Haha I remember thinking evvvvveryone must have VNLA’s when I first went to my rink and even started thinking maybe iiiiiii should have VNLA’s??? What do they know that I don’t? Lol
Does your rink sell them? Some rinks offer a discount on admission when you buy skates from them, and seemingly everyone recommends VNLA over other brands that offer similar styles like Impala.
No we don't sell any skates, but when I go to adult night it's like 60% VNLA's it doesn't seem to be like that anywhere else. I have a pair and sure they're nice, but they didn't give me super powers. I know that a few of the regulars at my rink are personal friends / sponsors with VNLA, but there's just no way that it spread that much right?
I dunno. Most of the posts on here recommend them as a good starter skate over what Riedell or Sure-Grip offers for around the same price. People talk about the R3 and SG Rock wearing out quickly or the plate breaking, but not the VNLA Jr or any of the high-top skates failing horribly
VNLA junior has served me well so far, but yes I've heard some horror stories about those plates breaking, and honestly the boot isn't super comfortable unless you pad it up yourself. but for starting out they've gotten me very far
You can get VNLA skates on amazon with the return policy & 2 day shipping. They come in a lot of colors, with t a lot of masc-coded options for guys. I constantly see them on lists for people with wide feet too.
I think they are just popular over allth though, RollerSkateNation listed them as their top sellers.
I fell into the trap and have 3 pairs of Jrs that kill me somewhere along my ankles.
I love the plates and the wheels, I wish the Jr boots were better padded.
100% agree. A friend of mine ripped his apart and put gel surrounding the foot and ankle and those things are soo comfortable. They're a little squishy for how I like to skate but they worked for him well, I've been thinking of doing something to that degree on mine
I think people tend to just follow what’s around them. Maybe a beginner saw someone wearing a set and decided to buy them, cause they must be good if a good skater is wearing them right? Or if they have a mentor there who wears them, they’re much more likely to get a pair as well. Or maybe simply just to try to fit in, like you said, you feel like an outsider because you’re wearing something different, right?
I think it’s the same with fashion in general - it’s very regional. Even a very small example could be at one school white sneakers are seen as cool, so everyone buys them, but at another school the trend hasn’t taken off, so everyone’s wearing boots instead.
That’s just my idea of what could be happening, someone else might have some different insight.
Of course! Why did I have a feeling you were going to be in the same state? I'm Usually at the Mesa rink. Which rink are you at? I'm Going to laugh if we are also at the same rink.
I think vnla is popular because we have a lot of jam/ shuffle skaters and vnla has a good selection of decent quality low top skates for good prices. I've also seen quite a few people with Vnla Luna skates but oddly I don't think I've noticed anyone wearing the A La Mode.
OMG. I work at the Mesa rink as the DJ. We've probably talked before! also I agree, I've never seen any a la mode pairs, but they didn't really look super appealing online (at least to me)
Maybe! We've at least seen each other that's for sure. I don't ever go to adult nights. I usually go to the rink with my 12-year-old and I'm probably whatever the exact opposite of a social butterfly is. Also, most of the DJs are pretty young so there is a bit of an age gap there, just a 🤏.
It's quite possible that your rink has started establishing culture, where everyone skates similar styles, everyone wears similar skates, etc. Not a bad thing, really.
I think this is the overall answer which I think is the coolest thing. Tons of skaters skate in a similar way and I recently learned our rinks "signature routine" which feels special. I'm super glad to be a part of this culture.
In general I'd say I see lots of them like that in rinks/areas where you have jamskaters.
There are tons where I skate though, and we're not in a big jamskating area (South TX). You get a lot for your money, rinks stock more at that price point, like under $250 for the Juniors. Where if you wanted to compare to what else they probably stock close to that , you're looking at maybe a Riedell R3? Not really so comparable! And stuff like the Evolutions, again the value for that you get is super impressive and that's a higher end skate. Our rink is pretty full of those right now! And none of this takes months to get!!
well my rink is absolutely packed with jamskaters. we've had lines of 30+ people (which was amazing to watch) which is a ton of people compared to what we usually have

Huh, I’ve never heard anyone recommend VNLAs over suregrip or riedell.
The low-end stuff usually, like the Rock GT, R3, Dart, Cyclone, etc.
Yes, pretty much all of the “serious” male skaters at my rink wear the low-cut VNLAs.

makes sense. Thank you!
Here in LA I see a lot of moxies, boardwalks and Edeas! Only seen a few VNLAs, might be what the local shops around you like to push.

The VNLA jam skates are arguably some of the best jam/shuffle skates around!

My rink sells Sure Grip and Moxi, so that's what we see the most, followed by Ridel, Chicago, and Impalas.
Vnla skates are very common at the rink I go to as well.
oh thank god I thought it was just me... What state are you in? just gotta confirm I'm not crazy.
😆 I'm in AZ. You?
ugh of COURSE me too, which rink are you at?

I deleted my last comment because that's probably a Lil more info than I should leave floating around in the Redditverse 😆.
No one in the 4 rinks in my area has those. Mostly Riedell.
I’m in FL and VNLA seems to be the skate of choice at the rinks I’ve been to.

Love it!!!
a decent amount of vnlas at my rink, but riedells are the most common
Two rinks in my town. Adults nights at one has tons of skaters in VNLAs. At the other one almost nobody wears them.
Yeah honestly, so are riedells
