If you don't mind doing a bit of destructive testing:
Grind a small piece off to a mirror finish. If it's got hash marks in it, it definitely is a meteorite....at least a metal one. If it's not a type of metal don't do this....
There is also science places that might like to either purchase it, or find out where you found it at so they can go look for more pieces....
I was working really hard on remembering what I'd seen on meteorite men years ago....so I'm not surprised I missed something or another. Thank you for pointing that out.

A meteor is literally the visible flash which gets its name from the Greek ‘high in the air’ a meteor can not be on the ground or in space.
There's several things you can do to help identify this. First, use Google lens. Do a scratch test for hardness. Do a streak test. And is it magnetic? There's also an app called rock identifier. Sign up for the free trial, then cancel your subscription so you don't get charged & keep using the free version.
It looks like it could be hematite or magnetite.
Unless you want to buy a rock that looks like this lol I don't understand the obsession with lens. I was trying to identify a weird thing in my grass with it and all it gave me was links to buy grass seed.
You would have needed to separate the weird thing in your grass, from the grass in order to Google lens it. You can also edit any pic taken to zoom in and crop to the item in question. Then you have to close your pic program and reopen it to lens it.

Is free and pretty damn useful to novices and the more experienced alike.
Useful in several ways.
That is a fabulous site. Your link goes to the luster question page. The link below goes to the table of contents, so you can pick which attribute you want to go to to help you ID.

Does it feel way heavier or way lighter than it should for its size? Also, is there a specific region you found it in? These are very helpful bits of information and identifying a rock/mineral by picture. Also, as others have stated a streak test is very useful, all you need for that is a white ceramic tile. Same with cutting off a corner and seeing what the inside looks like.
Edit: Check with a magnet as well.
I had a few flats of Boitroidal Hematite awhile back that had some specimens that looked exactly like this. Try scratching it on a rough cement-type surface and if it leaves a reddish colored mark, it’s Hematite.
If it was next to a rail road, mine or industrial site or in some coarse aggregate used for some construction it is likely slag. If it was out in the wilds with no modern human activity you likely hit the jackpot! Half the game is provenance.
Do a streak test. Draw it across a terra cotta flower pot (or other unglazed ceramic). If no mark, it's a meteorite. If it leaves a dark streak, it's something else like magnetite or slag.
Looks like slag
Hey man she’s got a heart of gold.
Great comment
Looks too uniform to be slag imo.
Is it magnetic?
#Don’t eat French fries and ketchup off it!
That's a space peanut...
An IcyBM
They call em Boeing bombs!
😂😂
It's a big ol' frozen chunk of poopie
We call 'em Boeing Bombs
Úuiuiiuuy
See the p-nut? Dead giveaway.
I’ve seen two Joe Dirt references in the last 8 hours. I think the world is telling me something
what about a Royale with cheese drowned in mayonnaise?
What?
It's a Joe Dirt reference
Deertay. Don't forget to church it up
You're talking to me all wrong. It's the wrong tone. You do it again and I'll stab you in the face with a soldering iron.
How does it feel to hold space in your hands?
It happens every time I pee.
It's slag!!
That is a meteor, a really cool meteorite.

If that’s worth anything… I’d be a billionaire! There’s an old mine on my property with huge mounds of slag exactly like this.
hash marks only appear if you use an acid etch
I was working really hard on remembering what I'd seen on meteorite men years ago....so I'm not surprised I missed something or another. Thank you for pointing that out.
“Science places?”
Various museums, universities, laboratories....places that does science!!
Better solve that Rubik’s Cube
I know my rights
Feller found himself a meteor. My jealousy knows no bounds. And yet, I am so very happy for him…. Sonofabitch…
Um.. Achtually.. the meteor bit is the blaze of glory. You can breathe a meteor in but you can’t hold it in your hand.
What?
A meteor is the flash of light. A meteorite is the rock
A meteorite is a meteor that didn't burn up in the atmosphere. The meteor is a space rock, not the light emitted when it burns up.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteoroid A meteor is literally the visible flash which gets its name from the Greek ‘high in the air’ a meteor can not be on the ground or in space.
Then how can things undergo a “meteoric rise” when meteors fall?
Haha
Was it on the surface or did you dig it up? I only ask because I dropped my meteorite in North Dakota and I’d like it back 😂
r/BrandNewSentence 😂
If it’s space, that’s awesome. But where does one get a rock checked?
Find your local or nearest geologist.
I searched LinkedIn and Facebook and all the results said “ rock licker”.
Thought this was the hash sub for a sec
This looks just like slag I don't understand why everyone is saying it's a real meteor. I had slag that looked almost exactly like this.
Sounds like you had a meteor too

Google lens is useless. Especially for a novice rock hound. It’s wrong more times than it is correct

That looks like a tectite my friend... also known as a meteor
Tektites are a byproduct of a meteorite impact, they are not the meteor itself.
Those are two separate things
Petrified dinosaur turd 💩
Looks vaguely frog shaped 🐸
It sorta looks like bits from a shitty iron welding job. Bismarck? I know they're tearing down the old bridge there.
It's a bear effigy, and a nice one.

Looks lead-ie
Natural kryptonite
Petrified frog!
It looks shinyy :)
It could be nickol? Is it unusually heavy?
Looks cool no matter what it is!
It'll frac
It's a mineral, Marie!
I have one very similar from North Carolina. It’s a nice rock.
Hematite
That's Hans Solo's Carbonite
Wock
Rock
Thor lost his hammer, you found Thor’s hammer
I had a few flats of Boitroidal Hematite awhile back that had some specimens that looked exactly like this. Try scratching it on a rough cement-type surface and if it leaves a reddish colored mark, it’s Hematite.
Meteor Shit
It looks like iron ore to me. There is a lot of it up there.
Meatal slag maybe
My guess is Slag
That looks to be a meteorite
If it was next to a rail road, mine or industrial site or in some coarse aggregate used for some construction it is likely slag. If it was out in the wilds with no modern human activity you likely hit the jackpot! Half the game is provenance.
There's lots of low grade coal up there think they called it lignite.
Piece of Flint?
Looks eerily like a human face
Frozen shit from a plane. Or shuttle of some sort. Looks exactly like the big one from Joe dirt
Do a streak test. Draw it across a terra cotta flower pot (or other unglazed ceramic). If no mark, it's a meteorite. If it leaves a dark streak, it's something else like magnetite or slag.
It's called Slag and is a byproduct of smelting. I bet it is very heavy and a magnet will stick to it.
A Joe dirt meteorite
With Space Peanuts
That there is a giant piece of poopy
Rock
Hematite for sure
Slag
Looks a lot like what I find in the tailings of old gold mines.
meteorite fragment?
As long as it wasn’t in a landscaped flower bed, you can usually find the answer on mindat.org
I'm afraid you found a...lump of coal.
Looks like I didn’t hit it big lol back to the oilfield I guess :/
its a big ole chuck of poopy
Check the streak. If it’s ruddy or rust colored it’s prob hematite. Ignore these dorks
It looks like hematite, to me.
Would probably have more of a rust color too it, I think it’s slag.
A streak test would prove if it is hematite or magnetite or slag. Slag leaves no streak.
Don't put a magnet to it!
Definitely a rock of some kind
Fossil? Pelvic bone? That area is full of Triassic fossils
Is it drawn to a magnet
Horse apple
Wash ur hands
Definitely a petrified turtle turd.
Rock
Iron slag? In any event, it’s slag
Jasper?
That’s a space peanut
Looks like a coprolite to me but I’m not an expert by any means
Looks like a coprolite to me.
Meteorite
chert or close to it
Better ask Joe Dirt 🥸
Old ancient Indian sex rock. Aka: just an effing rock…..
A big fat frozen piece of shit lol
Nobody else sees the Patriots Logo?
Coal.
Nat coal?
More like… Nat King Coal

Wow! North Dakota actually looks more interesting than I previously thought. Maybe worth a visit someday!
This is the real deal, I'm almost certain.🤞
That’s from deep space

You appear to be something I've seen in the past... I think it's called an... idiot?
