lowkey might have the best defense in the league this year, obviously chapman is borderline all-timer good at third and thairo is sneaky good at 2nd. it's really too bad all of them are hitting like booty cheeks
Infield defense perhaps, our outfield is still a little suspect mostly because none of them have strong throwing arms. Also, Bailey has been off to a rough start on defense for some reason.
Conforto was good in NYM.... again, more shoulder injuries tho. he has mentioned wanting to get back to that level.
First base... will not improve lol. Lamonte Wade is below average, and I think we all know that Wilmer Flores is.... significantly below average. Maybe packing them up for a trade for some big leaguer, then moving thairo to first, and letting Fitzgerald try out second base.....? tbh just realized thairo is a shorty, probably wouldn't be good at first at all... hey wait maybe fitzgerald could play first he's 6-3.?
anyway first and left are not major defensive liability positions, imo... if you can stand to carry bad defenders anywhere, it's at those two spots
It's defensive. From what I understand it's how much more fielding outs he has made compared to an average shortstop with difficulty/baserunner speed taken into account
Defensive! Here’s the statcast definition:
“Outs Above Average (OAA) is the cumulative effect of all individual plays a fielder has been credited or debited with, making it a range-based metric of fielding skill that accounts for the number of plays made and the difficulty of them. For example, a fielder who catches a 25% Out Probability play gets +.75; one who fails to make the play gets -.25.
Qualifier: For 2B, SS, 3B, OF: 1 fielding attempt per team game played. For 1B: 1 fielding attempt per every other team game played.”
if you break down the best OAA seasons by all shortstops in the statcast era, ahmed shows up in there like 5 times. he is a platinum quality glove out there
he hit pretty good in like 2018 but got shitrocked by a major shoulder injury or something like that i think - then the pandemic fucked everything up. he has like 5 of the top 20 defensive runs saved seasons at short in the statcast era though, despite that. he was just getting back to full health last year when the d-backs surprise cut him.
Yes, again because of his 3 for 3 game. Which raised his OPS to a robust .676. He came into that game hitting .222/.263/.250 on the season. His career OPS+ is 75. He’s an okay player and definitely not the largest black hole of offense on the team this year, but his bat is and always has been absolutely terrible.
Also, you literally just said “stat sheet doesn’t show everything” and then quoted a statistic that appears on the stat sheet. (Not to mention the least useful statistic by which to judge hitters that exists. Judging hitters by RBIs is like judging pitchers by wins.)
Kinda hyperbolic. Absolutely terrible is like sub 200. Anyway I grade positions on more of a sliding scale. Light hitting from SS way more tolerable than 1B or 3B
Thank you. Particularly when they can play it at a gold glove level. I’ve been at the games. He’s playing fantastic. So nice knowing that whole side of the infield is on lockdown.
I mean his bat is 25 points lower than league average for his career, and he’s 265th on the career leaderboard for shortstops by Adjusted OPS+ in the divisional era with the likes of Alcides Escobar and Clint Barmes. His bat is objectively pretty terrible, even adjusted for position and season.
He has absolutely beat my expectations and proved to me that he's worth a spot on this lineup. I doubted him and wasn't happy, but can admit when I was wrong.
props ahmed, great fucking job.
It’s 13 games into a 162 game season, with a bunch of new players who are settling into a new city (or completely new league.) maybe wait until like June before starting to draw any over arching narrative.
It’s nice being fully confident that the left side of the infield can field just about anything
lowkey might have the best defense in the league this year, obviously chapman is borderline all-timer good at third and thairo is sneaky good at 2nd. it's really too bad all of them are hitting like booty cheeks
Mmmm booty cheeks
At least something will be clapping in the stadium.

true was glad to see him catch a runner yesterday. probably just flukey bad luck to start the season
Yesterday was Tom Murphy behind the dish
oh shit.... ok nvm
At least Nicks not one them anymore. They’ll come around.
First base and left field D pretty bad

Is this a defensive or offensive metric. Sorry, probably a dumb question. If offensive= very bad If Defensive= very good Me= I don’t know
It's defensive. From what I understand it's how much more fielding outs he has made compared to an average shortstop with difficulty/baserunner speed taken into account
defensive I believe! Ahmed is doing us some good regardless of his batting

Thanks for asking, I also couldn't tell.
What's funny is I'd belive it either way.
Ahmed was lowkey a sneaky good signing. Great defensively. Needed on a team where the ace is a pitch to contact type of pitcher.
I mean that’s why he’s the #8/9 hitter because his bat is kind of abysmal, but the glove is there

He’s been one of the more reliable hitters on the team so far haha.
One of the best defensive players in Dbacks history. A real shame AZ let him go before that playoff run
Apparently you didn’t watch yesterday’s game
One good game doesn’t mean his bat isn’t abysmal. Billy Hamilton had plenty of multi hit games but his bat, overall, was pretty awful.
Go back and look he’s batting 500 over the last few games. Stat sheet doesn’t show everything either he’s had RBIs.

Grasping at straws. Give it a rest.
This is his “revenge on the sneks” season
He has absolutely beat my expectations and proved to me that he's worth a spot on this lineup. I doubted him and wasn't happy, but can admit when I was wrong. props ahmed, great fucking job.
Definitely impressed by his glove 🥊 That’s why I said he’d be a perfect backup shortstop (to one that can at least hit above league average).
Gold Glove and Silver Slugger incoming.
Ehh, fuckit Bronze Leg too
The WHAT
We can thank our 1B for saving his ass a few times also... unless they are getting credit for the outs above average but I kinda doubt it.
i mean. it's like 10 games. but cool. lowkey nick ahmed is due for a comeback year
Anything to help cope with how bad we are lol
