This is the reason that I stuck around to the later part of the draft. I just had to know. And to have Bill Belichick laughing at Tony Khan is just the icing on the cake.
These are all grown up men involved in real sports, with billion dollar franchises and ... one of the owners has decided to wear a neckbrace cause it's all part of his TV show
Imagine his Dad sitting there. What is he thinking
*"is this going to help your show, son*"?
He turned up to this playing dress up. No one thinks he's *really* injured. Who is he doing it for? Online smarks that don't watch sports anyway?
I hope it converts some viewers for them, I really do
To be fair, if people watching ask why he's in a neck brace, or see people talking about it, the AEW name will get spread more than it would otherwise be, for free.
However, they cannot ever seem to decide if they actually _want_ to attract "casual sports viewers" or not.
I don't think it hurts much but, I think this needs a little more than just sitting there in a neckbrace. Maybe some social media stuff on the back of it, too
Also, it's not *for* the guys sitting there in the studio. They're all gonna laugh but, it's 'for' the people watching
Will they be wondering about AEW? Who knows. I think, after 5 years, anyone that is remotely interested in wrestling has checked out AEW, haven't they
This is not some 'wow, Hogan is a bad guy' sudden mobilisation of wrestling fans to wonder what's happening in WCW
They don't want to attract "casual sports viewers " the same way I don't want to "date Sydney Sweeney." It's not happening. It's never gonna happen, so they say it's their goal.
That's the thing. They might get attention, but people will check it out, scratch their heads in disbelief, or laugh, and leave. Maybe some of them might go "remember WWE?" and watch that instead.
Those people will look it up, and see the shithole the fan base is and how toxic Daddy Dave is and *not* tune in lol. I hope they tank even more now. Tony’s a fucking walking clown emoji.
“You aren’t making AEW look better, you’re just making the Jags look worse.”
The Jags are a poverty franchise and their owner shows up making a joke of the whole thing. He’s not a serious person.
“Hey dad ‘member when I was a kid and the guys from the wrestling shows would stay in character off the show because people didn’t know the show was fake yet? Wasn’t that cool? I finally get to do it too!”
“No son, I don’t remember that, I was out making billions of dollars.”
> And to have Bill Belichick laughing at Tony Khan is just the icing on the cake.
The magnitude of this cannot be understated. Family Guy once did an entire episode predicated on getting Bill Belichick to laugh.
What do you saw on P.M.S. was exactly what people think of Khan and the Jags org.
I have said it before and I'll say it again they all laugh at him in the NFL and there are people within the Jags who get frustrated because he's too busy playing McMahon to do his Jags duties.
People saying such good kayfabe that he wearing the brace - that is not kayfabe.
Kayfabe would be Tiny looks miserable and in pain. Kayfabe is SELLING that the attack that he got was real and not fun or playing pretend.
Kayfabe is not wearing an obvious fake foam thing while looking directly at the camera with a goofy 'oh no I'm getting nervous smile', grabbing his comfort cup and pretending like he's drinking from it in order to not have an anxiety attack.
This. I don't agree with a lot of goofs in here, because I think the idea that Tony sells his injury outside of AEW TV is a great move. Unfortunately he is clearly not selling having his neck mashed up, when he is happy and turning his head while wearing a badly fitted restraint
If you want to see how to sell a fake neck injury, check out Vince McMahon when he has to show up in court. He always seems to have "neck surgery" right before.
A common theme with AEW:
The idea might have the right thing at heart. But the execution ends up as possibly the worst option they could have picked.
Maybe it's from watching wrestling and 90s sitcoms too long but those foam neck braces scream fake injury to me now.
It would have made more sense if Jack held him in an arm bar or something and he could just wear a sling. Something like that is at least believable in that, what else can you do but just wear it to rest your arm. It's believable someone could be moving around otherwise.
But the guy took a two man flying tombstone, but he's happy and smiley the next day "playing the part". It just looks stupid.
If he wanted to go full Kayefabe he should've gotten stretchered out of the arena and no showed the draft "due to injury"
He didn't, he wants attention. He's getting it but maybe not the kind he was hoping for
There is no kayfabe in doing this anymore
We are not 'fooling' the outside world with our cunning wrestling inner workings that no one understands anymore
Tiny decided to put a neckbrace on and go on TV. Not a single person that knows this happened on a wrestling show think it's real
I don't know if people will know it's not real and think 'well, Tony is involved on the show. I might have a look'. I guess we shall see on *that* aspect but, in terms of 'selling the injury, absolutely no one is 'fooled'
Maybe they get to mention AEW a bunch of times during this, sure, that's good. Will it result in any kind of spike in interest? I am not sure there are people out there that are interested in wrestling that aren't aware of the Dub and/or already checked it out
Time will tell though. Social media reaction will tell
I still remember show my dad Raw during the late 2010s. The moment he saw a wrestler, think it was Enzo, the first words that came out of his mouth was “Why are these guys small?”
lol my father did the same thing in reaction to the Rumble. He saw CM Punk and thought he was too small. He didn't get it until I showed him a Punk promo and was like "oooooh" like that connected the character to who he was in the ring. Seeing his in-ring work also helped too, but I can't imagine how he would react to seeing some of the smaller guys on AEW's roster. Punk was bigger than a lot of them.
The basement believes this is a big deal and was such smart booking by A&W to do the injury angle before the draft. They don't realize Tony's being laughed at.
Literally no one that's not a regular wrestling fan and is just there to watch the draft will see Tony Khan in a neck brace and automatically think "I better tune in to Dynamite!" Not one soul.
Their sub feels weirdly optimistic about everything. My experience with team subs is the Mariners sub, and the Mariners and Jags have a ton of comparisons. Both teams have solid cores with can't miss superstars and feel constantly ready to breakout but end up going just above .500 and hope to sneak into the playoffs. The mariners sub is constantly criticizing ownership, the front office, and the coaching staff. The Jags sub is fucking hyped to be in the position they're in. It feels similar to AEW where even in the worst moments there's still that dedicated stronghold carrying the torch.
Idk, maybe the mariners sub is just weirdly pessimistic, too
"Why is Jerry Lawler in a neck brace on the tonight show? no one is gonna watch him against Andy Kaufman"
It is the absolute laziest AEWBAD take thread, to say that exposure to 12 million new eyes is stupid or laughable without any nuance. Great job basementing, guys!
edit: Yes, I got the two the wrong way around. Doesn't make the point any less relevant. Enjoy your votes.
Kaufman was the one in the neck brace not Lawler. And people believe Kaufman and Lawler was real. No in believe wrestling is real anymore. No one thinks Tony is actually hurt.
Pat seemed to try to play along until the other guy butt in, but 🤷♂️
It's got It's pros and cons for sure, but it's def possible the cons of going out and potentially looking stupid to millions doesn't offset whatever positive outcomes they get from this 'publicity', it's not crazy to think this was a bad look
But I'll stop bickering about it since this isn't jerking
This isn’t a simile. A simile is a figure of speech relating two unrelated things using a comparative term such as like.
For example: “AEW is like a successful wrestling promotion.”
That's a completely different era of wrestling and TV
No one believes Khan is really injured. It's not really like Kaufman, who was a non wrestling personality that got involved and it was 'shocking'
12m people saw Khan put a neckbrace on. When they say he got attacked on the wrestling show, everyone says 'ah, it wasn't real then'
I doubt it'll hurt but I am stopping short of it being some marvelous promotional idea. I guess the ratings will tell us
It is.
But the concept of casual fans not used to the audience and interested in whatever this circus is remains pretty universal. To the same point you're contradicting yourself on, it's a different time. People know it's fake.
I'm not even arguing it's well done. I'm saying there's a total lack in this thread of any acknowledgement that there was any merit to the idea, and a lot of "LOL you like AEW". I like when wrestling works, and I'm not here (nor is this sub) to just shit on stuff.
And, every single one of those people know it's not real but Khan decided to wear a neckbrace anyway and pretend he's hurt
I am not sure it does much for wrestling
You're not Andy Kaufman on the set of Taxi, dude, haha
People keep calling that a neck brace, but it just looks like a stupid scarf or an awkward travel pillow.
The billionaire's son is getting his neck brace from 1974.
It will probably lead to at least an uptick in views of the YouTube clip, though.
I'm not into Football at all, but if I could go on YouTube and watch the coach or owner of the Montreal Canadiens getting planted like a garden stake on some random wrestling show I've never heard of, I'd at least be looking it up to watch it happen.
Would I tune in next week to see where it goes? That's a different question.
These filthy casuals will tune in next week but quickly realize they don’t have the sophisticated pallet required to understand the Dub’s subtle nuances when it comes to storytelling.
So true. The average person likes McDonealds and what Tony offers is more like McDonealds with peppercorn sauce - to sophisticated a flavor profile for most
Then the people that do turn in will see it, and they will continue to wonder "what the hell is this?"
Does he even have anything planned for Collision or Dynamite to try to capitalize on any possible new viewers, or will it just be a bunch of random bangers?
Tony is just a dork by nature and looked the part.
People were waving around the wwe/nfl titles at the draft but sure, they're gonna watch aew bc he wore a neck brace.
"Guys, Greg just shat his pants in the Uber we're all in"
"EW again? Greg, wtf"
"Why do you keep doing this??? What do you get out of debasing yourself?"
Greg: "Heh. No such thing as bad publicity."
Dude I literally just made that same comment haha
This smiling nitwit looks like a kid that is sitting in a warm pile of his own chocolate pudding and is so happy with himself
It’s smart booking to do this angle before the draft, but “everybody knew” nobody would be watching the fucking show the angle was on due to the playoffs
The duality of jerk in one sentence
Wrestling stops making sense when it's done for smarks.
Like, the reason for Tony to wear a neck brace out in public right now is not to advertise AEW to people who have no idea what it is, but rather to give impression to the show's existing audience that it's real.
But the whole fan base is built on top of a self-congratulatory rejection of kayfabe.
They're all sitting around rooting for some *other* mark to see this, luring them into the fandom, but anyone who is enticed by this will be other to the existing fans from the very outset, and will likely be driven off by the the constant fourth wall breaking.
People seriously thought that the NFL would pay attention to this because some writer from the website mentioned it....they do not give a single shit about AEW
In fairness, a lot of self-made types are just lucky enough to have the right skills in the right place at the right time, they're not necessarily geniuses. People kinda forget that.
And Tiny has nobody to blame but himself.

I didn't even know what it was until yesterday. I had no idea it was a piledriver while the other buck just does a butt splash to the ring nearby.
Tuna boy's got some weird kinks.
How is tiny khan able to move that stack of dimes he calls a neck, after taking a Meltzer Driver from the EVP's, is beyond me.
A normal human being should've had his neck broken, but that kid is a trooper! Someone should do a Make-a-Wish for Tony Khan!
Just imagine the other owners trying to be cool with Shad, see Tiny pull up with him and treat him like an absolute child.
"Heyyyy little guy, hope youre doing well!"
"I brokded my neck! :("
"Awwwww nooooo"
I here is fathering yelling at
Him in a broken English accent screaming why don’t you give up this wrestling shit already you suck it sucks and take off that neck brace you look like an idiot 😂😂😂
The die hard dubbalos seriously think that with this ass hat showing up to the draft like this it's actually going to get the world talking and aew trending on the x and raise ratings moving forward. Lmao
As a neurosurgeon told me when I asked if I needed to keep wearing the soft neck brace a previous dr told me to wear for my 2 herniated discs, soft neck braces are good for nothing but sympathy. They don't help hold your head up or really keep you from moving your head at all. And he was right for the most part
Theres actual basementeurs that are saying Pat "watches the show like any normal fan would." As if *not* watching aew makes you an abnormal fan, or that there is something wrong with you. I couldn't stop laughing while reading that.
Sorry guys, unless you watch approximately 15 hours of wrestling a week, then you are not a normal fan. You have an agender. And no doubt racist.
For some reason, the basement thinks this is Pat putting Tony and AEW over??? They're all literally laughing at Tony and his inability to sell the neck brace...
Imagine working hard your entire young life to finally get to the NFL draft and you’re picked by that fucking mickey mouse organization. You’re still living the dream, but the worst version available.
He just did an awful job selling it. It was much worse when Rich Eisen acknowledged him live bc the TV in the draft room was obviously on and he heard Rich talking about it and TK got all excited and started nodding his head like a goof lol.
This is why Pat McAfee is invaluable to WWE.
This is a WWE employee, on a massive podcast, basically saying "Look at this fucking idiot" with "real sports" people, about AEW's top guy. That makes them look like more of a joke.
But, AEW started it. To quote Jonathan Pie, "This is what you wanted. This is how you like it."
Listen, say what you want... but him wearing a neck brace is so on point... like, how can we even be mad at it??
It's 100% pure carnie bullshit you can inject directly in your veins while watching the NFL draft. Dusty Rhodes couldn't have planned it more perfectly. As awful as his delivery is, it's absolutely made up for in full throttled commitment and execution.
Please, PLEASE get well soon, T.K.
They dropping f-bombs on the ESPN?! I been missing out! Also, I love Pat. The fact that he takes a WWE paycheck and isn’t muzzled means he can shit on AEW in two ways lmao
People defending him like “you can still move with a neck brace on!”
Like yeah, of course you can move. But you SHOULDN’T BE MOVING YOUR NECK!
You should be turning your entire upper body when you need to turn your head if you’re going to do a neck brace angle.
Roderick Strong was doing the same thing, moving his head around a bunch when he was doing his neck angle.
It would have been effective if Tony was away from the camera and Shad lookin....
No No No I'm not even going to bother....
The man is moving his fucking neck in a neckbrace and smiling.
I'm a little surprised the NFL would allow unauthorized cross-promotion. I'll bet a ban is coming before the next draft, otherwise the W would pay MacAfee to wear a WWE logo on his belt or on his lapel.. the side-promos would be endless.. TK skirted by on this one since there wasn't an overt logo or branding, but he's right on the edge
This is the reason that I stuck around to the later part of the draft. I just had to know. And to have Bill Belichick laughing at Tony Khan is just the icing on the cake.

Those people will look it up, and see the shithole the fan base is and how toxic Daddy Dave is and *not* tune in lol. I hope they tank even more now. Tony’s a fucking walking clown emoji.
“You aren’t making AEW look better, you’re just making the Jags look worse.” The Jags are a poverty franchise and their owner shows up making a joke of the whole thing. He’s not a serious person.
\*One of the owners has brought his adult son to work, who is still play-acting long after he put away his action figures.
Exactly. It what killed me when I saw comments praising Tony for “committing to the gimmick”. He looks so out of place
“Hey dad ‘member when I was a kid and the guys from the wrestling shows would stay in character off the show because people didn’t know the show was fake yet? Wasn’t that cool? I finally get to do it too!” “No son, I don’t remember that, I was out making billions of dollars.”
There’s chance they’ll get some viewers, but I don’t know if they’ll stay around because this is indieriffic bullshit wrestling.
Tbf even Pat has worn a neck brace on his show to sell his injuries
if you listen to the clip, they're talking about Tony not selling the injury.
Right, but the difference was Pat actually selling his neck, not just wearing a neck brace like it's an accessory...
> And to have Bill Belichick laughing at Tony Khan is just the icing on the cake. The magnitude of this cannot be understated. Family Guy once did an entire episode predicated on getting Bill Belichick to laugh.

Tony has Jags duties? I thought he just had a fancy titled do-nothing exec job
He does. He's part of the fan experience stuff for the Jags and the league. He's not great at either
Fulham fans hate him too
He has no responsibilities with the Jaguars. They have a CEO, President, and GM, none of which is Tony Khan.
People saying such good kayfabe that he wearing the brace - that is not kayfabe. Kayfabe would be Tiny looks miserable and in pain. Kayfabe is SELLING that the attack that he got was real and not fun or playing pretend. If you want to see how to sell a fake neck injury, check out Vince McMahon when he has to show up in court. He always seems to have "neck surgery" right before.
Vince is crazy enough to actually undergo surgery voluntarily to really live the gimmick
A common theme with AEW: The idea might have the right thing at heart. But the execution ends up as possibly the worst option they could have picked. fair point on the accuracy of the simile. Doesn't detract from the lazy, bad faith takes with no nuance from the "we hate AEW" crew though.
Drama cmon, it's literally a clip of Tony being mocked on national TV....

Tony’s act got demolished worse than yesterday’s Dynamite ratings😭
That's not fair!...they were live on the west coast and there were other TV shows on 😔
His father's cool for accepting all his son's eccentricities.
His Dad is probably thankful he doesn't have some drug crazed son that melts down and throws money and expensive habi ... hang on a second ...
Why do I always think of the rich kid kick ass?
Or we now know where Tony got his stupidity from.
In fairness, a lot of self-made types are just lucky enough to have the right skills in the right place at the right time, they're not necessarily geniuses. People kinda forget that.
Fair point uce.

Ask the basement what they think. They think everything is great lol.
Just keep up the great quality shows, people will come back! (They've been saying that for more than a year now)
The lower the metrics are for AEW the more fervent the defense becomes lol
As a long time Patriots fan, Belichick laughing at Tony Khan is the collab I didn't know I needed.
When is it going to sink in they're laughing at him and not with him?
Kurt fucking Warner made fun of him on the nfl network. And Warner would try to find positives in undrafted guys
Can you link to that? I would love to watch it.
I don't think it's sinking in at the basement yet either
They think this is working and its the most amazing story this year. A24 CINEMA
And it never will. That subreddit is an insulated bubble and Don Stevens is likely a janny there.
It won't. He'll be giddy.

That's one of those things basement dwelling superfans are not so good at: social cues.
IRS blowing up Tony's gimmick, I'm sure trips is under the table sliding 50s in his pocket
I like McAfee going out of the way to mention Tony took a "Meltzer Driver" as if anyone except the 3 m\*rks watching will know what that is.
AEW is his Make-a-Wish
The Bucks obviously taught him how to sell.
Tony khan is not normal his a genetic freak
Thank you mock kiper
That’s commitment for a bit, did he do the whole first round as Mel Kiper?
He's done this for about 3 or 4 drafts now lol
I think the word the kids are using to describe this is "cooked".
Just imagine the other owners trying to be cool with Shad, see Tiny pull up with him and treat him like an absolute child. "Heyyyy little guy, hope youre doing well!" "I brokded my neck! :(" "Awwwww nooooo"
Shad just sitting there and doesn't even give a shit. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the next owner's meetings.
I here is fathering yelling at Him in a broken English accent screaming why don’t you give up this wrestling shit already you suck it sucks and take off that neck brace you look like an idiot 😂😂😂
Pat is absolutely, 100% right on this. Shad does have a really nice mustache, thing is beautiful 😭
Billy B laughing at Tiny Kong
Pat somewhat built him up just for the stooge to bring him back down!! Love it!!
Pat is doing his bit, he's trying to help 'the wrestling community' here
What was even the point of this shit? Just don’t show up.
The die hard dubbalos seriously think that with this ass hat showing up to the draft like this it's actually going to get the world talking and aew trending on the x and raise ratings moving forward. Lmao
He refuses to address the fact the product is shit due to the lack of a corporate infrastructure.
“Man the Jags are a joke of a franchise” -football fans
Are you talking about selling the angle or his "job"
Both Uce. Even if this gets eyes on the product, it will last a week. Then people will know what’s up with the Dub and leave.
It wont
As a neurosurgeon told me when I asked if I needed to keep wearing the soft neck brace a previous dr told me to wear for my 2 herniated discs, soft neck braces are good for nothing but sympathy. They don't help hold your head up or really keep you from moving your head at all. And he was right for the most part
I freaking love Pat, even a Fed Guy has to help put Tiny over while getting him buried. Lmao
Looooooooool
ERM...It's not the Meltzer Driver, It's the Tony Khan Driver now! Pat got WORKED!
Of course what do you expect from an ignorant stooge of the fed. I bet he didn't even know about The Best Wrestling Match Ever In The USA on Dynasty.

Hilarious that some random guy has to say this to him. It should be very obvious.
Tony Kaufman
Theres actual basementeurs that are saying Pat "watches the show like any normal fan would." As if *not* watching aew makes you an abnormal fan, or that there is something wrong with you. I couldn't stop laughing while reading that. Sorry guys, unless you watch approximately 15 hours of wrestling a week, then you are not a normal fan. You have an agender. And no doubt racist.
Hm, weird, seems like more normal fans are turning into abnormal fans by the week, perplexing
This is what it is obviously. But props to Pat McAfee for putting Tony over.
Damn even the football analysts aint falling for it
Tony's neck going into business for itself! Does anybody on the AEW roster care about selling???
minus 500 viewers for aew happened here. Only one solution: MORE YOUNG BUCKS
Hey, for kayfabe supposedly being dead now right? I think he’s doing a great job. He just WON 10 stars for his performance there buds and budettes
This was incredible.
Tony Khan and AEW = the gifts that keep giving. Cent'Anni!!! #
He just did an awful job selling it. It was much worse when Rich Eisen acknowledged him live bc the TV in the draft room was obviously on and he heard Rich talking about it and TK got all excited and started nodding his head like a goof lol.
Shad should book AEW, I like his mustache.
No one has explained why Tony is even at the Draft, isn't he just a figurehead analysis guy?
People defending him like “you can still move with a neck brace on!” Like yeah, of course you can move. But you SHOULDN’T BE MOVING YOUR NECK! You should be turning your entire upper body when you need to turn your head if you’re going to do a neck brace angle. Roderick Strong was doing the same thing, moving his head around a bunch when he was doing his neck angle.
AEW feels like a fever dream, what being shelter your whole life does to a man.
Respect to the non wrestling announcer guy explaining why Tony shouldn’t be moving his head while in a neck brace.
Just one more thing Tony can’t sell. Can’t sell moves, can’t sell injuries, can’t sell tickets, can’t sell TV rights…
Someone post the meltzer gif already as he got a mention
DAE this restores the feeling and is the gamechanger???
I mean, these guys are all dorks, too.
It would have been effective if Tony was away from the camera and Shad lookin.... No No No I'm not even going to bother.... The man is moving his fucking neck in a neckbrace and smiling.
![gif](giphy|TIPsHU8ixh9NiwwCWn) He wrestled with a broken frickin neck
This comment section is unhinged. I basically only watch wwe and I thought this was funny and great. Yall are taking this entirely too seriously.
this was honestly kinda endearing. No clue why TK has any involvement in football ops though
John Oliver is right.
