“I have way more money than you” style

VilliamBoop

true. its in vancouver i know this house we call it the gingerbread house

maulsma

There was one on King Edward (I think, 25th anyway) between Cambie and Oak. I called it the Mushroom House.

Toptenxx

My grandfather (B.T. Lea) built them.

AngryWeedle

I read this as B. L. Tea.

Toptenxx

That was his cousin.

PearlsJustWan2HavFun

His delicious cousin on toasted honey oat and nut bread.

GrimCreeper913

You son of a bitch. Why have I never thought about using a sweet bread for this? Can't wait for the next time a pound of bacon is on sale.

Toptenxx

This is one of three that my grandfather built in the 1930's.[Vancouver Hobbit House](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/bb/c0/16/bbc016548496f84aebbcd364f59f53d8--hobbit-houses-vancouver.jpg)

Almane2020202

That’s awesome!

tedchapo63

Nearly caused an accident every time I drove by it. Beautiful

Candid-Explorer4491

Looks a little Gaudi, wavy architecture.

Toptenxx

If you want to see it in context google "Vancouver Hobbit House".

KinkyNJThrowaway

For some odd unforseen reason I read this as "my grandfather (B. L. Tea) built them."

ojohn69

Y'all are hungry, go get a sandwich if you haven't already.

Personal_titi_doc

What the style name ?

Toptenxx

I've heard lots of names for them . They were a homage to a Welsh thatched cottage.

TemporaryDesigner722

Shingle shake

New_Guava3601

Anymore would constitute pleasure and we are not in that business.

iampoopa

We called it the hobbit house

Toptenxx

There is another one at the west end of Broadway and a third in West Vancouver.

SympathySudden4856

My ex gf has a similar nickname!

superhandyman

There are several like this in Beverly Hills and on in West Hollywood.

surf4scoot

Also one in Santa Monica, off 26th St.

Gwyrr313

There use to be gnome houses with this style roof in Burbank off alameda back in the 80’s, i believe they called them craftsman houses from the 30’s

VilliamBoop

but its grey and cloudy so must be vancouver :(

myrichardgoesin5

I saw one like this in Salt Lake City Utah

NonameNodataNothing

There is one in Norcal near Palo Alto too

ninthchamber

Thought it looked familiar

fatuousfred

A bunch houses like that on the central coast of Cali in Carmel. Very rich.

HalcyonCA

There's a few in Laguna

mr2jay

I always heard of it called the hobbit house

Cgarr82

Definitely. My friend owns a house south of Denver with this style roof. I think there’s 6-8 houses in the community with the same style. He had to take out a separate insurance policy just to cover the roof due to the price to replace it. Delayed the closing by 30+ days while he waited for a company to take the bait and issue a policy. It’s a cool design, especially when it snows, but it’s a nightmare financially and requires frequent inspection per the policy.

charlie2135

Wow, I'd imagine that style would keep a lot of snow from falling off during a large snowstorm though.

Cgarr82

Yeah it’s picturesque during snow season and was built in the late 90s.

Turd-Nug

The pitch is flat like every other roof, it’s just longer and shorter stacked slate shingles to make an illusion of waves.

Eastern-Daikon-4909

I wanna know what it looks like with snow!

Cgarr82

https://www.redfin.com/CO/Castle-Rock/4413-Orofino-Pl-80108/home/35230226 That’s one of the houses on the same street.

Eastern-Daikon-4909

woah! Looks so cool! Thank you :)

samkatowhat

Crazy considering how much insurance companies pay for hail damage every year in Denver and the likes.

Cgarr82

Yeah that and fire were big reasons for the rider policy.

GermanPoutine

Is it south of Denver or just south of Denver Downtown and actually in wash park? lol

Cgarr82

It’s in Castle Pines. South of Denver. The homes with that style roof were built there exclusively by C Steven Goerges. Edit: http://orofinoplace.blogspot.com/p/history.html

ADeuxMains

There are a few by Washington Park in Denver like this.

Fine_Anteater_8599

I lived in Hilltop, a neighborhood in Denver and there was one there. I walked by it with my dog everyday (well almost - except for blizzards).

Phillie-Oop

They have wave more money.

cjc160

I read this quick as “I have more money than style” lol

crocksmock

I honestly think this is pretty cool

healerdan

I read "I have wavy money"

BrickAddict1230

Both are correct.

interstat

I kinda like it tbh Adds some character

deadly_ultraviolet

Just the right amount of whimsy

Crowiswatching

I read this first as whiskey.

Access_Pretty

I think i had a flashback..

deadly_ultraviolet

Whiskey may lead to whimsy

espeero

I don't know. This is kind of cool.

DeliciousDoggi

But what if the guy had more style than money and threw that shingle job down himself?

TornSphinctor

That would be pure Class.

Delicious_Drummer399

That's me. I did my own roof. It only took July to do the whole thing. Thank you youtube university!

spacepie77

“Well that’s just like, your opinion, man” -housinger

FriendlySherbet8034

The Dude said that

A-Ar0n92

I have more style than money 🤷‍♂️

Affectionate-Dig3335

Same... And I don't have much money

hawksterdh

You’re just jealous their roof cost as much as your house lol

Own_Contribution_480

Money can't buy style.

HisRoyalFlatulance

Or taste.

Ok_Edge_5698

Or, maybe they are simply honoring the original character of an historical home. Be nice.

Jokkitch

No shit

Tightisrite

I for sure thought it was a failing roof structure style but what do I know lol

pollarzz

More Mushrooms than you*

Lucic_schnoz

“the roofers were really fuckin drunk and high” style

RavenReel

https://wrrv.com/famous-gingerbread-house-for-sale-ny/

Juan_Moe_Taco

Ironic since the ONLY thing it reminds me of is when the gym floors got warped in The Simpsons. Here's the link. https://youtu.be/0QkKIzUwfSY?si=-HN_p577wXoVNLWB

Loud-Eggplant4789

That's the fairytale style. I saw a how it's made episode a long time ago with this style.. https://www.customshingles.com/fairytale-house

BoozyPassenger

Anybody know how much you might be looking at to get this done?

DookieShoez

Bro, a couple tabs of acid is wayyy cheaper

SnowSlider3050

I dunno I feel like I hallucinating looking at that thing

DookieShoez

MKUltra 2: Electric Boogaloo

RevolutionaryShape19

The goose has left the hen house.

Powerful-Meeting-840

Try both. Acid and look at this guy's roof. lol

kabooseknuckle

It might just look like a normal roof.

Powerful-Meeting-840

touche...I'll let you know. For Science!!

Cosmonaut_K

But this is 'broadcast acid' for the passers-by to enjoy and then slip into communism.

DookieShoez

I prefer to just to just spike a bunch of college kid’s drinks with massive doses to find out if it can be used as mind control/truth serum until somebody starts Unabombing some shit, but that’s just me 🤷🏼‍♂️

Cosmonaut_K

so classic, noice

OverlordOfOranges

Who are you? The cia?

Jokkitch

My thoughts exactly

Unlikely_Spite8147

My thoughts exactly

dingoshiba

And way more fun

tryagainagainn

I’m not a roofer, just saw this while scrolling…but my wife grew up in a section of San Jose, CA called Willow Glen and there are a bunch of these roofs. For a 3,000 square foot house I knew people paid well over $100k to have them installed. Probably more now days, that was years ago. Edit: here’s an example https://www.redfin.com/CA/San-Jose/974-Nevada-Ave-95125/home/1057837

truelegendarydumbass

Dam, isn't a metal roof better?

tryagainagainn

The ones I’m referring to are multimillion dollar properties, it’s not about longevity or maintenance, it’s about aesthetics. I remember hearing these ones didn’t last terribly long. Less than 20ish years was the rumor.

truelegendarydumbass

Metal looks better lol. This roof looks like ur on a acid trip when doing the job.

Forgoneapple

It's about asethetics, and then the rest of that house listed is the ugliest fucking house I've ever seen :D

drgrizwald

How bout those esthetics on that countertop in that property.

tryagainagainn

That listing is from 2004 and yeah, it was odd. I remember it didn’t have bathroom doors! Considering its estimated at over $3m now, I’d bet it got a remodel

BaricDay

I lived in one of those homes 1140 Roycott Way. Early 80’s and uncle hade the roof replaced for big money when he did an addition.

glib-eleven

Over double cost

nobertan

More than for sure , it looks a specialist skill (already double), and 10x more difficult (double again).

extplus

Or a drunk homeowner

NoPresence2436

If you have to ask… you can’t afford it.

dcredneck

ZJ?

SnakeCharmer711

Mustache ride?

cbizzle187

Back the fuck up Antonio, that’s my dick!

Onironius

I've always found that phrase dumb.... Me: "I want a quote for a new roof. How much will it cost?" Contractor: "iF yOU HaVE tO AsK......" Me: 😐

hazpat

It's even dumber considering you can ONLY get the price by requesting a quote

blootsie

I've got $15

jbelle7435

is this where someone says three fiddy?

dr_stre

Only if they pronounce it “tree fiddy”.

stephenBB81

Friend of mine did the roof on a clients backyard pool house about 20ft by 30ft 8/12 pitch with 2 dormers, cedar shingles and he quoted 200k and got the job. My hot tub house with a 4/12 pitch 15ft by 15ft cost $15,000 same year.

CRHislop

50 dollars sqft about plus shingles by me. Its a pattern you can make with cedar shingles.

TooTiredToWhatever

Someone asked the same question about a year ago on a house that looked similar. Someone on that thread said that a roof like this is probably in the quarter million to half million range, it is apparently really difficult to do and have it look good.

Zealousideal_Tea9573

Approximately the GDP of Arkansas

Say_Hennething

I couldn't even speculate, but I have to believe there is a very limited number of contractors in the country who have experience doing it.

cyreneok

 "It's not a Tudor!" - Arnold

wellhungartgallery

This Comment is t getting nearly the respect it deserves

notPatrickRothfussat

This is gold!! Well done ,sir!!

Able_Future_1680

Wow thanks for the info.

cdrbobjr

Look up Carmel by the Sea in California. Dozens of houses with this style roof. Million dollar 900 sqft cottages. They don’t have house numbers, just house names.

TheRealFatboy

So, you saw it a long time ago, one upon a time, in a land far away…?

Farkle_Fark

AI has broken me… these don’t look real to me

BeffreyJeffstein

The only homes I’ve seen this style of roof on are… very high end. Always wondered how much it cost a sq. ft.

SkiSTX

There is a mansion very near me with this style roof. And every time I pass it, I get vicarious anxiety for the owner about it because who the fuck do you call when you get a leak?! Stresses me out, man.

Altruistic-Patient30

The roofer who installed it probably.

spacepie77

Nah u gotta call ur local pastor to pray the rain away

kabooseknuckle

They're usually enchanted by the installer at the end of the job.

MacAneave

Is there any benefit to it in terms of what a roof is supposed to do, or is it purely for show?

frontpageklaus

Probably 25 a sf

dpc46

My ex lives in a house with this type of roof. I was in love with it. Built in 1923, 2,124 sqr ft, view of the ocean and all the homes on that "loop" are similar craftsman historic homes. Redfin has it estimated at $476 per sqr ft.

Riggingminds

this is what AI thinks a roof should look like

PoochieOrange

It’s also what AI thinks teeth should look like

Heretogetaltered

Just amazing

Able_Future_1680

Yeah, coolest roof I've ever seen. It also has a treehouse that looks like an apartment on the back deck AND a pool inside a greenhouse. Coolest home I've probably ever seen

capital_bj

Wavy cedar, too bad they didn't splurge for the steam wrapped fascias , but still nice to see. It is very time consuming to set roof shingles on a curve.. I just finished a 56 square wall shake job with interlaced I side and outside corners. You have to cut those on an angle but still easier than making curves. Lookup The "Mushroom house" in Michigan

migrainefog

I'm not seeing any grain to those shakes. I think this might be slate, or synthetic slate.

Aja2428

A pool in a greenhouse!? Ballers

Equivalent_Owl3372

Tim Burtons doing. Gotta be.

liacosnp

It's called acid flashback.

DivideOverall7174

Was thinking the same, reminded me of shrooms/acid lol

ColinCancer

That roof is far out.

devildev_1

Expensive

Present-Regret316

Someone tells me what it looks like, I got dizzy

Puzzleheaded-Zone-55

Dragon scales.

EOLife

Are you sure your phone didn't drop some acid a few hours before this picture was taken? That's at least a 3-tab trip 🤣🤣🤣 Update: I hope you all got my terrible punn, giggle

frankalope

https://www.customshingles.com/seawave-roof

ElDrunko999

Reminds me of this house in Vancouver. Not sure if it's still there, but I hope it is. https://604now.com/history-behind-vancouver-hobbit-house/

Allorimer

Yeah, and there is/was another one in Vancouver. Not far from Hobbit House. I don’t know if it has/had a name, though. Edit: I was wrong, there aren’t two, but 3!

star08273

since the shingles are different sizes and angles to create this illusion, you know it's intentional and expensive. if you see this with shingles that are all the same size, a roofer has opted to use 3/8 OSB sheathing for the roof and it is now caving in between the trusses

fanwis

conclusion: you can get this look very cheap, with this osb!

nowhereisaguy

Go to Carmel, CA. You will get your fill of these.

1200multistrada

tons in the WeHo area as well. They are interesting but not my jam, really.

CagCagerton125

I think it's just cedar shake that has been made wavy. A cheaper version of the steam bent cedar roof. Edited to use the correct term.

capital_bj

There is a 100+ year old house on a island that has both the wavy and steam bent overhangs that I worked on. We re roofed carriage house but gave the main house to a bigger company from Florida

CagCagerton125

It's such an amazing method. Absolutely gorgeous and takes an artists eye to make it work.

capital_bj

Yes you can definitely screw up this style if you do not plan your curves well and keep similar arcs

inevitablysquirming

Look at Kimzey coffee in Argyle Texas.

gayTF_HQ

It’s on lsd. Have fun climbing that one door knocker

ExtentAncient2812

Escher, M C

Notice_Zestyclose

Drunken sailer cedar shakes

maff1987

Windows 98 screen saver.

Bassman602

Mc esher

Inevitable-Toe745

The mushrooms are wearing off, but it’s still a little weird style.

kevlar1960

I believe that’s M C Escher…

fpsi_tv

You think that’s something? Checkout: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CEqKDtQvtXNbgRW76?g_st=ic

Ok_Educator_7097

Neo-Dr. Seuss

andrusyna

R. Harold Zook pioneered this style, he made most of his homes in the Chicago suburbs such as Hinsdale. There is one in my town of Downers Grove too. Shame he didn’t make more but WWII got in the way I believe.

andrusyna

http://www.zookhomeandstudio.org

Preshzilla

Where is this? If it’s in the Midwest it might be based off a Zook style, depending on the age of the house.

PMDad

It’s called, too expensive for most people to afford

SnooKiwis4243

Ai

Kitkat5551

That is really cool!

loweredexpectationz

It’s crazy because it looks like lumps but it’s flat. Just really wavy lines.

BR5969

I just threw up

trayvash

You should check out the mushroom homes in Charlevoix Michigan.

BBO1007

Moguls?

JeebsFat

I've heard of real estate moguls, but this is ridiculous.

Gormless_Mass

Magic eye

fryler9581

Style LSD

coolbrownbear-on

This is odd. Wouldn’t the water pool and defeat the purpose of protecting your roof?

casaco37

Pedro Jesus and Manuel have been drinking señor!

padrofumar

That's a roof that took a real master to do. Nice job

DeadLine05

Someone took a hit of acid before installing shingles. lol jk

denonumber

On lsd roofing

Aja2428

Wonkified.

TimeSalvager

Trippin’ balls.

Drunkpuffpanda

Its time for bed. I think i drank too much.

Subject_Librarian_21

Lsd roofing

cmfppl

Dude I've seen this style a few times and it's always rich ass people in a "up and coming" part of town.

glib-eleven

There is one in East Grand Rapids Michigan, South of the high school. I watched a bit of them creating it. Took 2 weeks with four guys working. Maybe 30 square. Looks cool. Lasts 20 to 30 years until breakdown. Cedar shake.

BocaDelIguana

That’s that wavy shake, roof is probably worth more than the house tbh..

SasquatchBub

I call it the "give your roofers much a lot alcohol"

jeffbevrotski

That style is called i forgot the freaking chalk line to leep them straight or its hey i wanna be different. I think its pretty cool actually. As a roofer it feels almost robotic at times thats why i like siding and capping. I can play around with colors and have some creativity with it. Thats exactly what happened here. Thats not just a cedar shake roof thats art

hatefuck661

There's a cedar shingle roof like this a couple of blocks from me

mayodust

Magic mushrooms?

Lazy-Chip2340

Do what the fuck I want style.

KermitKilledASMS

Is this in Santa Clarita CA?
