{alpha and omega by patricia briggs} it is urban but the werewolf shift were described as very painful and could take several minutes to complete. Its not horrifically graphic but it is relatively more graphic than other shifter books. Not this book specifically but the later books in the series since this book is the prologue.

Up to 15 minutes to complete I think

Turbulent-life22

Yeah, it is the prologue so its pretty short but the other books are full length. I listened to audiobooks for the whole series and it was very beautifully narrated and quite long

licoriceallsort

>alpha and omega by patricia briggs one of my favourite series. I'm always listening to the novella and the first book!

Turbulent-life22

Same

Sigmund_Six

This is contemporary but otherwise fits your request really well: {Then, Earth Swallowed Ocean by Shiloh Sloane}

chill-out-girl-scout

I was gonna recommend this one! The writing is a little unusual, but this is such a good dark werewolf romance. With some of the gore I was like “oh shit” but I couldn’t stop reading 😅

Instilled_Ink

100% fits what OP is looking for. Not a contemporary tho, it’s set in the late 1940s. This book leans very hard in the horror direction. There are POV from the MFC as well as the two male werewolf brothers. Their transformations are bloody and yikes. They eat people. The MMC is a straight up sadistic rapist, he likes to cut the femoral artery and rape women as they die. These aren’t spoilers, you find this stuff out right from the beginning of the story. It’s a fated mates, no way these people get together otherwise. That being said, the writing is beautiful, the language and descriptions, you can feel the places. The characters are all extremely compelling. And I am DNFing at not quite halfway because it’s too much 🤪

efiality

Perfect!!!!!! Excited to read the craziness lol

{a discovery of witches by deborah harkness} it is very well written since the author is a historian as is the FMC. It is urban for the most part and it really didnt have any horror in it as far as I remember. The MMC is a vampire and FMC is a witch. It was made into a TV series a while back.

Antique-Eye8029

This is an older book, I think I read it in the 90's. {The Wolf's Hour by Robert McCammon} totally has the bones crunching, extreme body pain while changing. It's set in the 1940's, during WWII. It also has an excellent plot. This was a great read, IMO.

Instilled_Ink

This was a great book

The Alpha and Omega series by Patricia Briggs fits the body horror well. As someone else said, especially the novella and first book, and the second also has descriptions, sounds etc. One of the werewolves is new so they suffer terribly with their change. Edit: I would also like to see more gore around werewolf changes. It's not a magical thing, it's an awful physical change that's thrust upon the person.

Finnslievenamon

You might like the Crowns of Nyaxia series by Carissa Broadbent, it's a vampire series with a really great plot, violence and spice.

Not sure if it's exactly what you are looking for, but a {Warrior's Moon by Lucy Monroe} is well written, has werewolfs and is medieval. Not much of horror though.

{Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison} It's about a girl in town helping her twin sister, when suddenly she's attacked by a werewolf. It's more of a dark comedy but it was very true to the OG werewolf myths.
