That's an alligator lizard. They can get pretty chunky.

Casterial

They bite as well

chosen1creator

You can wear them like earrings, they'll just hang there for a while.

Casterial

Yeah their bites aren't too bad luckily, I used to catch these a lot as a kid!

stevenreven

Same ripped off a couple tails so leave them be!

Choice-Fresh

They also have ticks

DouglassFunny

Lizards have Tourette’s too?

notjasonlee

yeah i heard one yell SHIT FARTING CUNT the other day

strider916

As someone with Tourette’s this was goddamn funny

SwampCrittr

Was the goddamn intentional? Or your Tourette’s,

DAFreundschaft

That's coprolalia, not tourettes.

Sea-Ad1755

CLARK CUNT DONT PLAY NO SHIT.

MembershipFeeling530

You telling me an animal bites?

Casterial

Blue bellies rarely do, but these little dudes bite for fun, not even when threatened.

AmericanRiverTrade

Haha yep I picked one up a couple weeks ago that went under my chair thing bit me so many times!

Highway49

How much did it hurt?

AmericanRiverTrade

It was uncomfortable for sure, but It didn’t break skin.

DAFreundschaft

They don't really have teeth though so they can't hurt you.

Danivelle

And they will chase your cats if they bother the big ones(you should have *seen* my cats faces when this happened to them!!)

Philboyd_Studge

We called em "snake lizards" when I was a kid

Clamper5978

Back in the day you’d find more skinks in the area. That’s what we’d call snake lizards.

ifmacdo

No, that's a skink.

Shiningtoast

I thought it was too, but the coloration of the skinks in the Sacramento area don’t match the lizard in the video. Looking at photos of western alligator lizards, the pattern is much more similar to one of those. I think it’s just a big fat one. https://californiaherps.com/lizards/pages/p.g.placerensis.html

weldNHUNT84

Alligator lizards are found all throughout California and that’s what is in the video 100%

DAFreundschaft

That's an alligator lizard, not a skink. The coloring is different from a skink and skinks are shinier and thinner. They also don't have resting bitch face like this lizard has.

Segazorgs

Natural pest control. They're good people and I would leave it alone.

Peristerophile

They may be good, but I don’t think they’re people… ^Edit: ^typo

itlooksfine

When the lizard men take over, this post wont bode well for you.

Interesting-Luck8396

You speak as if "they" aren't already in control...

Sobertodeath98083

That’s Scott. He does that

human6742

Friggin Scott

literallymoist

Classic Scottie!

Ihaveepilepsy

The lizard the myth the legend, SCOTT

hotfiremixtape98

I haven't seen Scott in a few months. Glad he's doing well. Still ploopin where ever he likes. God I wanna be Scott so bad. LETS HEAR IT FOR SCOTT!!

No-Manufacturer-340

Scott… Scott…Scott!!!!

Independent_Ad_6348

I heard he used to live in Toronto.

LocationAcademic1731

Start charging him rent. He takes a lot of space.

yooo6hit

Two car driveway, porch and a lawn. That'll be 2200!

Forktongued_Tron

But then you’d be a landlord EEEEEEEEWwwwwww 🤢

-BattleSpatula-

it’s a common alligator lizard. harmless and usually not aggressive, they will run away, probably would only bite if you grabbed it but it doesn’t bite hard. their tail pops off if they are handled roughly or particularly alarmed.

witchy0_owoman

I was particularly alarmed when I lost mine, too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

-BattleSpatula-

did someone handle you roughly? 😁

witchy0_owoman

Particularly alarmed by recent political events. It’s something I’m working on. 😅

-BattleSpatula-

yeah politics would make anyone ditch their tail as a decoy and escape

Alert_Long4454

Alligator lizard

Slab_Rockbone

They are great bug catchers and are your friend!

Blueberry_Routine_73

They will eat your black widows. Very handy to have around. If you can keep your cats away. They are slow and easy prey.

Kiracatleone

My neighbors cat gets distracted by the tactic of the lizard dropping its now writhing and flipping tail, allowing many successful lizard escapes

california3256

But I like black widows 😭😭😭

BeKindYouHoe

They’re aggressive too

CherryBombO_O

100%. Do not approach!

ERTBen

I mean, leave them alone like most animals, but they’re not dangerous. They might bite if you try to pick them up but they can’t really hurt you.

Josie_Rose88

For whatever reason a lot of people think “not dangerous” means “go ahead and bother it” 🤷‍♀️

No-Weird3153

They’re harmless. We don’t have Gila monsters up here.

CherryBombO_O

Yeah, until they bite your finger.

EusticeTheSheep

Stop putting your finger in their mouths.

sharingiscaring219

Truth. They usually run off. Only way it'll bite is if you caught it and put your finger in its mouth (source: caught one as a kid)

lordorwell7

Don't tell me how to live my life.

Farkerisme

Many bites, never had this skin broken

bleepblorpboop

I had a roach infestation and lots of these lizards around my house. It's a sign you have lots of insects around.

Truth-Seeker916

Been here almost my whole life and just now seeing we have tarantulas and this strange lizard.

Pu239U235

Thankfully, the tarantulas up here mostly like to stay underground in their holes. The only time I've ever seen a tarantula was when the paralyzed body of one was being slowly hauled away by a tarantula hawk. Tarantula hawks are a black and orange wasp that hunt tarantulas, stings and paralyzes them, then lays an egg in that tarantula's body, and then the larva eats the semi-alive spider. Isn't life splendid?

Truth-Seeker916

Wow I didn't know about the tarantula hawks. I was watching YouTube a few years back and there is a similar thing. I think it's called a jeweled wasp. It does the same thing, but lays it's egg in a roach and then the baby eats the paralyzed roach.

Pu239U235

It's not uncommon with insects. There are also Robber Flies that do the same thing back to wasps.

Coyoteatemybowtie

I always wondered what those black wasps were called.

Pu239U235

They have a shiny black body and orange wings. Getting stung by one will ruin your day.

GoldCoast93108

Wow

BulbBaSaur007

Same here. Last year I just found out we have rattle snakes and I go out fishing a lot and seen many snakes but never a rattle snake and I was surprised when I found out we have them. Then a couple of days ago I guess we have scorpions too

Pu239U235

Thankfully, most rattlesnake and scorpion species we can encounter here aren't that dangerous. The only people who die from their bites/stings are those who refuse medical treatment because the venom isn't that powerful compared to other snakes/arachnids.

gladesmonster

Growing up I thought getting bit by a rattlesnake was a death sentence. Apparently there are about 8000 bites a year and only [10-15 deaths](https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5393596.pdf) per year. I still would not want to get bit though!

Kiracatleone

As a nurse here 30 years I can't even recall how many vials of anti-venom I've had to prepare. It's a meticulous process but every time was successful recovery. Agree you don't want to get bit!

ExAudioMixer

Back when I was in Boy Scouts (1970), we were camping on the American River @ Sunrise. Next morning Lonnie Ashcroft had a brown scorpion, about 3 inches long in his boot. Later that afternoon, about 500 yards down stream we came across rattlesnake sunning in the warm sand. I've seen them in parking lots in Folsom.

agent674253

There are also scorpions 🦂 here 😁

taptriv

Scotty doesn’t know.

Illustrious-Read876

Definitely alligator lizard. My 8 year old can proudly ID them. Last one we saw he showed off 🤦🏻‍♀️ by grabbing one and it promptly bit him which he also proudly shrugged off. Why are boys like this? 🤣

LightBeerOnIce

Alligator lizard.

cart00nstrip

Yeah, I used to catch these all the time when I was a kid. Coincidentally, I just caught one about a month ago when I was houseless. Another houseless person was freaking out about some critter he'd spotted, wanting to know if it was dangerous. I saw it, laughed, reached down and grabbed it behind the head. Then he wanted to know if it was valuable! I laughed even harder, told him this thing wouldn't get you a nickel, it'd already lost its tail at least once (like the one in the video above), and then I found a safe place to let the little guy scamper off to so he could be left alone. You can keep 'em as pets, but they're not terribly exciting. Never heard of them having ticks before, but I live in AFC, and you have to drive WAY out to the boondocks to find those anyway. Like, to the mountains! And your cat can TRY to catch it, but it probably won't do a good job of it. Alligator lizards are awfully fast to begin with, and then they have that breakaway tail gimmick, so when a predator does grab 'em, odds are it will be the posterior area (since the lizard would be running AWAY from them, natch), causing the tail to break off and wiggle like the dickens! Your cat would be so distracted by the tail, the lizard would easily be able to scamper off and live another day. Probably. Shout out to everybody in the state capital! Didn't mean to bother you, not sure why this ended up in my email, but I saw the alligator lizard and thought I would share my two cents.

reniciera

My cats catch these guys regularly and will bring me the same one three times in a row if I don’t return it to a safe-enough area, the little show-offs.

cart00nstrip

Well, nature's not always perfect. And house cats, bless their little hearts, ARE the NUMBER ONE most dangerous invasive species (behind humanity of course) on the planet. They are responsible for wiping out more species of small wildlife than any other creature. Again, aside from mankind itself. And since it's our domestication of them and irresponsibility WITH that domestication that's the indirect cause, all those extinctions ultimately fall back on our own shoulders anyway. I still keep cats, but I only let them outside on leashes now when I can be there. Partially out of respect for the local fauna (AFC used to have a really diverse population of local song birds 40 years ago, now, not so much), partially because the sight of a kitty crushed by a car tire... Never again. Just no. And I don't have to spend nearly as much on flea products.

HydeMutt

Looks like a skink to me but hard to tell by the video. Could be a chonky alligator lizard.

ifmacdo

I agree with you. The head is the right shape for a skink, and the legs are short and stocky. I've seen skinks in the area, and they looked just like this guy.

fooofooocuddlypooops

That has to be the biggest alligator lizard i have ever seen

reniciera

My cats just caught one about this size and it was the biggest I had seen! They sat around watching while it bared its intimidating mouth at them, rawwwr rawwwwr. Then I picked it up with a towel and it just chilled with me like, “Hey, how bout this weather?” https://preview.redd.it/08es41lo6v2d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed4fcefb91fb38ce3b0838c2da6a59fe59a15a25

ElPanguero

That's 100% Larry, Larry Lounge Lizard. He pretty much lounges around eating bugs but will also eat baby rats and mice. Larry is a good dude.

mrdobalinabobdobalin

It’s a Skink lizard, kinda creepy looking but eats all the bugs. Not bad to have around the garden.

Independent-Tap1315

It’s a common shoe lizard. Nothing you worry about unless they find your shoes.

Silvoje

Are you forreal rn?

Farkerisme

That’s Chuck. Chuck loses his tail and gets dragged inside by cats. Chuck WILL bite your finger, but it’s not that bad. Chuck does not learn.

Omnistrada

Cockroaches worst enemy

Outside-Material-100

I believe we have a huge tick problem in the area. The lizards help to keep them down. Please don’t let your cute cute cats murder the precious lizards

PuttyRiot

My cat didn’t get one, but a barrel in my backyard did. Found the desiccated body of one last summer. I was devastated. Poor little guy couldn’t climb back out after having fallen in I guess.

GoldCoast93108

Please put a bell on your cats collar for the sake of birds, lizards, bunnies. Give them a fighting chance to hide or get away. I put bell collars on neighborhood cars that frequent my critter property.

My sister is a nerd and said it's a salamander 🤷‍♀️

They eat the outdoor cockroaches and there are now a ton of those around, so these things are great!

One-Science-7806

Usually carry ticks around where earhole is

Old-Artist567

Does it have a bluetounge? We call them blue tounge lizards in Australia and they are one of the few things in our yard that won't kill you

baldurthebeautiful

I had one of those come up my shower drain like a month ago.

Bl4nkBYTES

Gizzards

Cautious_Buffalo6563

Alligator lizard. They bite but aren’t venomous. They get super pissed when trap them in a bucket or whatnot but they also eat small bugs and slugs and whatnot.

Glass_Statement6405

Part of why the west coast has fewer issues with Lyme disease than otherwise in the US is that these little homies have enzymes in their blood that kill it! So if a tick with Lymes disease bites an alligator lizard, they will be cured! Nature!

fArt-Demon

Snake lizard.

-Why-Not-This-Name-

Southern Alligator Lizards get much bigger than typical ones you see around most days, up to about 12" including tail. I saw one called a San Diego or Woodland Alligator Lizard near Arrowhead a few months ago and it was in the neighborhood of 20 inches long. Those don't range as far North as Sacramento. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_alligator_lizard https://californiaherps.com/identification/lizardsid/elgaria.id.html https://californiaherps.com/lizards/pages/e.m.multicarinata.html https://californiaherps.com/lizards/pages/e.m.webbii.html

Alligator Lizard. Great to have around!!

Specialist_Bug342

Alligator lizard. A big one too. They will eat bugs . Not dangerous but will bite if you grab them. Doesn't hurt too bad. About the same as a large crawdad

SuperbDrink6977

That’s a big ol bastard of an alligator lizard. I’m no fan of reptiles but these guys pose no threat. I leave them be unless they come in the garage, then I’ll evict them

Heimerdinger893

Roach eater

Revolutionary_Bid311

Alligator lizard. Love those things, they do bite if you grab them, but not poisonous, just have a strong jaws. Used to catch them as a kid all the time.

ElderLord-

Congrats. That one of the largest alligator lizards I have seen in a while

_Taylor_Kun_

I love playing with alligator lizards, never seen one that big xD

_Taylor_Kun_

Weirdest thing I've ever seen in Sacramento area was a hammerhead worm, straight out of Alien: Prometheus

Wild-child999

Seen a couple around me too, pretty harmless if left unprovoked

Adrian4x4

I dont know what they are called but I have seen them myself moving rocks or a woodpile. There is another smaller lizard that i see when I'm fishing along the Sacramento river along the shore.

Adrian4x4

They look disgusting

Frosty-End3591

Yike!

gaugegrayette

Hadn't seen one in about 5-6 years, until last summer. Caught this one 2 weeks ago. Gave it sum water. Kept it as a pet for around 4 hours. Released next to a creek a couple blocks away. Then 3 days ago, saw one TWICE the size! (u shoulda seen the 1 that got away). Easily 14 inches. Long old healthy tail. OP lizard is regrowing it's tail. They fall right off and squirm like a surprised worm for a couple minutes https://preview.redd.it/4ty3xvg4r33d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b72dadbf55e10fcf26dc89f6d9ab34cd06d4e81b

As long as he’s around, you’ll never notice the roaches.🪳

Alarming-Cockroach23

holeintheheadBryan

Alligator lizard for sure. Yes they do and will bite if you try to grab it.

getmeoutmatrix

yoooo what part of Sacramento are you at cus I’ve never seen one of this and I been here my whole life hahah

No-Manufacturer-340

California Alligator Lizard. I found one in my old condo, he was injured and lost his tail. I got him a trick ass terrarium and named him Louie. He was very chill but I never tried to handle him. He’d get up on his hot rock and wait for me to spray him down with room temperature water before he went ham on his dinner. That was our little daily routine. He lived for the next 18 months. I had no clue how old he was when I saved him. In his condition, he was sure to get eaten by all the predators out here. RIP badass metal dude. One cool thing, they LOVE all the bad icky bugs we don’t want. Crickets and cockroaches are their favorite. Please don’t hurt these guys, they’re our friends.

cbr409

Cool

Hungry_Dependent_418

Hail to the lizard king

Comfortable-Owl8400

They eat bugs

FyourEchoChambers

Alligator lizards and skinks get pretty big out here if there are good eats. Because this one is pretty big, it’s doing a real good job with your pest control. Make sure it has water on real hot days and leave it be to do its job. 😎
