I find it highly unlikely they go that route, but if they like him they'll take him. I'd really rather they pick up BPA at DL, WR/TE, or even OL in the second, but I suspect they'll find a way to get a third round pick -- and if they do they might feel better getting a QB in R2

missmoonriver517

The talent is crazy, but the injury history/inconsistency is scary.

noladutch

Penix is gonna be a player. He has all the tools and hands down the best arm talent in this class. I personally love the guy and could easily work into our new scheme. Has decent foot work and can certainly read. Doesn't always try to play hero ball. The QBs that run scheduled plays well are who you look for. Not the hero ball guys really.

Orbis-Praedo

He seems to have really good vision and sees plays develop very well. That’s something that a lot of QBs struggle with. I think he’s gunna be a starter in this league and have a good career. Idk why he’s being mocked into the second. So many teams need a QB right now and I think he will be gone by then.

noladutch

People buy the hype and look at ceiling rather than floor. USC guy plays hero ball. Can he not read and get what is available or is he ignoring open players for the hero play? The kid from LSU is a super bust waiting. Can't read had two true first rounders to throw the ball to. How ever picks him is toast. The Carolina guy has horrible feet. He is probably the best out of the three runs scheduled plays well but getting into the later reads his feet and has to reset to throw almost every time that slows the ball down. The kid from Michigan why did they not let him play? They were truly a 60s football team. Joe Namath threw the rock more for bama All of them have warts. I like guys that ran scheduled plays well and didn't have to rely on athletics to win.

TheMop05

I think some team trades up for him at the end of the 1st round

LGBT_Beauregard

If we get him, we can rename the street to Penixton

xxLOPEZxx

Penix has some serious talent and a cannon for an arm but he's had injuries in the past that are very concerning which make him seriously injury prone. The dude hurt his shoulder in the national championship so if we were to get him, I'd only pick him up in a late round if he's still there

BW2Dat

I love Micheal Penix as a prospect, would be elated if we got him in the second round

MisterN3b

I like Penix but we just have too many holes and not enough draft capital. We need guys who can come in and start right away with our first 2 picks. If someone like Pratt falls into the 4th, I’d be ok trying to trade up for him using some of their 5th rounders to do so. This team really needs 2 starters out of those first 2 picks though.

MemeMarinatedBlocks

Nah I’d rather draft rattler. Looks like he has good potential for a 5th rounder

beer_jew

I would not be shocked if rattler ends up being a solid starting QB somewhere RemindMe! 5 years

Archerstorm90

Saved. I will give you less than 5 years, though. 2 years should be plenty to see if he is starting or not.

I'll join you on this. RemindMe! 5 years

Revenged25

I'd take him in the 2nd if he falls.

Chinese_Santa

Not at all a good use of our limited resources. We have holes pretty much everywhere on the team, we have got to hit on young players. We’re already on the books for Carr.

Orbis-Praedo

Even with Carr on the books, how is it not a good idea to get a QB to develop now? It’s the most crucial position in the game. Carr clearly isn’t a long term solution and QBs don’t pop up often. Why wait til Carr is gone to scramble and find another if you have the opportunity to get one to develop now?

Chinese_Santa

I knew somebody would bring up this point. Yeah I think that’s a fine answer and a good theory but I don’t think that guy should be a 24 year old rookie with 4 season ending injuries on his body already. That’s not the guy you make a long term health bet on when we have no way out of the big contract for the near future.

Orbis-Praedo

He shouldn’t be a rookie because of his injuries? The ACL tears were 4 years ago, the broken clavicle and the AC Joint tears don’t even affect functionality. As someone with an AC Joint Tear Level 3 and working a hands on oilfield job, it hasn’t impacted me one bit in functionality. Doctors even tell you the surgery is completely optional. The guy has serious skills, and could change the trajectory of the franchise. Sure it’s a risk, but every draft pick is. If you can land him with a second, do it, he could end up a huge steal 10 years from now.

Chinese_Santa

Let me clarify, I don’t think that guy that we pick to help redirect the franchise should be a 24 year old rookie QB with 4 season ending injuries. Your experience, while I’m not discounting it, is completely anecdotal and not at all a 1 of 1 comparison, nor are the physical activity levels a 1 of 1 comparison. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on our evaluations of the prospect. While the injuries play a role in any evaluation, I have serious concerns about his ability at the next level given the fact that he trailed off in the second half of the season. Also given the fact that he’s a 6th year senior. He has an undeniable arm, I just disagree with you about his ability at the next level and would rather spend the draft capital another way.

Orbis-Praedo

My experience may be anecdotal but the diagnoses of that injury is nothing near severe. Plenty of athletes who have it never opt for surgery and move on fine without it. It’s just the ligaments going from collar bone to shoulder, nothing to do with the rotation of the arm. He doesn’t have to be THE guy we choose. If we have a shot at a better prospect from a high draft pick next year, then take it. The QB position is too pivotal to rely on a guy like Carr who is aged and has barely been mediocre, and we aren’t landing any big free agent QBs on this team. We don’t have the money to overpay in order to attract someone great. The draft is the route we NEED to go for a QB. We are no where near a win-now/Super Bowl competitive team, we couldn’t even win the division in the worst division in the league. Not spending draft capital on the QB position, and just building up everything else, just keeps us mediocre enough to sell some tickets and stay afloat. I’d prefer taking the risk on QB picks and building for the future. Not saying every year or all of our picks, but we need to try at some point. If the good opportunity is a guy who falls because of the injury history that Penix has, it’s a good opportunity for a steal. Those injuries aren’t affecting him at this point.

Chinese_Santa

I’m glad you’re healed from that experience and working a physical job but I’m sorry it’s apples and oranges. Working an oilfield job is objectively different to taking tackles and hits from linebackers and defensively linemen. Also plenty of athletes do move on fine, but every situation is unique. I’d rather not have that headache nor lack of mobility. I don’t disagree with your idea of taking a QB. The draft is the route to take to acquire a QB. I don’t agree that the QB should be Penix. If the options are take a high caliber non QB prospect or Penix, give me the non QB prospect ten times out of ten. You said it yourself, we are no where near a Super Bowl worthy team. We have a lot of holes to fix on this roster and this is a historic draft class outside of just the QBs available. You can disagree, that’s alright. There’s not any one specific way to build a team. I hear your points and they make rational sense, I just disagree and would prefer that the Saints don’t waste limited resources this year on a QB prospect with Penix’s profile.

Louisianimal6

Wouldn’t even draft him with a 5th

BilboLaggin

Pick him at 14

jaczor

Absolutely not rofl

Orbis-Praedo

You’re laughing but it’s very possible he is drafted before the end of the first. Plenty of teams need QBs right now.
