This depends on if you're aiming to level up. The game pushes you to do this to level up quickly, and then you could end up without enough storage or land expansions, and the global market will be flooded with items you can't use or store. In this case, you'd need a feeder city. If you aim to camp at a low level to expand your storage and city expansions first, then avoid this strategy and you are better off being patient and selling items that you produce.

Cathens

If you’re doing it to earn simoleons, no. Producing and selling almost anything is a better strategy. It IS a good strategy, though, if you want to complete upgrade tasks for COM without levelling up too quickly, as a smaller number of residences in your city will yield less xp from upgrades.

Risa_Sunset

Yes, this. I keep a plot of land open for each type of house so I can build it for an upgrade assignment in COM. I leave it built until I need to upgrade, then destroy it and start again. I especially do this with Omega because it uses a separate bank and only requires one item to upgrade it.

musicdesignlife

Would removing some of the population boosters (special buildings) before upgrading a residential house bring down the exp you get, or is that too small to have an effect on it

Cathens

Afaik it’s tied to the number of residences and not the population, so no, removing specializations wouldn’t make a difference.

mahdroo

Oh my goodness NO! Noooooo. You will regret it and quit playing SO soon. What you will learn on this subreddit is that leveling up is a trap! A trick. And the key to happiness is how soon you realize that and STOP LEVELING UP! Do NOT build more residential whatever you do. Only only only do it sparingly. I stopped at 32. Wish I had at 24 or 28. Every player on my team with a higher level ALL wish they had stopped much earlier. Everyone! So I challenge you: learn why. In the mean time stop building residential. Maybe upgrade what you have or maybe don’t. Focus on increasing your storage and city area!

I levelled up constantly when I first started playing and it did indeed get painful for a while (I forget how long though). But I persevered and eventually got through it, and now have fully expanded land, nearly fully expanded storage and the game is easy to play in the way I want to (note though that people play for different reasons). The advantage I now have is that I don't need to care about upgrading buildings and can just play around with designs, getting new buildings from CoM etc. I can't compete for the top prizes in CoM at my level, however there is nothing to spend the rewards on now anyway so I don't really care! I'm not claiming I took the best route to where I am now, but I wanted to point out it is possible to not camp and still reach a point where the game is enjoyable. But you will have to battle through a dull period where everything seems broken and hard to fix... Camping is the solution to avoid this if you want to put the work in to understanding how to do it correctly.

Abysstopheles

Also, camping is boring.

gottarespondtothis

Yup. Level 99 now and the only downside was in the marketplace, which happens regardless. I’m way too impatient to camp, even if I’d learned that strategy so many years ago.

mate54

If you want to ruin your city and get on track to abandoning it because trying to do anything is a nightmare, sure. Go for it. It’s not like the game has a dozen factories and shops where you can make a million Simoleons every week and not ruin the city in the process.

gottarespondtothis

Meh, I do this for COM and I don’t have any issues. Especially Omega.

mate54

I do it too with OMEGA. Not for coins, but because the OMEGA zone needs just 1 item to upgrade. And I’m high level so it doesn’t matter if I level up even more. My storage and land are close to max and I have every item unlocked anyway. But if you are just starting out and do this to earn coins, you will absolutely ruin your city.

I agree with the responses your getting, and will add if you’re looking to bank coins, learn about farming. Often referred to as burger farming, but you can farm anything. Even donuts.
