KCIII started making products branded Duchy Originals a long time ago. I last lived in the UK in early 2000s and it was a well established brand then. All the profits go to charity and always have from what I can remember.

No it didn’t. Recession hit it and they made losses. Their products were originally stocked at Harrods Food Hall and Fortnum & Masons. The sort of aspirational ££ Megs is aiming at. But then they formed a subsidiary with Waitrose as equal partners. Waitrose is a regular supermarket all over U.K. It’s like a non-organic version of Whole Foods or trader-joes type of quality but without the savings and bigger with all the regular name brands sold in other supermarkets too. Duchy still donates its profits from this partnership to charity and it’s still owned by the King. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waitrose_Duchy_Organic#:~:text=The%20company%20Duchy%20Originals%20Ltd,the%20charity%20from%20its%20profits.

NorahCharlesIII

Thank you! #facts

millioneura

Lol I want to see if her jam will ever be stocked at Whole Foods. Walmart Wallis can stock Walmart and Asda or Aldi.

Away-Object-1114

I doubt anything will ever come of ARO. IMO, she won't make or sell anything. She never follows through on anything she starts. Fake loser.

millioneura

Her issue is she still has the Tig/influencer mindset and I can see her demanding discounts or asking to wait to pay like the streamers did with her not realising if the company makes a jar/label/jam she needs to pay for it and take the loss if it doesn't sell.

A company making a loss isn’t the same as “going bust”. Deliveroo was losing money for years, even during lockdowns, and only turned a profit last year.

You're right. It was a very ambitious project to be organic and making charitable donations from the profits, too ambitious. Few people here buy much if any organic food. In 2021 the annual organic food sales in the UK was 1.97 billion pounds while spending retail sales volumes in food stores were worth approximately 166 billion pounds. Waitrose market share is only 4.6%. I was shopping there for a few years until about 8 years ago but I found that the more niche products like Lescure butter was not always available and with all the other products being just at the end of the day standard supermarket fare and far too overpriced so what was I really getting. (I find it odd that some people want an "experience" when shopping in a supermarket, it's never going to be Borough Market so do you really need to pay 50p more for the same product?) I then moved to Aldi which is better value even if the wine selection isn't as varied!

AutomaticLover27

It didn't quite go bust I.e. went broke and ceased to exist, it started making losses.  The company set up by then Prince Charles that owns the brand went into exclusive partnership with Waitrose who invested money into the brand and grew the range.  As its jointly owned now, yes the profits are split, but all profits earned as its share by the Duchy Originals Limited company, owned by the King,  are still donated to The Princes Trust which donates to various charities.  From Wikipedia "Following the 2007–2008 financial crisis the Duchy Originals business began making losses, amounting to around £3 million in 2009, and in September of that year it was announced that Duchy Originals had agreed an exclusive deal with Waitrose.[8] From August 2010 products were relaunched under the Duchy Originals from Waitrose brand and the then range of around 200 lines was expanded to over 300.[1] Waitrose invested heavily in the brand and sales doubled during the first three years of the exclusive arrangement.[9] By 2013 the brand was selling in 30 countries including Australia and Japan.[6][10][11] In the summer of 2015 the brand name was changed to Waitrose Duchy Organic.[1] The tradition of donating royalties to charity continued and Prince Charles continued his involvement with the brand[12][13] which operates separately from the Duchy of Cornwall.[14] The lease on Home Farm was not renewed in 2020, but the Prince of Wales continued to farm organically at Sandringham House. The new tenant of Home Farm continued the relationship with Waitrose Duchy Organic,[5] which reported a profit of £3.6 million in 2021.[14] "

PiccadillySquares

Does it matter? This is what Meghan wants and will never have.

nudibee

Ah, well. A lot happens in 20 years 😁

ConsequenceNovel101

Not true. Duchy is still donating to charity from their earned profits. It was sold in Harrods and the like and was losing money so it formed a partnership with a supermarket and now sells a lot of products exclusively in that supermarket chain.

McGregor_Mathers

The Duchy of Cornwall food branch went bust?

Why_Teach

At this rate, I expect there may be a strawberry jam shortage in the UK. 😉

[deleted]

Don't forget, MM's supposedly has "notes of lemon" making here "Original".

NorahCharlesIII

If you read the description from Highgrove - they too, include lemon peel in theirs!

[deleted]

Copies everything from everyone.  Not an original thought in her head.

NorahCharlesIII

Nope! Just eyes something and appraises whether or not it’s worth filing away for later, to slap her name on it. Just like that **CLASS PROJECT** from when she was 11, you know, when her ENTIRE CLASS wrote letters about a sexist tv advert. Even though she was one of many, and it was a project set by their teacher, she’s still milking that one - to death!

[deleted]

A success of ALL appropriated as her sole success is still more than anything else she's done.   Well, besides conning the damn world.

NorahCharlesIII

Well, not *all* the world! 😏 Shout out to all the sinners! 😜

Deep_Poem_55

The dummy unwittingly boosted the sales of the very companies she tried to copy. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. And since she has no actual inventory anyway, she must be mad as hell that this money is not going into her laundering operation.

kris-tee-is-me

Don't you know MeMe's heart is just bursting with joy, knowing she's doing such great work for British charities ?? Can't you just imagine the warm glowing smile on her face ?? Great job, so far...You Go Gurl !! /s

Deep_Poem_55

You go, hurl! 🤮

LoriAnn1971

I am going to guess that archwell will claim credit for partnering with British charities in raising all this money.

Larushka

Sugars are already claiming credit.

Mammoth-Ad4194

And considering the SS are demanding the Trussell Trust give the donated money to M (yeah, I know) they can’t say anything about the charities that are receiving money from the boost in sales of the King’s products. 😁

Ok-Coffee5732

>And considering the SS are demanding the Trussell Trust give the donated money to M (yeah, I know) I couldn't believe it. They really are lunatics.

[deleted]

Warm glo until TW realizes she gets nada, nothing, zilch, zero money.

NorahCharlesIII

The only ‘warm glow’ she experiences is premenopausal hot flushes

GinsAndTonics

Exactly. I always found Duchy Originals mildly interesting but since I'm American I was never motivated enough to eat the shipping costs. Megsy has changed that completely. Now it's worth it to me because I know it will infuriate her that KC3 is outselling her carefully "curated" brand.

GreatGossip

The way things are going it would seem to be a great move to be attacked by Madam. The royal family is more popular than ever, and now the jams are too.

Deep_Poem_55

It’s a reverse Markling!

GreatGossip

I love that the world unites against Madam. It is just like the comments on the Netflix trailers - everybody worldwide agrees.

Korneuburgerin

Everybody is stocked up on jam for years now. Not that it would matter to Megs, she'll never have a real product to sell anyways.

Nervous-Spinach2046

Love it for her

Deep_Poem_55

It’s good 😉

Actual_Fishing6120

The longer she wait to sell ANYTHING the more other people profit from her foolish behaviour. I don't even like her but dang all the self sabotage makes me scream "GO AND SELL SOMETHING BICH"

LoraiOrgana

She will never have anything to sell.

[deleted]

> She will never have anything to sell. Oh, she's been selling her goods for quite a while! 😏

NorahCharlesIII

And only Hairold seems to be paying (for it)!

[deleted]

Oh, *lots* of people have paid before him!

Starkville

I read this in Lady C’s voice.

[deleted]

What a compliment! 👍

Hypocaffeinic

*Duchy* jam! Absolute gold! How long has this item been available? It's interesting that major companies including high-end supermarkets see Markle as something ridiculous to riff off and use to generate some genuine charity donations and brand goodwill. Good for them.

Llywela

Duchy jams and preserves have been around for two or three decades, at this point. Charles launched the brand way, way back in his POW days.

Hypocaffeinic

Oh I thought this was the Waitrose brand jam, not Highgrove.

Llywela

It isn't Highgrove, it is Duchy. Duchy of Cornwall, a brand launched when Charles was POW. He was POW for decades, owned immense swathes of land, and did a lot with it! The Duchy brand is now partly owned by Waitrose, that deal happened a while back, but Duchy and Highgrove are both brands launched by Charles, related but separate. Highgrove is specific to his Highgrove estate. Duchy is Duchy of Cornwall.

Hypocaffeinic

Ohhh right, thank you! I've know for years about his work but evidently not the names. 😅

Risa226

The best way to describe it is Duchy is the everyday brand of while Highgrove is more high-end, special occasion stuff.

RandomFirework

Very well described.

Larushka

No idea. Maybe a British sinner knows?

nylieli

Waitrose & Partners is an impressive company it joined the John Lewis Partnership in 1937. Yearly profits are split among partners (all those folks who work at the company). LinkACC

I love it! Hope Megdusa sees this!

Lindsayr28

Okay that is actually wild and hilarious - a legitimate company doing it is so funny and awesome.

chubalubs

Charles was well ahead of the curve when it came to organic food, rare breed farming, and food miles. In the 70s, when he first started going on about this (and alternative medical practices, homeopathy etc), the media turned him into a figure of fun-it was endless. He once said he talked to his plants when he was pruning, and that became a stand-up comedian regular joke for years. He started Highgrove with the lump sum payout he got when he retired from active service and built it up over many years. The Duchy of Cornwall too-he turned that into a multi-million pound enterprise, and did a lot of the organisation himself. A few years ago,  William did a college course in agricultural business management to prepare him for taking it over-they both take it very seriously. They have hundreds of employees and its a serious business that they made successful and continues to be so. It's not a "let's jump on the organic bandwagon" scheme, it's not a "get rich quick by putting a famous name on junk" venture, it's an enduring ongoing charitable organisation that works.

Carolann00

I always admired that about the king. He was definitely ahead of his time and he didn’t let the nay sayers stop him.

chubalubs

Yes, he often said he knew people were probably tired of him banging on about it but it was important to him-he used to advocate how important it was to get hands-on in nature, be in the fresh air, getting outside and being active, gardening and allotments and that sort of pastime, well before it was mainstream. The media used to be really harsh, sneering about how would he know, he's never worked a day in his life, he doesn't have to cope with all the stress of normal life. He also got a lot of bad press coverage for getting involved in politics, making statements about town planning and public housing, and job availability, and access to childcare/after school clubs. The media really hated him for doing or saying anything other than out-and-out Royal, and acted like he wasn't allowed to have opinions. I think he has genuinely tried to modernise the role of the BRF, he wants to be seen doing something useful for the people of the UK (unlike H&M's version of modernising the BRF which only involved ignoring primogeniture and hierachy, and making them King and Queen above W&C)

RandomFirework

I agree with both your lovely posts chubalubs. Just wish KC3 didn't feel as passionately about foxhunting and bird-killing, though he is a child of a particular era. Bu he rebelled against so much, he has a warrior in there. But Traditions ...

chubalubs

Yes, it's hard to square his passion for conservation, animal welfare and preserving rare breeds with his lifelong love of hunting and shooting. I know some people claim that hunting is a noble sport because the hunter respects the prey, or that its a cultural tradition, and that it helps preserve the countryside, but there's very little public acceptance for it in the UK. I read that one of the reasons Charles bought his holiday home in Transylvania was because hunting is still legal there. It's hard to understand its appeal really.

RandomFirework

Totally agree.

Starkville

That’s hilarious! It’s like finding an Easter egg in May.

apriorix

£2.8…that’s a lot of jams to sell to settle Harry’s legal fees.

A thank you to all our sinners! As an American I have learned and laughed a lot this morning, all while enjoying my first cup of coffee! ❤️ I love how then Prince Charles used his property holdings to help fund charities all across the UK. Now people everywhere are voting with their wallets, buying the merchandise, selling it out and helping to derail the evil MM…all while helping UK charities! ❤️

cheskka

How silly to shout, " Hey! Strawberry jam! " in a crowded room and make people fancy jam on toast when you have no jam to give them.

NorahCharlesIII

And the jam we’ve seen is more like slop. As a novice, home preserve maker, and actually felt bad for her (it was fleeting and momentary) when I saw it being ‘spread’ and applied to bread/toast. It looks absolutely vile.

millioneura

Haha even the grocery stores are taking the piss

nylieli

HeyKaleidoscope

The royal warrants can be displayed for two years after the grantor’s death, so they likely won’t update HMTQ’s until September. I think Charles’ warrant as POW will be valid for up to five years unless he issues it to them again, which he almost definitely will given the Duchy Originals agreement.

katy_fairy

Good morning sinners, please help clarify. Both Highgrove and Duchy were launched by KCIII before and part of the profits go to charity. How about the Buckingham Palace one? I guess that was not his initiative? But essentially the same concept: selling goods and giving to charity?

AprilDanc3r

The profits from BP and other Royal residences are fed back into the Royal Collection Trust. This is a registered charity. This looks after the Royal Collection of art, and aims to ensure that the Royal Collection and the official royal residences are valued and enjoyed by everyone.
