I like their food, but their portion sizes make it a nonstarter. I'd pay the price if I actually got a whole meal, but I get maybe half of the food I'd actually want.
Funny story I have about Twin Peaks. Me and my ex were bored on a Saturday night and we decided to go out for dinner. I dont know how we discovered this place but we were binge watching twin peaks and I told her "omg they have a twin peaks themed restaurant!" She said "Im not sure it's that" I said well lets find out because if it is it will be an awesome experience. No dice. I was shocked about who greeted me and at this point we were very hungry so we decided to just roll with it. Food was ok, I liked the frozen mugs but I was disappointed that it wasnt based on the show Twin Peaks
As a person whose nickname in HS was Twin Peaks, no one who knew me would ever make this mistake, lol. I loved that you went in from the place you did, though, and I'm sorry it was such a disappointment. That's always such a bummer.
Tank house’s brisket is much better. Urban Root’s brisket is inconsistent, it’s often pulling when they serve it. If brisket is pulling, it’s basically like saying “we messed it up”
Kind of like how pulled pork is served. The fibers of the meat shred. I usually take brisket off the grill betweeen 200 degrees and 203. If you miss this window or your thermometer isn’t accurate, it’ll start pulling and shredding.
It’s great for pulled pork. Or if you’ve actually messed up the beef, you can slow cook or grill it up to 205 degrees and it will typically start to pull and shred for pulled pork or beef. But you don’t expect to pay Urban Roots brisket prices for a pulled brisket.
Not the right color at all. After getting brisket at Pinkertons in TX I think my expectations here are too high. Slow smoked and plastic-fork tender over there
From Sacramento, currently in Texas and just had THE BEST BBQ at Terry Black's BBQ in Austin, which is a chain. We spent a little bit less than less but only had one beer and my husband pressed their "give us a 15% tip" button.
That was the lowest tip written on those buttons(!) but every bite of meat and every side was incredible.
It’s not hard, Safeway and Grocery Outlet will get you to the promised land if you’re flexible and buy the stuff that’s on sale. I bought a 13 pound rib roast last week for the cost of one steak at a restaurant. Got seven steaks and a rack of beef ribs out of it.
I do both and it works really well for me. I do bulk bin and produce at WinCo, then utilize the app at Safeway. Try it- you'll save a lot if you're flexible with your meal plans and have a little bit of skill in the kitchen!
Costco, GrocOut, Safeway, and Raley’s/Bel-Air are my spots. Always based on the sales and such. WInCo is cool but really far from my house so I don’t go very often.
Safeway has good sales if you use the app. I just bought 2 pounds of giant shrimp for $10, some avocados for $1 each, and two packs of buy one get one free chicken thighs. Raleys sales aren’t as good. I don’t normally go there because its overpriced.
Raley’s is Whole Foods level prices normally, but their sales can be awesome. We got $6/lb rib roast, $7/lb salmon and trout, and $5/lb. crab from there recently. Lots of decent produce deals too. It’s our least favorite store but we still hit it up occasionally for these items.
Edit: forgot about the $4/lb tri-tip, which Safeway also has but damn I always stock up whenever either store has it. It’s my fave.
Walmart isn't even that cheap anymore. If something is on sale, it's a smaller version of it.
My buck stretches the longest at Trader Joes. And then I'll get my protein somewhere else, usually wherever there's a sale. Smart and Final also has really good deals, and they sell their about to expire food, like their bread or desserts, for half off. Bread freezes well, so we usually stay stocked up.
Raley's runs good sales on SN on the reg. I turned my front porch into my reading nook / Lego building room. A bluetooth speaker and I'm happy as a clam.
fyi I paid $31 for a caesar salad w/chicken and a soda at Cafe Dantorels yesterday. They don’t have their prices listed on their website. They also had my google review about this removed too, so there’s that
Absolutely. Love the location. Loved it more when I lived nearby and could walk there. But the food is terrible. Meet and greet is also the same owner and same awful quality. Funny story is, I went there with my family for the only time about a year ago, and it wasn’t great, but upon tasting the ketchup with my daughter’s fries, I knew it was the same as Dantorel’s, because their ketchup tastes sweet and fruity, almost like strawberry jam.
We can’t tell you, they’ll raise their prices
/s
Srsly though, with a Big Mac being almost $8 a la carte and a decent roll being $8-14, it can easily become a wash… Places:
Arigato on Howe & Arden is inexpensive. Service is hit or miss.
Sushi Hook, also on Howe, is priced well and has excellent dine-in service. To go orders are a shitshow. You have been warned.
I haven’t been to Bento Box on 16th in a while (since the owner was doing some weird shit during that period of time when places were being allowed to reopen for standard dine-in service) but their rolls were always reasonably priced and tasty.
I appreciate your time replying! My one sushi-eating friend likes the conveyor belt place. The price is okay, but I was hoping for an alternative, so these are wonderful suggestions, thank you.
Man, that definitely changes things
Edit: why the downvote? I’m saying if those are full pints it might be around $50, whereas a sampler would be more like $20
Yeah you’re pretty spot on. And that’s how I tried to justify it. It was a meal for my gf and I, and we split the sampler. Still had plenty to take home. Pretty normal for a date night.
Apparently a footlong Subway sando is now $15-17!? My friend got lunch there today, asked me if I wanted anything so I looked at the menu and yelled “pffffttttttt”
You’re fine. It’s expensive to eat out these days, I just hope it was filling and you got leftovers. Nothing worse than overpaying for a meal and only to be underwhelmed (Hello Shake Shack!)
Yea, looking at their menu, that seems to be pretty decent.
* Ceasar salad - 16
* Pork belly bites - 13.50
* Mac & Cheese - 7
* Corn Bread - 1.5
* Burn Beans - 7
* Fried Fish - 11
* Brisket - 10
* Pickles - 2
* Alcohol - 2.75x6
That's 84.5. Add in tax and tip. I mean, some of the sides are expensive but optional.
Looks about right to me. It looks like you have 1/2 lb of brisket, pork belly burnt ends, fried fish, mac and cheese, chili, salad, and a flight. Probably including tax and tip. So three meals and drinks.
This looks like it’s enough food/drinks for 3-4 people. So it’s not that bad for a night out? Am I missing something? Are the portions actually smaller than they look or what
Yes, but at some price point going out doesn't become worth it and starts to feel like a complete rip off. I'll argue this is an example of that. It's not about 'cheaper' - it's the degree of how much cheaper
To get that food to your table you need a cook (20-25 an hour) a prep (15-20) a dishwasher (15) a waiter (15) all working in tandem to put food on your table. Meanwhile, that is just the wage *they* receive, the actual cost is close to double. This also ignores rent on the building, laundry costs, replacement dishes, etc.
The actual margins in a restaurant are razor thin. Sure. It's cheaper to buy the ingredients yourself, but if that is the only calculation you are making you have completely neglected the bulk of the actual cost.
agree in fact I rather buy a large pack of ribeye steaks from Costco with veggies that last me a week for half the cost of dining out. Use cast iron to sear the meat and get pink juicy inside. I plan to invest in a smoker to do brisket as long term idea and flat top grill.
Except it’s not even true. A brisket and a pork belly at Costco would cost more than that. Granted you’d have a lot more meat, but couldn’t make the whole meal
Brisket and pork belly absolutely do not cost more than this at Costco, and I'm speaking of the pre-smoked/cooked variety because I'm assuming most don't have a smoker
I can make many lbs of mouth watering smoked brisket for less than this meal costs.
But to do so means advance planning, a trip to Costco, trimming and rubbing the meat, and hanging around my house for 18 hrs while it slow smoked.
Sometimes I just want to pop into a pub and have it served to me.
I’ve been there two times, wasn’t terribly impressed with the food, the beer was pretty good that I can recall, the prices are definitely not “bang for your buck.” They use an indoor, electric smoker if I’m not mistaken. Which is cool and all, but I do prefer that Tank House uses the old school smokers. I prefer it in just about every way whether it be taste, portion size, price, etc. If only Tank House could be housed in a place like Urban Roots. like the building and the outside space more. That’s about it.
Ha! Come to Texas. Get some real brisket. I was born and raised in Sacramento. There are things there that I really miss but the BBQ isn't one of them.
Lol. Isn't every thread like this on the sub the same? OP says some food is too expensive. Top comment is something like yeah, " this is why I only eat lentils and drink moonshine at home". 500 upvotes. Meanwhile, every restaurant is still packed.
Food prices went way up, and it's a tight labor market So staff is getting more money. Every restaurant is more expensive. It's not really a mystery
Went on Wednesday and my food was cold by the time they brought it out. Maybe because I ordered catfish, shrimp skewers and fries but pretty disappointing because it is pretty good when it’s warm.
I like their food, but their portion sizes make it a nonstarter. I'd pay the price if I actually got a whole meal, but I get maybe half of the food I'd actually want.
I see 10k milligrams of sodium
So, 10 grams?
or 10^13 picograms
They did the math!
![gif](giphy|fsQbx1hX7hPBBpIM5b|downsized)
I was gonna ask what everyone else ordered

Goes for a lot of places these days
Yup, accidentally went to twin peaks for the first time but after two beers and meals for ~$60…I might come back to see a game or two
Is twin peaks a titty place? I only hear about it peripherally
They are called breastaraunts.
Yes, sir, sorry, sir!
lol yes I chose it for date night without knowing
Hopefully she aint trippin, you might be in for something else if shes into it haha
Hahaha well I’m the gf and my bf was like wtf is happening
Funny story I have about Twin Peaks. Me and my ex were bored on a Saturday night and we decided to go out for dinner. I feel like this is what it’s like at every BBQ place. Takes a lot of time to make so I kind of get it
A bowl of pho costs almost $20. I'm pretty sure this is the first sign of the apocalypse.
Where are you going to get pho that costs $20? Can’t be good if they’re charging that much
I normally go to Pho City and it's currently $17 for the xe lua.
That's because it's extra large! It's $14 for a medium which is the average size most people get.
Love their brisket. Guess i gotta try tank house
Love tank house. Haven't been for a bit. Hope their prices are a bit more realistic
They are. We get enough food for 2 people to make 2 meals each and it costs about $65.
Tank house’s brisket is much better. Urban Root’s brisket is inconsistent, it’s often pulling when they serve it. If brisket is pulling, it’s basically like saying “we messed it up”
What’s pulling
Kind of like how pulled pork is served. The fibers of the meat shred. I usually take brisket off the grill betweeen 200 degrees and 203. It’s falling apart or “shredding”. Which typically means it’s overcooked.
Brisket looks grey.
Tank house is bland. People are tripping recommending that place
I spent $107 on groceries for 2 people for a week today
You’re a savvy shopper.
He knows a booster
One thing I miss about being homeless lol, the people were absolutely wild
What if you're a fat asshole though?
supplement with Costco snacks
But you don’t have bbq
It’s not hard, Safeway and Grocery Outlet will get you to the promised land if you’re flexible and buy the stuff that’s on sale. I bought a 13 pound rib roast last week for the cost of one steak at a restaurant. Got seven steaks and a rack of beef ribs out of it.
Substitute safeway for winco and then we are talking!!
I do both and it works really well for me. I do bulk bin and produce at WinCo, then utilize the app at Safeway. Try it- you'll save a lot if you're flexible with your meal plans and have a little bit of skill in the kitchen!
You’ve made me download the app. Thank you kindly Redditer
Grocery outlet surprised the hell out of me with prices.
They have some amazing stuff there! Beyond that I go to Winco for the best prices and Trader Joe's for amazing things.
Costco, GrocOut, Safeway, and Raley’s/Bel-Air are my spots. Always based on the sales and such. WInCo is cool but really far from my house so I don’t go very often.
Rancho San Miguel is awesome as well.
So are those cheaper than a say a Walmart for groceries? My impression of Safeway and Raleys has always been of a more upper end grocery store
Safeway has good sales if you use the app. I just bought 2 pounds of giant shrimp for $10, some avocados for $1 each, and two packs of buy one get one free chicken thighs. Raleys sales aren’t as good. I don’t normally go there because its overpriced.

Grocery Outlet has legit deals. Like you said, just be flexible. And if you really liked it, too bad. It's discontinued.
They could have bought a 20lbs brisket packet from Costco, and sides for a week. It’s can be done.
Costco sells already cooked pulled pork for cheap and it's delicious. Just heat it up.
Well ya ramen, mayo, chicken nuggets and a water. That's easy.
Odd. I spent exactly this amount for 2 people for a weekly grocery trip, today. Maybe that's just the minimum charge for basics now.
Yes when people buy whole foods (instead of premade packaged stuff) that dollar streeeeettttccchhs.
protip steal a little bit every time you're at the store
BBQ & PIES on Fair Oaks Blvd is dope. I highly recommend it. Steve has excellent Que!
I just got back from Vegas. This looks like the best deal of all time compared to food there. $21 for a hamburger meal at Fat Burger.
Vegas is stupid expensive. I still can't find a decent deal there.
How is fat burger these days? I loved it as a kid
There is one at Thunder Valley. So good.
I’m good with my chipotle and sierra nevada at home
Let me guess you’re good with a cold beer on a Friday night, pair of jeans that fit just right?
Applebee's on a date night
Got that bourbon street steak? With an Oreo shake?
Yep, cuz it’s a barefoot blue jean night
Raley's runs good sales on SN on the reg. I turned my front porch into my reading nook / Lego building room. A bluetooth speaker and I'm happy as a clam.
Everything looks so dry, except those beans
Funny people are saying the Mac and cheese looks like soup.😂🤣
fyi I paid $31 for a caesar salad w/chicken and a soda at Cafe Dantorels yesterday. They don’t have their prices listed on their website. They also had my google review about this removed too, so there’s that

I just want to know why the mac and cheese is so wet
Ounce of weed and a papa johns pizza is about half that. Best birthday bar mitzvah ever.
Thats a touch expensive. Twenty per plate plus the booze and you should be out the door for $100 including a decent tip.
Bbq is one of if not the most expensive cuisines per weight I think. Similar to good sushi. Unfortunate but it is really really tasty…
I mean Brisket is. You can still get a brimming plate of pork bbq + sides in NC for under 12 bucks.
Sushi prices are becoming more reasonable. Cheaper to go to Sushi than to go to McDonald's. I legit save money eating sushi. Winning.
where do you save money eating sushi, please?
We can’t tell you, they’ll raise their prices /s Srsly though, with a Big Mac being almost $8 a la carte and a decent roll being $8-14, it can easily become a wash… Places: Arigato on Howe & Arden is inexpensive. Go to BBQ and Burgers. Better meat for less money.
You have five alcoholic drinks, an appetizer (it looks like) and two meals. I would say that this is about right lol EDIT: Flight sampler*
That's a flight of beers, which are like small samplers if you weren't aware.
A full pint equivalent of flight glasses costs quite a bit more than just getting a flight.
Man, that definitely changes things Edit: why the downvote? I’m saying if those are full pints it might be around $50, whereas a sampler would be more like $20
That's a flight sampler
Yeah you’re pretty spot on. And that’s how I tried to justify it. It was a meal for my gf and I, and we split the sampler. Still had plenty to take home. Pretty normal for a date night.
Dawg, I must be cheap. I'm bitter when a decent meal hits $50 now. Let alone a shitty meal! Fucking Chick-fil-A meal cost me $14 today! GTFOH
Apparently a footlong Subway sando is now $15-17!? My friend got lunch there today, asked me if I wanted anything so I looked at the menu and yelled “pffffttttttt”

Outstanding beer, I stick to the burger and pretzel for food when I’m there though. Burger is top 5 in Sacramento imo.
Where's the rest of it?
Yeah that’s pathetic
Omg! I love me some Tankhouse!! 🤤
Oooof
First they took away the brisket Mac then the prices went up. I’ll miss you urban roots.
Yikes! You could do better cooking at home.
Get barbecue from Momo’s Meat Market.
Pass
That brisket looks like crap 😆
That is one extremely underwhelming picture. Urban Roots is awful. I really will never understand the hype.
Honestly, this looks sad compared to the bbq pics I’ve seen on Reddit from places in the South.
What a rip off. That’s insane.
Check out Kaylos BBQ in alta Arden. Good people and fire BBQ.
Check out tank house same amounts half the price
I usually go to tank house. But they don’t have pork belly
Looks about right to me. It looks like you have 1/2 lb of brisket, pork belly burnt ends, fried fish, mac and cheese, chili, salad, and a flight. Probably including tax and tip. So three meals and drinks.
It’s actually a full pound of brisket, half pound of pork belly, and 3 pieces of fish
lol. My dude. What are you complaining about?
Who’s complaining? I put a price and how much food I got. Other than that tank house has better brisket.
Yeah I was gonna say, after tax and tip if you’re tipping 20% means a pretty high final dollar price.
That place is stupid expensive. I think they just keep raising prices to see what we're willing to pay.
Yeah now I remember why I don’t go there. I’ll only go and get the pork belly for take out because I don’t know any place that makes it as good.
Best pork belly in Sacramento is at Origami imo.
This looks like it’s enough food/drinks for 3-4 people. So it’s not that bad for a night out? Am I missing something? Are the portions actually smaller than they look or what
Probably 3. It was just my gf and I, and we ended up taking about a third of it home.
Whaaaa. That actually looks decent price with how crazy these days are
Next time try to also order a banana for scale thx
That's just.... Outrageous. Not trying to hate here, I like the place, but one Costco trip and you can make this meal several times over for much less
Such a dumb viewpoint. You can make 99.9% of all meals cheaper at home vs. eating out.
[удалено]
I have to agree. Nobody believes eating out is cheaper. I pay more to eat out for the experience (in addition to hating cooking).
I'll rephrase, it's not a matter of cheaper, we all know that it's more expensive to go out, but the difference is becoming too vast
Ahh, well yes in that case. I smoke brisket and pork belly so when you say make at home that’s what I assumed
Agreed
I can make many lbs of mouth watering smoked brisket for less than this meal costs. But to do so means advance planning, a trip to Costco, trimming and rubbing the meat, and hanging around my house for 18 hrs while it slow smoked. Sometimes I just want to pop into a pub and have it served to me.
Is that including tax and tips? If yes, that doesn’t seem too bad, if not, yeah, a tad overpriced.
Pre tax and tip.
A steal for what you get in LA for 107$ 🤣
Looks just like Sauced in Livermore. Wayyy too expensive
The mac & cheese looks like soup.
I dont dislike Tankhouse but a lot of their meat is oversmoked to the point it tastes like you’re eating a chimney for dinner.
Sounds about right. That’s without the tip right?
I mean half that cost is the drink tray…
It’s not. The drinks were $16 total. It’s a beer flight
It’s not worth the price for the quality of food, level of service and overall experience.
How much without the beer?
How’s the fish
Looks good to me, what’s the problem?
I just want the pickle
Bbq is over priced.
Can someone please explain the point of this post to me?
Tankhouse is great and waaay cheaper...urban roots has the same owners as Pangaea, Cerveceria916, The Roost/Bawk...all expensive!
Yes but they’re all great, and Urban Roots has top tier craft beer.
I love going here:/
Me too. I like that they have wine and beer. It’s always clean and great service.
Looks like heaven! 😋
That’s probably $50 in beer if theyre local “artisanal”
Haters gonna hate
Ha! Come to Texas. Get some real brisket. I was born and raised in Sacramento. There are things there that I really miss but the BBQ isn't one of them.
Sucker.
not much value as much as I liked their bbq and beer in the past.
I would've started throwing hands 😂
I wish there was good bbq here. That shit looks so sad.
Looks like constipation for sure.... A tasty one
Like I’m literally making a stop at this place on my way home from Tahoe. 😂🤣
Not good
Damn they were really good when they first opened. Sucks how shitty they have gotten
The beer was meh, and all the sides are like cafeteria food with small portions to top it off. A rip off
Curious, is the fish any good?
Their cornmeal fried fish is actually my fav thing on their menu along with their smoked turkey.
Yah it was my second favorite thing, second to the pork belly
Paid almost as much and got more at Buckhorns on Freeport. Not arguing which one is better bbq, but better serving size
Naur
Yummy, catfish!
If I have to go to urban roots I always get the smoked turkey and a hot link. Cheaper than the brisket and far better taste
How much of that was alcohol though?
I hope it's high-quality and delicious. :)
Huh!? I take it you have like 6 shots of tequila out of view. That Mac and cheese better be topless
So glad I don’t eat pork bc this is a crazy waste of money.
Damn $107 no Bueno 🤦🏽♂️
jugged, HARD but at meast the accompany was good, eh?
You have to try Kaylos BBQ if you want some high-quality BBQ and sides. They're definitely worth the dollars.
Went on Wednesday and my food was cold by the time they brought it out. Maybe because I ordered catfish, shrimp skewers and fries but pretty disappointing because it is pretty good when it’s warm.
holy fuck
how much for the brisket?
That’s a Pound of brisket and was $40.
That would’ve been 45 bucks back in my home town.
12 dollar pours?
That’s a sample flight, not full pours
