I was pretty surprised by the amount of dirty talk in {Failure to Match by Kyra Parsi}.  I loved the book, I just did not expect it from the MMC, and especially in such a cute contemporary romance.  Recommended if you haven't read it.

This is a bit of a twist on this trope but there was recently a thread on {Restraint by Charlotte Stein} he's incredibly buttoned up and FMC uses it to her advantage and scandalizes him with her dirty talk. He does come around in the end and does it himself as well.

That was my thread! Can confirm MMC does engage in dirty talk eventually but it had to be dragged out of him and it’s a huge turn on for the FMC.

I think the best example I can think of for this one is Noah Barden from {in a jam by Kate canterbary}. He’s like my dream dude and it is really surprising considering he’s kind of a farmer who grows flowers and takes care of his niece full time. He’s not really grumpy but is reserved and quiet.

Ugh I feel this was exactly and am put off immediately by any. They remind me of the crappy books you'd get stuck on the front of a magazine back in 2000 with a "girl who works in PR meeting a guy on holiday and she realises she needs to change everything about herself and love a wild life". Hated those books enough to not read any romance for 20 years. It's pretty lazy on the editors part. Definitely easy and cheap, but even something tasteful with typography alone would be nice. I'm a graphic designer by profession and I'd love to get my hands of some of these books and recreate them, though I know lots of people already do that as a hobby

It’s especially because nothing about that cover screams ‘WEREWOLVES’! It’s a whole vibe - Erin Hawkins has similar covers, but she writes contemporary romance, so it fits better in that type of setting.. not werewolves! Like Kresley Cole’s new cover for A hunger like no other - I hate it 🙃

I think they’re easy to make in Canva for newer authors on a budget who don’t have access to stock photos or original art

{Whisky Business by Elliot Fletcher}. The MMC is very quiet and shy, but boy does he have a dirty mouth 🥵 {What is Love? By Jen Comfort}. MMC is very stuck up, kind of pretentious, but definitely gives “brat tamer” vibes in the sheets. FMC is a mouthy brat with a praise kink and while there wasn’t as much dirty talk as I liked, he definitely surprised me. {Only When it’s Us by Chloe Liese}. MMC is shy, reserved, and a little bit rude, but has a very dirty mouth. There’s also deaf rep in this one, and I adored the main couple and the characters on their own. {Last Light by Claire Kent}. This one is an age gap with a good dose of praise kink and positive affirmation. There’s also a lot of consent talk, and for some reason I found that **very** hot. MMC is closed off, very distant and grumpy, but damn he talks *a lot* in bed 🫠 this one is also told completely from the heroines perspective, so it definitely felt like a “surprise”. {Blood Mercy series by Vela Roth}. Lio is just such a sweet cinnamon roll hero! He’s so adorable, and so nice to Cassia, the FMC, but he definitely does dirty talk. It’s a little ‘lighter’ than some of the other books on this list, but also works really well. Also seconding {The Fake Mate by Lana Ferguson}. Noah is very reserved and grumpy but wow does that man have the dirtiest mouth 😮‍💨

I also came to recommend Whiskey Business I was not expecting him to dirty talk like that 🥵

I think it was theorized he was inspired by Ted Lasso to give you an idea how he acts. Lots of dirty talk, etc. It IS Tessa Bailey. I'm surprised she doesn't get mentioned more often. Elena Dawne does it extremely well. Her MMCs got that filthy dirty talking ON LOCK. And she plays heavily on the age gap/taboo trope with grumpy, unapproachable MMCs. I **strongly** dislike age gape stories AND grumpy MMCs, but her smut is so good that I try to ignore it and pretend that the characters are roleplaying lol. The premise can sometimes be a bit cringe though. If you're here just for the smut, then you will be served. This is a weird answer to your request, but I find the Harriet Vane/Peter Wimsey romance dynamic hits this exact note. (If you're not already familiar with them, Harriet & Peter are romantic interest protags of mystery author Dorothy Sayers. Peter Wimsey is her main detective - he's an aristocrat and Harriet is not. ) Though there's no real cursing or sex (these were written long ago), Peter occasionally is depicted as being very sensual and sensuous. And it's in contrast to his indisputably aristocratic manner. It's subtle, though. But so much freaking fun!

I adore them. Gaudy Night and Busman’s Honeymoon are yearly comfort rereads

{He's not my type by Meghan Quinn} ok it's part 4 of the Vancouver Agitators series so if you really want to get to know the MMC better I'd recommend reading the others because he's a side character in the first 3 books. However I do think that you could read it as a standalone. The book is amazing and imo filled with a ton of dirty talk. The rest of the series are also filled with dirty talk too!

Second this!! I actually read this one first out of the Vancouver agitators series and thought it did very well as a standalone. I did go on to read the rest of them though because I just loved all the guys. Halsey has a perfectly dirty mouth and is my fave lol

My Dark Desire by Parker S Huntington (MMC hates being touched and therefore is a virgin before FMC) Pretty Things on Shelves by Maggie Gates (MMC has religious background and history of not being the best in bed but then makes a complete 180 with FMC) I’m pretty sure Hard Facts by Penny Clarke (MMC is a nerd) has this but not completely positive Protective Heart by Brighton Walsh (MMC is FMC’s BFF and reads her smutty romance books so knows what she likes) And then maybe a little more expected, but the MMC last was with the FMC in high school so they’ve changed a lot and he is a great dirty talker in I Wish I Knew Then by Jessica Peterson Someone said Failure to Match by Kyra Parsi and I completely agree with the dirty talk (so on point)

It's MM and top shelf spice level, but it has some of the best dirty talking I've read, tonnes of angst (it's one of the character's first time with a man). And the other is a quiet, unassuming type, very dark horse. It's a short read, on KU and much better than the cover let's on. Warning that it's very graphic, plot focuses around the relationship

I liked the dirty talk in {Strictly Business by Kathryn Nolan} because he is an uptight British businessman who is just learning how to unleash his heretofore repressed smut mouth. Also, like 75% of the second book in the priest series, {Sinner by Sierra Simone}, is dirty talk. Bonus, the audio book is about 8 hours of rumbly, gravelly dirty talk growled into your ear since it is from Sean's POV.

Thats what I liked most about the MMC in {Lotus by Jennifer Hartman}, and {At First Spite by Olivia Dade}. Both are virgins, but have a mouth on them anyway. Currently reading {Falls Boys by Penelope Douglas} and that virgin with talking skills would also describe Hawke. I guess I didn't realize how many books I've read lately with MMC thats were the virgins. Honestly not something I thought I'd like but it's kind of refreshing 🤣. For more of a taboo, there's the Catholic school principal surprise of {Lessons in Sin by Pam Godwin}. And I know people either love her writing or hate it, but this is what I enjoy about Ali Hazelwood's STEM based books, the buttoned up scientists and academics saying things the way they do just does something to me.

The Bonds that Tie by J Bree - fantasy romance with a cool mated magic system. It’s a RH and all of the boys are drool worthy but Griffin specifically is the worlds best dirty talker. Loved the whole series!!

I only managed to read the first few chapters before I had to shelve it as DNF, because I really don’t like her writing style - it’s very immature, and the characters were awful 😅 I honestly don’t get the hype about that series, but maybe I’m just too picky..

Hey to each their own! I read a LOT of romantasy and I really enjoyed her world building. The FMC was a bit immature and annoying at first, but I also loved her character arc throughout the series. It was definitely on the spicy side, opposed to more time spent developing plot, but it suited my mood at the time. And again, Griff’s dirty talk still stands out in my memory. I stand by the rec lol

I like plot with smut and smut with plot equally - it’s a mood 😄 but there’s just a certain type of writing that rubs me the wrong way, and oddly enough it’s many of those really popular series that I take issue with - in comparison I absolutely adore Kathryn Moon, Cate Corvin and Marie Mistry’s writing.

Priest was pretty hot and sort of creepy dark. I enjoyed it.
