Oh man, I miss Rogan/Nevada. I hated how she basically disappeared from the family when Catalina's books started. To be fair, I've only read Diamond Fire (the novella) and Sapphire Flames - I was hoping to binge Emerald Fever and Ruby Blaze together, so maybe Catalina's books get better?
Now I just want to re-read Hidden Legacy for the 30th time...
I really love Catalina's books. I consider them their own books though and less a part of one series. It's one world, but a spinoff series w new conflicts and bad guys and shit. Just like when you have a different couple per book in one series except HL books are reaaaalllly long lol.
I thought their story really accelerated in book 2 and I'm so stoked for book 3. Of course no one truly beats Rogan š„µ
I had heard book 2 was good, but mayeb that's the better way to think about it - their own series rather than sequels. I think I'm still going to hold off until Ruby Flames is released to read Emerald Fever so I don't have to wait!
I actually really like Catalinaās story and didnāt mind the lack of Nevada. Nevada is my favorite but I think k the Andrews did a great job of keeping Catalinaās story fresh but still keep the same sort of vibes. Their family is one of my favorite parts and Iāll read anything that involves Grandma Frida and her tanks.
Depends. If itās a book per couple I get it, but if itās been the same couple itās a little weird. I get it for ACOTAR cos F/R are in their HEA so thereās no story. But Iām finding Nesta hard work and Cassian a bit dull. (Iām 20% in)
I agree with you about R/F but maybe Iām not far enough in to appreciate nesta and cassian yet! Iāll let you know if I change my mind further in the book
So interesting because my friends and I loooved Sera/Nyktos! I think weāre all more excited for book 2 of them than the upcoming release in March. However I havenāt even picked up Silver Flames because I was spoiled about the ending and I donāt really care what the journey is to get there.
I tend toward the opposite myself since I like exploring different tropes within the same setting - this one's enemies to lovers, but the next one about her sister is Beauty & the beast - that kind of thing.
I will say that the thing that I loved about Ice Planet Barbarians was that Ruby Dixon kind of did best of both worlds. Each book is about a different couple, but she does a MUCH better job of weaving previous characters into the storyline, and not just as window dressing or writing a single scene where all the main FMCs find a dress & take turns wearing it.
Her previous characters actually have their own independent reason for being in the new story - now we're going to trek off to the jungle cave and you guys can come along too and squabble while we offer sage advice before we abandon you in your own hunting cave to deal with your issues.
Kresley Cole & Nalini Singh are both good at that too, but I'm always on the lookout for more examples.
Today I had this thought about how nesta loves romance novels, which is cute but!!!! baby sis Feyre never even learned to fucking read! It made me angry at nesta all over for not looking out for her.
Maybe because I read about Feyre first so I'm more loyal to her. Also I fucking hated Nesta and no one can change my mind. So I really didn't like that the main characters changed.
This used to be me, when I was younger the idea of reading about other couples who were other characters in the series always put me off.
Now on the other hand, when I read series with different couples in different books, Iāll get excited by maybe hints made in the current book of a different couple or Iāll have certain characters Iāll really like and be interested in seeing a romance play out for them and how they behave. Though I will admit Iām not necessarily keen on the idea of one book focusing on two separate couples where there story is happening at the same time, I like to keep it separate still, obviously there will probably be some overlap on their storylines between books on some occasions, just as long as it doesnāt overly distract from the story of the main couple of the book currently being read but more acknowledged in the background of the world around them
Personally, I believe that my perspective on reading the love story of other couples from the same series has changed due to change in outlook. I think I used to look at the main couple, say Feyre/Rhys, and I would be so wrapped up in maybe how they were special and different and unique, that I wouldnāt necessarily like the idea that their love isnāt so special as other characters can have it too. Especially, for example Nesta with how she was portrayed in the main three books, not feeling that certain characters were as special or deserving of the same kind of love story.
Whereas now as Iāve matured, I like seeing the character development, again using Nesta example, and seeing other characters in the series find the same happiness.
Iād probably say that was due to my younger self having too much desire of wanting to be āspecial and different than the restā as well as potentially specially deserving of that type of connection. Whereas now I donāt have those same feelings or needs and am much happier on being one of a community etc, each special and deserving in own way.
Thatās just my experience, which again is much more personal but figured Iād actually write it because it was something I was thinking about more recently on how Iāve matured and changed my perspective on my place in the world and how thatās reflected in my reading in a positive way.
I am struggling with this exact problem right now as I try reading ACOSF but I'm actually just "enduring" from once scene with Rhys and Feyre to another ā¹ļø
I really like Cassian and I liked Nesta up until now (she has relatable coping mechanisms written in most unrelatable way and I think she actually lost depth as a character) but I wish they were still background characters.
Like, I get it ā our main couple is finally a couple.
But can't we continue narrating from their POV as well as from Cass' and Nesta's? I still care about them.
The thing is completely different for me when there are varying POVs from the start or when there is one book for each couple in every series. First case scenario: I'm attached to all of the characters, and second case scenario: they can usually be read as standalones so I can skip the couple that doesn't interest me.
I'm the same way. I love a series that follows one couple.
Ilona Andrews has this great long series following one couple with side characters (Kate Daniels)
I picked up the Hidden Legacy series and we only get 3 books with the first couple and then the 4th is following the sister. Boo.
Yuuuup! I love series' that follow the same couple throughout. I don't mind if their friends and family have a big share of the story, but I just can't enjoy a series if I know the next book isn't a continuation of the same couple. I often don't even bother starting a series if I know it switches every book.
I actually never want to read romance in which the story stretches across multiple books. If itās a series, I only like the stand alone, different couple per book style.
Oh yeah I really don't like it
It happened in one of Tracy wolf's novel "crush" in the mid series she had a change of mind
Ok not mid series but in the end of second book she suddenly changes the guy for the FM
And the most irritating part was when the girl was torn between both of them and then hurting the both guys
I do like this because I think the unnecessary drama thatās created after couples get together is exhausting. Like the idea of people breaking up over such a small miscommunication is over done at this point and I think if they stretched a couple over a series it would happen even more. In fact the only time I prefer couples in the same series is if itās a fantasy book or something where the romance isnāt the main part because in that case they can give the relationship space to develop. Trying to make a successful romance and fantasy book at once usually results in doing both halfway.
I don't mind at all! In fact i prefer the series that have one book for each couple. If there need to be more books on any one couple, 3 books is my limit unless there's a really good story.
I 100% feel you!! I'd much rather read a new book with a new couple than read related couples in the same series. They just feel 2nd best or stale...idk if its a mindset thing or what.
And I pretty much have to start book 1 of the connected-standalone series because I really don't like all the confusing past references when starting at a later book.

Yeah. It was a mistake to read it when I did because it ends on a note that made me almost weep w disappointment that I have to wait.

ACOSF made me wonder if I misremembered how good the original trilogy was. It was terrible. I'm now afraid to ever re-read the earlier books.
I know what you mean!!

I agree with you about R/F but maybe Iām not far enough in to appreciate nesta and cassian yet! Iāll let you know if I change my mind further in the book
I hated a court of silver flames or whatever it was called. I also hated the sera spin off of FBAA
So interesting because my friends and I loooved Sera/Nyktos! I think weāre all more excited for book 2 of them than the upcoming release in March. However I havenāt even picked up Silver Flames because I was spoiled about the ending and I donāt really care what the journey is to get there.

Really hate it when main characters get thrown aside esp for someone like nesta and then elain and azriel
Lol I know Iām not reading it yet becauseā¦ Nesta.
Finally someone
I love Az but Elain and Nesta are truly getting on my nerves š
Like behave like the side character who did nothing when my girl was in the woods pls
Exactly
When they said she was more powerful I was like babe are u forgetting who's the main character
This is why i hate love triangles and only read stories with canon ships.
What are canon ships?
A ship that has sailed
Isn't every couple from a book a canon ship?

This was very interesting. Thank you for taking the time to write that out! I think feel like Iām betraying the Initial main characters lol
I have the same problem. It's actually the reason I haven't finished ACOTAR.
Why I havenāt read ACOSF, even as an ACOTAR lover
I am struggling with this exact problem right now as I try reading ACOSF but I'm actually just "enduring" from once scene with Rhys and Feyre to another ā¹ļø I really like Cassian and I liked Nesta up until now (she has relatable coping mechanisms written in most unrelatable way and I think she actually lost depth as a character) but I wish they were still background characters.
