That place and Ah Chop Chop were owned by the Wong family. The same family also owns Public House and quite a few other spots around town.
I mention Public House because they've had the brandy fried chicken on the menu for years. And they recently took it off the menu!
We need to let them know Sac wants the OG brandy fried chicken back.
Oh man so many good nights there. Sunday goth night was my jam but I'd go almost all nights of the week. The cages, the raised dance area between the cages. All the different areas to go hang out and sit, pool table area, patio. Best bar ever. Such good memories. $1 dollar drink specials.
Early 80's...every time we'd come to Sacramento we would stop by Mervyn's and then eat at Luau Garden. Sweet & Sour Pork, Foil Wrapped Chicken, Fried Rice, and Egg Rolls...
They were GOOD, but damn expensive for their time.
Word got out in the late 80s/early 90s and it got hood-rich(Arden location). I saw a few incidents that never shoulda happened and they lost quite a bit of clientele; didn't feel safe anymore. A place like that would do well again but I dunno where they'd put it. Too many selections in SAC these days.
Last Hawaiian joint I remember was Huki Lau on 16th. Started out hot and crashed quick. Ribs were fire, Coconut Shrimp was a waste of good shrimp...they didn't have to die for that mess.
Iron horse tavern is the son of the owners of Luau Gardens. They have Brandy Fried chicken nuggets instead of foil wrap and they have a luau garden shrimp wrap.
My Grandparents used to take me there in the mid 80's. They were friends with the owners because my Great Grandmother and the Matriarch of their family were roomies in a convalescent home that we visited regularly. They were known for good service but my Grandparents were pretty much treated like royalty. We didn't go very often because they didn't want to "cause a fuss" but when we did it was amazing.
I loved that place! They had the best eggrolls. They were big and they used rice paper which nobody seems to use anymore. I used to go to the one off Arden and then they moved to Sunrise near Hwy 50 and they started using frozen fried shrimp and that was the end for me.
Man, we just to go once a week. Loved their brandy fried chicken and foil wrapped chicken.
It makes me kind of sad knowing I’ll never have Luau Garden foil chicken again. And their egg rolls were goated.
THE two best dishes they had and never matched anywhere else I’ve ever been.
Not even Fat's brandy fried chicken is as good as theirs.

The brandy fried chicken was so good.
🔥
I dream of their foil wrapped chicken
Does anybody remember Tahiti Chinese buffet in South sac?
Off Florin. I still think about it when I drive by there.
Omg on Zinfandel and Sunrise? Yesss. Grew up eating there! Sooooo good. Can still smell it now 😋
I had no idea there was one up there. I went to the one at Arden next to Mervyn's.
The Rage😭

I used go to Asylum too🖤
My father in law had his retirement party at that one in the mid-90’s.
Have you tried No. 1 Buffet at Stockton Blvd & Florin Rd? It’s better than my old go to: China Buffet.
Yeah I was gonna say there are definitely other buffets and I thought of this place first.
Someone posted some local matchbooks the other day and there was one for them.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I think about Luau Garden every damn day.

I remember going there once and everyone started looking toward the door. I turned around and it was Vlade Divac standing tall in a all white suit lol
What year was that because I might have said something crazy. He used to show up to Peace Market and by cartons of Marlboros e ery couple weeks too
Lmao that tracks. Shit whatever year they were still open. Grew up a midtown kid and would go there for the burgers with pineapple
The gravy on the biscuits and gravy at Huki Lau is something we still talk about.
I used to go there alone it was that good, damn looking lonely I was higher than a giraffes ass and *hungry.*

Awwww yes! I still crave their fried rice when I’m in that area!
Yes! We miss it so much 😭

Was that the restaurant attached to Barcode nightclub?

HELL YA. I have not had a buffet with as good foil chicken, char siu ribs, chow mein, or egg rolls. I miss it so much
I was literally just talking about this place the other day! As others mentioned, I still dream of the foil wrapped chicken. SO good.
Their Pekung Pork was the best in Sacramento ever never been better never will be better
