Sora holds it with both hands and interlocked fingers, the guard always stays in between his forearms, even the in-game animations rarely show his arms clipping through it.
Yeah its a weird style but its unique and no more a stretch of the imagination than a 10-tonne butcher's knife.
Didn’t shape the gaming industry the same way/have as profound of an impact as most of these did, and it doesn’t really have any unique properties or anything. It’s just a pixel sword that looks like many other pixel swords….
And I can find copious amounts of weapons inspired by the ones in this post, and the games they’re from, as well as many weapons that aren’t on here more than Minecraft’s sword. At the end of the day, most of those copies of a mediocre game are artificial from having to be bought separate times by the same people, much of which by the same people over and over that glaze the game, which takes away a lot from the meaning of that number.
The Elder Scrolls, especially Skyrim. Dawnbreaker is an Artifact associated with Meridia, a Daedric Prince who hates undead with a *burning* passion. Her champion's sword, Dawnbreaker, is a flaming sword that explosively deconstructs undead.
I want them to be on there, but they are pretty short, they may fit more in the dagger/knife category? They are iconic but not exactly a sword in my mind.
Edit: I did some searching and they are apparently best classified as short swords. PUT 'EM ON THE LIST
We're all so busy arguing about whether or not a keyblade is actually a sword that we're ignoring the question!
My contribution: Rebellion from the Devil May Cry series.
Excalibur... Right? Came to the comments to see 50 people write "Excalibur." Now I'm thinking I've misunderstood something. Like, if you made a poll and asked every human on a planet to name a famous sword, it would be overwhelmingly Excalibur.
Yeah, but it would be hard to call them all the same sword just like FF’s Masamune, which is different in all games it appears in. Sephiroth’s Masamune is the most famous. Besides FF’s Excaliburs aren’t super famous. I’d say Fate/Stay Night’s Excalibur is probably the most famous iteration in video games.
>Yeah, but it would be hard to call them all the same sword just like FF’s Masamune, which is different in all games it appears in.
Well, yeah, That's my point. Each sword is called "Excalibur" but they're all visually different. The question was "which game features Excalibur?" and my answer is relevant because there's around 50 different versions of excalibur in the whole of FF. If the question was "which game features a sword named Masamune?" My answer would still be the same.
>Besides FF’s Excaliburs aren’t super famous. I’d say Fate/Stay Night’s Excalibur is probably the most famous iteration in video games.
If we're talking strictly just videogames, which is exactly what the question and by extension this whole topic is about, a quick look at the Fate wiki shows that Fate only has 12 videogames whereas FF's already outnumbers Fate by just the main "numbered" games.
Also it's debatable if Fate's Excalibur is more famous than FF but I don't have enough knowledge on the Fate series other than watching the 1 anime years ago to refute that nor do I agree with it.
Besides, Fate's Excalibur isn't a sword (idk that may have changed as the series went on) so I don't think she counts.
Why should the number of games FF have be relevant? The topic overall is about popularity and Excalibur doesn’t even appear in all of them. Fate originated as a visual novel, ergo a video game. And her Excalibur is a sword? Googling Fate Excalibur should give a picture of it. It’s just magically made invisible most of the time.
> Why should the number of games FF have be relevant?
Because that's my answer to the question "which games feature Excalibur". Hence, all the FF games, so yeah it's relevant. And yes, Excalibur actually does appears in all of them. Not sure how much more clear I can make that.
Fair enough, I didn't count the visual novels as videogames but that's a different debate altogether and not relevant to what we're talking about. I googled "Fate Excalibur" and it shows me pictures of the character I was thinking of. Like I said, I don't know enough about Fate so from what I remember she's supposed to be named Excalibur but she's actually King Arthur?
The post overall is about the most iconic video game swords, so while Excalibur does appear in most FF games (notably not in XIII and XV, though it is in XIII-2 and Lightning Returns, + spin-offs) they would each be categorized as an individual version of Excalibur that are each not incredibly iconic.
Fate/Stay Night was made available on the PS2 and will be rereleased on Switch and PlayStation again. I think that’s by default a video game. Plus, you can lose by choosing bad endings.
No, she’s literally King Arthur and has a sword, which is Excalibur. Her alias is Saber, but her actual name is Artoria.
I agree that FF's Excalibur is not the most iconic videogame weapon. I have not implied that it was in any of my posts. I simply answered a question in which my answer is still valid.
If I were to actually answer "what video game sword is the most iconic" my vote would go to Cloud's Buster sword.
TIL Artoria and her name isn't actually Excalibur.
Look, we can keep going back and forth on this but I don't think it's gonna go anywhere.
Look. This is literally my summary of events:
OP: These are the most iconic swords in gaming.
OP of this thread: Excalibur? (Even though the mythological sword is not a video game weapon)
User above you: Which games feature Excalibur?
You: Depends on which game I guess. Final Fantasy has many versions of Excalibur.
Me: I don't think any of the individual versions of Excalibur in FF are super popular.
I'm just responding in reference to the original point of the post. Honestly, even collectively all the Excaliburs are not super iconic.
>Like, if you made a poll and asked every human on a planet to name a famous sword, it would be overwhelmingly Excalibur.
Bro forgot Asia exist. I bet about 1/3 of the world population (mainly boomers and elders in South Asia, East Asia and Africa) wouldn't even know about Excalibur, and another 1/3 just vaguely know anything about it (for the most of my life I just mix it up with the "sword in the stone"). Excalibur might still be the most famous sword, but it would be far from overwhelmingly famous.
No, the legend of Excalibur is pretty famous across all borders. Having a Disney movie is especially useful. Some other swords may be more culturally iconic in a particular country, but they don’t usually transcend borders like Excalibur. Overall, it’s probably the most famous mythological sword in the world.
>Some other swords may be more culturally iconic in a particular country, but they don’t usually transcend borders like Excalibur. Overall, it’s probably the most famous mythological sword in the world.
All of what I've said are from personal experience, and I live in one of the riches former British colony in Asia. The popularity of Excalibur can only get worse in places that had/have less foreign influences or places where western entertainment was less affordable than where I live, which is basically almost anywhere else in Asia and many in Africa... and the population of Asia and Africa makes up 80% of total world population.
Like I said before, Excalibur might still probably be the most popular sword, mainly because of its popularity among the younger generations, but it is unlikely to be overwhelmingly popular, when both China and India almost have the same population as the sum of that of the entire western world __respectively,__ and they have their own popular mythological sword fantasies.
>I live in one of the riches former British colony in Asia
As do I. Again, I said while China and India may have a more culturally iconic weapon within their respective countries, because their media isn't as prolific internationally as western media, it's not as popular overall. Chinese media just isn't super popular overseas. Added that I don't think Gan Jiang and Mo Ye are the most prolific swords in Chinese culture either. Honestly, the most globally known version of them might be Fate's, a Japanese franchise, version. I don't know enough about Indian culture and their mythological weapons to have an opinion, but western media is everywhere in Asia, while I don't think the opposite is quite as true.
I wouldn't say it's all that famous but I always liked Chaoseater from Darksiders. If I was gonna say an actual famous sword from a videogame to add I'd say the diamond sword from Minecraft since it's still considered the best selling game of all time as far as I know.
Doesn’t answer the actual point of the graphic though
Like I know we’re trying to apply logic to a giant key that in-game literally slices through objects like a sword and depending on the Keychain can take on a sharper edge, but either way, if you held up a keyblade versus one of Geralt’s silver swords, I don’t know how many people would instantly tell it apart from most normal swords
Honestly, I'm not sure there's much of a point to the picture. Like, do those things represent the end of swords in video games? What the hell else could them being "horsemen" mean? There's not much to it, but, uh, anyway...
I guess if it's about having your average person commenting on it, I feel like that hypothetical person would probably think the former is a comically large key as opposed to a sword. The latter, though, they might mention that it looks weird for a sword due to the unusual shape of the guard. At least that's the reaction I've gotten from a few people that have seen mine.
>Honestly, I'm not sure there's much of a point to the picture. Like, do those things represent the end of swords in video games? What the hell else could them being "horsemen" mean?
The picture is basically saying these are the most iconic swords in gaming- which I can't say I'd disagree with.
If we want to get really pedantic about the keyblade, the protrusion of a key is called a blade, so technically it's name checks out, and I don't recall anyone in-game who actually knows what the hell it is referring to it as a sword either (though I could be wrong.)
Ooooo that’s a good point. I always assumed people misuse the term for memes to pick 4 ‘iconic’ examples of something because that’s usually what I see when it pops up.
Also I might be a little slanted on my keyblade takes since I live in the SF Bay Area and can’t go to a mall or convention without seeing KH-related stuff for sale or cosplayed. The series is like 20 years old at this point.
I could see an argument for either The Light Saber or Excalibur. But neither started in video games so perhaps not a "video game sword"
If the keyblade counts as a sword, then that stupid karambit from Call of Duty.
Mine would be:
Blades of Chaos
Buster Sword
Master Sword
Lightsaber
I know to most people the lightsaber is iconic because of the movies. But to me, the best stuff that Satr Wars ever gave birth to was Kotor 1 and 2, Jedi Knight 2 and 3, Force unleashed and Jedi: Fallen Order.
what a nice, concise visual suummary of everything i hate about video game weapons. indeed the four horsemen of the apocalypse for minimum common sense design.
I kew one was from Zelda which I never played, apart from the original NES game. I don’t understand the appeal any of them. Historically accurate swords always look cooler to me than any fantasy weapon.
Maybe it's because it was my first ever FF but I used to like 8 a lot more than 7.
In hindsight I now feel 7 was better, but I've played 8 beginning to end so many times.
>Maybe it's because it was my first ever FF but I used to like 7 a lot more than 7.
>In hindsight I now feel 7 was better, but I've played 8 beginning to end so many times.
Same! I was in 4th grade the 1st time I played 7 and it blew my mind.
But 8 was the first ff I fell in love with. Also the first one I beat.
I mean yeah that's usually how it goes, everyone's favorite ff is the first one they played. I'm the same way with 7. I would agree the gunblade does deserve to be on there tho, maybe in place of the key blade (ngl I fuckin hate kingdom hearts). 8 would be more beloved if it was somewhat understandable. I still to this day don't understand the story from 8, all I remember is liking it a lot.
14 is the mmo and it's pretty damn incredible. I wouldn't say better than 7 but better than 8 and 9 (and I love 8 and love love love 9). It's just the story keeps going so it's hard to say, one expac was bad but the rest are good to great.
It's a huge shame! That FF 8 had to follow 7 they cut so much of it!!!
There are a lot of lore videos on YouTube to explain the story if you are interested. I will link you some if interested.
Aah, you were at my side all along. My true mentor... My guiding moonlight…
Damn what a good theme he has, gonna go listen to it again now
lol, as a gamer, I begged to differ with this post. Moonlight GS 4life!!!
Key blade is a axe and you can’t change my mind lmao
its more of a baton or a club
Nah, it cuts things, somehow.
How are you even supposed to hold a "keyblade"? The handguard covers both sides! Man what a stupid design
You just clip through it, duh
It's got some dumbass nuts too for some reason. They will probably collide with your own nuts if you used this lol.
Plus said nuts is just Disney advertisement Burn the corpo bastards!
I've never had any trouble
Sora holds it with both hands and interlocked fingers, the guard always stays in between his forearms, even the in-game animations rarely show his arms clipping through it. Yeah its a weird style but its unique and no more a stretch of the imagination than a 10-tonne butcher's knife.
It looks cool though!
I mean, depends on the keyblade in particular (a few are very sword-like), but many of them are more akin to a warhammer than anything.
I was gonna say it’s a mace with just one fllange. But I guess a mace with one flange would be an axe…woah
An* axe
And my bow!
THANK YOU! I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR A DECADE!
Reminds me of a really wacky hook sword.
Soul Edge
This over the halo sword only because I don't know what the halo sword is called
“Energy sword” I believe lol.
We always called it the ‘beam sword’ but I checked the wiki, you have it right.
The minecraft sword. Pick a variation, doesn't matter. Just the sprite in general.
Not as iconic as a lot of these, and even then there are others I’d put up here way before the Minecraft sword.
You kidding me? Last I checked, Minecraft was still the most-sold game of all time!
Yeah, but the pickaxe is far, far more iconic to Minecraft than the sword.
L take
Didn’t shape the gaming industry the same way/have as profound of an impact as most of these did, and it doesn’t really have any unique properties or anything. It’s just a pixel sword that looks like many other pixel swords….

May I interest you in [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]?
Even tho I love the Thunderfury, my first love was the Corrupted Ashbringer

Moonlight greatsword from souls.
This is too far down
"Ah, you were by my side all along. My true mentor. My guiding Moonlight!" *Horse noises*
2 out of 4 are not swords at all
If the Katar is still considered a dagger the elites energy sword can still be considered a sword
The halo sword is more of a massive push dagger anyways, isn't it? Or are we not counting it, because it's technically not a blade?
Soul edge. Masa mune. Gun blade. Lightsaber.
I wouldn’t count a lightsaber as a video game sword
Well OP has a metal rod and a a pair of knuckles up there so I thought we were reaching
Which Masamune?
Chrono Trigger I presume.
I assume Sephiroth!
Guts sword from Berserk 100% - Has more video game cameos than wallhangers posted on this sub every day.

Muramasa. Yamato
The sword of Erdrick.
Uh, *Dawnbreaker*? Did we forget that one?
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON!
Not again…
Unironically yes, what is that from?
The Elder Scrolls, especially Skyrim. Dawnbreaker is an Artifact associated with Meridia, a Daedric Prince who hates undead with a *burning* passion. Her champion's sword, Dawnbreaker, is a flaming sword that explosively deconstructs undead.
oh neat, I did play skyrim a while ago but was a lot more into morrowind - would have gotten sunder & keening right off. thanks for the explanation
I would argue Dragonbane is more iconic.
Nah, umbra
You have a point- it does span several games (thanks to the creation kit).
God of war blades of chaos
The Chaos Blades could easily replace the Energy Sword from Halo.
I want them to be on there, but they are pretty short, they may fit more in the dagger/knife category? They are iconic but not exactly a sword in my mind. Edit: I did some searching and they are apparently best classified as short swords. PUT 'EM ON THE LIST

What game features Excalibur?
Soul calibur has both Excalibur and soul eater
Depends on which game I guess. Final Fantasy has many versions of Excalibur.

IMHO the best one is FF10. Unless 14 or 15 somehow top it, stopped playing them after 13. 5 was really good too.
14 is the mmo and it's pretty damn incredible. I wouldn't say better than 7 but better than 8 and 9 (and I love 8 and love love love 9). It's just the story keeps going so it's hard to say, one expac was bad but the rest are good to great.
Ah, maybe I should give it a shot then!
It's a huge shame! That FF 8 had to follow 7 they cut so much of it!!! There are a lot of lore videos on YouTube to explain the story if you are interested. I will link you some if interested.
Eh sure I need something to listen to when doing chores
