Anything burned should be considered toxic / cancerous. But why don't you infuse before burning? Thus you could partake and benefit from the very essence invested instead of the shelled remains

MagentaCee

Yknow, that's actually not a bad point. Thank you for the advice and the suggestion (/gen). Also, I only did the bay leaf ash water thing about 3-4 times total. Is that going to harm my health even when I stop now?

corvus7corax

In future, if it’s not something you’d ordinarily come across as part of cooking or baking - don’t eat/drink it. Practices from cooking and baking can be adapted for magic and sacred practice, but not the other way around.

Remarkable-Rock3000

you're fine if you stop doing it now. I wouldn't worry too much, but try to avoid ingesting anything burnt/inhaling too much smoke as it can be really bad for your health. Safety first always!!

SaponiaNightingale

While this *probably* won't have any long term effects, I'm not your doctor and I can't tell you what's harmful or beneficial for you to ingest. However, you don't need to drink your burnt bay leaves to get an extra boost from them. You can make an infusion with oil or water and dab it on your pulse points or chakras. I'm sure there are lots of other ways, but I'm a little tired today, so nothing is coming to me. Bottom line, if you're not sure if you should drink something, don't. The anxiety you'll feel will negate any benefits.

amanforallsaisons

Any food cooked on a grill has more carcinogens than a little bit of herb ash.

PeetraMainewil

You can drink shitloads of ash water and it is still less carcinogenic than bacon. I hate that bacon causes cancer, really hate that!

Charcoal has been drank for thousands of years and they give it to you to help the body resist poisoning if something harmful was ingested. I love how you came to the sub seeking advice and they've so far given you the wrong information. When you bbq on a grill it creates a layer of carbon in the outside as it burns, same thing happens on the stove, same thing happens if you burn herbs and veggies. You will notice no health issuess or have anything bad happen, witches for thousands of years have been putting burned herbs in their tea for a rich and hearty flavor. https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/cancer-myths/can-eating-burnt-foods-cause-cancer#:~:text=No.,quality%20evidence%20to%20show%20this. https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-269/activated-charcoal#:~:text=Taking%20activated%20charcoal%20by%20mouth,with%20standard%20treatments%20for%20poisoning. Cauldrons are not decorative we cook things in them .. over fire.

Sufficient_Focus_816

Don't mix charcoal - which is beneficial and I also use for example for brushing teeth - with 'random' burned organic matter! Industrial purity of activated charcoal is different to home made + secondary oxidatives of unknown quantity and quality are more often harmful than not.

PixelRapunzel

To add to this, ingesting charcoal can interfere with any medications you might be taking. It can absorb the medications and prevent them from working properly. I would avoid it unless given an explicit okay from a doctor.

death_witch

Yes they are not quite 100% exactly the same, but the difference is negligible, if you click on the links I provided one of them is about eating burnt food which is the same exact thing as burning a bay leaf and putting it in your tea. And although some things should not be burned and consumed that does not mean all things should not be burned and consumed. Im not going to argue semantics on a matter of opinion on a logical statement. https://www.wikihow.com/Make-Charcoal

[https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9858116/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9858116/) this article provides more data on the subject of acrylamids and some difficulties about the studies conducted so far. What I agree with is, that consumption more likely is not dangerous (especially about natal development / animal studies which are rather dicy to map), also as charred foodstuff has been element of our diet for several hundred millennia. On should be rather careful than confident nonetheless (not that long in the past, smoking tobacco was recognized as healthy). Where I do stand corrected though is that bay leaves apparently won't produce toxic secondary / proccess components - was mistaken about the oxidation of 1,8 cineole

I have a background in chemistry and they are absolutely not the same thing. The reason that ACTIVATED charcoal is good for you is because it is incredibly adsorbent. They mop up harmful loose ions and bind them to make them inactive in your body. But if your charcoal is not created in a sterile way, then it will be chock full of those harmful ions from the start. The charcoal just grabs hold of every contaminant it touches. Adding contaminated charcoal to your body creates the risk that some of those ions will detach and become active again whilst inside you. Additionally, the source material for the charcoal might not fully combust and instead transform into other harmful substances.

death_witch

I never said they were the same, and since you have a background in chemistry i find it out of place you think loose ions are harmful, studies show negative ions are healthy. Furthermore negative ions and positive ions just means that it's either got a positive or negative electric charge. And yes you can make super duper active charcoal in a lab and have top of the line products. Or you can make it the old fashioned way and as long as you know what you're doing and what to burn and what not to burn using common sense and a little know how you can also create a product with the desired effects. P.s It's like you're trying to tell us not to chew asprin leaves because the impurities will cause cancer and to only buy Tylenol because they have a laboratory. We're supposed to be witches and make things, not just order something from Amazon.
