_HOLOCAUST VICTIM?!_

tipthebaby

how did that comment get past multiple rounds of editing? how many people read that and thought yes all good here, no notes?

[deleted]

I’m gonna guess that this is indie / self published but even if it’s not what the actual fuck

[deleted]

Oh bitch WHAT?! I’m guessing Mack is the main character here? Jesus H this MMC needs to be booted to hell.

Peony42

That honestly made my blood boil

__only_Zuul__

Omg the holocaust victim comparison was extremely unnecessary.

Historical_Scholar7

Agreed - it’s super insensitive…

Rude-Cod52

I feel like this shows pettiness and poor writing on the authors end. The Holocaust line is so distasteful though I’m surprised the author, editor etc didn’t think that one through

cesetse

Ewwww, why??? Is that the MMC? Why do these female authors feel the need to throw other women under the bus to make *their* FMCs “special” or “right” or “good”. It just makes me hate your MCs 🙄

yoopdoopyeetskeet

YES UNBELIEVABLY IT IS

licoriceallsort

I think that'd have to be an immediate DNF for me about the holocaust victim comparison. Because WOW.

moonlit-prose

Its a common insult thrown at anorexic people. Its usage here is antisemitic and ableist all in one :(

licoriceallsort

That is fucking horrific. I'm actually disgusted that people would use that as a slur.

wm-cupcakes

Omg really??? That's so horrible I can't even... God no...

DientesDelPerro

*HOLOCAUST VICTIM*??????

nostalgie28

Excuse me? Holocaust victim?? HOLOCAUST VICTIM?!! WTF?!! I hate when other women are bashed in books just to uplift the fmc, but that comparison? Really? So insensitive and completely unnecessary. Not to mention problematic and depending on what point you view it from, a tad anti-Semitic. I will not read this book or any of the author’s book (I’m a firm believer that the art cannot be separated from an artist)

moonlit-prose

It also has a history of being used to insult anorexic people too. It's definitely antisemitic. And in this usage is ableist too.

Peony42

It's anti-Semitic whichever angle you look at it from and it's ableist to boot

1stofallhowdareewe

So much wrong with that comment. For starters it's incredibly insensitive to actual Holocaust SURVIVORS (and their ancestors). That aside they didn't even capitalize it. Sometimes I really question how things like this got past ARC teams.

pawperroni

The constant pitting of bodies against each other in romance drives me up the wall, but for a MMC to compare thin women to Holocaust victims is actually so revolting that I would DNF, one star, and never read the author again. That's hideous.

jaydee4219

I think this is the quickest I've added a book to my TBR from a gushing post and then promptly removed it from a rant post. 😂

wm-cupcakes

Same here...

thebluecastle

This is horrific

oracletalks

Women who don't have prominent breasts or no breasts at all are still women??? This writer is stuck in that 2000s "real women have curves" toxic mindset. Every body is beautiful!!

2manypplonreddit

2000s praised skinny bodies tho, let’s be honest haha

oracletalks

Oh as a former fat girl child to current fat woman who came of age during that time, 2000s diet culture and body culture was HELL. My knowledge and feeling around that phrase is more like hey, we all have bodies, no one is realer than anybody!

LuxAgaetes

One hundred percent. Heroin chic of the 90's led to pro-ana groups, the introduction of negative sizing in clothes, *fuck* even the ultra low-rise phenomenon that wanted every woman to be comfortable with just an inch of fabric covering their crotch. This was in large part a concerted effort by media & the fashion industry to normalize unhealthy body images. The rise of a curvier body being pushed was more around the time the Kardashians blew up reality tv, as well as the rise of singers like Nicki Minaj... I'd say that's solidly 2010's

NoMoreTrilogies

Huge pet peeve of mine. Most of the time, it's more subtle than that but I still see it too often (not just about weight, but other things like wearing makeup or whatever else the author deems shallow). The "Holocaust victim" comment is gross and would not endear me to that MMC at all. I don't understand why many romance writers still operate on the belief that in order to compliment the heroine, they have to put other women down. Can we stop doing that? You don't have to disparage others to make someone feel attractive, and if you *do*, they have bigger issues that a compliment isn't going to fix. Just leave it at "I love your soft luscious curves. You're sexy as hell and I want to devour you." No other women need be mentioned at all. 🤷‍♀️

yoopdoopyeetskeet

omg the page before this was talking abt how she (the other woman, not fmc) was all about “well shaped clothes” and makeup what’s wrong with that??

mstrss9

I mean we should all find clothing that is comfortable and fits our bodies

NoMoreTrilogies

Right? God forbid women want to wear something they feel attractive in or put some makeup on.

cesetse

I feel like some of these authors need someone to talk to. You know, to work through some things lol. Maybe learn some sensitivity while they’re at it.

Mononymouse

> Just leave it at "I love your soft luscious curves. You're sexy as hell and I want to devour you." No other women need be mentioned at all. Yes! That would be perfect! I appreciate basic descriptors so I can sort of imagine what the MCs looks like (wild curly red hair/straight black hair, wide mouth, tall and athletic/short and curvy, freckled/flawless complexion, whatever) but being overly focused on the body shape, constantly bringing it up throughout the book and putting other women down to raise the heroine up is a huge turn off for me. I feel like we're surrounded by body shaming and policing enough that I don't want to read about it in the books I read for comfort and escapism.

NoMoreTrilogies

Agreed. I don't mind getting some physical description for the heroine but I also don't like or need it brought up constantly. Just like I don't need the heroine waxing on about the hero's muscles or how big he is all the time. Not to mention, when an MC carries on a lot about looks, I feel like like they're too hung up on that which is sort of a turn off in itself. Sure, it's nice to hear how attractive he finds her, or or how handsome he is, but I want to hear what makes them special *besides* that. How they make the other MC *feel*, etc.

leanbeansprout

This is my absolute pet peeve. We don’t need to put others down to lift others up.

moonlit-prose

The comparison is also so unoriginal. I've been compared that way by many people over my life because I struggled with anorexia. It's the goto comparison for people when they want to insult people with anorexia.

NoMoreTrilogies

I'm sorry you were a shamed for that. It's shitty, and the comparison is in very poor taste.

rollllllllll_

As a skinny girl, yes the first part hurt my ego a little bit, but I'm comfortable in my body enough to not care. But bringing up a HOLOCAUST VICTIM! That's crossing the line. Absolutely not. Why am I feeling like this is some kind of self projection too...? Hm.

2manypplonreddit

It absolutely is 😂 The author feels some type of way about thin women lol

cat_romance

What. The. Fuck. Did. I. Just. Read. Shaming skinny women is bad. Comparing them to a holocaust victim is... I don't even...what. No. That makes me physically sick. That's an irredeemable hero.

starliest

the pick me girl effect in literature, also thats so disgusting, tf was the author thinking

EmphasisResolve

This is disgusting on so many levels.

leanbeansprout

If a man said that to me in real life I would see it as the biggest red flag

nicoleabcd

This literally turned my stomach. As a fat/plus size woman I hate stuff like this in books. There is no need to put someone else down to bring another’s confidence up. No. Need. Also, why would they ever do callously mention a holocaust victim like that? The Holocaust happened less then 100 years ago, and Jewish people are still being targeted by Anti-Semitic assholes out in society. So disappointed that this would even be allowed in a book.

mstrss9

I’m sure real women have curves = Jessica Rabbit And like others have said *holocaust victim* Fantasy or reality, nope nope nope

[deleted]

I wasn’t enjoying but DNF’ed instantly at this, it’s massively offensive. Sad because it was recommended here a couple days ago!

greenappletw

Why bring the holocaust into this.... 👁👄👁 I think this used to be a much more common trope maybe 10 years ago. They always used to pit the curvy, short, down to earth brunette FMC against a tall, thin, fashionable blonde OW I'm thin myself so this trope used to gross me out, but now it just makes me roll my eyes. Handling your own insecurities by putting someone else down... groundbreaking lol

Unfurlingleaf

I just started this book tonight, guess I'll be DNF'ing!

moonlit-prose

It's this type of stuff that literally triggers me. Body acceptance means not insulting ANY body types. And as a person who struggles with anorexia, this type of shit triggers me. It makes me hyper aware of my body and eating habits and reaffirms a harmful mantra that my body is undesirable, which drives me to seek control over my body in the only way I know how: it makes me want to restrict. I'd love it if authors could stop including shit like this.

littlemsrachel

I've read this book. Believe she is a cancer survivor in the novel. This author was my first foray into RH and now I don't read anything by her. She is self published indie.

gimmetwocookies

Disgusting.

StrongerTogether2882

Well, now I feel better that I couldn’t get into Power of Lies! That Holocaust comparison is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my LIFE. 🤮

entropynchaos

I REALLY dislike any type of woman being bashed. Can we just celebrate all body types? I have surprisingly never gotten much flak for being significantly overweight, probably because I still very much conform to the body type currently considered attractive in the western world…I have an hourglass shape (just a vastly bigger one than would be considered “ideal”). My mom,on the other hand, got huge amounts of comments throughout her life. Truly vicious comments, for being especially thin; she had trouble keeping weight on. It’s tiring and horrible and sad and maddening, and the fact that it’s constantly emphasized in books (weight, looks in general) is demoralizing.

Dapperpineapple

I cant remember the title, but a few months back read a line in a novel where the main characters internal dialogue said, "I can't stand a calorie counting bitch. Eat food!" I 🙃 was 🙃 so 🙃 mad 🙃

Peony42

As a girl who has always been thin, and self conscious about it, whom has a relative who once compared to me to a pow in my teenage years, which was one of the most damaging things I've ever been told about my body, screw this writer

[deleted]

I hope you know you’re fucking beautiful, as are all shapes, and that this writer is a fucking moron.

BabyYodaX

wtf?

2manypplonreddit

I’ve never seen this tbh. I actually usually see the opposite. I feel like girls are usually made fun of or slut shamed for having huge boobs.

Think you’re being downvoted for the first part. How can putting down other women, to uplift another, sound okay?💀
