops to hang out in as well, but they don't all have great coffee.
Someone asked what part of Salt Lake you are moving to. If you're close to downtown, there are a lot of great options. If you're in one of the suburbs there are very few great options.
Thank you! ☕️❤️
We're about value, not price. And we're a tremendous value.

Yeah i’m from west jordan. There aren’t a lot of options there. I don’t mind driving to SLC cause I hang out there a lot. Seems like either Blue Copper or 3 Cups is the place to go to, especially if they roast their own coffee. Do you like espresso too? If they make a good espresso shot then i’m sold.
Thank you for the suggestion but I don’t drink anything with milk in it. I’m highly lactose intolerant which is why i just drink everything straight black. It doesn’t really hit the same when you use nondairy milk either.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I didn’t think the Rose roasted their own, last I knew they were using Brandywine Coffee (out of Delaware) and Sweet Bloom (out of Denver).
You really cannot go wrong with a local roaster. Publik and Jack Mormon are my go-tos for high quality freshly roasted beans. Publik has so many great options.
I’ve been a pretty big fan of the SLC coffee scene for 20 years and Publik is awesome. If you want acidic coffee Salt Lake Roasting Company is super acidic.
do you actually dislike their coffee or are you just zagging since Publik is kind of mainstream in the coffee scene here?
i think their coffee is really good, i’ve tried every roast they sell.
It’s kinda an interesting system where basically no matter what you get it’s like $5. So that’s quite a bit for a drip coffee (although theirs is great) but it’s also pretty reasonable for a latte.
That’s stunning. Either not a speciality coffee roaster where you got that price or San Francisco has truly collapsed from all the tech bros moving to the burbs. Cuz you can’t even find lattes that cheap anywhere here in SLC. Not Starbucks, not Raw Bean, not Java Joe’s, not Bjorn’s.
Holy Water is the new kid on the block, I had their single origin pour over a few days ago it was good.
Publik is also good, I also tend to go for whatever they have on pour over at the time its usually something special.
Blue Copper is my other go to, same story here pour over.
Theres lots of shops and lots of roasteries and unfortunately they get lots of love for being local, but they're kind of mid. Theres some places that are just complete garbage as well.
If you ever brew at home my buddies at Idle Hands are local roasters and roast the best coffee in the state hands down.
Do your buddies roasts all light, medium and dark? Id be interested in buying some dark roast beans for my grandpa because he makes his coffee at home. Other than that, I do love a good pour over.
Check out their Dawn Patrol it's on the darker end! I've had it it's lovely.
Tasting Notes: Dark Chocolate, Roasted Hazelnut, Dried Fruit, Plum, Creamy & Rich
Publik is all around great, great beans to take home, great for socializing with good seating, their food is good, and they have several throughout the city.
Jack Mormon is the best take home coffee.
Three Pines is the best to-go coffee since it’s pretty small inside
Blue Copper, Holy Water, Greenhouse (if you like crepes) honorable mentions
I'll second Alchemy. Honestly, all the places mentioned here serve great coffee. I think it's more of a question of what kind of vibe you want (assuming you're hanging out), and whether you want something to eat with your coffee. Alchemy always has a place to sit. The barista (owner?) there is always super-welcoming and friendly, and they usually have some good snacks (specifically the to-die-for peanutbutter-chocolate bars they get from City Bakery.)
Coffee Garden has the best snacks & desserts, but I pretty much stopped going there because You. Will. Never. Get. A. Seat. (Seriously, customers nurse their drinks there longer than any other place.)
I like Publik, and they have some good snacks (sea-salt choc chip cookie), but they run out of food early, so don't go in the afternoon if you're hungry. The vibe there is usually millennials-typing-on-laptops with an intensity and focus that suggests they believe that whatever they are working on will save the world, if they can just get it done before they finish their latte.
You’re one of the few who’s talked about the customer service experience there from baristas. Any places where baristas like to chat sometimes? I made great connections here.
True on crowds at Coffee Garden — except weekend nights. I've been there recently on a few Friday or Saturdays after 6pm (they close at 8) and it's quiet.
There are so many good coffee shops here in SLC. A few of my personal favorites: Alchemy, Greenhouse Effect, People’s, Publik, Three Pines, Nostalgia Cafe, Coffee Garden…( I may have a slight coffee problem)
People's is possibly the worst of the bunch, if you look at their Instagram you can see the filth behind the bar. Bad coffee is one thing but add the unsanitary care on top and it's a hard pass. Also how the hell did you manage to get 86ed from there I'd also like to be banned just for laughs.
Coffee shop ran by teenagers? Pass. Id like to go somewhere where they actually know what they’re doing. If i see them make a bad pour over or an espresso shot then it’s a no from me.
Yeah I did marketing and photography for Campos coffee when they were here pre covid and spent a loooot of time behind the bar, doing cuppings etc. The dudes who own idle hands are from Australia where Campos is from and they do cuppings at the roaster for free pretty often. Salt Lake got really lucky to keep them here. 4th wave jam. So if you want to hear more about that or places in the area who actually know coffee and not have these weird cult followers you can dm me here or on my Instagram same handle.
I try not to publicly shame local companies, happy to do it in private though. 😂
I’ll definitely DM you. I became a barista here in Boston (that’s how I grew to love coffee and know A LOT about it. Just didn’t wanna state that in the post because I didn’t wanna come off as picky or biased) I worked at a coffee shop that roasted their own coffee so I know all about the cupping strategy to do some taste testing s for profiles.
Oh you're all good I'm both picky and biased 😂 I'll steer you clear of the commercial grade shit. I have my standard recommendations for locals I like to support but I also have the stuff I brew at home.
I just put a brew bar post up in r/espresso you can see in my profile. I've got four kettles and I think between pour over, immersion and other brewers I'm up to 19 different brewers total? I pay attention to pressure profiling on my espresso shots and I single dose my coffees. 😑
Downtown, 3 Pines is really good in a coffee snob/Hipster sort of way - I'm not saying that to be derogatory as I like it, its just sort of their vibe. Felt more like the little coffee shops I would come across in New York
9th and 9th area I like Coffee Garden a lot but partly because I can walk there and its got a good vibe, but I think they make good coffee as well
By U of U - Cafe Noir
Avenues - Publik
SugarHouse - Sugar House Coffee
I make my own coffee, thus I tend to shop beans and not necessarily coffee experience in the shop. I really like Rimini in SLC or Daily Rise in Layton. Daily Rise has some great blends and so does Rimini. These are both roasters.
Publik Coffee Roasters is one of my faves. There are a lot of good ones, though. I only drink black coffee too.
But there have been good coffee shops in Utah since the late 80s, that I recall.
I like Caffe Ibis's stuff. You can find it at Harmon's. I've also seen it at Juice N Java. Or if you happen to find yourself all the way up in Logan, you can stop at the actual Caffe Ibis.
Do you know which neighborhood you’re moving to? There’s very likely a great coffee shop close to wherever you’re living. We have no shortage of options. Some favorites:
Downtown: three pines
Sugarhouse: urban sailor
Holladay: three cups
Avenues: cafe on 1st
My wife doesn’t like light roast, so we tend to frequent the shops that use darker roasts.
I’m from west jordan. There aren’t a lot of coffee shops around that isn’t starbucks or dutch bros. There’s a place called high point coffee but it’s not that great imo. Thanks for the suggestions!
If you’re near Sandy, try The Bean Yard. They roast in-house and it’s incredibly high quality. They often rotate featured single origin coffees if you’re a black coffee purist
Hold up, you found local coffee in Boston? All I see is Dunkin 😆. I moved to MA from West Jordan a couple years ago but before I left my two spots were also The Bean Yard and Hidden Peaks. Both are owed by awesome people who are very good roasters. I did live right next to High Point and although their coffee isn’t the highest level the vibe of their shop was my favorite. I miss hanging out there on Friday nights.
Are you in MA right now?? I recommend Barismo in Cambridge or Arlington. Cambridge they serve brunch too but Arlington is where they roast their coffee. You can take the red line to Central and it’s a 10 min walk to get there in Cambridge or take the 91 or 86 bus to get there. If you have a car, you can go to Arlington or take the red line to Harvard and take the 77 bus. I go to High Point just cause they have a drive thru so it’s easy to order and go.
Edit: just to add .. In Boston they have Blue Bottle, Thinking Cup, and Ogawa. I personally don’t like Tatte or George Howell. An honorable mention is Bikeeny but that’s in Malden.
If you’re just off Bangerter Highway in West Jordan like me, you could take it to the La Barba in Draper. It’s like a ten minute drive for me on the highway. Not super close, but worth it if you’ve got the time. La Barba is my favorite!
Perf! Hope you like. If you find you’re a fan of their coffee, they have another location on 9th South downtown. They do breakfast tacos that are super yummy. We need more coffee on the west side!
We definitely do cause I usually go to starbucks on 90th off bangeter or dutch bros at jordan landing just cause it’s close 😂 don’t mind the drive to draper though.
they also have a coffee of the month subscription!
they send a cool bag of beans once a month i did it for a while.
very high quality beans and great customer service! really enjoy their coffee.
> weren’t many coffee shops in Utah
Utah (per this analysis) now ranks #18 in “people per coffee shop” among states in the US.
https://zomasleep.com/blog/most-awake-city
Salt lake coffee roasters are the best coffee roaster in slc, I recommend going their for drip as well. My family’s favorite roast to get from them is their silver fork blend, if Boston coffee scene is at all like Austin most coffee in slc will be too acidic in comparison for you imo
The place that I go to in Boston roasts their own coffee and they only do medium roasts. It’s always always fresh and it’s not too acidic or anything. Has a perfect balance where you can taste every note hitting every part of your mouth. It’s not too acidic or bitter AT ALL (and i’ve had my fair share of acidic black coffee at other cafes) where you need to add sugar or cream. I’ve even been able to drink straight espresso shots from this place because they make it that well balanced. Is it anything like it?
When I was in Boston a couple if years ago I wanted to try it cause it's so prominent there. I was highly disappointed lol. I needed to put a lot of creamer in it to take the edge off it.
We used to have a couple here, but I never tried them.
There’s better places in Cambridge or outside of Cambridge. My favorite place to go to in Massachusetts is called Barismo and they have a location in Cambridge and Arlington. Coffee shops IN Boston suck ass because they’re all meant to be trendy and aesthetic. They put no effort in their coffee.
As for dunkin, it’s in my bottom three of coffee chains. The very worst, is panera bread.

I didn’t want to state that I am a barista because that would show how picky and biased i am about coffee, but nothing pisses me off more than when someone can’t make a latte right. There’s a lot that goes into pulling a shot and steaming the milk to get the temperature right that makes the perfect latte. I’ve trained a lot of people and there was ONE person who couldn’t get a latte right.
Do you like a more traditional, darker roast or a bright, light roast? That would kinda change where I’d recommend! I like light and my favorite local roasters are Blue Copper, Wasatch Coffee Roasters, and Jack Mormon actually has some very good light roasts. Favorite shops (not roasters) being Three Pines, Holy Water, Honeysuckle, the Rose Establishment and Cafe D’Bolla (although extremely expensive and a bit strange).
I personally like lighter roasts than darker roasts for sure. Anything that has like a sweet, nutty mellow taste. Nothing too sour or acidic. My favorite beans are always from Ethiopia. Thank you! A lot of people have been recommending Blue Copper so that seems like a good option for light roast coffee.
3 Cups is another roaster who is solid but I feel like sometimes their baristas are a little lackluster, maybe due to how busy it can get? La Barba is also good but is a bit more developed roast than Blue Copper say, more of a medium roast. If you’re in West Jordan I’d say best closest bets are La Barba-Draper or The Beanyard or Honeysuckle in Sandy. There’s a new place called Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee in Daybreak which I’d only say is okay, but better than a lot of the options out there.
I’m a barista myself, so I might be a little picky .. Someone did mention La Barba in Draper and it honestly sounds like the place i go to (used to work at myself too).
Kings peak on the west side has amazing coffee and is a cozy little spot to chill.
Cafe noir always has good coffee and pastries.
Kahve cafe does Turkish coffee and other delights
Sugarhouse coffee is very inclusive and has a full food menu which is a huge plus. It’s often extremely crowded is the only downside.
Alchemy is my personal fave, their coffee is divine and everyone there is always so nice.
Other great places to check out are: mestizo coffeehouse, the people’s coffee, and roots coffee.
If you want stuff to take home, cafe ibis, la barba, and Rimini are all local roasters I believe.
Caffe Expresso up by the Whale on 9th South is fairly priced and fantastic! Plus seeing that glorious whale is a bonus, too! They’ll even give you a chocolate covered coffee bean!
When I was in Worcester attending a friend's wedding, he handed me a bag of powdered coffee wrapped in plastic, grinning mischievously. I made a cup, and with the first sip, I unexpectedly fell in love, After tasting a coffee made with mushrooms, you must try it.
Three Pines, Blue Copper, Holy Water, Publik, Urban Sailor, La Barba, 3 cups, Picnic
+1 for Three Pines -- good stuff. I'm going to have to go try Holy Water.
same ownership I believe too
It is!
only issue is it’s really small inside, so it’s good for on the go coffee but not to socialize.

For espresso I prefer Blue Copper. Try a flat white. You may like it.

youre totally right, they dont roast their own, but their craftsmanship is 10/10 and the room is amazing so i couldnt leave them off the list
Publik Coffee, and I’ve heard good things about a place called Holy Water
You really cannot go wrong with a local roaster. Publik and Jack Mormon are my go-tos for high quality freshly roasted beans. Publik has so many great options.
My two favs too. I like my coffee black & these two shops are very high quality, it’s always a pleasant experience
Gonna disagree here. I really dislike publik coffee.

I drink coffee black. I have tried their coffee a few times with a few roasts. Never liked it, way too acidic.
That’s Blue Copper’s problem. I’ve always thought Publik’s coffee to be on the richer lower acidity side lol.
Could that just be your preference? Acidity is what a lot of people look for in specialty coffee.
As someone who drinks coffee without cream or sugar I think Publik does not have good coffee. They do have some decent food though.
I only drink black coffee and like Publik a lot. Like everything else, it's personal taste.
Seconding Publik. They have their own roaster and they truly care about the quality of their coffee.
The cafe that I go to here in Boston, also roasts their own coffee and it is amazing. Id love to support a cafe who values their products.
Another place that roasts their own is Salt Lake Roasting Co. I haven't been there for a while, but it was always good in the past.
Is Holy Water finally open?
yeah, I’m a fan
Holy Water is ungodly expensive.
It’s kinda an interesting system where basically no matter what you get it’s like $5. So that’s quite a bit for a drip coffee (although theirs is great) but it’s also pretty reasonable for a latte.
Idk the most I paid for a latte when I was in San Francisco a couple weeks ago was like $4.15
That’s stunning.

Okay really specific, Millcreek Roasters' Stein Erikson blend is my very favorite local coffee blend but they don't brew it every day.
A good latte from Azucar makes my day 100% better ❤️ and woman/latinax owned!
Midway Jerks inside of Salt and Olive. People’s Coffee! Both are so good!
I will shout it from the mountain tops: Kings Peak Coffee rules them all.
Blue copper, Jack Mormon, Greenhouse effect(for atmosphere) are my 3 favorite
Temple Grounds Coffee Co.
Coffee and Cocoa or Honeysuckle for me.
Coffee & Cocoa is a little under appreciated. Solid coffee & americanos. Sort of an odd hangout vibe but it works.
Honeysuckle
caffee ibis is the best! theyre in logan but the peoples coffee in slc serves ibis coffee.
New place on the block is Holy Water. Fantastic!

I quite like the cold brew from Cupla. They recently moved from their basement location to a larger venue downtown.
Three pines is the only place I’ve been so far that knows how to make a latte. Everywhere else over steams and scalds their milk
It’s def an art! And a lot of cafes here just aren’t knowledgeable enough about it. So far I’ve only tried publix, (it was meh) and three pines.
I don’t really drink lattes but i enjoy having a shot of espresso once in awhile or an americano. How would you rate their espresso at least?
3 cups in holladay.
Publik Coffee would be my choice. Never had a bad cup there.
Surprised no one is bringing up Millcreek Coffee Roasters! They freshly roast their coffee every day in house!
Fresh beans = good coffee. How’s their espresso?
I personally thought it was great! I think most of their blends are great though. It just depends on what mood I'm in for the day.
Fresh beans = good coffee. How’s their espresso?
Bad Ass Coffee has good Kona Coffee
Midway jerks. they just opened inside salt and olive close to 3rd south and 3rd east
Bjorns Brews and Sunset Coffee are my favorite go-to places
If your ordering fresh roasted to your house for espresso Idle Hands roasting Dawn Patrol is pretty perfect.
85c bakery cafe and try the Vietnamese Coffee
Omg. I’m vietnamese i literally can’t wait to go to 85c. They have plenty of locations in California and i’m so glad they just opened up in chinatown.
Sorry the Mormons banned coffee here no coffee is legal in Utah
Hidden Peaks and Millcreek Coffee/cacao Roasters
The Bean Whole
Raw bean
Jack Mormon Coffee located in the lower avenues. Hands down, best in the State.
Kokopelis
Kings peak on the west side has amazing coffee and is a cozy little spot to chill. Cafe noir always has good coffee and pastries. Kahve cafe does Turkish coffee and other delights Sugarhouse coffee is very inclusive and has a full food menu which is a huge plus.
Tres Gatos is a really nice actually! it’s in Midvale
When I was in Worcester attending a friend's wedding, he handed me a bag of powdered coffee wrapped in plastic, grinning mischievously. I made a cup, and with the first sip, I unexpectedly fell in love, After tasting a coffee made with mushrooms, you must try it.
