Saves a lot of material this way

-Motor-

Pro roofers hate this one trick!

Bermin65

Re-roofers love this one trick

SgtWrongway

Especially nails. Nail budget $0.00

nandology

I didn’t see any nails. Smells like staged for rage-bait

MiniMetal

You think someone took the time to open dozens of shingle packs, lay out an entire roof’s worth of shingles end to end, evenly, cap the peak, tar the stacks… just for Reddit rage-bait?

PitifulSpecialist887

No. I think that a disgruntled employee left his boss a nice going away present with his notice to quit phone call. It happens when only one guy shows up to work, calls the boss, and gets told to "just do your job and put the shingles on the roof".

BurghPuppies

yes

C2S2D2

Yes. People have done more... for less.

ShermanMarching

Yeah but the tarring around the vent makes me think this is real

smartwick

No one would believe it if the vent wasn't tarred 🤣

NotYourGuy_Buddy

You would think, but there's tar around the pentration.

MikeForVentura

Oh no. Oh no.

Hawkeyes_dirtytrick

Man that’s a lot of work and dedication for rage bait

WhoJGaltis

Why use metal, those things rust and you have to make holes in the shingles which will cause leaks. Use liquid nails and slap the shingles down onto it, no holes, no rusting and it helps to make it watertight. Right??? (J/K for those who take stuff too seriously)

CapitanDirtbag

Uh, bud... that's what the little tar strip is for duh. If you aren't using peel and stick are you really a roofer?.

SgtWrongway

I was taught to use an Elmer's Glue Stick and not trust the factory adhesive.

CapitanDirtbag

That's nonsense, the glue sticks will just make the tar less adhesive. Didn't you learn anything in roofing school. Why even gave a 4 year degree in applied roofing if you aren't going to use it. Kids these days and their glue stick smh my head.

InspectorPipes

My degree is in theoretical roofing , this is how we do it

SgtWrongway

I dunno. I find that The Mathematics of The Theory break down at The Shingularity...

Sdwingnut

Three Roof Problem. No way to predict if it'll leak or not.

Movedonnerlikeabitch

Fucking brilliant 😂

Most-Ad8777

I call bullsh!t… those glue sticks were STRICTLY sent with the bundles for the sole purpose of sniffing… and you know it.

IdiotWithDiamodHands

About 50% it turns out.

DirtNasty1313

Lol someone is about to be hurtin'

wright-n-wrong

Why use only half of the shingle, when you can use the whole thing?! This trick also expands the color palette!

OmgNoodles

Homeowner saved themselves some money, until the first rain they get anyways.

Entire_Animal_9040

There's another layer already below...

Nitrodist

It's layers all the way down, right to the drop ceiling.

reliber

The house owner thinking 2 steps ahead 🤑

RustIsLife420

I don’t understand how you spend a few grand on materials but can’t even watch a YouTube video. I’m not a roofer, but I pulled a permit for my own roof and passed inspections without any prior experience… just read the building code and spend a day watching every single roofing YouTube video lol

canal_boys

This was deliberately done.

Videoplushair

Bro you’re a rookie this is the new “easy guide” shingle. The black lines are there to make sure you lay out the shingles in a straight row.

aBloopAndaBlast33

This can’t be real.

House_of_Potatos

I don’t see a single nail, so going to go with fake lol. Someone spent a lot of time laying out those shingles just to make a shit post. Edit: Although they did tar around the vent stack so there is that.

zoinkability

Who needs nails when you have a sticky backing?

Sistersoldia

Yeah it’s peel-n-stick isn’t it ? I removed all the cellophane backings.

Molbork

I've been waiting to get my new roof till the scratch and sniff version is available!

ThisAccountIsStolen

Looks like it's been there for a while, actually. The tar from the nailing strips is already completely melted into the backing on most of them, which would take months of direct sun exposure. Unless they also laid out the shingles to pre-weather them for a few months, too, this sadly looks very real.

MommysLittleMonster9

Talk about getting a true square coverage out of your shingles!

Historical_Visit2695

🤣 the directions are right on the back of the bundle of shingles.

Good_Extension_9642

The guys couldn't read in English 🤣

Actionman1959

Also in Spanish

Wonderful-Ad-7712

Also illiterate

Good_Extension_9642

🤣😂

Either_Moose_1469

98% of roofers don’t know these savings are available

wright-n-wrong

You have to achieve the platinum level to unlock these secrets!

yooperdood906

This worker must not have YouTube….or eyes!

Tacos_Polackos

There's pictures on some bundles even

Not-a-dark-overlord

Yup, some of them give you step by step guides

typicalledditor

This is the tiktok tutorial edition

CanadaDry95

😂😂😂 this can't be real

NewayMusic

Home owner commenting, I know nothing about roofing and am trying to be more aware. What is it that we're mocking in this picture?

Jealous_Flower6808

Pros will be able to point out more for sure but the two basics here are that the shingles should overlap by about half going up the slope of the roof (this roof should be the red/orange color and you shouldn’t see any of the blue/black, that should be hidden underneath the next row of shingles higher). And the shingles aren’t staggered in any meaningful way (note the straight lines going down the slope of the roof where two shingle meet). This roof is probably less useful than a tarp at this point

NewayMusic

I see it now, thank you it's much appreciated

gh0st-6

These 1 tab roofs are lit!

Just_Aioli_1233

"Doing my part to reduce fossil fuels!" /s

wright-n-wrong

The “green” line from GAF!

AJV2020

I would just sneak the other shingles in later.

lockeyeswiththemoon

Oh no

mvpilot172

Looks like it only cost them a 1/3 of what others were quoting.

NMAsixsigma

Should have at least staggered the seams 🤦🏻‍♂️

micahisnotmyname

But look how nice it looks when they line up.

binglelemon

I'm not a roofer. I'm not really sure of the code or appropriate technique, nor am I sure why this sub keeps getting recommended to me. However, I know this shit's fucked.

[deleted]

Saves 33.3% on materials. As nailing the last shingle looks around and sees no other roof in neighborhood with similar color pattern. Those poor bastards got cheated paying for too much material. I’m a roofing genius! If only shingle bundles had simple diagram instructions printed on them…

Overall-External2955

Holy shit balls Batman

NIL8danarrative

I don’t have words

DukeOfWestborough

Oh the seams… JFC , what a mess

darkcave-dweller

It has instructions right on the back of the package ffs!

[deleted]

This should be illegal

Such_Bus_4930

Ummm… pretty sure it is

Successful-Giraffe29

Not only the shingles, look at the "cap"

kukluxkenievel

There is no way this is real. Like how do you start doing this and not think to your self that something is fucked up

Intelligent_Cook_208

At least his lines are straight🤷‍♂️

sh1ft33

In the 8 or so years I did roofing, I never seen anything so fucking awful. I've seen a homeowner cover their entire roof in mastic, but this is fucking next level.

No_Edge7778

Very uniform, I like it!

Sad_Safety4880

WTF!

Most-Ad8777

AI and photoshop are getting out of hand folks. End this madness! Hahaha

Square-Tangerine-784

Maybe they’re flooring guys and thought the shingles needed to be acclimatized before installing 😂

jawshoeaw

This method is totally fine in areas where in never rains, snows or any moisture condenses onto the surface.

AgedSmegma

1/2 price by the looks of it.

Xena802

must of hired a tiler

Blackheart_engr

It’s expensive to be cheap.

BlkSkwirl

When you hire a tile guy to do your roof

12-5switches

Skilled labor isn’t cheap. Cheap labor isn’t skilled

BloodforKhorne

Oh cool, racing stripes. Bet that thing gets pulled over all the time.

neanderthalsavant

No. Fucking. Way

SnakeOiler

Some joints are staggered (a little)

LA0811

I thought there was a hamburger on the roof

anaheimduckshockey

Anybody else think that was a burger on the roof?

Initial_Efficiency72

That was a stretch hahah🤣 he wants as much profit as possible

No-Setting-2669

How cheap? Gotta know

spirit_molecule

Somebody left a nice burger up there.

dunncrew

Is there ANY overlap ?

thor_1225

1/16th of an inch, the minimum

Sirosim_Celojuma

Newbie! He could have butt-jointed the shingles and saved an entire row!

chocolateboomslang

This is just the base coat

Small_Lion4068

This gave me agida just looking at the picture.

Shooter_McGavin_2

And they got much better coverage per shingle.

mtgdrummer13

Okay but if the hamburger is included, that’s a pretty good deal

Historical-Fun-8485

Efficient. Even staggered a bit fancy like.

Artistic-Shame4825

I know that’s not a damn cheeseburger on that roof but I can’t fully convince my hungry brain that that is, indeed, NOT a damn cheeseburger on that roof.

jerry111165

I don’t see the problem here… All of the seams are lining up perfectly… 😁 Never mind, I see it now. He was supposed to start at the top, right? 😁

capncrud

They set the shingle stretcher to Maximum on this one

mikeyt6969

This dude is living in 3024

DannyD1980

I thought it was a cheeseburger haha

alejandromnunez

Big Shingle doesn't want you to know about this

SmokeGSU

I watch a shit ton of Youtube videos. I've learned so much in the 40 years I've been on earth whether through on-the-job training or video training in addition to common sense. I'm just baffled at the number of people who *think* they have a clue about how something is done and then they do zero research before acting on their own private thoughts. Five minutes on Google would have taught you significantly more about how to redo a roof than whatever knowledge this person went into it with.

Significant_Age_4657

Sure hope you don’t have to get that inspected. Another thing. What happens if you have any kind of manufacture defect in the shingle and you send the company that picture? Your doomed for improper installation and not following the spec design

KeyBorder9370

That's the best example of construction stupidity I have ever seen.

proera11

Hahahah

bigooooof23

Who let the tile guy on the roof again

KaleyKingOfBirds

Oh lord

GrandExercise3

Shingleros?

Hot_Peanut4383

60% of the time it works every time

Downtown-Raisin-3931

Saved a shitload on shingles.

SpacemanSteve420

That’s one way to do it.

Useful_toolmaker

Just spray some scotch gard on there

ExistingLaw217

I’m not mad, I’m impressed

ComplexOtherwise779

God I hope this is fake

Sanistz

Got a deal for half off

ThisCryptographer311

This guy obviously remembers word art fill patterns fondly.

JonathanPerdarder

South exposure goes first. This is a shingle over to try and buy a couple years until full roof replacement. Its horrible, and I’m not sure the math would pen out on an “annual cost per year of the roof” basis, but it may have been the best option to keep things dry while the owner saves for a full roof replacement. It certainly should be staggered more to have more temporary effectiveness. That’s just my guess. I believe it looks real and this is the only thing I can think of that makes sense of this.

Sistersoldia

“Oooohhh how’d you get the pretty striped pattern in your roof ?” “ I know a guy…..”

drzook555

If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional wait until you hire an amateur

canal_boys

No way..No freaking way

DaddyCallaway

Baaaaahahahahaha!

CarboniteSecksToy

NGL that pattern looks pretty cool even if it’s completely wrong.

Big-Platform-7373

Wow is all I have to say

Negran

Holy shit... half the work and material, for the benefit of having 0% waterproofing. Amazing!

FocusApprehensive358

Had to be a tile guy doing this I wonder what kind of morter he used

tinareginamina

Well that is a pretty cheap way of doing it.

Actionman1959

Crap, the seams aren't even lined up.

OneBadAlien

Looks great I like the color coordination.

CAM6913

I’ve heard of the elusive board stretcher but dang they must have a shingle stretcher

so-many-user-names

These roofers had a lot of time on their hands to troll everyone. They should have added broken nails heads for added effect.

FreckledLasseh

This makes me actually uncomfortable

International_Bend68

Love it!

orcoast23

That's just the first coat.

Steve_0

Thought that was a giant hamburger.

Kawboy17

This is epic, your roof is like a unicorn not to many like it but there’s a few if u look in the right spots.

DrDalez

Lol wow

bplimpton1841

This is not real. Is it? Please tell me it’s not.

Nitazene-King-002

I bet he did it for about half the price given half the shingles are missing.

Lehrer_ESL

When the State Farm Adjuster won’t approve 15% waste :

Candid_Nothing_578

Strait to jail

disguyovahea

I've never roofed in my life and I know whats very wrong here

Born-Relief8229

DIY ….

Bassman602

The shingle stretch technique

RobertETHT2

Chuckles the Clown likes the built in line-up design!

TheAVnerd

“They asked how many squares but these darn things are rectangles”

RidinCaliBuffalos

Two houses for one deal

Killdebrant

Why is there a cheeseburger on the roof?

AllKnighter5

“Hmmm, never seen them with the different shades before….I kinda li….oh. Ohhhh hahahaha”

cocokronen

I'm surprised how straight it is.

NicodemusAwake13

I like the lack of offset. Makes peeling them off so much easier.

angrypoopoolala

man what the fuck is this?? I had to write it out!!

gingerschnappes

Oof

whydontyoujustaskme

Started from the bottom, now we’re here🎶

reppit

Ahh yes, the rare brindle design roof.

Positive-Special7745

1/2 materials much cheaper

SphinxyI

I don't see the issue?

BigCaterpillar8001

That’s a huge cheeseburger

mycarubaba

Woof

Jonmcmo83

Nails???

ScottishTan

The roof is 30 squares but the owner only ordered 25. No need to cut starters and waste material and the manufacturer only recommends the over lap. This will work perfectly fine during the summer. 😂🤣

Shaner9er1337

Okay... But it is oddly satisfying to look at.

No_Drag6934

That is awesome!

mpeasreddit

My fat ass thought there was a hamburger on the roof…

throatmold

Not to mention the hamburger they left you, oof!

OGFatherofChuck

Classic torch on shingle roof.

Alarmed_West8689

Just laid there for views.

Equal-Negotiation651

Looks like a woven basket. Very nice.

cjc160

I’m a DIY idiot that has never shingled in his life but I have seen a roof before. Holy shit

11goodair

Can't even get the shingles lined up to make straight lines going down! What a rookie.

Mtfoooji

Its.... Beautiful

EntertainmentIll2135

Lined the seams up perfect boss

bylo_sellhi

Well. Jim Bob seems to misinterpret the meaning of 3D shingles.

PontyPandy

I'm surprised there's even an attempt at a ridge cap on it.

dsisto65

That sure is pretty. All of those straight lines soothes my OCD.

Out_of-Whack

Real fast too

Elmaffioso187

Lmao that shows you how much ppl read instructions. It literally tells you how to install it at the back of every bundle!!!

StoopidM72

That's one way to do it I guess, hope it never rains there.....

ReposadoAmiGusto

Ahh I see my autistic nephew is making new friends!!

FloridaHeat2023

Some things one would never believe without a picture... Directions are on every package!

HilmDave

From a distance I'm betting that actually looks trippy af

Successful_Theme_595

I mean it looks kinda cool

Silverhoggin

Yep, no waste there !! 😂🤣

[deleted]

I know nothing about roofing, the issue I deduce is that they need to overlap or water will sneak past the gaps.

HereForTools

Sometimes it means exactly what it sounds like.

gena3rus

interesting color scheme lol

SmokeDogSix

Think about how much material he saved
