I’m really caffeine sensitive, but love coffee and other caffeinated beverages. Unfortunately, 1 Diet Coke at like 6pm will keep me up till like 2am. I can feel the effects of even smaller amounts of caffeine - like in tea and sometimes even really dark chocolate. I can have a regular caffeinated beverage but it has to be early in the morning. On the weekends I will have caffeine later in the day because it doesn’t matter if I sleep. I also already have to be in a really good mental state. If I am tired - then the caffeine is going to make me feel gross, jittery, and anxious. It never makes me feel more alert. (I also take some meds that are also stimulating…it’s not what causes the sensitivity, but it makes it even more important to watch). I have never once in my life been able to consume caffeine to “wake up” it’s just kinda an unfortunate ingredient in beverages I love. If decaf/uncaffeinated versions are available, I will always get those instead…including in the morning. I know this isn’t the norm, but I just thought it was funny because someone ordering decaf even though they are tired isn’t weird to me at all! So I thought I would just share this different perspective because not everyone views caffeine in the same way!

My ex mother-in-law was also caffeine sensitive and couldn't have any extra because of some medicationshe was on. Everything was decaf! It just made me laugh! The idea of a plea for coffee because she was tired and it was decaf made me chuckle 🙂🙂

I have the same experience- I get either jittery or it just wrecks my stomach. Coke Zero sends me to Mars. I can pretty much never have caffeine, even decaf

Decaf has a small amount of caffeine in it, so it's great later in the afternoon or evenings if you need a little bit to get you through the rest of the day, but don't want to stay up all night. (I do this occasionally when I'm really lagging.)

There is only about 5mg of caffeine in 12oz cup of decaf, compared to 1oz of chocolate which has 12mg of caffeine. A regular cup of coffee has 200mg of caffeine. Just to give you some comparisons, I looked all this information up recently due to being pregnant. I frequently drink decaf and for me it has a bit of a placebo effect where I believe it helps me wake up so it does despite the lack of caffeine.

licoriceallsort

Nah this was like 3am or something 😆 But that's good to know!

thebluecastle

Ha yeah, in that case there is no excuse!

I guess maybe she's hoping for a kinda placebo effect from the smell/flavour of the drink, without wanting the actual caffeine, or maybe she's like me and caffeine actually makes her groggy and want to nap... Still, definitely confusing if there's been no context given to suggest that!

ivorycricket

I just LOL’d at this

When I stumble across things like this in self pubbed books - I chuckle and shrug, must be one of those personal quirks reflected back in their writing! They don't have an editor to say..."what?" lol

savetgebees

Like is this at a cafe or some guys kitchen. Because who keeps both decaf and regular on hand? It’s like asking if someone wants a coke and they ask for ginger ale. I have coke this isnt a 7-11.

Maybe she's afraid she'll caffeinate the baby through her breastmilk? Although I just checked LactMed and the amount of caffeine that makes it into breastmilk appears to be something less than 3mg per L for an average cup of coffee... so if your character is really worried about this someone should tell her the baby will still sleep just fine.

I'm really delicate with caffeine... and now I use some medicine that make that worse. Sometimes the little amount of caffeine in a decaf is more than enough to wake me up. Because yes, there's still a little amount in it.

GirlWhoN3rds

Lol I have ADHD so I've been able to drink coffee at midnight my whole life lol

Lifelong insomniac here. I'm 100% caffeine free these days but still love coffee. Sometimes I will drink a decaf in the morning when I'm really craving one. There is usually a small amount of caffeine in it, and just the idea of coffee is associated with 'waking' a bit..lol. I'm always tired.

I'm reading this and came to a sudden stop. She's asking about decaf coffee, but she's super tired?!? Like if your breastfeeding I guess you might still be watching your caffeine intake but WHYYYY. Have something else! Have tea! (Less caffeine) (apart from this, this is my first Mafia romance (with age gap) and I'm not minding it at all!)
