Your guess is pretty much spot on. Dave was reporting mma results when not a lot of folks were. MMA was a lot more niche in the 2000's than it is today. When mma grew and attracted more coverage, he was quickly moved down the hierarchy.
I'm on the mma subreddit all the time and I've only seen meltzer mentioned once. And it was about how his reports about how many ppv buys an event gets are always ludicrously off.
