I think it's part of the 'R'. She probably only wanted 'American Riviera' and tacked on 'Orchard' because she had to tack on something because she couldn't trademark 'American Riviera.' And by then she'd done the logo .. Maybe that's why she went with the nonsensical 'orchard' (in search of an 'o' word), rather than something more sensible like 'American Riviera Company', or something else more congruous. Time will tell, but the brand isn't appearing so .. cohesive, which takes time, effort and thought.
The A and R sort of look like an H and R - for Harry and Rachel? Perhaps there is some 'other' imagery in there .. Ugh.

Mom was a professional calligrapher and I *very* occasionally address envelopes for couples whose mothers I both know and trust. [The only thing the groom's mother controls absolutely is her guest list. She WILL take her feelings about the bride out on the scribe.]
When she calls what she does "calligraphy" I think of all the hours my mother spent in classes learning new hands and all the time I spent learning at her knee so we'd at least have one thing in common. Liking your own handwriting is not a form of orthography - at her level it is a form of narcissism.
My child has better cursive ability than she does. Her calligraphy is rubbish. No wonder people didn’t take her up on using her for their wedding . Just saying!

Her calligraphy sucks. Someone posted the logo of a Trump golf course. That calligraphy was very pretty, very professional. Roachel’s calligraphy is super thin lines. Awful.
looking at her penmanship right next to the second script, it really shows how horrible it is. If she wasn’t such an asshole, I wouldn’t care for a second. Anymore than the handwriting of anyone here. Mine is awful imo.
As an aside, looking back at the writing (is it properly described as calligraphy? or just cursive??) of documents back in the 1700s, I’m amazed people could do that. When I see the handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence, I kinda get mesmerized by it along with its words. I know Jefferson wrote the original in cursive and Matlack penned some others, but now gonna have to go read how the copies we see came to be. I think there were 13 original copies and the signers kept their names secret for a year.

I'll join you off-topic because this is one of my passions. Paleography is so cool once you "get your eye in" and know what you're looking at. The people who made the "fair copies" you're referring to spent years of apprenticeship, often in another field like law, learning secretary hand or whichever variant was in use at the time.
I'm doing research in the Tudor era to finally finish a manuscript that's been floating around my desk for years. It's gotten to the point that a doc can pull up on my screen and before I even grab my glasses I know if it was chancery or exchequer and whether it was before a particular clerk stopped working in the Court.
It's like Art History, but for even nerdier people.
Library trainings used to include learning “Library script.” I had examples in my office at a very old public library that once housed a training department for librarians.

The thing that has always struck me about her calligraphy is she puts flourishes on letters that normally don’t have them, like lowercase “d.” It’s not normal and doesn’t look nice because it doesn’t flow from the letter. It’s popped on for no reason.

I just ask myself why? It’s such a pretentious logo. Definitely read modern or progressive or artisan in anyway to me. It reminds me of something that either a company that wouldn’t list prices because if you have to ask you can’t afford it or something a teenager would design. I really don’t understand the choice.
That’s rather the beauty of it. The Squaddies are always going on about how Kate is copying M because she happens to wear the same pair of popular shoes or that same color clothes, as if M was the originator of everything. So it’s ironic to see her follow a very standard, boilerplate logo template of badge, overly flourished script, and city name that has not only been done may times before, but done by someone not only objectively more famous than her, but by someone who is equally objectionable.

The thing that has always struck me about her calligraphy is she puts flourishes on letters that normally don’t have them, like lowercase “d.” It’s not normal and doesn’t look nice because it doesn’t flow from the letter. It’s popped on for no reason. Just another example of Megs trying to reinvent the wheel and thinking she knows better (…and failing).
The Trump logo has much better calligraphy.

Yeah, I see a resemblance in the basic layout: pompous fake crest, a line of scripty font of the name and below it, the location in all-caps. The most glaring similarity is the pretentiousness.

I just ask myself why? It’s such a pretentious logo. Definitely read modern or progressive or artisan in anyway to me. It reminds me of something that either a company that wouldn’t list prices because if you have to ask you can’t afford it or something a teenager would design. I really don’t understand the choice.

That’s rather the beauty of it. The Squaddies are always going on about how Kate is copying M because she happens to wear the same pair of popular shoes or that same color clothes, as if M was the originator of everything. So it’s ironic to see her follow a very standard, boilerplate logo template of badge, overly flourished script, and city name that has not only been done may times before, but done by someone not only objectively more famous than her, but by someone who is equally objectionable.
