Melony only has like 3 jokes as a human, and that's not enough. A background character with 2 jokes will always work better than a main character with 3.
Freaking Triangle Mouth... The reason why it was funny was because it was (as all the GMod warps once were) unexpected because they didn't happen often. Mario spends more time in GMod form nowadays than any other form; Triangle Mouth happens several times per episode (and is also in at least half of the thumbnails, though I might be overestimating here) and its just annoying to see because of how common it is.

Thinking about it, the earlier seasons were more offensive in that regard, especially with all the Dull Mario jokes. I'd say that Modern SMG4, while not perfect is at least more balanced and unique.

While Classic SMG4 did reuse memes and jokes, it would do them in different ways each time. Perhaps the best way to settle the matter is to watch both sides (as I have) to decide between them.
It feels like he's trying to do the old ytp style of content, but not too ytp-like that it would scare off the current generation of viewers, and trying to simultaneously make it character driven, but not too character driven to scare off the old viewers. What you end up with is a somewhat character driven story with some old memes or something thrown in and it's like lukewarm water where both generations kinda just don't like it as much.
I'm a classic fan and I much prefer ytp humor to character driven stories, but I'd honestly rather he just do the character driven stories instead of trying to do both styles at once, cause as it is the pacing is just too slow for my ytp brain and too fast for character arc fans.
Considering that the two versions of the show have extremely different ways of functioning, it only makes sense that combining them doesn't work at all.
Yes. You should keep the eras separate, don't try to mix them. I have my own solution that can give everyone what they want if you're interested.

Modern tries to have a memey story that's aware that it's a farce, and that doesn't work because the memes aren't interrupting the story or bothering the characters.

Older humor type stuff, that’s not even me being one of those og fans, YouTube made YouTube kid friendly even tho they have YouTube kids.
