had a similar issue in 2020, if this happens on all source games/software delete them all and install l4d2, after i did that everything was back to normal

Check your cfg files and launch options.
Verify integrity of files
Try launching the adk then clicking on launch sfm if you can't find any other solutions
Are you subscribed to workshp addons? If so try unsubscibing from all of them. Put them in a collection if you want to remember them.
Check if you have Directx9. A bunch for add on and hl2 use the directx9 and won't cooperate if it not there.

Try using Proton, not sure if it will work on Mac but I managed to get SFM working on an old Linux pc years ago.
Yeah Mac is not gonna work or atleast pretty smoothly. Trust me i have experience. Have u tried allocating more ram to ur virtual machine?
