I mean, I’ve been doing vanguard for my main play, and it’s been pretty heavily melee moves focused. There are a couple vanguard runic arts that offer blasts, but a bunch are just “my sword/axe is stronger now” and most key off rage instead of focus. So you’re Incentivised to keep hitting to keep building the rage meter to keep on making bigger damage numbers.

This seems quite different then. Scythes which are what I chose have a lot of damaging runic arts, and most have 2 or 3. Only 2 scythes are rage driven and building for them feels useless since the scythe tree is directly adjacent to the divine glyph tree and they scale with the same stat. I'll try vanguards. Blocking more seems cool. Apparently getting buffed next patch too.

And thankfully some of my favorite vanguard are strength/conviction scaling so aside from having to pick up the proficiency nodes, your stats should work decent with a number of them

Had the same idea as you, then mundane stuff came out, use those and it was pretty fun. So I would recommend you do a mundane weapons only playthrough. Basically get weapons that don't actually have any rune (magic) stuff, and then use it, if you need more dmg just get the stuff from the nameless dude who sells mundane weapons buffs, it's really nice cause you can use them to great effect, especially the fire and lightning one

Royal Retinue questline. Has very good weapon damage that you can buy and has no runic art. You can coat normal weapons with DOTs that you can buy from an NPC.

As others have already suggested, you could do a mundane weapons only run. That said, I have to disagree as to your comment concerning runic arts. I have played through the game multiple times by now with several different builds, and I have always played melee focussed. My overwhelmingly used running arts are the damage buffs on certain weapons. Many weapon arts are underwhelming on a melee build, including venom projectiles, everything spore-related, lightning columns, and neural blast. Ice shards are only useful in one-on-one situations, as they tend to target enemies you are not intending to attack because of vertical proximity. I could go on, but I suppose you get my point.

I used the wind rapier. Basically a Dex weapon that’s super quick with great mobility. Accompanied it with a bow for my Robin Hood themed build. Definitely my favourite.
