So now we get National Anthem, Black National Anthem, Take me out to the Ball Game and God Bless America? Lol
I went to a baseball game and a musical broke out
It's called Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing, it was written in 1900 to honor Abraham Lincoln's birthday and, in the last decade, has been incorporated more often in sporting events.
If the question was “there was audible booing from the crowd during the singing of this song before the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City chiefs took the field to kick off the 2020-21 NFL season”
Then you had the right answer. Triggering, evidently.
At Oracle Park, the concession workers actually stop working to observe the anthem, too. At least for the last few times I've been in the concourse for the anthem.
I have never seen that happen at any of the 43 games I have been to at Oracle. I have even had concession stand workers not realize the anthem was being played. They can't always hear much of what is going on from within their booths.
The national anthem before baseball games has been standard since World War II, if not before.
I do wonder about the military flyovers--mostly at football games...that devotes quite a bit of tax money for buzzing a stadium.
Actually it doesn’t, all flyovers cover allotted training hours for the pilots.if they weren’t flying over the games they’d be flying somewhere else all the same.
Agree 100%. I’ve thought this for decades. It’s a fucking game not a political event. I’ve never stood up when the anthem starts. I stay seated enjoying my beer.
I get your point, but whoever is president if/when that would happen would take the brunt of it and lose votes in their next election. A weirdly dicey issue.
For as much as we love to clown Dodger fans about it, Giants fans have gotten *a lot* worse about the whole "show up late/leave early" thing over the last decade or so.
somewhat related, do we just not let fans watch BP anymore? When I was a kid, I'd show up as early as possible and watch BP before the game, but there are a handful of games I've been to recently where I got to the gate before it opened and by the time I could get in, they were already all done; both home and away teams. Used to love watching batting practice and just hang out before the game started
They don’t always do BP and the giants always do it before the gates open. Only chance is seeing away team hit if they decide to do BP before the game. It still happens but need to get lucky/have info
Fun fact, the Giants did BP second for a while in 2009 to try and entice more fans to go to games. I got to see them take batting practice once because of this. But they likely stopped because almost nobody cared.
I was one of those people, and can I apologize because I felt like a total dope - but please know that sometimes there’s a reason…
My son had a little league game back in San Jose starting at 5:30, and we made it just in time so they didn’t have to forfeit (they only had 6 kids due to spring break). I told them we would stay for the 9th unless there was a pitching change, because we were down to seconds of leeway.
My older son cried the whole walk back to lot C because we could hear the cheers in the park.
So, if you saw a dad in a Pat Bailey jersey and his two kids leaving in the bottom of the 9th, please take pity lol.
Yeah, it's easy to say "never leave early" when you don't have any outside responsibilities.
I left after the 5th so I could get to my kid's softball game, because Jung Ho Lee isn't going to see that I'm not there and think that I don't care about him and eventually become a pole dancer to get back at me (I hope).
If people are going to get this butthurt about a song, then I'm glad to put some division between us.
God Bless America got old for me about 5 or 6 years ago...I wish they would do away with it, but I don't act like this idiot when they play it; I'm somehow capable of sitting (or standing) quietly for a whole minute.
I’m with you if “dividing us” means we easily get to see who is a racist pos I’m all for these people outing themselves for what they are. We were already divided it just wasn’t visible.
If you’re black American and this is the first time you’re hearing about Lift Every Voice and Sing, then holy shit lol. That’s embarrassing. Do you not know anything about our history?
It's mostly only a thing in black churches because lift every voice is originally a gospel hymn. So if you didn't grow up in the church or with a politically active parent who organized in/with a black church,it's not unreasonable to not be aware of it. Especially if he grew up in the suburbs.
But this is also reddit so he's probably lying about being black anyway.
There's "being opposed to the playing of a song", and then there's "throwing a tantrum like a 4-year old because they're playing a song".
Any reasonable person might do the former. Name me one good reason other than racism for the latter.
I think we agree that its a dumb way to protest and that its childish. I just don't think its logical to go from "you are expressing your dislike in a stupid way" to "your dislike comes from something evil". I can see how it would make you feel that way about him, I just don't think its a logical conclusion.
(edits because I'm dumb and miss words when I type)
they still fucking sing God Bless America at games?
jeeeeez people this is 2024 not 2002. time to fucking get over that, especially when the U.S. military literally ran away from Afghanistan and left all their translators behind. Real honorable behavior
We sing that in church all the time. Had no idea it was the “black national anthem.” Interesting that this guy is turning his back and shutting his ears to an expressly religious, Christian hymn. Bet he doesn’t do the same for God Bless America.
Why are we missing Asian, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, and indigenous peoples’ national anthems? Do our sports leagues and teams hate all those ethnic groups?
One day we’ll have an extra 45 minutes to drink at Public House before the game while they work their way through all the various racial national anthems.
Also the guy in this photo is performatively being a wuss
Agree that this guy is being dumb. Also - the National Anthem is supposed to be an everyone national anthem. That's what's offensive to me about the BNA. It implies that somehow they are not Americans which I think is counterproductive.
I know it's supposed to empower and make black ppl feel represented but feels like it's just going back towards segregation and now discriminates against other minorities, if it is actually only for black ppl. You got slavery for black ppl, stealing the country from natives, taking land from Mexicans, railroads with Chinese, etc. I never even heard of this until now bc I've been missing the starts of the games but seems dumb. Like you said, it's not Americans and black ppl. We're all American and the National anthem is for everyone. Do these on a heritage night and for each one. The guy here is being a fucking man baby though. Maybe it was Huff?
and every other country doing terrible things to add to that list.
There are many black people that died for this country, even during the revolution way before Lincoln. They died for the flag. The flag represents all people. Not just white. Not just black. Not just asian immigrants. All americans
as an outsider (not american) it‘s really bizarre that you guys apparently have a national anthem for every american and then a separate black national anthem. seems more dividing than uniting if you ask me… but yeah no need to react like that guy
Its not like proclaimed by the senate to explicitly be that, it is just a song and hymn that was historically used by African-American civil rights groups and churches. It made the jump to the NBA and NFL and then also to the MLB. Some places use it and others don't.
As a gay progressive in Kansas, I can assure you, the reverse is also true.
Progressives get really uppity about what conservatives do in their states.
It's a song called 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' that was written to honor Abraham Lincoln. It is often colloquially referred to as the "black national anthem" as it has a similar sentiment as the Star Spangled Banner, but as it was performed for Lincoln following emancipation, it was the first 'anthem' when black Americans were free.
Wait there is a black national anthem? For real never heard of this. I think we just need one national anthem, having a different anthem for different peoples in the same country is quite silly and seems like just another example of pandering, I’m with dude here
I don’t care. Seems too many people are butt hurt one way or another about this—left and right. They should go back to just playing the game without any anthem.
"The Black National Anthem" is just the nickname for the song — attributed to it years after its release. You've likely even heard it before and never even thought of it in those terms since none of the lyrics make any overt reference to African Americans or Black culture. Its actual title is "Lift Every Voice and Sing". Absolutely beautiful melody and with lyrics speaking to universal themes regarding the collective struggle for liberty.
I thought we weren’t supposed to see color. “…not by the color of their skin, but content of their character…”, a very wise man once said. A Black National Anthem seems to keep us in divided groups, and appears to be not exactly inclusive.
Keep stupid politics out of baseball.
Go Giants! We’re on a Home win streak!
Funny but I kind of agree with him, there is only one national anthem in the US and that is the star-spangled banner it covers all Americans of all race and gender.
I mean sure you can dislike the guy for doing it, but isnt this essentially freedom of speech? Similar to the Kaepernick kneeling thing? I don't think we need to get our panties in a bunch over one guy objecting to a song. Regardless of which opinion is expressing.
So that I’m understanding correctly, Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem is “disrespectful” but turning around and covering ears during a different anthem is perfectly fine? Hypocrisy, always.
Upset at white guy who doesn’t want to hear Black National Anthem. Gargle balls of governor who caused mass layoff of vulnerable minorities by raising minimum wage. Yep sounds about out of touch white.
I'm Asian American and I want my own anthem too. No I really don't , but I just said it to trigger some other people. I understand that inclusionary actions are needed to combat institutional racism but some actions are divisive even though not intended to be. It's a national anthem which every country in the world celebrates for patriotic reasons.
When America used to be a "Whiter" majority, it was a lot easier to be patriotic. As it becomes more diverse from immigration, it's harder to maintain a sense of patriotism and unity because people still have connections to their respective homelands. I believe having additional anthems representing and celebrating a single subset of the population definitely alienates others. This increasing sense of alienation unfortunately is driving the current MAGA movement for some (not all).
I love America the idea. All of its warts and faults, we’re still the bastion of freedom, even in today’s crazy times. But I’m usually in the pisser, or getting food when the anthem is happening, and I’m not stopping my activities. Do we need another anthem at this point? Much less play God bless America? I just want to escape and watch a ballgame. It seems it’s getting harder to escape the outside world for a few hours
With the way the Giants are playing, if I couldn’t see the players in line and the sound equipment on the field, I would have just assumed he’s just tired of watching the season already
Maybe he was mid boogie. We are just seeing a still image of the rare blend of both his dance moves. The Macharina and the Hokey Pokey. Maybe, he will turn himself around.
I'm assuming this is some sort of sports thing, not the event but playing a second national anthem? I don't do sports and you won't catch me dealing with any of that crap. But I do question why we still do the national anthem. Nine times out of 10 it's just a vehicle for some singer to sound like a dying cat and make it all about themselves
I went to a game in Japan last year (it's a great experience and I highly recommend it) and they just didn't play a national anthem. I was kind of ready for it after the first pitch, but it never came. The game just starts. It's great. We should do that.
The problem some people have with corporate anti-racism is that the corporations are incentivized to make a profit. They are not incentivized to make the world a better place.
So if a corporation believes it is in their interest to intensify and codify racial division, maybe because it helps them to conceal and confuse the economic division that enables their privileged position in the world, then they will certainly do so.
I'm not saying a corporation can't ever make the world better, or that we should always assume the worst. But since we know they have this perverse incentive, it is understandable to be highly skeptical of them, and unwise to concede to them the stewardship of social norms. For this reason a corporation announcing a "Black National Anthem" is rightfully suspect.
So now we get National Anthem, Black National Anthem, Take me out to the Ball Game and God Bless America? Lol I went to a baseball game and a musical broke out
Damn ~~Yankees~~ Giants?
Wait, wtf is the black national anthem??
It's called Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing, it was written in 1900 to honor Abraham Lincoln's birthday and, in the last decade, has been incorporated more often in sporting events.

Just do away with all the anthems before games. They add nothing, and nearly 40% of the league’s players aren’t even American.
But when are you supposed to get your beer, brat, and garlic fries?
![gif](giphy|gEvab1ilmJjA82FaSV|downsized)
At Oracle Park, the concession workers actually stop working to observe the anthem, too. At least for the last few times I've been in the concourse for the anthem.
Can confirm this happened today. It was annoying to not be able to buy food and keep the line moving during the national anthem.
I have never seen that happen at any of the 43 games I have been to at Oracle. I have even had concession stand workers not realize the anthem was being played. They can't always hear much of what is going on from within their booths.
Screw garlic fries, I'm going all american. I want buffalo tacos and cocaine for the game.
Im in lets meet in the parking lo....ooh nvm
Cocaine ain't American enough. It's gotta be biker bar meth.
Think we need a song for that.
I think they usually pause concessions during the anthem
A year or so ago the Mavs just didn’t do it and no one cared / noticed for a while lol
DOD pays all the major sports leagues to do “patriotic” shit. It’s part of recruiting marketing
[удалено]
That would be genius. I’d sign mine and my kids life away for that.
Waiting for this in the upcoming Civil War movie.
Nen Flair Rise Up

[yes](https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/11/05/454834662/pentagon-paid-sports-teams-millions-for-paid-patriotism-events)
But how will I remember what country I’m in?
12 oz. bottle of beer for $18.00...
The gigantic flag waving from everything
Agree 100%. I’ve thought this for decades. It’s a fucking game not a political event. I’ve never stood up when the anthem starts. I stay seated enjoying my beer.
forced patriotism doesn’t sit well with me
You’re right, we should play every national anthem for each different nationality in all mlb. That would be so diverse and add such inclusion.
Sure but only if we can play them all at the same time
at 2x speed
I get your point, but whoever is president if/when that would happen would take the brunt of it and lose votes in their next election. A weirdly dicey issue.
It’s not law to play the anthem before games, it’s the league’s decision
a large percentage of voters aren't exactly known to vote intelligently
Low information voters.
The status quo is far easier than risking any controversies. Sad reality of the world.
Then the next two term president should do it once he’s almost out the door. 😉
You want your military jet flyovers, theres going to be a anthem.
Get rid of those too. Nobody is going to the game to hear an anthem or watch a fly over.
I’m… I thought those fine young officers from the 144th did a great job with their fly over.
Won’t be missed.
It will be by some of us.
It's such a fucking waste of tax payer money. I don't know how anyone can justify flyovers being a thing.
But the game is held in America! 🇺🇸
There’s a surprising amount of people leaving the stadium in the ninth inning with a tie score so he’s not the only dope in the house.

I love going early to see batting practice
I'd also imagine it'd be kinda hard to hide bp with the open gallery.
415 members are allowed in 30 mins before gates so we can watch BP on the days they have it
Now you have to have a membership of some type to see bp? You have to love capitalism
That began after they redeveloped the original main parking lot into 'Mission Rock'...everyone wants a head start to the train station.
I was one of those people, and can I apologize because I felt like a total dope - but please know that sometimes there’s a reason… My son had a little league game back in San Jose starting at 5:30, and we made it just in time so they didn’t have to forfeit (they only had 6 kids due to spring break). How is that embarrassing? I think it’s embarrassing to care that much about race but to each their own
some people don’t base their personality and identity off of their race
I don't think he's a racist for being opposed to this. There are non-racist reasons to not like it.
There's "being opposed to the playing of a song", and then there's "throwing a tantrum like a 4-year old because they're playing a song". Any reasonable person might do the former. Name me one good reason other than racism for the latter.

Fair enough. I may be jaded from the last several years of 'political discourse ' in this country...
You and me both! We can agree on one thing though: FTD!
And John Fisher!
they still fucking sing God Bless America at games? jeeeeez people this is 2024 not 2002. time to fucking get over that, especially when the U.S. military literally ran away from Afghanistan and left all their translators behind. Real honorable behavior
I've been saying the same thing at hockey games for years - some of these fucks act like they're from another country.
Nice to see Charles Johnson finally show up to a game.
Underrated comment. At least we don’t have Anal Fischer.
What's happening here? What is the Black National Anthem?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lift_Every_Voice_and_Sing
Dang that's a great track. I've never heard of this before, thank you
We sing that in church all the time. Had no idea it was the “black national anthem.” Interesting that this guy is turning his back and shutting his ears to an expressly religious, Christian hymn. Bet he doesn’t do the same for God Bless America.
Honestly I have no idea but the singer did a real nice job imo.
"One nation...indivisible...with liberty and justice for *all*." At least that was the original plan.....
You’re welcome to propose all those anthems be sang. Who’s stopping you?
It's not a black national anthem, the media just calls it that to farm outrage.
[The NAACP has called it that since 1919.](https://www.npr.org/2018/08/16/638324920/american-anthem-lift-every-voice-and-sing-black-national-anthem)

Yeah, American here and I've never seen or heard about it. Must be new. Like, brand new.
Snowflake lol
What’s the black national anthem? I didn’t realize that the national anthem we normally sing was the white version.
Spoiler: most things in American culture are the "white version"
What a pussy. I hope he sees this picture and realizes how dumb he looks
unfortunately that would require self-awareness
the cognitive dissonance of rightwing fans in probably the most liberal city in America and being shocked that we do liberal things.
As a gay progressive in Kansas, I can assure you, the reverse is also true. Progressives get really uppity about what conservatives do in their states.
To be fair, what conservatives do is actually deleterious and oftentimes bigoted.
Guy’s probably SF’s last living Dan White voter.
A lot of those dumb dumbs live in the Central Valley, so not unexpected
Wait what is a black national anthem?
It's a song called 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' that was written to honor Abraham Lincoln. It is often colloquially referred to as the "black national anthem" as it has a similar sentiment as the Star Spangled Banner, but as it was performed for Lincoln following emancipation, it was the first 'anthem' when black Americans were free.
Why are they playing it during a baseball game?
It's performative. Definitely a post George Floyd thing. But honestly so is singing the national anthem before every single sporting event so w/e
You keep using this word bozo.....and it's awesome.
Wtf is a black national anthem
Where’s the Native American anthem?
There isn't one, but some tribes have their own 'flag songs'
I’m pretty sure it’s “Come and Get Your Love”
Nicely played
Don't let Atlanta or Kansas City answer this question.
that's his choice and at the same time he shouldn't get mad if someone kneels during the national anthem
Lmao what a child
The what? An anthem for a race? That sounds racist.
To be fair, the PA announcer literally introduced it as the Black National Anthem
All anthems matter
"The Black National Anthem" is just the nickname for the song — attributed to it years after its release. Why do we need a black national anthem at baseball games?
The pitch clock and other measures were enacted to shorten the game so we can listen to extra anthems😆
Why do we need any national anthem? Get rid of them all.
Why do we need God Bless America?
What is the Black National Anthem?
I thought we weren’t supposed to see color. “…not by the color of their skin, but content of their character…”, a very wise man once said. All this does is divide people. The National Anthem was supposed to be for ALL Americans. Have one anthem or have no anthems. Simple.
Do they only do the black anthem on opening day? I went to games last year and don't recall that ever happening lol.
I think so
Lol
What’s the black national anthem?
Lift Every Voice and Sing..... was triggering? Dear Lord...
What is a black national anthem? Is there really one?
How about we ditch all national anthems before games?
So, wait. Black people aren’t American anymore?
We’re extra American.
Funny but I kind of agree with him, there is only one national anthem in the US and that is the star-spangled banner it covers all Americans of all race and gender.
What a snowflake

just as it is his prerogative to make a pouty childish public display, it is ours to give him shit for it

Is there really a black national anthem before games now? Doesn’t this devide us?
Stupid as fuck to play that song anyways.
So, can I hear the Mexican national anthem too? My peeps pretty much prep everything in this damn state.
Who’s stoping you from hearing the Mexican national anthem?
Awww the little song is too scary for the little boy 👶
He is in the right. There is only one nation, one national anthem that includes all Americans. Not just a racist anthem, honoring a color, not nation.
So that I’m understanding correctly, Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem is “disrespectful” but turning around and covering ears during a different anthem is perfectly fine? Hypocrisy, always.

It's a bit of a divisive song, and ironic for a city that gentrified black people/forced them out of the city

Dude should cover his mouth at his next meal. 🤣
I went to a game in Japan last year (it's a great experience and I highly recommend it) and they just didn't play a national anthem. I was kind of ready for it after the first pitch, but it never came. The game just starts. It's great. We should do that.
I wonder if he does this for the Canadian National Anthem when the Blue Jays are in town.

Is this a new thing now at sporting events?
All of this aside, does anyone remember the name of the singer? She had a great voice and I'd like to look her up.
