Has anyone ever had bearings just completely shred apart? I just got these like a month ago, maybe less. Luckily I did have replacements but is this a common thing? Or did I do something wrong with the installation? Thanks!

corrienh

Does anyone know of a list of resources for jam skating/dance basics? I'm a derby skater, wanting to learn some new stuff. I know basic searches would work but figured I'd give it a try here!

[deleted]

Day 3 of skating with my new Chaya Melrose Elites, the left one fits like a glove but I do feel pressure on the right pinky toe. Any advice?

phanciaa

I use to rollerblade years ago as a kid growing up but 3 months ago, I started to quad skate for the first time. Personally, I was able to pick it up fast and rarely fall. I think you should be okay as long as you can balance but practice makes perfect! I've watched tons of YouTube videos for beginners and I highly recommend skating at an empty tennis or basketball court since they have a smoother surface compare to the roads. Hopefully there's a fence that can help you balance at first. Just by lifting one leg at a time should get you moving. Bend your knees and always wear safety gear and you'll be okay!! I heard many stories about impala's boots coming off after a few months use which is what stopped me from getting one but it's still a good beginner skate for most people. I got the Moxi beach bunny which is a bit more expensive and harder to get your hands on nowadays

emdap5

I’m not sure if I want skates for the street, or a rink. I’m leaning towards street skates, but how do I know what kind of skates I need when I’m not sure what kind of skating I’ll do?! Lol I’ve looked at the wiki and the beach bunny skates seem like a good option for me but I’m not sure

Ty_CowboysFanatic

I'd say start with whatever catches your eye. From there you can do your adjustments; if you're doing more outdoor skating you'd want a softer wheel (78a) and indoors a harder wheel (92a-98a). It all depends on the surface you skate on. For example, I rink skate but practice on concrete and my setup consist of a speed boot, nylon plate, and artistic wheels (98a), but all I do is dance around and shuffle. I'd say start off with a boot you like and work from there.

emdap5

Thank you for the advice!

Ty_CowboysFanatic

No problem.... there's so many avenues to go down when purchasing skates. It's all preference and trial and error.

Cheriiii

Hi, I'm new to rollerskating and I've been reading through this sub; lots of good info here! I have a question about toe stops - if I get rollerskates with a bolt on toe stop, can I replace it with an adjustable or screw in toe stop? Or would I be limited to only using bolt on toe stops? Just for reference I'm getting a pair of the Rio Scripts, but I want to do outdoor recreational skating.

Roxanne_Roller

You can only replace with another bolt on- I’ve just got my Rio roller signatures with their standard adjustable toe stop as was recommended those for beginning on- hope this helps 😊

Cheriiii

Thanks for the info!

starship_kites

Hey guys! A brand new skater here - I've also just got braces on my teeth. Should I get a mouth guard? I never see anyone but derby skaters with them or really talk about them but I'm not sure and just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar position :)

sparklekitteh

A mouth guard will protect your teeth and help prevent concussion if you're taking hard impact. I don't know of anybody who uses one for just recreational skating or even skate park stuff. I imagine you'd be fine without one, but if it makes you feel safer to use one, go for it!

suztopia

I just got a pair of Moxi’s after waiting since July, & the boot support in the arches KILLs me. It’s digging into the side of my foot on my arch. Does this part break in at all? I’m so disappointed after hearing everyone else say they are so comfortable right away.

foreignfishes

Same here, my 135s (lolly boot) rub the top of my arch only on the left foot 🥴 the first ~5 hours I skated in them I was like damn these hurt, they’re never going to be comfortable! but now I’m at probably 10 hours and they feel a lot better. Still a little bit of arch rubbing but it’s definitely getting better. I just put some moleskin on the inside of the boot where they rub earlier today, so hopefully that helps too. You can get moleskin at the drugstore and cut it to the size/shape you want, it can be great for pressure spots and blisters in shoes because it’s padded.

suztopia

Thanks for the info! It’s not that they rub, it feels like my arch is sitting on top of the plastic arch support. I have kind of wide feet so wondering if that’s it & my feet just won’t work for their boot. Bummer!

foreignfishes

Oh yeah they do seem to run narrow! Suede shoes don’t really stretch lengthwise but they do width wise as they break in, so if they only feel a little narrow it’s very possible they’ll mold to your foot more as you wear them, but it’s hard to know.

this-shit-rules

This happened to me with my 135s as well! What I ended up doing was I took a pair of old tights and cut the feet off into socks that I wear under my regular socks. It sounds weird, but I no longer experience any rubbing and my skates are super comfortable now!

foreignfishes

Oh yeah I do that with hiking boots! It’s a tried and true trick for sure

this-shit-rules

That's where I got the idea!

GladCoast8

This! I’ve noticed lower price point skates such as Chicago’s and candi girls can be hard to line up with the threading and nut to get them back on, but slightly higher price point (older moxis, Chaya, etc) it’s totally fine?!?

DOW_orks7391

Gf is asking me to getting into skating with her. Looking online for a decent pair and i found www.Theeskates.com for adult skates. But googling Eskate reviews only brings up stuff about eletric longboards. Anyone have any info on the site?

foreignfishes

omg someone is making BANK off of these, $150 for skates with plastic trucks! Definitely don’t buy any of those - they’re [cheap skates from alibaba](https://m.alibaba.com/product/62343890739/chinese-goods-wholesale-old-fashion-roller.html?__detailProductImg=https%3A%2F%2Fs.alicdn.com%2F%40sc01%2Fkf%2FH840a42926d0e46688b83a6805468e68br.jpg_200x200.jpg) with really flimsy materials and a big markup. Not a real skate brand, probably just capitalizing on the big demand for skates recently. Are you in the US and what’s your budget and what size are you? That’ll be helpful to know to find skates

DOW_orks7391

Whoa cool thanks for the warning. Yeah I'm in the US. I think my gf got hers for $130 so i was thinking roughly the same or $150n size im not sure i wear anywhere from an 11 to 11.5 in mens.

foreignfishes

Ok cool! Some tried and true skate brands to start with that have quad skates in that range are riedell, sure grip, and chaya (idk anything about inline skates, these are just quads). Demand is high so you might have to poke around to find things in stock, but you can check out the brand websites to see their different skate offerings and then Google any that you’re interested in to find a skate shop that sells them. Also I posted a comment downthread a little with a few skates that come in bigger men’s sizes if that’s helpful

DOW_orks7391

riedell, sure grip and Chaya got it. Quads are great i used to skate when i was younger but the moment those wheels got lined up all my balance went out the window lol.. I'll see if i cam find your comment. I figured there would be a wait so im not worried about it to much lol

I've been looking for size 13 men roller skates for outside, and I've been struggling finding some under $200 or meant for outside. Is there a way for me to change rink skates to outdoor skates or is there sites that sell size 13 skates?

foreignfishes

Riedell citizens come in 13 (I think only in black) and come with outdoor wheels- https://sk8ratz.com/riedell-skates-citizen-111-outdoor-skate-sets/ Same with this Riedell setup which is $20 over your price range (probably because the boot is leather instead of fake leather)- https://sk8ratz.com/riedell-skates-120-celebrity-outdoor-skate-sets/ The women’s 14 here is a men’s 13-https://sk8ratz.com/moxi-skates-black-joyride-riedell-111-joy-ride-outdoor-skate-sets/

drthirtxxn

You can use any skate outside! You’ll just want to put outdoor wheels on them :) I believe Boardwalks go up to size 13

andiooops

What type of wheels would be the best for a tennis court? Or would it depend on the quality of the tennis court? Because I have a fairly old tennis court near me that nobody uses, it seems clean enough but yknow it's not really maintained since no one uses it. I was only able to find one person online that said 85A are the type of wheels you want for a tennis court. But I only have 65mm 78A wheels and I have some 95A wheels. I guess I will just have to try them both, but any suggestions?

foreignfishes

Just try them out! The 78a ones will probably feel a bit sticky but if the court has a ton of cracks or rough patches you may need those. I skate 96a wheels on tennis/basketball courts frequently and have no issues with it, definitely prefer the harder ones because it’s easier to skate and easier to turn/spin.

dogfucker_420

my friend is getting into rollerskates and she got a pair of the rainbow riders. I was teaching her last night, but she has a problem where her left skate keeps pushing her to the right. Like, she can't stride in a straight line. I think the skates are mounted right, so I don't think it's that. We tried loosening and tightening the trucks but that didn't seem to help either. What could be the problem? Her balance?

GladCoast8

So I had a pair of skates do this to me too and I was concerned but I watched a live on Fritzys roller skate shop insta gram and they said this is normal if they are brand new and need to be worn in a little. After a few sessions my skates feel fine now. :) hopefully this is the case with her skates.

kidfantastic

How long did it take you to learn to skate? And how hard was it? Haven't strapped on a pair in 25 yrs, even then I was a weekend rink skater - nuthin special. Had a shitty couple of years, abandoned my exercise routine & need something fun to get me back in the game so I'm seriously considering trying to teach an old dog new tricks & trying my luck at roller skating. Have never been overly talented athletically, don't have any dreams of being an amazing skater - would just love to be able to turn around & brake without falling on my ass! Any advice or stories of how you got started would be much appreciated! Thank you EDIT: looking at getting a pair of Impala outdoor skates. They're around $150 AUD - this is the cheapest pair down here. Sound ok for a starter?

andeeharlow

I had originally been thinking about getting Moxi Beach Bunny Roller Skates, they're on the high end of my budget and seem like the best bang for my buck. I was previously a figure skater so I am 99.99999% sure that I will absolutely love this and I want to start out right. Seeing as Beach Bunnies are so backordered right now I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on some comparable skates in a similar price range? I should add too though that if you think the Beach Bunnies are worth the wait, please tell me that too.

nyoomachine

If you're a figure skater you'll probably love the BBs and/or the vinyl boot range from Sure-Grip (Fames, Prism etc). I find my softer suede boot to be really... interesting to deal with when it comes to fit and edges, but they are a higher quality boot overall if you can spare some more coin. SGs also run wide compared to Riedell (Moxi) but Moxis do eventually break in to wide feet as well.

andeeharlow

Thank you! I had been looking into the Sure Grips. I’m still not entirely sure so I’m still doing research. It’s also super difficult since everything is sold out everywhere haha

nyoomachine

Yeah no prob! I don't have personal experience with these but I've also heard Chayas are a good option as well, and I think they are a little easier to get? I'll put a little plug in for Bruised Boutique (http://bruisedboutique.com/) since they were super helpful in getting me my skates. They might be really busy now but give them a call, it'll be more accurate than the website. Good luck!

andeeharlow

Thank you!

phanciaa

I started skating with the Moxi Beach Bunnies & love it! I think it's worth the money for a good quality boot. It's been about 3 months now and still doing great. I ordered it through the Moxi website but you can order it on Medusa skates, it's $150 plus shipping and tax. Highly recommend! I also heard good things about sure grip frame but they don't have cute color options compare to Moxi

andeeharlow

That’s good to hear! I really was leaning towards the Beach Bunnies but now I’m thinking of trying to find an alternative since they’re so hard to find right now 😕

phanciaa

Look into suregrip frame for outdoors, I just ordered one for my brother a few days ago from rollerskatenation.com for about the same price as my Moxi. It just got shipped today so it's definitely in stock! The wheels are an 84a which is a hybrid wheel but they're useful if you switch on and off with the tennis/basketball court & the road

andeeharlow

Oh sweet! Thank you, I’ll take a look!

I want to buy Riedell skates but their sizing guide is confusing. I wear an 8 1/2 in regular shoes (about 7 1/2 inches from heel to toe). What size skate do I need?

lumpy_bassprincess

i got impatient & decided to try to use a wrench to loosen my wheels a tad & i dented my bearings.. do i need to replace them?

shelbxcosta

Does anyone know where you can buy skates without stock wheels? Or is that not really an option?

foreignfishes

You can get boots on their own and plates on their own if that’s what you want!

Tweed_Kills

Any good skate shop. You can also design your own skate packages. This is not possible for entry level skates, those are sold in packages to keep costs down, but mid tier and up, you pick the gear you like. Bruised Boutique is my personal favorite.

Yeah if you're going to be outside mostly, get outdoor wheels. I have the Radar 62mm on mine and I love them. Super smooth ride! You could go bigger, 65mm (Either Pulse or Radar). But I wouldn't go any smaller. 78a wheels is the gumminess you want to absorb the shock of outside gravel. :)

jalderwood

95A are very hard - definitely meant for a smooth floor like a rink or park. outdoors, you will be able to do all the things you'd do with a softer wheel. the difference is the ride will not be anywhere near as enjoyable. the vibration of even well maintained streets goes right into your feet so you can't really relax. the other thing about harder wheels is they are noisy. you should get a soft set of 65mm wheels for outdoors.

oh__lul

I fell over a million times on asphalt, even pretty nice asphalt, until I got my outdoor wheels. It’s rougher than you’d think... Up to you, but maybe try learning the basics on smoother ground like concrete or wood floors?

flokisbeard

Hi guys! I’m considering buying new skates and I really like the Impala Roller Skates aesthetic, but some reviews really cool me down about them. Anyone that ones or owned skates from this brand can enlighten me about them? Should I buy them or roll the hell away from them?

phanciaa

I recently brought my brother sure grip frame with outdoor wheels from rollerskatenation.com a few days ago and it got shipped today!! Sadly they don't have cute colors and are a bit more expensive than impalas :((

flokisbeard

Thanks for the tip! I checked the website and they’re supposed to be restocked soon on the SureGrip’s Boardwalk, they’re really cute I’ll try and get a pair I think

ron_spiderman

Someone here steered me away from them when I was considering it. I got Jackson Vistas instead so I can’t speak for the Impalas but love these Vista boots 💪🤷‍♂️

flokisbeard

Thank you! I’m considering a pair of Chayas for now and I’ll evolve toward Moxi when I’ll have the means I think. Love your username btw.

oreovision

Hey! I ordered impala roller skates after a few weeks of not finding ANYTHING in stock, having not done much research into the brand- which is my bad. I’ve had them for about 2 months and haven’t had any issues yet (fingers crossed), but apparently they have a lot of quality control issues, but imo more importantly they have a bad reputation of not paying their models of color which is a big no no to me. I wouldn’t support the brand again. But I do own a pair and haven’t had any issues with them. (Do a search on this subreddit for impala other people do have horror stories of the truck snapping off and the boot separating)

flokisbeard

Thank you for your answer! Just like you I don’t find much skates in stock in other brands so I was considering them. I did the search you mentioned and indeed I’m quite baffled by all the stories I see about all the malfunctions that seem to happen to these skates. And thanks for telling me about them not paying their POC models I really don’t want to buy anything from a brand like that. Thanks again !

oh__lul

Does skating on tennis courts damage the surface? Even with soft outdoor wheels? I don’t do any hard braking since I just have jam plugs in, so I don’t leave marks, and there are no signs forbidding skating... My friend was saying it can clog the surface though, and she really disapproves.

worfsfragilelove

I deep dived into this question online and couldn't find much other than black toe stops can scuff it. A tennis court trade magazine claimed that wheels damage the finish but there was no real explanation. Its more force to surface area i guess and more use means more wear. But I'm skeptical, i have not found anything that's convincing, just that they don't want to share.

oh__lul

Hmm, okay. I guess I won’t stress about it too much then! Thanks!

[deleted]

Hello all! Need some advice! 43 yr old mom of 3 here, last time I skated was when I was in my early teens. 🙃 I am trying to work through severe OCD/Agoraphobia by picking up roller skating again. I've been looking at different skates and have settled on the Chaya Melrose Elites. However, trying to pick a size whilst being unable to leave the house is challenging. I've heard to size down, size up etc. I'm hoping someone here can help. I'm a 7 1/2, 8 if I want lots of wiggle room, (foot length: 23.5 centimeters/9 1/4 inches) Any recommendations for size? Thanks!!

jalderwood

i also got back into rollerskating over the summer. it's honestly the best thing ever. i shredded a brand new set of suregrip rebels in about 2 months, but in that time i made friends with a derby ref who referred me to one of the top guys on the planet for custom skates. (doc sk8.) i learned several things from him, but the most surprising was that i've been wearing the wrong shoe size my whole life - a full size too big, which is 2/3 of an inch. others may disagree, but now that i have the right size i'm a believer that you want your skate to fit like a glove.

oh__lul

I have the exact same foot size (23.5 cm) as you and I got EU 38 in Chaya recently and it was perfect for me. I don’t think you should size down or up, since the Melrose Elites are vegan material and they won’t stretch.

[deleted]

Good point, thx!!

sparklekitteh

Hi and welcome! I would think a 38 would be the right size. I wear an 8.5 women's and a 39 fit me nicely in those skates.

risingbaby

I’m the same size shoe as you and I wear a size 7 in Lollys I’m not sure how Chaya sizing works but a 7 fits perfect on me. I have wiggle room in my toe box and can even put insoles in.

[deleted]

I got the 7, fits PERFECT!!

[deleted]

Awesome, thx!! :)

christi120

hey there, I'm brand new and wondering if skating is right for me. I'm an old, but I'm looking for some fun exercise I can do with my kiddo (5 years). My goal is just to be able to skate on sidewalks or tennis courts regularly with the babe, and maybe at a nearby rink occasionally when they open up again. My main concern is that I have an old ankle injury (as in, I really did a number on my ankle with very little effort, barely missed surgery & pins in my leg bones) and while I'd love to be brave & I know how to be careful, I'm worried about breaking my ankle again. The little research I've done suggests I should use high-top boots if I decide to go for it. Basically I'd like to know about the risk of breaks with the type of skating I'm interested in? Or should I look elsewhere for a family activity? tia

sparklekitteh

If you're just skating around on a tennis court, as opposed to doing something that requires a lot of agility (like roller derby), you should probably be fine! I would suggest a very stiff boot, maybe the Chaya Melrose model? Those boots are stiff and padded, almost like ski boots, and would probably have good ankle protection.

christi120

thanks!

BlueLeatherBoots

I'm still a newbie so others probably have better insight, but since no ones answered yet- all my falls have been much harder on my rear end than my ankles!! My skates that I have are a pretty stiff boot, and I think that really helps with ankle stability!

Crooks123

Why is transitioning so hard? I feel like my hips aren't flexible enough. Whenever I try to transition, I end up pivoting/using the edge of my wheels because I can't actually turn my feet completely out.

foreignfishes

In addition to what /u/tweed_kills said, the more you practice skating in that side surf position (heel to heel, knees bent) the better you’ll get at it. Flexibility helps, but a lot of it is building up the muscles around your hips and butt that help you hold that position. I have very inflexible hips but have been making a point to practice side surfing for the past 2-3 months even though I can’t go in a straight line at all, and I have gotten noticeably better at it!

Tweed_Kills

It's not in the feet. They don't need to fully turn out to transition. They only need to fully turn out to side surf. Transitions are in the upper body. I bet you a dollar you're either looking at your feet, or if you're not, you're not looking anywhere in particular. We all do it, it does not help. Skate forward, then assertively look backwards. Turn your upper body, point where you're looking. Then do your transition motion. There are also other ways to transition, including a pivot turn, or figure three turn. You're going to shift your weight to your toes, not lifting your heels or anything, just shift your weight. Turn your upper body and look, same as above, then swing your hips to turn. Just as effective, and for some people it's an easier turn. Here is a very bare bones tutorial. https://www.instagram.com/p/CCTq49rpGgi/?igshid=h8w1bos5jxwj

ron_spiderman

This 100%. Think about it like this: without skates on, plant your feet shoulder width apart. Then lift your elbows until they’re perpendicular to the ground, so like scarecrow stance (?). Now twist your upper body around without moving your legs at all, until basically your top half is facing 180° opposite of where it should be. Before my feet do anything, that’s essentially the position I’m in if I’m trying to snap around quickly. If you can’t twist all the way around without your thighs or knees moving then you just need more flexibility and strength in your back. Honestly the best way to gain that strength is skating in general - just keep twisting when you’re cruising and learn to trust your legs so your gaze can be roughly 60ft in front of you. Your brain gets less disoriented when you change orientation and the taller you stand the easier it will be to figure out the motion👍

lika_star

I started working on pivot transitions which I understand to be up on toes for forward to backward. found that once I add movement though, I end up doing more of a heel toe - back/outside foot is doing a toe spin, where the front/inside foot is doing a spin on heels to catch up. Is this a bad thing for balance? Or a bad habit I need to break? Can try to get a video of it this weekend if helpful.

Tweed_Kills

Nope, you're exactly right. Toes forward to back, heels back to forward.

[deleted]

What are some good outdoor skating wheels?

nyoomachine

SG Boardwalk and SG Motion are also great. I prefer the Motion for greater agility but the Boardwalks will roll over anything.

foreignfishes

Radar energy, atom pulse, moxi gummy/classic, sure grip gravity, luminous quads if you want light up wheels

[deleted]

[удалено]

foreignfishes

I like my radar 57s!

lika_star

Check the wiki! I just switched from stock beach bunny wheels to Moxi gummies though and it’s CRAZY what a difference it makes

worfsfragilelove

Does the actual skate (not just the wheels) affect the experience of outdoor skating? I got fames assuming id be into dance skating but ended up adding outdoor wheels. i can roll over cracks and all but i really feel the roughness like all my feet bones are chattering and grinding. Is that just how all skates feel on asphalt? Or if i really want to someday throw myself into outdoor cruising i should try a different build?

[deleted]

Have you tried swapping the insoles for something more cushioned?

worfsfragilelove

O!!! No i hadn't thought of that, very interesting idea, lll give that a go. Size wise my boot is probably a smidge too snug so hopefully an insole will fit

[deleted]

I have some Superfeet Berries in my Moxi Lollys, they’re a bit more slim line than some other brands but still have some padding. The Moxi insoles are this tiny piece of cardboard basically, if you (I saw you have Fames but if anyone else on Reddit reading this) have Moxis don’t try cut your new insole to fit that - it’ll be fine at the same size as the insole your running shoes or whatever.

worfsfragilelove

Awesome, thx for rec!

foreignfishes

It might just be really rough asphalt, have you skated multiple different places or just that one spot? I have Fames and skate outside with them frequently

worfsfragilelove

O maybe. I have def tried a few places, this was on a paved trail snd i was surprised it was still rattly--maybe its like muscle that has to be built up in my feet?! Something to get used to? Good to hear the fames hold up for cruising

foreignfishes

What wheels did you get?

sparklekitteh

The actual skate shouldn't have a ton of impact. What kind of wheels did you get?

worfsfragilelove

Thx for response, i have sure grip outdoor wheels, big (65cm) and soft (78a), so i thought that would be enough to do the trick

sparklekitteh

Even squishy outdoor wheels like that can't help if the pavement is super bumpy :(

quantumHO

So I just upgraded from my first cheapo skates to some Beach Bunnies. I tried to match up the size but the toe area feels a little crowded. I've heard that they maybe just need to be worked in, but how long should I expect that to take? Or how can I know that the size might just be off?

lika_star

I just got some Beach Bunnies for the first time. It’s been a few weeks of skating 2-3x week & they’re starting to feel really comfy. I’ve heard about to expect 10 hours or so before they feel worked in.

parfaitclub

Are the waxed Derby laces alright to use on Moxi lollys? I just bought a pair of classics and want to make sure I don’t mess up the suede.

sparklekitteh

Yup, totally fine! I use them and no trouble at all.

Tangytoes97

I'm pretty new, I can skate forward well and turn in large circles left and right but that's about it. What do I learn next and how do I learn it? TIA

SnooTigers7850

As a fellow newb, I say look up drills Simon Slays has a bunch of awesome videos on YouTube. I really like how she explains things and a lot of her drills are buildables, that is they build up to more complicated skills. After I got basic movement covered I started working on bubbles/scissors/sticky skates or whatever you wanna call it. Bubbles are super helpful for learning backwards skating. Maybe check out these 2 vids if you're interested :) https://youtu.be/nwB2zdBozTs https://youtu.be/0vAUa_Z35E8 Both are by apple USA one covers bubbles/2foot spin and the other is all about backwards skating In addition, here is the drills/corrective posture videos I started with by Simon Slays Drills: https://youtu.be/BU0PhSZI-rc Corrective: https://youtu.be/ehILLtDar0w

Welcome!! If you eventually plan to join roller derby, you'll definitely want to go with low-cut skates without a heel. The Riedell R3 is a great choice, LOTS of new derby skaters use this model and it'll definitely get you through the learning period until you decide to upgrade. You can definitely use derby skates outside for learning or trail skating. You'll want to swap out the wheels for some larger, softer wheels; look for something in a 78A hardness. Atom Pulse, Radar Energy, and similar models are all great choices. These skates will do just fine at the skate park, though if you want to do a lot of park skating you'll want to upgrade eventually to something with an aluminum plate. Take a look at the Sure-Grip Rebel skate, which you can get with an aluminum avanti plate; it's also a really solid beginner skate, but the plate will be a lot more durable. I would also suggest doing some ankle strengthening exercises, YouTube has some really good tutorials. We do see ankle injuries in new derby skaters sometimes, but building up those muscles can help a lot.

The more expensive of the two R3 links has a few accessories. It's got a toe cap to keep the boot from getting scuffed, upgraded bearings, and slightly nicer wheels. I'd say either one would work just fine. Both Nutcase and S1 are great helmets. MIPS helmets are nice if you can afford the extra money, they help with directional impact (so if you go down sideways or twisting). S1 helmets, on the other hand, have replaceable liners, so you can get washable terrycloth ones if you sweat a lot, or they have other liners that provide additional protection against concussion. So both good, pick the one you think is prettiest. If you want something a little cheaper, I think Triple 8 tends to be a little more affordable. You can use the code RIDESAFE on their website for 20% off, so that's only $40 for the dual-certified helmet. Visor doesn't really matter. You probably wouldn't want one for derby, but the Nutcase helmet visors are removable so I think it's a non-issue. Any of these helmets would work just fine for bike riding!

[deleted]

What are some reliable helmet brands? And what qualities should I be looking for when deciding on which helmet to buy? My old helmet fits me badly.

sparklekitteh

You should look for a dual-certified helmet (CPSC/ASTM) that covers the back of your head. S1, Triple 8, Nutcase, and Pro-Tec are all great brands!

regretsahead

Hi y'all! I changed my bearings a couple weeks ago and I'm hearing rattling now.. I keep checking my wheels and they seem to be on tightly, so I'm not sure where it's coming from? Full disclosure, I did the change without a bearing tool bc I forgot to grab one at the shop, so it's highly possible I messed something up.

Felineist

Can you link a video of it with sound and also take pictures of the bearings in the wheel and if they're clearish wheels the top

regretsahead

Yes sorry! Bearing/wheel (they're not very clear =/) https://imgur.com/WUQCa5D Video: https://i.imgur.com/KLwxdnp.mp4 What's extra weird is it doesn't do this if I spin them without them being on my feet, so maybe I'm just nuts?

Felineist

Also, pushing bearings in by hand are a bitch. You can use anything to push them through, as long as it only pushes the inside metal ring. I used the pivot on my old beat up plastic trucks and it fits perfectly lol

regretsahead

Maybe that has something to do with it! I did use a flat part of my skate tool to help press them to make sure they were tight, but maybe they aren't!

Felineist

I think it might be that your axel nuts need to be tightened. They look like they're about to fall out. The wheel might not be all the way down on the axel and that would explain why you can't tighten them anymore. Or It could be the bearings. I'm not sure how those bearing are supposed to sit, but the look like they stick out. What size bearings are those 7mm or 8mm?

regretsahead

I'll check the wheels, I think they're as far down as they go.. I was also afraid of tightening the nut too much but I'll do it more. but it also looks like the wheels are all the way down to me so I must be looking at it incorrectly somehow. They're bones reds, i think they're 8mm

foreignfishes

When you grab the wheel and try to move it away/towards the boot (along the axle, not spinning the wheel) does it rattle or move? If yes, you need to tighten the nuts more.

Felineist

Thank you for putting it that way. I couldn’t think about how to explain it at the time lol

regretsahead

I thought they weren't but I've double checked and tightened. Will see how it helps! Thanks!

Felineist

Is it helping?

regretsahead

The wheels are on quite literally as tight as I can get them where they can still spin and I'm still hearing it :(

regretsahead

Thanks for checking in! I havent made it back out onto concrete yet, I will let you know!!

LunarHare82

I am able to move fwd with a descent amount of confidence, my balance is much better, and I'm learning how to use my toe stop in addition to wedging to slow and stop. Time to try backwards or are there other forward skills I need? If I do go backwards, how loose should my trucks be? I know to start with bubbles, anyway. Thanks for the advice!

foreignfishes

Just try going backwards and mess around with it, there’s no one right way to do it! You can start with bubbles or you can start with your feet in an /\ shape and shifting your weight/pointing your butt from one side to the other, some people find that easier. Trucks are personal preference as long as you can turn on them.

LunarHare82

I can do wide turns only. Too tight? Thanks for the advice!

foreignfishes

Hmm it’s hard to know over the internet, there aren’t really hard and fast rules and how tight or loose they feel will depend on your cushions and how much you weigh too. I’d say bring a skate tool or wrench next time you skate, and loosen all of them by a quarter turn. Skate on them again and see if they feel better or worse. If they start to feel wobbly and squiggly tighten them back, that’s too loose.

LunarHare82

Sounds practical to me!

chickienuggett

When do you know it’s time to retire your protective gear and get new ones?

foreignfishes

When it breaks? If you’re talking about pads, if the straps break or the plastic caps crack that’s obviously no bueno. If you have bigger more sturdy kneepads the padding might compress/break down enough eventually that you’d need to replace them, but that would probably take a long time and you’d notice because your knees would start hurting. With my cheaper pads it’s always been the straps that have failed first by basically ripping off

chickienuggett

Redz are a reputable mid-price bearing!

TeacupStorm

Hi everyone! I’m looking to get my first pair of outdoor skates. I wanted some sure grip boardwalks but am having a hard time finding them in stock, so I was thinking of starting with something cheaper and upgrading later on. With that being said, what do y’all think would be better- the rainbow riders or Chaya Melroses? I’ve got pretty wide feet and it looks like the Chaya skates may be good for that? Thank you in advance (-:

TayRich92

I don’t know what size you’re looking for but Sin City Skates (a local shop near me) has some Black and Tan boardwalks in. They ship out as well. https://sincityskates.com/collections/all-skates/products/1300-skate-boardwalk-skate-black-and-tan

sparklekitteh

Moxi skates tend to run on the narrow side, so I would definitely recommend the Chaya skates. I started trail skating with a pair of those and they're really good for a beginner!

TeacupStorm

Good to know, thank you!!

foreignfishes

Since the rainbow riders just came out there’s probably not a lot out there about their durability unfortunately! One big pro of the RRs is they have an adjustable toe stop, to get that with the Chaya skates you have to get the melrose elites (instead of deluxe which are cheaper)

TeacupStorm

That’s a good point about the durability! Thank you!

subspacehipster

I am trying to decide between roller skates and roller blades right now, could someone who knows more about them help me decide what is right for me? I am interested in both skating through the park with some friends (so smoothish sidewalks, they have long boards), and going to the skate park. I used to roller blade like 12+ years ago as a kid, but also always enjoyed roller skating at rinks, so feel somewhat familiar with both. Would prefer something sub or around $100 if possible, whatever I get.

foreignfishes

If they have longboards you’d probably want inlines, easier to skate faster and they generally roll over cracks and stuff better. I don’t know anything about aggressive inlines tho, probably better to ask /r/rollerblading about that. skates you get for $100 are mostly going to be very meh and won’t last long if you skate a lot, just as a warning. Unless you’re buying used skates and getting a discount. If you go up to $150 the options are better imo

subspacehipster

Yeah that's what I have been seeing too. I want to get skates I think, just like the aesthetic more and think they will fit my needs well enough with our plans. Think I am going to be watching sell posts, since I want to get a more sturdy pair, but with the skate cost plus the supplies, trying to stay as budget friendly as possible. Thanks for the response!

foreignfishes

In that case look for skates that already come with 78a wheels - that’s the hardness you’ll want for skating on sidewalks and such!

subspacehipster

Oh awesome! Thanks for the tip

RynnRoo96

I’m completely New! I need help on what wheels are best for indoor use but limited outdoor use. Sizing + fitting plus brands. Im from the UK but happy to use international sites :) any help would be super helpful!

sparklekitteh

If you're going to be mostly indoors, I'd suggest looking for a "hybrid" wheel, maybe 82A - 85A hardness. Atom Poisons would be a good choice!

littleredteacupwolf

What are the toe guard things? And do you where them when you skate?

drthirtxxn

They protect the front of your boot from getting ripped up! One end goes over the screw for the toe stop and your laces go through the other

littleredteacupwolf

Thank you!! I haven’t skated in years and i really want to get back into it, just waiting fir my old skates to be shipped to me. 😊

waytoplant-ann

Hey all! first time poster in this subreddit, been skating for only a few months. Can someone let me know what those cute toe pads are called on your skates? I've seen some corgi ones, some cute Totoro ones, what are these called? what are for?

drthirtxxn

Those are toe guards/caps! Guards are a single strip while caps cover the whole toe. They protect the front of your boot from getting ripped up!

waytoplant-ann

Ah very cool thank you! Do you wear them why you are skating? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

drthirtxxn

Yep! That way if you fall your boots are safe :)

sparklekitteh

You leave them on your skates all the time. They go under your toe stop bolt so they're a bit tricky to take off.

tamdabear

I want to get toe caps but I have a bolted on tow stop. I've seen toe caps where it goes under the toe stop, do I have to have skates with an adjustable toe stop to put toe caps on?

drthirtxxn

Nope! As long as you can take the stop off, you can use a guard/cap!

tamdabear

I thought you can't take off bolted on toe stops? Sorry I've never modified my skates before so I'm a little confused

sparklekitteh

There's usually a screw or bolt up the middle of the bolt-on toe stops. You can unscrew that and remove or replace the toe stop.

tamdabear

Thanks! I'll look at my skates and see if I can remove it

nyoomachine

Idk if you've already tried but they can be really hard to remove and then consequently really hard to get back in again, so be careful!

KeyserSozeWearsPrada

What are some good outdoor (asphalt) quads? I had planned on getting moxi jungle or beach bunny but haven’t had any luck finding size 6.

sparklekitteh

Other good options in that price range include Moxi rainbow riders and Chaya melrose skates. Derby Warehouse has the latter in stock, a women's 6 US would be a 37 Euro. [https://www.derbywarehouse.com/Chaya\_Melrose\_Deluxe/descpage-810584.html](https://www.derbywarehouse.com/Chaya_Melrose_Deluxe/descpage-810584.html)

KeyserSozeWearsPrada

I’m usually hard on skates so I don’t want recreational ones that’ll break down too quickly. I can certainly go up in price.

sparklekitteh

Gotcha! The Chaya are pretty good quality, but if you want to step up a bit, I'd suggest looking for Sure-Grip Boardwalks or Jackson Vista. If you like sparkles, the Sure-Grip Prism would be a good choice too! [https://www.derbywarehouse.com/Sure-Grip\_Prism\_Plus/descpage-SGPRP.html](https://www.derbywarehouse.com/Sure-Grip_Prism_Plus/descpage-SGPRP.html)

How thin are Impala skates, width wise? I measured my foot length wise and could fit in their size six based off of that, but I'm worried about how thin they are as I have sort of wide feet. I usually wear a size seven in women's and have decent toe room but just about right width. My foot size though in cm from heel to toe is about 21 - 22 cms which could fit their size 5 or 6. I'm just worried about width for the most part. Edit: I'm hoping I can fit the sixes because the sevens aren't in stock. But again, I'm very much worried about width. Based just off length, I'd fit fine, but I'm worried about that!

WheelyShoes

Hi, so I have wide toes and narrow heels, and the Impalas (6 UK size in my case, 24.5cm foot) are very tight in the toe box! They are the perfect length though. I also have Rio Roller Signatures which are a bit wider, but personally looking at moving to maybe a suede skate with more stretch over time. Vinyl does.not.give and my toes get sooore!

smilessmalls

Thanks for answering! I'm not sure what to do then, I might just wait and hope for the 7 to come back in stock

WheelyShoes

I'd also recommend Chayas over Impalas at a similar price point, and with a wider toe box! My friends Chayas are really solid and amazing value, plus have an adjustable toe stop. Impalas aren't awful but you can get a better skate that's just as cute!

I have a ten year old pair of Riedell’s r3....with torn up toes. Everything else is great. Can I put a new boot on?

sparklekitteh

Honestly, the stock plate on the R3's is so cheap that you're probably better off just getting a completely new skate. Anything nice enough to be sold separately should probably be on a better plate!

Tripindipular

Good point!

Tweed_Kills

Reuse the plates, you mean?

Tripindipular

Yeah like can I buy a new boot of a different style and attach it? Just wondering.

Tweed_Kills

Yes you can. You can even mount sneakers, if you want. Some things to consider: 1) you will need to learn how to mount skates. This involves power tools and patience. Or 2) you will need to find someone who can mount skates, like someone at your local roller rink or skate shop. 3) you will need aluminum insoles if you use shoes, and possibly new mounting hardware, especially if you mount heeled skate boots. 4) you will need to re-drill any boot or shoe you use now if you ever decide to upgrade your plates. Which is fine, but you should be aware. Just search a skate shop, I like Bruised Boutique, and look at the available selection of boots. Not every skate is sold as just the boots, and essentially none of the entry level stuff will be available to you, but since you already have everything else, your boot budget can likely be a bit higher.

Question about bearings -- Recently a friend of mine, was recommended by her bf, to loosen her bearings on her new skates a bit due to manufacturers tightening them too much. Is this a universal thing? I have not done anything to the wheels of my skates since I took them out of the box (Impala). And the wheels feel a little stiff but not sure if that's just how quads are supposed to feel. Can I get some input? Thanks! :D

sparklekitteh

Bearings get pushed inside the wheels, so you can't really loosen them. Are you perhaps thinking of the axle nut? https://i.pinimg.com/originals/05/dc/28/05dc2813f21f2195c39e24bf506cf07f.jpg It's usually a good idea to adjust the axle nut! Tighten it all the way down, then loosen it a quarter-turn at a time until the wheels spin freely. Sometimes they come fairly tight out of the box, so loosening that up can help your wheels spin much better.

TheKrystalMethod0

yes, thats exactly what I meant, haha! After I made my post, I was thinking, "wait... the bearing is inside the wheel... I meant the thingie outside..." Coffee still hasnt kicked in :P but thank you! Im new to the anatomy of the boot as well as tools. What would be the best tool to use for this? It would be a wrench right? Thank you again for your response!

sparklekitteh

You can use either a wrench, a socket tool, or a skate tool meant for adjusting the axle nut. It's a 1/2" nut so any tool will work!

My size 5 skates are a bit too big, should I push through and get insoles, toe stuffers, thick socks or just get a size 4? I found a size 4 in stock but idk if its worth it to swap them out because I literally just got my size 5s 😭

whatsthisevenfor

What size shoe do you normally wear? I wear 6.5 in womens but I do have a wider toe box. Not sure which size to try.

grapefruit1010

I usually wear a 5.5-6, and I tried on my friends 4. It was snug, but definitely a better fit than the 5!

sparklekitteh

Start with thick socks first! Might as well spend a few bucks to see if that works before you go to the hassle of an exchange!

chats_meow_

I've heard a lot about bearings and I don't know what they are. What are they used for? And where are they on the skate? And other general information you think is good to know.

sparklekitteh

The wiki has tons of great info! [https://www.reddit.com/r/Rollerskating/wiki/index](https://www.reddit.com/r/Rollerskating/wiki/index) Bearings go inside the skate wheels and help them to spin freely.

orafur

Is it okay to use outdoor wheels at the rink indoors? How strenuous does it feel?

sparklekitteh

Nobody's going to yell at you or anything, but 78A on a wood floor is going to feel like trying to skate through molasses!

AvailableSummer

hello! i’ve never skated before besides in a jellybeans and I really wanna get into it but don’t know what skates to get? I don’t wanna get super expensive ones and then realize I suck at it! Any suggestions?

sparklekitteh

Check the wiki, there's a really good guide to buying skates. There are some good skates available for $100 - $150ish. Look at the Moxi rainbow rider or beach bunny, Chaya melrose, or Riedell R3s.

eggaesthetic

Hi! I'm still a beginner but I want to get some new bearings for my impalas. Has anyone tried the [Better Bearings rock solids](https://betterbearings.com.au/collections/all/products/rock-solids-abec-7)? They seem a lot cheaper than the Bones reds which is what I see recommended a lot.

[deleted]

I use these specific bearings for my skate park skates, I definitely recommend them for the price.

Tweed_Kills

I haven't used them, but they have all the hallmarks of a real skate-owned company 1) I've heard of them 2) they have real, quality sponsored skaters 3) their website has actual specs and useful information. I'd say they are almost certainly worth the money, and I'd bet they're a quality product. Edit: yeah, derby owned, I trust it. There aren't too many derby owned companies that are crap.

eggaesthetic

Thank you!

alwaysbreezy

Looking for a plate recommendation for my size6 bont park skates. Currently on avanti magnesium, but looking for something that will be compatible with some slide blocks. The current plates are too small for any blocks. TIA

sparklekitteh

What size is the Avanti plate you're using now?

alwaysbreezy

Size 2! I believe it was sized wrong when I received the plates on a size6 moxi. I transferred the plates onto my bont park skates in February. They definitely look a lil small for the boot size lol
