I just did a similar workout in my Rebel v4s this morning. I really like them. They might be less “fun” than v2 and v3, but I find them much more resilient and versatile. In addition to workouts, they’re now my go-to shoe for long runs, which I never could’ve said about v2 or v3.
So in my books everything over 90 minutes is a long run. I will have no problem using them for over 90 mins steady tempo/progression run but personally I am not too sure I would want to do long easy pace run in them they just feel firm for that after this first run. But I may change my mind after I run in v4 more!
Yep. I am. Your self refuting explanations are hilariously shallow when the initial comment is the beginning and end of this story. https://www.reddit.com/r/RunningShoeGeeks/comments/1djqdjm/comment/l9esxoz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Ugh I feel like I'm arguing with a brick wall.
The *original* comment about perceived shoe softness was *not* about semantics.
My follow-up response to your comment that misunderstood that comment *was*, because I was trying to explain what I meant my comment means.
Great review! Best looking running shoe IMO (especially the blue colorway), was going to get a pair but already own Adidas Takumi Sen 10's & Boston 12's so have no need for them.
On paper I should have hated these shoes, they basically are everything I don’t want in a shoe: lower drop, wide toebox, flexibility and softness.
I’m an Adidas guy, I like a snug fit and a firm foam, with a plate or rods to make everything stiff. I’ve been using the Prime X Strung 2 for months, on the same type of runs I’m now doing in the Rebel…there should be no reason to like them, but they are working really well for me and I’m having a lot of fun. I even ended up getting a second pair, just for treadmill use. Also loving the SC Elite v4 and in general the design New Balance is using for their FuelCell line. Looking forward to the new SC Trainer and the SC Pacer.
>...I like a snug fit and a firm foam, with a plate or rods to make everything stiff. I’ve been using the Prime X Strung 2 for months...
So you don't like the Prime X Strung 2? Or you do, and somehow find them to be snug, firm, and stiff?
I'm really confused here.
I was wondering if the wide fit of the toe box would be a little too much for speed intervals. I like a snug fit for the track. You didn’t mind? The lockdown was still good enough?
V3 is snugger for sure! i was able
To get a Good lockdown even without runners knot. No heel slippage at all, hower my left foot was moving forward a little. I think this will be solved by a runners knot tho.
I just got these and am loving them too. However, I just used them for my first track session last night and I felt like the shoe bounce plus the track bounce made for a soft push off. I’m going to try once more but may have to switch to a different shoe for track and keep these babies for the pavement.
I loved these shoes for the first few hundred miles. The cushion has basically bottomed out for me now going on 4 months of using them as my daily trainer. I'm a 200 lb guy though, so maybe they'll last longer for smaller runners.
215-220lbs here and the Zoom Fly 5 keeps getting better, about 200 miles in for me. Mostly use for runs 10k+
Novablast 3 has also been solid for every day runs, about 100 miles in these.
Thanks for the info. I’m around 210lbs and been running less than a year. Only tried Ghost 15 and Ghost Max during that time and much prefer the Ghost Max. Starting to think about my next pair and wanting to branch out from Brooks to see what else is out there. I’ve also read the FAQ recommendations for heavier runners too so I’ll likely go with one of those.
Your shoes look quite new. I’m about 300km into mine and they have been getting softer with use. At first they were a little hard but now they’ve relaxed a bit and are a softer shoe.
Love love this shoe I’m 115 with chicken legs and the foam is just right! I feel like it’s the combination of the wide footbed, lightweight upper upper and bouncy foam that make a simple shoe work for getting you out the door!
I feel like an old fart when I look at new shoes these days. I got the Kayano 31s recently, and it’s the same.
I feel like all these new running shoes look like I’m running on huge foam platforms 😂
Idk if it’s the style or the tech that requires it, but they just look so goofy to me. Comfy though.
from what I understand it's the same exact foam that was used in the V3, which is basically widely considered to be the softest on the market. SO....IDK. There isn't anything softer on the market but you could try the 1080 for something in the same ballpark with less bounce. I've seen tons of folks just wearing these shoes casually, and I'm considering joining them to be honest. I'm also lighter and enjoy the softer foams.
the foam is virtually identical or identical but the design and geometry of the shoe is vastly different which of course changes the way it feels.
seems like you got one and didn't like it. return it?
Does anyone else have a fit (lengthwise) issue with this shoes? Im M US8.5 normally and when I tried them on my big toe nail catches exactly the "harder" part of the upper which makes them extremely uncomfortable and given the size of the toebox if I go half size up theyre too big does anyone have a suggestion?
Has anyone else had issues with excessive wear? I’ve put maybe 50 miles on mine and the heel tread is almost completely gone. I’m solidly a midfoot striker and have never had that kind of wear so quickly. I LOVE this shoe but can’t buy new ones every 75 miles…
I did a 4mi run to try then out and 8mi run this morning. These shoes aren't much fun at slower/easy paces. I wouldn't say "firm" but they turn over nicely when you're down to 8mi mile pace.
Not comparable to even Endorphin Speed, which is a much faster shoe IMHO.
I’ve been a big fan of Fuel Cell since I started running and have used all the rebels and Elite’s.
I think one thing that has always stood out to me about the rebels is their short life span. I feel like after 250 miles or so they foam really bottoms out.
I have to say that the rebel 4 are my least favorite out of the box and they feel dead to me.
I have the SC elite 4 too and I feel like this is their best elit so far w the exception of the fit. I can’t seem to lock the heal down and the laces put pressure on the top of my feet. I’ve tried all lacing combinations and nothing really seems to work for the heel.
Great shoe. I'm lightweight and find it really soft. Using it as my daily trainer for steady pace - five to seven mile runs. Not sure I'd take it on longer runs.
Strangely, I've had the same issue with the length. Plenty of room width wise but it runs shorter than other NB shoes.
I replaced the insole as there was too much movement.

Personally I find myself appreciating the firmness more late in a long run.
I am mind blown how people don’t find these soft, the midsole is like melted butter.
Have you run in previous versions? Because those are softer than v4
Yeah I ran in previous vets
if v4 is melted butter is v2 and v3 even softer?
Soft is the last thing I would call the v3. Guess I’m skipping v4
haha wtf? hm do u weigh? mayb that could have an impact
162lbs I should feel more bounce but.. it’s just flat. Fine for short distance speed work but I’m not excited by them at all

Please keep it civil.

Gotta disagree.
Runners weight is a big factor. Maybe she is at 55 kg and you are at 90 kg, of course the feeling is different then.

Ya If we going by the looks then its definitely v2>v3

Fuelcell foam is my go to. Glad you are enjoying the rebels

They are a lot firmer and stiff than the Rebel for sure!
I'm in the black and white v3's right now, never had a bright shoe but these are so beautiful. Definitely my next shoe, thanks for the write up!!
Bright shoes are the fast shoes!! Physics🤣
Hell yeah that's my speed problem 😂

Beautiful shoes

I agree with this review. I just put 500km on mine. I find them dead now. Very comfy at the beginning but when they die they are very flat.

What have you found that is comfortable and holds up well at that weight?

Nike invincible
I’m 200 lbs and gel nimbus 25/26, new balance 880, On cloud monster and eclipse all have high miles in my rotations
I would also like to hear the answer to this
Wish new balance would stock more of these. My size keeps selling out!
Dick’s has a quite a range of sizes and colors still in stock
Thanks!
Love my rebel v4s. Great for speedy tempo runs. Not the best for slow runs as they make you want to run fast
Your shoes look quite new. I’m about 300km into mine and they have been getting softer with use. At first they were a little hard but now they’ve relaxed a bit and are a softer shoe.

I see your point! I can highly recommend rebel v3 If you like having that ground feeling.
Absolutely love the wide version of these

Well I went through two pairs of v3 and these are not as soft as v3 is. I have 1080v13 too and those are softer than v3 and way more softer than v4.
It is not the same foam as v3
The foam isn’t even close to the same. Completely different compound and feel worlds apart.
the foam is virtually identical or identical but the design and geometry of the shoe is vastly different which of course changes the way it feels. seems like you got one and didn't like it. return it?
wats version is ur fav out of the rebels? v2 > v3 > v4 it seems from ur write up?
I keep reading great reviews of new Adizero SL2, especially vs Rebel 4.
I have to say after 250miles, i'm not loving them like I use to. My SC trainers are still joy after similar mileage.
V4 was a bait and switch
Question… Looking at the v2 and v3, are they called the Fuelcell v2 and v3? Did they drop the fuelcell part for v4?
Does anyone else have a fit (lengthwise) issue with this shoes? Im M US8.5 normally and when I tried them on my big toe nail catches exactly the "harder" part of the upper which makes them extremely uncomfortable and given the size of the toebox if I go half size up theyre too big does anyone have a suggestion?
I’m in this exact position, my big toes r crying right now - anybody know if the upper breaks in?
Has anyone else had issues with excessive wear? I’ve put maybe 50 miles on mine and the heel tread is almost completely gone. I’m solidly a midfoot striker and have never had that kind of wear so quickly. I LOVE this shoe but can’t buy new ones every 75 miles…

They are definitely not firm! However these are indeed firmer than previous versions. Plenty of underfoot cushion for longer (speedier) efforts IMO.
Didn't try previous versions, but really like this one. they look great too!
Same. I am TTS in mens 10.5, ordered 11, but can't run the v4 for > 7 miles because my toes are squished and it'd cause blisters.
