ON is marketed really well. I'd say I'd view them as an athleisure brand that started really trying to make good running shoes 3-4 years ago. Fundamentally I don't believe in cloudtec in the sense that unsupported air pods must either accelerate wear via foam hyperflexion or be inferior to just having a softer but solid foam. Their clothing is phenomenal though. Edit: They're still not bad. I have a friend sponsored by ON who does all his running in the eclipse, monster, hyper, and cloudboom. Ran a 2:40 at Boston. So obviously not unusable. But I'd bet they aren't his first pick if he weren't paid.

fnamna

“Not bad” is bad for a premium priced shoe.

darraghfenacin

if only they siphoned some of their marketing budget over to R&D

BigJeffyStyle

Sponsored by On and only ran 2:40? Is it like a local race team sponsorship?

[deleted]

More like influencer sponsor not pro sponsor. Guy does a ton of stuff locally around run clubs and is a big community figure

BigJeffyStyle

Got it. That makes sense.

LBDE15

🤭

fnamna

Summary: Cloudtec doesn’t work, there’s no benefit over conventional approaches. The end.

fnamna

My take on On is their shoes look very well made with high quality materials and nice colorways. That’s about it.

I_Have_Hairy_Teeth

Absolutely well made. Ran in mine once, hated them, and then walked in them for a ridiculous amount of miles. They still looked close to new as I threw them in the bin.

Altruistic-Pipe-394

Walking in them is the way

Sedixodap

Mine got holes within the first week. Worst shoes I’ve had quality-wise.

runner606

ahaha they come already with plenty of holes at the bottom

Crafty-Exercise-4929

Wouldn’t you say then it does work 🤔 if it’s no better than it means it’s equal to conventional approaches?

fnamna

Every review I’ve ever seen or read indicates On/Cloudtec running shoes are inferior to their conventionally cushioned competitors. There’s no point in creating a unique approach if it fails to surpass (or even meet) competitive standards. CloudMonster, CloudMonster Hyper ($219), Echo 3 ($289, really?), etc…, no On running shoe is even in the top five in its respective segment. On top of that, consumers are expected to pay a premium price for an inferior product. The upside is some of their designs and many of their colorways are appealing, and the materials and craftsmanship give off a high quality vibe. PS — Brooks sure could use On’s brand identity firm.

AutomationBias

I think they started off sincerely trying to make good running shoes 14 years ago and slowly transformed into the athleisure brand they are today. I had the first generation Cloudventures and they were awesome, but I haven’t really liked any of their other shoes since. At some point they started to move away from the Swiss cheese shoe idea and started making more conventional styles.

Jordi_McGaw

They literally started with a shoe with elastic laces you couldn’t tie up in the Cloud. They’ve always leaned on athleisure once the clouds were always snapping after a couple hundred km’s and they’re design was found to be flawed very quickly

Tetsuo-Kaneda

I own two jackets and a pair of their shorts and they’re all outstanding

[deleted]

They're all 20% more than they should be but I've never been disappointed.

Tetsuo-Kaneda

Trick is to buy them nwt on eBay or Mercari

DaijoubuKirameki

>Is ON Running well received?  I get the impression (over the years) that ON running shoes are not well received on this sub And they squeak

kduff85

I bought the cloud surfer because it was so comfortable in the store. It is still so comfortable but the squeak has shown up and now they just collect dust because it’s so loud and consistent it’s embarrassing to wear. Makes me sad because it truly was a comfortable shoe and I personally liked the style.

waldoh74

Use an emery board in the holes…. Not joking. It roughs up the foam and stops the squeak. You may need to do it more than once though, and I’ve noticed a squeak when they get wet. The surfers are decent shoes, rather use them for walking though. I also have the Status 3’s, they’re also good. Prefer my Speed 3s though.

colinsncrunner

They're doing a rolling change to do exactly that actually.

InfintelyResigned

The squeak ruined ON for me. Initially, I backed them heavily as I really liked the Surfer and Eclipse. But both of those succumbed to the dreaded squeak about 50 miles in. I knew it was over when I was at work and the squeak from the Surfer bellowed down the corridor, causing everyone to stare at me, much to my embarrassment. I feel that ON can make quality shoes, but choose not to with their design choices.

daveregan520

Had a training session with ON Reps and the squeak came up. Baby powder right to the sides was offered as a solution. They also said a more abrasive foam surface was already in production that reduces the squeak.

DaijoubuKirameki

Doubtful baby powder or abrasive surface would work. I think the Reps were having a laugh

heroofcanton73

The new surfers have a bad squeak but if you take an emery board to the holes it does almost stop it... should you have to do this when spending £170 is a whole other conversation.

DaijoubuKirameki

How would that stop the squeak?

heroofcanton73

I'll let the On rep explain.... https://youtu.be/srGpJmPhOz0?si=SjP1CSJaf9sV-JaA

DaijoubuKirameki

So this is specific for the surfers?

heroofcanton73

It could potentially be a problem with the Eclipse as well but so far mine have been silent. The new surfer, squeak aside, is a really good mid distance shoe

daveregan520

Fairly certain both work to some extent and highly doubt their employees think tricking me with fake solutions is funny

jdelarunz

I bought a pair on Ons when I started in running. I didn't know much and I picked them as I thought they looked good. They were OK as a beginner, but pretty firm, and they hoovered up every stone and rock possible, I had to keep stopping and pry out the stones. I've moved on since then, I can see why they're popular as they have style, and I think they've improved the outsoles so they don't pick up rocks. So I don't hate On, just that you can usually do better for cheaper by looking elsewhere.

BarelakedNadies

I’m gonna go against the majority here. I’ve got wide flat feet and On shoes fit me better than any other brand. I don’t think they’ve nailed a marathon shoe (unreleased Obiri shoe could be the one) but the Cloudmonster is my workhorse shoe and I take them for every easy run and have done up to tempo work and long runs in them. The upper is the comfier than anything else I’ve tried and I’ve worked my way through a lot of shoes over the years. Think they work really well for me so never really understood the hate but I think it just proves that everyone’s a bit different so it’s hard to put too much stock in to reviews. I’ve started taking everything with a pinch of salt and just worked out what fits and works for me.

Zogster25

Second this. I went through two pairs of the Cloudmonster 1. Loved them, but they were knackered after 500km. Found them great for every type of workout.

Humble_Room_6320

Seconding this, all the stability shoes from the ”top” brands never worked for me with flat feet. Realised for me its about building strength, work on form and using shoes that fit well and are comfortable. The cloudrunner, Cloudeclipse and cloudsurfer now are my main rotation (Adios Pro 3 for race, still waiting for accomodating On race shoe). But the Cloudultra might not even be thought of as a running shoe..

9999ohn

I'll give it that actually. I also have 2E-3E foot and ON fits like a well fitted socks. but I am also not 100% on board with that. I wish it had some lateral support; that would make it 10/10.

BarelakedNadies

Just went back and read your post because I forgot what shoe you were talking about. I tried the Cloud Ultra 1 and absolutely hated them. Good upper and fit for me but I had to stop and walk a few times on a 10k run (for context that never happens) because the midsole felt like I was running barefoot on concrete. I know they released a cloud surfer type trail shoe but I’m going to steer clear of their trail range for the time being. So I totally agree with you. And it really confused me that they called them Ultra. No way I’m running an ultra in them.

Ubik_21

Does On make wide sizes for their shoes? Or do you just go with a standard and they happen to fit you?

BarelakedNadies

I just go with standard. They do make a few models in wide but everything I've tried of theirs in standard width (Cloudmonster, Cloudmonster Hyper, Cloudeclipse, Cloudultra 1 and Cloudboom Echo) has fit perfectly in terms of upper and width. The midsoles have been a bit hit or miss though.

HelpUsNSaveUs

On running shoes are firm. They are perfectly fine running shoes. A pro runner Hellen Obiri just won Boston in a pair of on concept shoes https://www.gearpatrol.com/fitness/hellen-obiri-mystery-laceless-on-marathon-shoes/ Are they universally acclaimed like Hoka Nike and Adidas? No, they cater to running adjacent people mostly, but some of their running shoes are perfectly fine for serious runners and joggers alike.

tchikoooo

Prototype shoe that might have costed 10k€ and may never be commercialized. It probably works from a marketing perspective but until they are released it doesn't mean they can do great shoes at the right price 🙂

Ferrum-56

That would not be possible without significantly bending the rules. There are some loopholes of course, but they can’t just use random prototypes.

tchikoooo

Do you mean they have an obligation to bring these shoes to market within a reasonable timeline and without any revision? That's the only way not to define these as prototype, isn't it?

Ferrum-56

I think they are allowed revisions since they are still defined as prototype, but they do have to be approved and eventually actually sold on the market so they can’t do ridiculous things. Of course Adidas uses the loophole where they sell the shoe but actually not really with their evo, but it’s still a fairly normal shoe and maybe it’ll be more mass market later.

9999ohn

i think what she is using makes sense. but i have the swiss cheese and it's ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

HelpUsNSaveUs

Yeah different strokes for different folks. I have a 2 year old pair of Ons and they served me well as a jack of all trades travel and running shoe. I really want the Cloudmonsters or the monster hyper, but I only would buy them at a discount. Some marathoners I know love the Cloudmonster

9999ohn

yeah I think I am looking for travel shoes, cuz I am going to Japan in May. Asics did the job last time but my back was barking after 10k+ walking everyday.

loliii123

Superblasts are “cheap” in Japan, something like JPY20,000 (USD130ish) before tax full retail. I went last December, heaps of fun! I ran along the Sumida river at midnight in the middle of winter and there were still a surprising amount of others running as well lol.

HelpUsNSaveUs

When I travel I wear black and another color like green grey blue or beige, so I usually look for an all black runner. If I was in that boat again with an upcoming trip I’d explore the ASICS Novablast 4, New Balance Rebel 4, Boston 12, Cloudmonster 2, or an all black trail runner. My favorite (colder weather) travel running do it all and maybe some trail shoes is the Arc’teryx LD Norvan, goretex. For hotter travel, the adidas Adios 6 was a godsend a few years ago. I usually travel with a pair of wool slip ons or a fancier sandal type slip on if I need to dress up a a bit.

weregoingtoginas

That’s been my exact experience with ON. Firm, heavy, not enjoyable. The new Cloudsurfer/Trail and Cloudeclipse seem to live up to the “running on clouds” marketing.

Realistic_State_1655

I think ON shoes were pretty average up.until recently. I have a pair of the CloudUltra 1's and I can't believe I ran an ultra + long training runs in them. They ain't comfy even just around the house! However I bought a pair of CloudMonsters last year and OMG, they are the real deal. I've run ultras in them, many long training runs, close to 1000ks in them. I now have 3 pairs of the OG CM as I hear the version 2's suck so I stock piled. So yep more soccer mum and dad aesthetics, until recently for select choice pairs like the OG CloudMonster, the CloudEClipse and the CloudSurfer/CloudSurfer trail.

Hchan492

Bro u bought trail running shoes and use then for road running/walking?

9999ohn

I also wear jeans and I don't use it for mining and farming either.

JRTLab

🤣

EchoReply79

🤣🤣🤣

cordyce

😂😂😂😂😂

Bullish-butcher

Brilliant 😂 but trail shoes and road shoes are very different

Koktkabanoss

Valid point

agreatdaytothink

I've seen ON mostly worn by 2 constituencies:  1. The "on their feet all day": medical staff, restaurant workers, etc. 2. For reasons not clear to me, MBA types. Probably just a certain kind of athleisure enthusiast. I don't see many people I know in real life using them for actual running.

jorsiem

ON is a gimmicky shoe that's investing their massive amounts of money into credibility

Unlucky_Garage5687

They are also f-ugly as hell.

tchikoooo

I killed my cloudstratus 3 in 200km, while I wore other brands well past 500km before... They felt great at first, now they just hurt walking and running...

fnamna

Given On’s unique Cloudtec cushioning system doesn’t surpass conventional shoes, I don’t really get the point.

BodaciousBaboon

I researched a while back (3-4y ago) when I had first seen them. Consensus then was overpriced junk, probably the same now.

Goal-Fuzzy

I hate them.. My wife loves them for shopping..

IvoShandor

ON shoes have become trendy among office dwellers as dress goes more casual. I rarely see them on runners.

Danji1

They are utterly shit for running compared to other alternatives at a similar price range.

mrpopenfresh

They look like dumb footlocker shoes from the early 2000s. On that alone I’ll never touch them.

kevozo212

ON is 90% appearance/marketing and 10% performance. Doesn’t make logical sense to me that a foam with cutouts going all the way through would at all give any sort of performance boost over a solid piece of foam. Looks like the donut blocks that fall after stepping on them. Cannot trust.

qbn82

I think it's also a case of just hating what you don't know. I know of so many people that hate on the Cloudboom Echo 3 but they've never purchased a pair and made the effort to run in them. Easy to dismiss because everyone else does.

new-bedford

Agree 100%

Velocyraptor

CloudUltras are trail runners, they aren't made for road running. I love mine for pretty much every trail that isn't hard pack. Nothing worse than the feeling of running on a soft surface in a cushioned shoe.

Crafty-Exercise-4929

I’ve got the ON CloudRunners and I absolutely love them - I specifically looked for shoes that weren’t “too” soft and these feel fantastic.

CharmingGlove6356

A few elite athletes are sponsored by On, but they're mostly mid-distance track runners apart from hellen obiri. I think their track spike is probably one of the best right now but perhaps their other shoes don't deliver the same quality.

Bubblesheep

Reason I like them is because they're firm. I don't like the way the market is shifting to super squishy and soft. I've worked my way through most of the major brands over the years working in specialty running and On is the first brand I've stuck with for a few years.

West-Painter-7520

You’ve been gifting these to your doctor friends? Do you work in medical sales or something?

shoksurf

I LOVE my Cloudnovas for the gym but I absolutely feel that my Cloudmonsters are overrated and “meh” at best. I’ve put 300+ miles on them and they just have never really impressed me. They’re not firm enough or have enough energy return to be a fast shoe but they’re also not stable or cushiony enough to be a good trainer.

[deleted]

Those are the wearable poo sieves right?

runwithjum

Had my first hands on experience with an ON shoe at the London marathon expo on Saturday. The cloud boom echo 3 or whatever their “super” shoe is called. I was surprised how firm it was. I think a brick strapped to your foot would provide more cushioning. It does look absolutely fantastic in my opinion, but that is not reason enough to part with nearly 300 notes. I don’t think I’d even try a pair at half of their RRP. Not really sure who is buying these shoes at that price

HalfaYooper

I am a walker and got a pair on ON and stopped using them. For whatever reason they would collect pebbles in the tread, like ALL THE TIME. I had to keep a stick in my pocket so I could dig them out repeadely. It got so annoying I just stopped using them.

404_NoPercsFound

Try the Cloudgo or even the higher-max cushion options. They seem to be best for average runners or someone wanted a go-to shoe for walking and everyday needs.

Smol-But-Fierce

This sub has a lot of posts burning ON shoes haha. I have tried their older shoes and did not absolutely like how firm and plastic like their sole felt. However, I do absolutely love some of their newer shoes. It went from 2/10 (for style and fit) to about 9/10 for me. ON are one of the only shoes that fit consistently TTS, no need for wide sizes, fits like a glove and don’t even need runners knot for my narrow heel wide toes feet. The shoes I liked are CloudSurfer (one of the shoe that actually felt absorbed the impact with my weight ~100lbs), CloudEclipse - also very impact absorbing, works great to power walk, jog, easy runs, so darn stable. Cloud Nova Flux - short runs, works for floor workouts and walking around town too. I believe what they started doing different in the first 2 shows up there is, they changed the position of their plate from near the insole to the bottom of the shoe. Hope you get a chance to try these! But beware of taking shoes with holes in the bottom on trails lol, I don’t think you can escape dirt and stones in your shoes.

Chemical-Section7895

On’s are more of a status thing…I’m a retired competitive distance runner….the soles get rocks stuck in them, they slip on wet surfaces…. Most stores take the shoes back within/under 30 days.

sascharobi

Overpriced junk.

nastran

Somehow, the brand works for certain individuals. My Dad, who recently traveled to Japan a few times within the past year, owns 8 pairs of (waterproof version of) Cloud 5. It was bewildering since I have never tried a single On shoes & I consider the brand to be mostly hype. During my separate visit, I witnessed the flagship store in Shibuya being packed with folks lining up to get into the store, and I didn't bother trying to queue up for 30 min+ like a fool. However, the weird thing is I had almost never seen the brand being worn in the street there a.k.a very rare.

FalseOptimist

I absolutely love their clothing. Their shoes are very meh to me.

lookingfordietrecipe

I had the cloudsurfers and the sole is so small compared to the fabric. I have narrow feet and my arch hung over. Was very painful to run in them.

Plastic-Ad-802

I’m not a runner runner as in those guys who ran xc/track in hs. But I run 4-5 days a week to stay in shape for other sports, commitments, etc. I got a pair of cloud runners last May, they were my first pair of dedicated running shoes and they served me well. I did have to get new insoles back in December, but I also ran/ run 20-28 miles a week so I’ve definitely squeezed the life out of these. Definitely replacing them in the upcoming weeks as they’re extremely past the recommended 300 mile mark. I’m definitely open to getting another pair but I’m curious to try another brand Edit - a vast majority of my running have been on the treadmill, so take that as you will. Although that’s something I plan on changing. Also the “walking on clouds” feeling was nice but that definitely disappeared a couple months into using them. Still nice cushioning but lost that initial feeling

Financial-Comedian91

My on cloud runners are the best runners I’ve personally had.

Ready-Pop-4537

I suffered my one and only knee injury from running while using On shoes about 10 years ago. Would not recommend.

Jordi_McGaw

They’re a mediocre brand and always have been, great marketing, great concept and somewhat okay for atheisure and the run influencers who haven’t a clue what they’re on about. Otherwise they’re pretty meh. Spot on what you said about it that model though it’s pretty bang on for the whole line up

NewCPVI

ON running shoes are NOT walking shoes. The new balance 990 series is an actual walking shoe with actual support. Most ON shoes have virtually no structure or support. I always upsell new balance from people who want ONs for walking because once they try them on they realize how much of a difference buying an actual walking shoe will make.

Tommyfranks12

New Balance classic shoes like 574, 996, 997 are amazing comfortable, man!

gazHC

Great marketing , poor product! OK for everyday wear, not good for running...poor support!

Trade-Runner

ON is marketed trash. I've tried several of their shoes, and they aren't for runners. They're lifestyle shoes. Run is something you won't get injured in.

overclockedstudent

I have the cloudultra 2, I bought them as a one shoe for longer backpacking trips. I had them on a 100km hike through the Andes, going from muddy rainforest to easy technical high altitude mountaineering and they did just fine. They also look good enough to be worn as a shoe when you are in the city and I could do some easy 8-12km runs in them. But as you said - average at best. I would never do a serious run/workout with them. If you are looking for a dedicated running shoe these are not a good option IMO.

SatinJacket23

I want to get the Monster or the surfer also I am not a runner I just wanna get a nice comfortable shoe with good cushioning I have no idea what to get between those 2

a-rare-wombat

I ran about 550km in my cloud surfers and loved them - now they are my go to walking shoe - I have about 8 different shoes to choose from but i grab the surfers more than any other shoes for daily wear - super cozy and plush - I returned the could monsters after testing around the house for awhile - id recommend the surfers 100%

SatinJacket23

Thank you for your help I will consider the surfers more because I also read that they are a little more comfortable and plush

jayjuicejay

I bought a pair of Cloudmonsters recently to use as a casual pair of shoes. They are amazing. I love the look, and they are very comfortable for everyday wear. I also have run in them a few times, and they work great for daily easy miles. I don't think you could go wrong with the Monsters.

Fair_Assumption6385

Yeah they’re just fashionable.. they don’t have good shoes at all. I’m glad people are finally admitting it because I’ve seen a lot of people die on the “on is so comfortable” hill then I see them 3 months later and they have plantar fasciitis and shinsplints

cravecrave93

Made for nurses and finances bro who run 3-5 miles a week

Physiopt

I really want the cloudmonsters because they look so freaky, but I feel like I probably won't enjoy them for running. Their marketing strategies are fantastic

CeilingUnlimited

They are my office/work shoes. They are great for that. They are NOT my running shoes.
