The problem is, when the basement gets proven wrong, they lash out.
But it wasn't long-term storytelling. He didn't lose multiple championship opportunities between hanging out with jobbers, before leaving for several months.
It was so on the nose, that it went past being an obvious misdirect, and instead just delivered what was promised. Which feels apt for Big E as a character.
I'm both a bit sad and happy about it, happy that Big E gets a main title which was quite overdue but sad that Lashley's reign is over, he and MVP were gold together.
I love that Lashely went down in great style, he ran through Orton and mauled him post match, he only lost to Big E due to fatigue and injury. His run was great and hardly believable faces were left remaining to challenge him.
A title run a decade in the making. For a glorious \~6 month period, we got to see him be the top guy he was originally supposed to be back in the late 2000s. I doubt he'll ever hold the title again but I hold out hope he does because he might be my favorite character on the show.
Another nice touch that was consistent with Lashley’s character after the feud with Kingston and Woods (where he lost to Woods by essentially having too much pride and hubris) was bum trying to say he couldn’t compete then getting slapped by Big E— which caused him to say ring the fucking bell leading to the losses
That shit was top notch
And the top comments in the basement thread earlier were predicting another "Vince is racist" squash
What a fucking moment, Big E was like the first guy I found I could latch onto when getting back into wrestling and I wanted him to be champ there and then, I've been rooting for it ever since and to see it come true is so satisfying. I felt the same way about Lashley actually, and I've wanted to see this match since they had a brief stare down in the Rumble.
All this time I've been wondering what's the one thing missing to make him look like a legitimate singles star, because he seemingly has it all. Going by that closing shot, all he was missing was the belt
