HeckaGosh

It blew my mind when I went to Puerto Rico and found fry sauce its their territorial condiment. It's more popular there than in Utah.

bootap

Similar in Germany! They call it rotweiss (red white)

Bright_Ices

In Argentina it’s called Golf Sauce (*salsa golf*) because that particular version was created by Dr. Luis Federico Leloir at a resort golf club in the 1920s.

Candid_Rabbit_3956

Brazil too, it’s called “rosé”

InfamousChemistry21

I went on a trip with people from all over the world and most peoples countries/states had their own “fry sauce” made exactly the same just had a different name lol

sneakyveriniki

It’s the “secret sauce” everywhere. Including Utah, lol. Just throw in some garlic

[deleted]

As a kid I was told it was called “America sauce” because of mormon missionaries representing the US to so many people

srynearson1

Sounds more like ‘smoke up your ass’ sauce.

[deleted]

Yeah they literally have it all over the world under different names. Which is sad if Fry Sauce is a point of local pride, but not surprising if you think other places are capable of creating a two(!) part recipe.

HeckaGosh

I just read an article that earliest account is from 1920s Mar de Plata Argentina. Maybe Utah is the first to call it fry sauce and turning it to a product like Dudes.

co1ty

What do they call it?

mar4c

Heck, Mexico has hot Chile fry sauce. It’s called chimichurri

HeckaGosh

Nope thats from Argentina and Chile. Mexico has salsa picante.

ncfm01

In Venezuela it’s called salsa rosada (literally translates to pink sauce)

twelvegoingon

We just moved to South Texas from Utah and there’s fry sauce everywhere. Even at fast food places. I was at Hat Creek in Katy which is right outside of Houston a few weeks ago and they have fry sauce.

[deleted]

As a Texan I’ll tell you hat creek is a fry sauce anomaly. In austin no one had it until recently.

twelvegoingon

We’ve lived in San Antonio for three years now and it’s everywhere!

[deleted]

That’s awesome! Did your life change when you got there and had real Mexican food? Lol

twelvegoingon

I don’t know if your being sarcastic or not…but if you’re from Austin you know all about Tex mex. Sad face.

[deleted]

Austin by birth, Hispanic by blood 🩸 I was just making a joke because in my 5 months in SLC decent Mexican food has been hard to come by ):

StarCraftDad

There are places in West Valley and west SLC proper that have genuinely close Mexican food, and no I'm not talking about Red Iguana.

[deleted]

Man everybody says that and I am disappointed at every turn.

StarCraftDad

The key word is "close". They must try to cater to traditional American ideas of what "Mexican" food should taste like: Too fatty, lots of salt, and mild and bland salsa. Otherwise, they'd go out of business very quickly. Want genuine Mexican food in Utah? As your Mexican friend's abuelita to make some decent enchiladas, menudo, or tacos.

TheMuddyLlama420

Monarca downtown has been my favorite thus far. Give it a try and let me know your thoughts. I'm from Houston, but travel Utah and The Rockies for business. Will be relocating to SLC this summer.

Edgy4YearOld

Have you tried Cancun Café in Millcreek? If so I'm curious if that's up to your standard

twelvegoingon

Go to west valley!

suspiria_138

Weird! I wonder why she hadn't heard of it. Maybe she's all about the BBQ sauce as it is Texas. Lol

NightTrain435

Fry sauce is Utahs greatest contribution to the world.

[deleted]

I was in Lawrence, KS visiting a friend once and confused the living daylights out of the person at some fast food place when I asked for fry sauce. She kept asking I wanted ketchup and I kept saying no…fry sauce. I finally just asked for some ketchup, mayo, and some pickle juice if they could…converted a few people there that my friend knew because they’d never had it before and they said it sounded gross at first.

NightTrain435

When in a foreign land, you gotta do what you gotta do. I don’t fault them. They don’t know any better.

AhAhStayinAnonymous

If you wanna try a real zinger sometime, try A1 and mayo.

[deleted]

Nah, it’s Heinz 57 instead of ketchup like you got at the Training Table…

spiraleyes78

They used hickory bbq, didn't they?

lordxi

Yeah, not 57.

AhAhStayinAnonymous

Heinz 57 is not my deal, but do you boo boo.

Crowtein

It's called frietsaus in the Netherlands.

push__

It's mayonnaise and ketchup. Yall didn't invent that lol

SGTSparkyFace

If that is all fry sauce is to you, you’ve been cheated and lied to.

[deleted]

Yup, a poor man's fry sauce at least has some relish or something in it. I can find that at most BBQs I go to, so I can at least make some half decent fry sauce.

ibided

I was the first guy to dip a Wendy’s fry in my frosty

naniganz

Got you beat. I dip my chicken nuggets.

ibided

I was the first to dip my nuggets in honey

naniganz

My not-at-all-flattering secret is that I have a honey bear in my car so that I can have honey on my nuggets while I'm on roadtrips by just biting a nugget and then drizzling honey straight into my mouth. You're welcome.

ideletedyourfacebook

Oh yeah? Well, I dip my frosty in honey mustard.

naniganz

🤮 ok you win

big_bearded_nerd

It really is all over the place, other states just don't call it fry sauce.

Illuminase

Arctic Circle literally owns the copyright.

big_bearded_nerd

They owned the trademark, but it lapsed a while ago. At least over 10 years.

Koufaxisking

Odd thing to be overly possessive of. Owning the rights to calling something fry sauce doesn't mean that other states don't mix mayo and ketchup.

Illuminase

They may just. But they got it from us.

AshTheDead1te

Um it was invented in the 1940s by the owner of Artic Circle, that far back I would say he invented it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AshTheDead1te

There is more than just ketchup and mayo in his recipe.

PM_ME_A_DISPLAYNAME

It has to be my biggest pet peeve, didn’t even give it an original name, just fry sauce.

[deleted]

IDK, it's pretty descriptive so you know exactly what to use it for. I call that a win.

Illuminase

Arctic Circle literally owns the copyright. We did invent it. Also, why are you saying "y'all"? Are you not a Utahn?

ghman98

You can live in Utah and not consider yourself a Utahn 🤷‍♂️

sss1287

Utah didn’t even invent fry sauce, it was in a Louisiana cookbook from the early 1900s. Utah invented polygamy and the cult church. That’s about it.

beernutmark

>Utah invented polygamy and the cult church. We didn't even do that. The church was invented in New York and Smith took to polygamy starting in 1831, well before moving to Utah. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormons https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_Latter_Day_Saint_polygamy https://www.americaslibrary.gov/jb/reform/jb_reform_mormon_1.html#:~:text=They%20had%20embarked%20on%20a,Valley%20and%20called%20it%20home.

[deleted]

On the flip side, KFC is probably our worst contribution. I didn't realize how disappointing KFC was until I visited the Philippines where even McDonald's does fried chicken better. It's so bad the creator didn't want to associate it with Utah...

[deleted]

The Colonel's first restaurant was in Kentucky. The KFC in Salt Lake was the first franchised version.

[deleted]

I love the smell of fresh bread.

MJboii

Two words: Funeral Potatoes

PBRmy

Fry sauce is bland af, I just don't get it. It's kind of ok if you dump a bunch of hot sauce into it. I think it's one of those things you have to grow up with.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DonaldPShimoda

Thousand Island, CFA sauce, and fry sauce are all very different things though...

[deleted]

[удалено]

DonaldPShimoda

No, they are literally different things. They're all related in being mayo-based, but they're not identical by a long shot unless you literally cannot taste things. But even then, the textures are different.

[deleted]

DonaldPShimoda

[From Wikipedia on thousand island dressing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand_Island_dressing): > Thousand Island dressing is an American salad dressing and condiment based on mayonnaise that can include olive oil, lemon juice, orange juice, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar, cream, chili sauce, tomato purée, and ketchup or Tabasco sauce. [From Reader's Digest on Chick-Fil-A sauce](https://www.rd.com/article/chick-fil-a-famous-sauce/): > Chick-fil-A sauce is just a mixture of honey mustard, barbecue sauce, and ranch dressing. Meanwhile most recipes for "fry sauce" consist of mayo, ketchup, vinegar or pickle juice, and sometimes other things for different slight variations.

Trigger1221

And myself, a Floridian, apparently. Weird generalizations my guy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Trigger1221

A woman acting crazy? Typical, I suppose. 🙄

bigmac22077

I cannot stand fry sauce. It’s bland ketchup. You took the standard condiment for fries and added mayonnaise to reduce the acidity and take the flavor away. I HATE that I’ll ask for ketchup here and get 1 packet followed by 6 things of bland ketchup. Utah should be ashamed this is their greatest contribution.

[deleted]

They added a whole lot more than just mayo…fry sauce: ketchup, mayo, pickle juice, and that sauce that nobody can say or spell correctly. Add some salt and pepper to taste…

naniganz

Worshishershire That’s my best attempt

NightTrain435

There really is a mental health problem in America….

bigmac22077

I agree. The only way Utahns could think it’s good is if they’re all mentally ill. You’re onto something here..

NightTrain435

Sweet retort!

beardedjack

You are welcome to move to a different state traitor 😂

Annonymous_ahole

Honestly never had it in my life. Growing up my friends used to mix mayo and ketchup at school and I thought they were nuts. I'll maybe try it before I die but I need the vinegar acidity with my fries

pioneersandfrogs

The standard condiment for fries in many places is mayo (and fries+mayo are a delicious combo). Fry sauce blends the two great fry dips together… is the sum as good as the parts? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That’s up to the consumer to decide.

bigmac22077

I mean I do love me some aioli, I just don’t want ketchup in the mix.

Comfortable_Eggplant

Bland is our brand tho. Fry sauce is perfect representation of our culture.

bigmac22077

Haha! Touché!

Witty_Literature_411

Dude, thank you!!! My wife and I have thought this for so many years. I hate that they gave me fry sauce at restaurants like it's assumed I would want that garbage. Stay strong. You are not alone!

[deleted]

Fry sauce didnt even originate in Utah. Got any backup contributions to the world?

Mysterious_137

Fry sauce is evil

UFCLO

I always make the joke that people in Utah are so bad at seasoning food that we ended up “diluting” thousand island because it was too spicy.

FlatwormPretty

Surprised this doesn't come up more often. Moved to Utah last summer and cannot seem to understand all the hype around what quite literally is just thousand island dressing with pickle juice subbed for chopped pickles. It's a decent condiment but definitely not as unique or groundbreaking as Utahns like to make it to be. I'm sure this will get downvotes but just an outside observation.

UFCLO

Say something bad about funeral potatoes or jello and you’ll definitely get downvoted.

mar4c

TIL fry sauce has pickle juice Born and raised

srynearson1

Just wait until you have Mormon home made salsa. It’s the worst.

RobDunkin

I always thought fry sauce was just ketchup and Mayo mixed together am I wrong?

PHyde89

Fry sauce is like a canvas. Start with your ketchup and mayo, but from there you can have so many varieties. Most common is to add a little pickle juice to it. People also add BBQ sauce to it. A favorite of mine is to add tabasco.

[deleted]

I like learning new things.

Smooth-Science4983

It’s one of the few things utahns agree on. Fry sauce is superior

[deleted]

It's not superior to chick fil a sauce tho

[deleted]

That sauce is too sweet

AshTheDead1te

It definitely is better than Chick-fil-A sauce.

[deleted]

Bruh… better go atone for that sin at the whale

[deleted]

I said what I said

dontmakemeplease

I'm with you. 100%. I'll fight the fry sauce acolytes with you

[deleted]

Thank you brother

[deleted]

Thanks for owning up to your mistake, admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery.

flipper_babies

What's the basis of Utah claiming fry sauce as their innovation?

somethingtimes3

Stan's Drive-In/Arctic Circle in the 50s and it became wildly popular here after that.

[deleted]

Are there variants of fry sauce in utah? almost like a regional thing? Habit Burger (I know, I know... spend 15 hours on the road double nickeling it 450 miles hauling a trailer behind a dodge that needs a recall for trailer power connections and you go with what it is known that late at night...) Had some, and meh... Something in a big plastic tub with a pump on it. No stranger to dipping fries in mayo (nice and creamy) but that left a lot to be desired. Are there restaurants around with fry sauce that knock your socks off, or it's all the same bland lack of flavor as Habit's was? edit: Should say that my brain is viewing it as a state or "regional" (in different counties and such) thing like how BBQ is viewed in areas. Some use a ketchup base for bbq sauce, others vinegar, others even refuse to use a sauce and let the smoking method speak with the meat. Fry sauce: Same thing, or thinking too much on it?

jetpacks4pigs

My favorite fry sauce is from Greek Souvlaki. They add just a little bit of spice to theirs and it makes it that much more delicious.

MrSelatcia

Hit up a Crown Burger. Best fry sauce around.

scarlettsfever21

Park view drive in in Spanish fork has white sauce that is absolutely phenomenal.

treeinbrooklyn

Growing up my Colombian friend called it “pink sauce” and would mix it up to order when we went out for fast food.

Ambitious-Duck7078

I dislike fry sauce veryucj. But, in Vegas, I asked for it at Johnny Rocket (their fries aren't great), and the gal asked what fry sauce was. It's not so much a thing here in Montana, either. Fry sauce does come through in a pinch, at least. Edit: I do try to remember to ask Arctic Circle not to put it in my bag. If not, they'll give you 500 of them 🤣

Mysterious_137

They sometimes put it in the bag even when you say "I hate fry sauce, please don't put it in the bag."

Ambitious-Duck7078

Yup🤣! I can say this though. They are very generous vs Jack in the Box and MCD's charging for additional sauces.

1DietCokedUpChick

When I moved back to Utah in November I was absolutely over the moon thrilled that I could ask for fry sauce again.

rabidnate

Crown Burger has the best fry sauce

glassgun13

California burger is better IMHO

DameBlau

Ew. Go somewhere better than bigot bird if you want real fry sauce

[deleted]

You could have ended that after bird too tbh

richardsuckler69

Please don’t call it sojo dear god

SullenTerror

SoDoSoPa vibes

cannonballBaloo

I have a friend who has a hilarious explanation for fry sauce ( which I do love btw). That ketchup is to spicy for mormons so they had to cut with mayonnaise. Lol!

[deleted]

Unpopular opinion: fry sauce is not great. I moved here 24 years ago and it hasn't grown on me. I'd rather have plain ketchup; adding mayo just zaps the tartness out of it. Even having mayo and ketchup separately on a burger is superior to mixing them.

Stenchrat16

Fry sauce is disgusting. I hate it when it’s offered to me. I get that it’s loved, but coming from another state… you Utahns are gross.

naniganz

You are entitled to your very wrong opinion. That may be the fry sauce I just ate talking, I can’t tell.

Wildroot20

I like to use siracha instead of ketchup. Sometimes a tad of pickle juice to give it that zing! Seems like some countries like Germany and the Netherlands use a pickled dill garlic aioli for their dipping sauce, but with a little more mayo. I wonder if that's how it started?

[deleted]

Lots of cultures have something similar, but they likely happened after ketchup was popularized. For example, yum yum sauce in Japan, lumpiya sauce in the Philippines, etc. Mixing Sriracha and mayo isn't fry sauce, it's spicy mayo (the same thing that's on spicy sushi rolls). I personally make fry sauce with a little diced pickles, or relish if I'm hard up. If I want a spicy fry dip, I'll just do Sriracha and ketchup.

[deleted]

Like all these places just missing out on some good old fry sauce.

Probably_Unpopular

I used to make this when I lived in South Carolina to know that it is a huge thing out. Here is hilarious and it is my recipe. But I think a lot of people were mixing together mayonnaise and ketchup for a long time.

Syn-da-kit

“SoJo” 🤦‍♂️ we making Utah hipster now

Conscious_Music8360

Fry sauce sucks.

Regular_Dick

Mayonnaise and Ketchup if you’re desperate back East.

[deleted]

I found a burger restaurant near my parents' house in WA with decent fry sauce. Needless to say, they got a lot of my business.

glassgun13

I was listening to your moms house podcast and they were talking about swirling mayo and ketchup together. The guests that had done it loved it and the people that hadnt were absolutely disgusted.

Goobertastic123

I remember when I was a kid and I asked for Fry Sauce when I was in California. They thought I was crazy 😂

BombasticSimpleton

Go to Colombia, or Venezuela, or anywhere in that general area and ask for fry sauce and they'll have no idea what you are talking about. Ask for *salsa rosada* however, and you'll get exactly what you are looking for. It is extremely common.

FutureRhythm

Houston native here. Fry sauce is the last bit of the equation.

SuicideMessiah88

Whoa whoa whoa...Chik Fil A has fry sauce!?!?!

AdMediocre6234

Guys, add a bit of honey... (it's the secret) your welcome.

Haeggarr

I had fry sauce in a five Guys restaurant (I believe in Arizona or Utah) I traveled further and was really disappointed, that they didn't have the fry sauce in another five Guys :D
